I am 49. 9 years after I moved to US, 5 years after a serious health issue which I need to manage for life time, 8 months after I entered into a new job, and maybe not far away from a devoice. I need to be able to financially support my kid, my mom, and myself. So I am learning a lot of things including learning English. I LUUUVE this interview! I’m 47 and I’ve been trying to evolve, heal, learn and find my path. It’s quit daunting if you don’t have others to learn from. I appreciate both of you for doing what you do.
I discovered Rich when he first started podcasting and it was so good I couldn’t realize why he wasn’t up there with Tim & Joe Rogan but now he is on his way and glad to see it. Rich has been through a lot & made it out so it also has credibility with me when he’s open about his lows and humble about the highs
Trying to think of a word to describe how happy it makes me to see two of my favourite podcasters/thinkers/conversation geniuses meeting to chat. I hope this is only the beginning of the exchange between you and Rich, Tim -- as we have so much to learn from both of you. I loved Rich's answer to your billboard question and I am currently using it as a writing prompt. Many thanks to you both for continuing to do what you do, but also for being aware enough to take time off-grid/away from your routines to rest, play, think, and reevaluate. I hope I can do this more myself and I am working on ways to set boundaries to create more free space in my mind to take stock and be more intentional. Much love to both of you.
Rich Roll is a legend! I've been a listener of Rich's podcast for several years, and thank you ,Tim Ferris, for the opportunity to hear Rich and his story and gratitude to Rich for his honesty and vulnerability. Great podcast!
Great stuff guys. So many common points with me. The light bulbs kept going on. At 48 after being a 'good' boozer since 15 I faced my demons and stopped. Have been free for 14 months. Life is just so much better. Now onto my sugar addiction 😁. Keep up the good work. I wish I did this when I was 30 but it's never too late.
@@joeylozado4190 thank you for the book recommendation. Do you feel the book is a fairly comprehensible to someone with a non-medical/technical background?
I’ve listened to many podcasts but this is one of my faves. I’ve heard of Rich over the years. Mainly due to his marathons and promotion of the vegan diet but this podcast has given me a huge appreciation for his story and journey. Awesome stuff.
I really love that his story shows that healing is not this singular event/aha moment and "everything is fine". It's a journey. A long, LONG journey. I wish the common narrative around healing would reflect this reality more often...
Everything in life that provides postive outcomes takes time for us to see the results. (Exercise, strength, inner physical health, emotional strength, long term wealth, strong relationships, family bonds, etc.) Everything in life that provides instant results is usually bad for us. (Fast food, treats, social media, tv, alcohol, drugs, cheating on spouse, etc) We need to learn and teach this simple law of incremental compounded gains over long periods of time. Instant gratification serves a purpose to appease an immediate need of some sort, but it will not pay off over time. Delayed gratification and compounded interest resulted from incremental gains is indeed a topic to explore...and teach our young people.
This was such a great conversation Tim! I have great respect for you and Rich. I loved listening to Rich’s story again. My dad died at 51 from alcoholism/liver failure. My two best friends are alcoholics…one sober 8 years, the other will likely not make it 6 months. I’m 67 and stopped drinking at 30. Thank you for asking Rich the question about how to get back into fitness…so helpful for me to think about what I want/need/desire to get me back into a focused workout. I’ve been considering a personal trainer. I prefer to sleep outdoors in all weather. My husband is not at all on board with us sleeping apart even one night. I’ve encountered 2 mountain lions and many bobcats but never bothered. I’ll have to try the Mindfold. I started taping my mouth a month ago…game changer for me to stop breathing through my mouth. This podcast was jam-packed…I’ll need to listen again. Thank you!❤
I'm 30 and going through an alcoholic rut. I can feel myself spiraling. I'm writting my finals as a Real Estate developer which is keeping me focused and afloat but I can feel I'm borderline between 2 roads. So I hope I break free from this.
Minus the expensive LA house, writing a book, a Stanford Law education, a successful podcast and being able to take off a month/year I can relate to Rich.
Very interesting (and helpful) interview. Favorite part: around 1:53 Rich explaining letting go of the need to suffer (relatable). Three words: grace and JOY and allowing. Totally worth listening nearly 2 hours to hear that. ❤🙏
Love it!! 38 and shitting myself despite doing ok, this has given me the boost in positiveness I knew was out there but hadn't heard for a long while, big props to RR & TF who I only just discovered!!!
Thank you both so much. I've been hoping for this conversation to happen for months now. Rich, your work honestly got me through COVID, and Tim, I've been so inspired by you and your podcast for years. Absolutely loved this conversation. "Who are you becoming?"
What is seriously calming to me, is to hear these accomplished guys talk about still being in gray areas regarding decisions to be made. I feel like I live there most days. Lol I’m not alone…and I’m not broken. 🤷♀️
I'm a recent follower of Tim's podcast and this is such a great episode. Rich Roll is the most humble human being ever. He has overcome his weaknesses and become an Ultra champion. Truly inspirational! Looking forward to more episodes.
glad i wasn’t the only one who got emotional during this part. I don’t tear up easily but for some reason this really hit me hard. It makes me really want to be a positive influence in people’s lives.
"Who are you becoming?" Such a simple but impactful question to consider our individual trajectories and the consider microactions we're taking each day.
One thing to note about why Rich looks great is he's using a hair light from behind him, in addition to the main light (can be centered or offset).... This creates that separation from the background on his shoulders as well... Love this man, thank you for sharing!
In reality, life demands constant reinvention of ourselves; some will dance those steps more often than others. Lucky are those who have developed into their best version of themselves. I'm ready now for a remake; this is an encouraging and helpful conversation. Thank you!
'Who are you becoming?' ..... That is absolute GOLD!!! If humanity would reflect on that question daily I believe we would live in a very different world.
Can I just say a straight up thankyou for guys like Rich, just sharing the journey and trying to give practical ways to get through addiction makes people like me feel alot less alone in this. Thank you.
Started listening to both of these podcasts several years back RR was a real inspiration for my transition to vegan 4 years ago. I find so much of it and the other guests SO inspiring. Taking ownership and changing from within. SO many people get stuck and blame external factors.
I am a newer fan of you both. I was not at all expecting this introduction, nor was I aware of Rich's past with alcohol. This was so powerful. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
I love Tim. And just came across rich 2 nights ago but I just wanted to say these 2 I could listen to together for like 12 hrs straight. If not longer. ❤️ just love the realness and the inspiration.
This was such a fantastic episode. Listened while at the gym, trying to get back into a routine, and I became so enthralled with the material that I found myself performing well without thinking hard about it. Appreciate the work you two do
I have been reading the book, "The Plant-Based Athlete" and it mentions Rich Roll. I'm 41 years old and have questioned if it's too late for me to get back into athletic condition at my age. Reading about Rich gave me hope that it is absolutely not too late!! Love hearing his story, and it inspires me to be consistent in all aspects of my life. It only took me this long to shift from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset, but I'd rather do that in my forties than on my deathbed!
I wasted a lot of my early life partying too much. I started mountain biking around 50 and also did a few 50 mile endurance races. I was in better shape at 50 than any time in my life. I’m 61 now and thinking of my next race. I WISH I was 40 or so. You don’t realize how young you are.
Ive had a lifelong battle with substance addiction, from pot to pills to heroin, clean for few years, then to booze took over until a few months ago. Here are some of the ways I view addiction. It's an inability to reconcile past traumas. Unable to live in the present without substance. Often thinking 1 thing away from contentment. I will be ok when this 1 thing happens. Ultimately it's trying to fill a God sized hole. I've used to escape pain, trauma, PTSD etc.
I can 100% relate to your comment as the "1 thing away from contentment" was something that I have struggled with and did go through a lengthy period of substance addiction because of that. That "God sized hole" is the theme of Rich Roll's podcast episode with Lisa Miller. You might find it interesting.
This podcast really deepens my desire to work for myself and not another authority. The fact that covid wasn't brought up as a block at all seems like their work and lifestyle bypasses all the bullshit all the "regular" people have to deal with. I don't know this man and anything else he puts out but it seems as if he's figured out his position to be pretty independent of what else may be going on outside of his family. Covid has really ruined the potential for a lot of people and it's nice to have a break from people talking about it. It seems like a major stopping point for my life. Potential employment and even the ability to go to a gym isn't available for me under this tyrannical gov obsession in Canada. Cheers for a great discussion!
Such a great conversation, I really needed to hear this during this time in my life. Hits deep & I feel so many similarities to Rich. Good conversations make the soul feel so much lighter. 💖
Rich pauses midway through and speaks for many of us Tim as he outlines the powerful force for good you are in this world. In terms of what is next for you, I have a hunch of what your next book will be, if you write it of course. And, honestly, with huge tailwinds that around that topic, your positioning is likely to be the tipping point to accelerate change to the masses. No pressure lol
1:00:20 It was great to see Rich get very emotional about this. I mean, we all have influence and inspiration. I can also say The Four Hour Workweek totally changed my paradigm as well. Tim is a mastermind and Rich is the best podcaster on the planet.
I'm a big fan of both of you and this was an amazing conversation. I feel like I need to listen to this again at least once a week/month. I can't thank you enough.
I'm 40 now and battling with chronic pain and impossibility to put a name on it. This has forced me to review my identity in search of a psychological source. This conversation helps a lot to put a framework around what I am doing. Incredible 2 very vulnerable guys. Thanks to you both
I've had both success and loss, love comfort and trauma- loneliness...it's interesting the pattern of up and down.Thank you for sharing vulnerable, honest and human stories...so meaningful.
Great interview, I thought these guys were both superheroes, but actually they have all the same challenges I do with training and motivation, appreciate their openness
this podcast reminded me of something i read the other day. "something sad but also kind of sweet i've noticed about human mirroring trait (i.e. seeing someone regularly preform a physical or verbal action and adapting it as your own) is that even after a person has stopeed being in my life they've still left pieces of themself within me. I still smile and wave like my childhood best friend did. I still pull my shirts up to cover my face when i'm embarrassed because my favorite college roommate did that. I've learned how to be a human being through all those around me, and those after me will likely learn the same way too." -mr spider
What u talk of at around 1 hr 55 mins, that is awesome! We're evolving big time. The fundamentals of our subconscious, and spiritual ways of finding progress in general is changing from having to suffer to finally letting go of what used to be a need, which is this hardship that all who found, quote on quote, success, include a substantial amount of focus on in their bio. What people may miss is that, everyone suffered, success, or not! Anyway, great podcast!! Was a joy to listen to. Thanks-
Zone 2 training has been explained very eloquently by Mark Allen, Ironman winner many times and many years ago! He wrote a book with Dr. Maffetone called The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing and they explain why Zone 2 helps increase lung capacity and build your aerobic base so that you can start doing interval training at a higher level. You end up seeing your speed and strength increase with a lower amount of effort. Lance Armstrong did the same thing with cycling, using a higher cadence and watching his watts and over time, his watts would go up while his effort stayed the same. Love Rich Roll and his story is so inspiring! Thank you.
Great interview from an introverted intuitive who speaks my language. I find it hard to motivate myself to exercise because I'm getting older, had a non healing base of fifth avulsion for years, then a lengthy post viral lung problem and see myself as doomed to deteriorate regardless, but there's no excuse not to do some meditation and yoga which might actually steer me to being more productive as opposed to languishing and dreading the future which is currently very limited and controlled by others. Being limited is an opportunity to focus though.
I've been devouring both your respective content for years. Tim, your podcast with Derick Sivers is my absolute fave, 5 bullet Friday has come weekly for over a year, Tribe of Mentors is approx 8 feet from where i'm sitting, and Rich, what can I say...I have an autographed copy of Finding Ultra, am vegan and sober for 6 years this month, have you and Adam to thank for introducing me to Goggins (on my 4th read of the book now) and even have the same license plate....PLNTBSD on my truck. lol. I'm looking forward to what this new offering from this dynamic duo has for us all.
The one thing I'd add to this in-depth discussion about reinventing one's life is: sometimes you have to leave certain people behind. Some will unconciously put sticks in your wheels, out of envy o self-hate (kinda the same thing). Others are straight up malignant and NEED you weak, so your getting stronger will trigger them every step of the way.
Lack of parenting is becoming the biggest problem in society. That introversion that keeps you boxed in comes from the parents, or lack thereof. I have been down the same road myself although I went into the Marines. Bad parenting causes so many lives to be ruined from the start. That's the real pandemic.
Indeed, it is just that, lack of parenting. A way bigger problem than covid or any other thing. But no one will talk about that. We are a sick society.
I went to bed last night thinking about synchronicity in life, or the lack of it lately, then I woke with this completely by chance, and it’s a list of boxes getting ticked in my current position, training for an ultra, sleeping in a tent, trying to organise my work week etc
I have so much admiration for this Rich. I don't even subscribe to his podcast nor am I a vegan (totally opposite) nutritional view. However, as humans, we merge at the same existential issues, our weaknesses, and our strengths. I listen to many podcasts, from Andrew Huberman, Tom Bilyeu, Joe Rogan, Carnivore, and low carb community, Lewis Howes, Lex Fridman, Petersons...you name it, I've listened. But nothing has touched as a human vulnerability of Rich's here, in genuine Tim's raw questionnaire and another, Rich's interview with Dr. Anna Lembke. 🖤
Do you eat more of a carnivore diet? I tried the vegan diet a few years ago and it negatively impacted my health too much. I feel great on the carnivore/ keto diet though
I didn’t know this about Rich Roll! This is such a cool interview because it really explains the difficulty of having to reinvent oneself. This is not something that everyone can or has had to do. Great skill to learn!
yo this rich roll guy is a great speaker and breaking down his journey and knowledge is wonderful and gives insight on some many different levels thank you very much!
Man I got into the technology field at 23... worked for IBM and Microsoft and then for a marketing agency for 20 years.. when I lost my job at marketing co due to the owner retiring... I found that after 50 nobody wants to hire me... darn.. so then I lost everything as I couldn't find work.. ended up homeless.. then I found out about wholesaling real estate... got into that and it changed my life.. I thought you had to have a lot of money and credit.. but I was able to get started with absolutely nothing and no place to live.. now I own several houses and this has been a big change from just 4 years ago when I thought life was over for me and I was even suicidal thinking I couldn't provide for my family anymore... so there are ways to make it happen even if you are down in the dumps...

Thank you both for making this available to people! I've found it very helpful, and inspired to share this with others, and use some of the said tips and tools in my daily life! I have so much I want to share, and this has taught me to be a little more unafraid and focus on where I want to go, and what's most important to me. Thank you 💛 Overcoming addictions, pressing forward, being compelled to be better.. knowing what struggles feel like to how it feels to find peace.. and be something more.. living life grateful thankful and taking nothing for granted. I love this.. I'll definitely watch, listen, and study these two hours again.

I LUUUVE this interview! I’m 47 and I’ve been trying to evolve, heal, learn and find my path. It’s quit daunting if you don’t have others to learn from. I appreciate both of you for doing what you do.
Same here. Wish you the best.
Same here
How are you doing?
Rich interviewed Tim on his podcast few years back, check it out! It's another great conversation.

Rich Roll is a legend! I've been a listener of Rich's podcast for several years, and thank you ,Tim Ferris, for the opportunity to hear Rich and his story and gratitude to Rich for his honesty and vulnerability. Great podcast!
Literally on a run last week and thought “I’m shocked there isn’t a podcast of either of these guys interviewing each other”. Can’t wait to listen.
Rich has a podcast interviewing Tim from a few years ago. Highly recommend
The sugar addiction is in line with the alcohol addiction. Read: Biochemical individuality. 👍🏻
@@joeylozado4190 thanks Joey's I'll take a look. So much to learn.
Congratulations that is a great achievement. Just finished my first 6 months sugar free. Keep on moving forward.
@@joeylozado4190 that makes a lot of sense. I drink a fair amount and also struggle with sugar addiction.
Big fan of Rich and his "doing > talking" messages. You know someone has spent serious time looking in the mirror to be able to speak the way he does.
Coming up on 6 years sober. My life continues to grow. Love to hear these stories when it gets hard. Who knows where I will be in a few more years 🙏🤙
I literally don’t know any wiser person than Rich Roll. Thank you both so much for this conversation ❤️
Minus the expensive LA house, writing a book, a Stanford Law education, a successful podcast and being able to take off a month/year I can relate to Rich.
Ha ha, truth!
How about when he was deeply in debt, having cars repossessed, didn't know where his family was gong to live? That help? 🙄
@@jobrown1405 You obviously didn’t get the joke.
😂
Great interview Tim! Rich's book Finding Ultra changed my life. It's cool to see my 2 favorite podcasters having a great discussion.
Finding Ultra is one of the best biographies I have read in years. Absolutely amazing story.
So glad you have Rich on the show. Found his work when I got sober and it's immensely helped me to drive towards change. Mood follows action for sure.
Very interesting (and helpful) interview. Favorite part: around 1:53 Rich explaining letting go of the need to suffer (relatable). Three words: grace and JOY and allowing. Totally worth listening nearly 2 hours to hear that. ❤🙏
Well yes, but I don't necessarily agree as life is suffering and you have to involuntarily suffer to prepare for this thing called life.
Love it!! 38 and shitting myself despite doing ok, this has given me the boost in positiveness I knew was out there but hadn't heard for a long while, big props to RR & TF who I only just discovered!!!
Tim, you improve my quality of life intellectually, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Thank you. I love you.
So true! He’s so incredibly intelligent and accomplished, but he is so present and humble at the same time.
Wqaaaa
Been following these two for years. Such incredible synergy to hear them together... 1:00:00 nearly brought me to tears. Two very special spirits.
glad i wasn’t the only one who got emotional during this part. I don’t tear up easily but for some reason this really hit me hard. It makes me really want to be a positive influence in people’s lives.
"Who are you becoming?" Such a simple but impactful question to consider our individual trajectories and the consider microactions we're taking each day.
Tim Ferris … the best question asker 👍🏻 this is what I like about your podcasts.
Thank you.
At 60 I’m learning how to live as an entrepreneur Reinvention is real!
Started listening to both of these podcasts several years back RR was a real inspiration for my transition to vegan 4 years ago. I find so much of it and the other guests SO inspiring. Taking ownership and changing from within. SO many people get stuck and blame external factors.
Rich is so humble and eloquent and collected.
No better way to start the new year than to have two of my favorite podcasters on one episode!
I am a newer fan of you both. I was not at all expecting this introduction, nor was I aware of Rich's past with alcohol. This was so powerful. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
This is SOLID GOLD. These men are heros of mine and the talk was 💯
This conversation between you, Tim and Rich, filled me with joy and tears. No less.
Started running when the pandemic started in 2020, first ultra 50k in a the summer of 2021 and first 100k next summer, I also found something past 30
Rich is ever graceful and articulate; many people suffer but lack the words to express it. Grateful he stepped forward after he stepped upward.
My 2 favorite gurus! So much life-guidence from these two... can't get enough.
From 1:02 on, this is exactly where I find myself turning 44 this year. So glad I stumbled across this to hear someone elses view on this.
Rich roll played a big part in my life for four years guava years ago. I listen to almost all his podcasts from the very beginning.
For some people the first half of the interview is extremely relevant and needed. Thanks!
I’m 43 and basically starting my life over, thank you for this I swear I’ve wanted to die some days but this has given me so much hope
Such a great conversation, I really needed to hear this during this time in my life. Hits deep & I feel so many similarities to Rich. Good conversations make the soul feel so much lighter. 💖
Rich Roll is a badass! He always interviews the most incredible people on his podcasts.
Thank you for this episode. "Mood follows action" explains a lot! And it works indeed
I love and admire both you gentlemen.Thank you for being strong, inteligent gentle men in this world. You give a woman hope , thank you. :)
Who are you becoming? That question alone was worth the listen. Lots of gems in their talks. 💎
So refreshing to hear someone who doesn’t use the word “right” at the end of every sentence.
Rich Roll has a generous spirit and a kindness that is uncommon in this world. Loved watching this!!!
Thanks to you both
look at German new medicine
I've learned how to be a human being through all those around me, and those after me will likely learn the same way too."

I have a lot of respect for Rich Roll.
Rich is soooo wise and so helpful to listen to. Excelent interview. Made me think and cry at the same time. 💖
My 2 Favourite Podcasters !!!
Nerd. Ha ha
These two gents are excellent role models for blokes. Enormous respect for them both.
Word.
Indeed, it is just that, lack of parenting. A way bigger problem than covid or any other thing. But no one will talk about that. We are a sick society.
Amen
And sugar and bad food on top off that
Well said!
I went to bed last night thinking about synchronicity in life, or the lack of it lately, then I woke with this completely by chance, and it’s a list of boxes getting ticked in my current position, training for an ultra, sleeping in a tent, trying to organise my work week etc
Tim, thank you for sharing this because it's one of the best interviews I've ever seen by you!
Both of You INSPIRED ME to become a PODCASTER ! Thank you !!!
yo this rich roll guy is a great speaker and breaking down his journey and knowledge is wonderful and gives insight on some many different levels thank you very much!
Dr. Bob and the old timers” is a great read as far as informative on the beginnings of AA and a glimpse into the very lives of Dr. Bob and Bill Wilson. 6 yrs in recovery from alcoholic followed by heroine. Barely got out alive. Thank God and Alcoholics Anonymous, which was and is blessed by Him....my belief and experience
Thank you both for making this available to people! I've found it very helpful, and inspired to share this with others, and use some of the said tips and tools in my daily life! I have so much I want to share, and this has taught me to be a little more unafraid and focus on where I want to go, and what's most important to me. Thank you 💛
Overcoming addictions, pressing forward, being compelled to be better.. knowing what struggles feel like to how it feels to find peace.. and be something more.. living life grateful thankful and taking nothing for granted. I love this.. I'll definitely watch, listen, and study these two hours again.
what if it were easy? with grace, delight and joy- a beautiful stance of inquiry!
One of the most hearty conversations in a minute. Loved every second 🙏 thank you Tim thank you Rich
Just found this and it was a fantastic listen.. thanks a lot.
Thank God for a layman’s explanation on zone 2 training!
what a powerful conversation. what an amazing story. rich has so much knowledge and wisdom from his life experiences. we're blessed to be bestowed this knowledge and perspective he's gained. thank you Tim for a great interview. thanks rich for the wisdom and honesty. it's humbling.
Ultimate cross over! My two fave podcast hosts in one spot!
