Sadly Terry did the drumming for the whole Brothers In Arms album but Mark decided it didn't work with what he wanted so the only part he kept was the intro to Money for Nothing. The rest of the album was re recorded with a different drummer.
Is that true? Prince notoriously had a massive ego (and deservedly so). Please let this be true. I'd have countered with Dave Gilmour, but that is personal preference stuff. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarist of all time. This song is like he is doing a duet with his guitar. First Mark sings, then his guitar sings.... He likes to "make his guitar cry and sing"!
there are musicians and MUSICIANS. This is art, that comes with hard effort. Its not only talent, its a hard effort to learn to play guitar that way. Mark Knopfler said when he was young, he would fall asleep while playing guitar in the night. So without sweat and tears you cant make to this type of quality. Of course, his song writing skills are epic.
Just the look in your eyes, and your smiles,I can see you enjoy it! I remember back when I was 2years old, heard brothers in arms for the first time. I have been stuck ever since, and that was in 87.
Nice to see a positive reaction to this track, the whole album is class. In all honesty they never made a bad album, I was fortunate enough to see them twice. Their first album is well worth a listen.
The whole band are top class musicians. They are my favourite rock band, loved your reaction, they made lots of great music. They just had a feel for the music. The drummer was really on form, I have been listening to them for years, for me the best.
I've seen Dire Straits a few time's in Concert and I have all their albums. First time I saw them live in concert I was only 15years old we danced the whole concert. One of our greatest British bands Mark, Singer and lead guitarist was a University lecturer when he formed his band. Mark is the reason I learnt to play the guitar.
Dire Straits started in the 1970's. This concert was 1983. Review Telegraph road too from this concert which is even better. Theyre all in their mid 70's now and still brilliant, mark has slowed down obviously with age but you never get sick of his playing.
You need to listen to Tunnel of Love live at Wembley for one of the best and most beautiful instrumentals by any band. Be prepared for 16 minutes of joy of which 6 minutes of it is pure ecstasy.
Seen these guys during the Money for Nothing tour. Absolutely killed it. The energy in the building was so high, when they busted out with Sultan's the place about exploded!
That’s true and all but how are they going to understand the true essence of this sentiment when they haven’t heard the original? This is why it sucks when reactors don’t get the chance to listen to the original song in its purest form first. You go FROM THAT TO these live performances like Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and confused and the wonder within (for that exact song) blooms like a flower unique to your own spirit but they’re robbed of that because the fans selfishly think of what their favorite version means to themselves.
@@toniobolonio This and the original are so different that one doesn't take anything away from the other. To accuse fans of being selfish for liking a particular version shows a staggering lack of understanding.

I thought Pic Withers, the original drummer couldn’t be bettered, but our Welsh friend nails it. Terry also played with my favourite band’Man’. Fabulous. I’m 67 and first heard Mark and the boys playing this 50 years ago.

My dad used to play this band specifically this song when i was back in elementary through middle school. And at 24 now i still be listening to this stuff, it’s just always good shit
The Dire Straits are TIGHT with their music. They seem to play effortlessly on their instruments, but you know there was a lot of time that went into playing together to make it look and sound so easy. What a tremendous band and you can see how much enjoyment they get performing together.
Nice to see todays youth vibing to a 40 year old track! Great reaction by both of you, she was a harder nut to crack but she got there :) Love from the UK xx
Dire Straits was a pop rock band from the UK... this was their first big single in 1978 from their 1st album. This performance was from 1984 on the tour for their 4th album 'Love over gold'. A year later in 1985, Dire Straits had a 9X platinum record 'Brothers in arms' ... thanks to the big MTV single 'Money for nothing' 👈🔥 Mark Knopfler (vocals & guitar) was the band's main member and songwriter... his singing style was a mix of Johnny Cash, Elvis & Bob Dylan. His guitar skills were exceptional - he could play ANY style of music... from blues to jazz, from country to rock... Dire Straits crossed a number of genres w/ their music. The original band was Mark Knopfler, his brother David Knopfler (guitar), Pick Withers (drums) & John Illsley (bass)... David Knopfler left after 2 albums, Withers left after 4th album. This performance in 1984 was w/ new members Alan Clark (keyboards), Hal Lindes (guitar) & Terry Williams (drums) who recorded the 'Brothers in arms' album in '85, which made Dire Straits superstars. Mark Knopfler was not happy w/ the band's massive status... in 1991, he recorded the band's final album 'On every street' and the band ended their career with a live album 'On the night' in 1993. Mark Knopfler returned in 1996 w/ a solo album 'Golden heart' and has been a solo artist ever since. He has no desire to bring back Dire Straits. Dire Straits has a wide range of songs to check out - 'Walk of life' ... 'Heavy fuel' ... 'Brothers in arms' ... 'Romeo & Juliet' ... 'Water of love' ... 'Twisting by the pool' ... 'Your latest trick' ... 'Calling Elvis'... 🔥🔥
Guy's I'm 60 this was one of my favorite band's as a teenager. They are not a new band. I love watching your generation listing to the words as much as the music. Irish rock influence with bluesy rock.
Post-punk was a really fascinating time for music because it combined a lot of different styles together including jazz ,soul ‘dub and funk with rock and roll and punk
He doesn't even use a guitar pick; straight finger action............amazing Love Dire Straits and Mark........funny story behind this song.........Mark wandered into a pub across from his Hotel in London and the place was virtually empty except there small group playing Swing like they were playing to 70K arena crowd...........so this song is tongue and cheek all the way.
Knopler's effortless confidence is even more impressive when you realize that he's a left-hander playing a right-handed guitar. He's also an accomplished producer and film-score composer, with "The Princess Bride" being amongst his many credits. To give a small idea of how influential Dire Straits were at the time, their "Brothers in Arms" album in 1985 is credited with launching the CD format, as it was the first work to sell over a million copies on the discs. That total now stands at over 30 million units sold, and, almost 40 years on, "BiA" remains the 4th best-selling UK album ever.
Listen to Telegraph road by Dire Straits from the same concert. Mark Knopfler the guitarist with the headband is one of the best guitarists of all time.

This concert always reminds of what it's like to play in a band in front of people, with a bunch of your friends on the other instruments. It's like hosting a party where you get to do exactly what YOU want, and everyone applauds for you with genuine appreciation. It's a lot of people's dream night. More of us should feel grateful more often for having had that in our lives. As for this song, when I saw it live it was pretty close to this, except the keyboard player got a huge solo.
I was up there for that, wearing filthy overalls covered in oil and shit from work, as my car broke down on my way home from work…in the end I left the bloody thing in the road, and walked to the train station…people on the tube weren’t happy getting squashed up against a stinking twat who left oil stains on their clothes…well worth it though, Hank Marvin coming on for ‘Going Home’ was fucking brilliant…

Just watching and listening to this outro solo on you tube is overwhelming imagine how the audience must feel
My advice would be to save the track Dire Straights - "Brother's in Arms" for Veterans Day😉
Totally agree...Full of emotion
Dire Straits started in the 1970's. This concert was 1983. Review Telegraph road too from this concert which is even better.
Theyre all in their mid 70's now and still brilliant, mark has slowed down obviously with age but you never get sick of his playing.
You need to listen to Tunnel of Love live at Wembley for one of the best and most beautiful instrumentals by any band. Be prepared for 16 minutes of joy of which 6 minutes of it is pure ecstasy.
I mean...that is an ear to ear grin from start to finish, from our man. He really dug this.
Seen these guys during the Money for Nothing tour. Absolutely killed it. The energy in the building was so high, when they busted out with Sultan's the place about exploded!
Mark Knopfler is the reason so many people gave up learning to play the guitar his skill level is insane
Congratulations, you`ve just watched the greatest live guitar track of all time. I was there and I can tell you, everyone was buzzing!
Any thing they do is magic. Their album Brothers in arms not one bad track.
They had a number of hits on the radio, but a must listen is "Brothers In Arms".
Recklezz: They got to speed it back up
Mark Knopfler: Hold my beer
Great reaction, good to see you both smiling at a cracking tune
Your enjoyment of that was highly infectious. Mark Knopfler was having a blast and think you picked up on that. Great reaction.
For a very different vibe, try Brothers in Arms...
flawlessly performed and articulated at up tempo!!!! THE REAL DEAL!!!!!!
@@toniobolonio Get over yourself…
1983 it was performed. They're all basically in their 70's now.
I loved your reaction...there was no keeping the grin off of your face while listening to this awesome song! I especially liked that you noticed and commented on the tiny bit of swagger Mark shows for a few seconds in his solo, lol. It made my day! Subbed a couple of weeks ago because of this particular reaction. Really enjoying your channel!
I thought Pic Withers, the original drummer couldn’t be bettered, but our Welsh friend nails it. Terry also played with my favourite band’Man’.
Fabulous. I’m 67 and first heard Mark and the boys playing this 50 years ago.
great sound on this--crisp clear drums and cool twangy Knopfler guitar............
It's amazing to me how many young people are willing to go on camera to display just how much they don't know.
Sorry this is a late but overdue comment from Australia 🇦🇺, I enjoy watching you guys discover new/old music, warms my heart. Glad you found this tune, I probably should have commented months before, as I’ve watched this many times. You’re unusual people and I like your take on some of the classics, but please read more. I don’t mean any disrespect but with pages comes experience and history will teach you loads about music. But you’re young so I am just glad you’re listening
If you liked this, you'll really like the almost twelve minute version recorded in Basel, Switzerland. Check it out. Then check out "Romeo and Juliet" another stellar Dire Straits tune.
They've knocked out some epic songs, 3 of the best being 'Telegraph Road', 'Planet of New Orleans' and 'Brothers in Arms'
Watching that made you both very happy - that ought to be a clue just how great this band is.
Amazing band, very unique sound
My dad used to play this band specifically this song when i was back in elementary through middle school. And at 24 now i still be listening to this stuff, it’s just always good shit
The Dire Straits are TIGHT with their music. They seem to play effortlessly on their instruments, but you know there was a lot of time that went into playing together to make it look and sound so easy. What a tremendous band and you can see how much enjoyment they get performing together.
Nice to see todays youth vibing to a 40 year old track!
Great reaction by both of you, she was a harder nut to crack but she got there :) Love from the UK xx
The drummer is a significant element of this song. His HPM is incredible. Where did they learn Creole? France?
Dire Straits was a pop rock band from the UK... this was their first big single in 1978 from their 1st album. This performance was from 1984 on the tour for their 4th album 'Love over gold'. A year later in 1985, Dire Straits had a 9X platinum record 'Brothers in arms' ... thanks to the big MTV single 'Money for nothing' 👈🔥
Mark Knopfler (vocals & guitar) was the band's main member and songwriter... his singing style was a mix of Johnny Cash, Elvis & Bob Dylan.
Strange how nobody ever seems to acknowledge the influence that JJ Cale had on Knopfler's music...
This performance is from Hammersmith Odeon July 1983. Guesting on keys with Alan Clark for these shows Tommy Mandel.
Dire Straits were my first live concert in 1992 in Basel/Switzerland cool old sound!
Mark has a slow rif like no other. I love his soft soothing sounds that builds into big soothing sounds on that beautiful guitar 🎸
"Money For Nothing" is a must react to by Dire Straits. I know you know the tune when you hear it.
Just high energy throughout esp on drums
You can tell they are having a great time and love what they are doing! Love the reaction
Terry Williams the drummer, works harder in this song than just about any drummer I have ever seen.
I agree, I would say "Telegraph Road" is even a bit better.
Sultans of Swing is one of those songs you can 'rock' out too, but still just be chilling.
I just love ❤️ watching people enjoy great music 🎶.
You have found musical gold here, my absolute favorite band back in the day, heck, and today still 😎
When it comes to "guitar music", for me, Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits and David Gilmour/Pink Floyd has always been at the top. With Slash/Guns n Roses, John Frusciante/Red Hot Chilil Peppers, Malcolm Young/Angus Young/AC/DC as a close second.
not sure if you knew this or not but in the song he sung check out guitar George well he knows all those fancy chords the George he sings about is George Young brother of Mel and Angus and Harry is Harry Vander who with George played in the band The Easy Beats they also wrote many hit songs together
Totally agree with these 2 at the top. Cant say the same about the ones as "close second".
@@rustcohle9267 We are all influenced by different things. (in no particular order): Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, John Frusciante, Richard Z Kruspe, Adam Jones, Slash, Malcolm Young, Angus Young, Jerry Cantrell, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi, Jack White and a bunch of others.
Love you guys and another great reaction. There is plenty more for you to see. From the same concert Telegraph Road is a masterpiece. You also have Tunell of Love, Romeo and Juliet and the dark and brilliant Private Investigations. They have other masterpieces including the anti war song Brothers in Arms which is absolutely beautiful. They did a wonderful performance of that particular song at the Nelson Mandela tribute concert in 1988. Mark Knopfler is a songwriting genius and for me the greatest guitarist ever. You have John Ilsley on base here and the brilliant Terry Williams on drums with Alan Clark on piano. Hal Lindes is on rythym guitar. As you observed, all are absolutely brilliant musicians. You will love getting to know these guys. Thank you and warmest wishes from the UK. Take care.
Watch Dire Straits play Telegraph Road on the same Alchemy Live concert. Even better. Also the original music video of Brothers in arms.
There's six members on stage, Mark the leader, singer and lead guitarist, then John the tall bassist, Hal the blonde rhythm guitar, Terry Williams the drummer, Alan Clark the main piano keyboard ywoth the five sets of keys then the sixth guy with three rows of keys but forgot his name.
PS mark is a finger picker so all his fast guitar work is done with bare fingers and no pick/plectrum.
Lead Guitar Mark Knopfler
Bass Guitar, John Illsey
Rhythm Guitar, Hal Lindes
Drums, Terry Williams
Keys. Alan Clark
Keys guest for these shows, Tommy Mandel
And Mel Collins on the sax…
@@45dda not on this performance
David Knopfler on rythm, not Hal Lindes - he came in on rhythm after David left
This concert always reminds of what it's like to play in a band in front of people, with a bunch of your friends on the other instruments. It's like hosting a party where you get to do exactly what YOU want, and everyone applauds for you with genuine appreciation. It's a lot of people's dream night. More of us should feel grateful more often for having had that in our lives. As for this song, when I saw it live it was pretty close to this, except the keyboard player got a huge solo.
Tunnel of Love from the 85 Wembley concert is one of my fave guitar solos...so chill
Trhank you for choosing the Alchemy concert version. Studio version is obviously fantastic but once you see and hear this video, it's so damn good you're hooked on it forever.
In 1968 as an 8th grader I saw the great Alvin Lee an Ten Years After play Goin Home in a concert at Stony Brook NY. They killed it again a year later at Woodstock. Ten years later Knofler and Dire Straits gifted this masterpiece to the world. It is music of a same type. Brilliant. Powerful. Awe inspiring. Great every time it is heard by anyone on this planet
Listen to Dire Straits: "Brothers in Arms", "Skateaway" and "Walk of Life". Even their band name is super kewl..
