  • The Immutable Laws of Excellence and Longevity
In this episode of the Align podcast, Laird Hamilton talks to us about surfing, and the ways we should embrace chaos on a daily basis. We dive deep into his childhood in Hawaii and his affinity for surfing at a young age. We also explore his secrets for longevity, and how he maintains health and fitness at fifty-nine years old. We cover some of the habits everyone should build in order to live a more emotionally, spiritually, and physically balanced lifestyle.
Laird Hamilton is known as the guiding genius of crossover board sports and is largely considered the primary influence behind many surfing innovations, including tow-in surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, and hydrofoil boarding.
Surfer Magazine has labelled Laird as, “the sport’s most complete surfer, displaying almost unnerving expertise in a multitude of disciplines, and flat out surfing’s biggest, boldest, bravest, and the best big wave surfer in the world today, bar none.”

Good discussion. The 'people seeing hoses as snakes' analysis does not apply universally. Many people have suffered traumatic events and without sufficient healing, they will interpret non-threatening events as potential danger (think of women who were raped/molested; children who were physically and emotionally abused; some military veterans; people who have fled oppressive governments and environments such as the Khmer Rouge, etc...). Some outdoor programs, such as outward bound, have been helpful for helping these people regain their trust. Their trauma colors how they view the world.

If you got a gnarly rip, you can catch a wave out to sea. It still threw me off a bit seeing a wave coming from behind, from the shore, but it got me out deep quick.. South Coast of Australia at a notoriously choppy beach called Gunnamatta.
I think it's nature's unpredictability that I find attractive. Obviously humans are not apart from nature at a deeper level but we are prone to biases. I started living out in the bush last year and came out here with a hostility towards snakes, there's plenty of deadly ones around here. With exposure that attitude quickly changed. Last year at the farm I work at, in one of the paddocks, I crouched down and was just a couple of feet away from a tiger snake (highly venomous), they like to live in between the blueberry plants due to there being some protection from birds and also there's mice around for them to snack on.
