If you think it's insane that you're listening to a song from 45 years ago, it's even more insane that Mark Knopfler (the guy in red) just released a new album yesterday. That's April 12, 2024. He's 74 years old and still recording, although I don't think he's planning to tour anymore. (I'm younger than he is, and I don't want to travel for work anymore either.) In addition to his work as a singer and guitarist, he also wrote all the songs on all six Dire Straits albums. Then he went on write all the songs on ten solo albums. And he did nine film soundtracks too. If you start exploring his work in earnest, you're not going to run out of material any time soon
The thing withMark.is that he is so modest..I wonder if he realizes what musical gifts he has..Absolutely love this music..So glad I was around when we had such beautiful music. I saw their Alchemy concert in London and have never forgotten it..MK is possessed with genius..
I’m the same age as Mark 74 and saw them live twice back in the day 1978 & 1984 this is my favourite performance of all time and will be playing at my funeral.
Yep, me too, my favourite recording of music, ever. I discovered them in 1985 when I was 12 and saved up all my babysitting money to buy Alchemy Live on double tape from WHSmiths. I've been through 2 CDs since, I think they had to work too hard, thank goodness for mobile phones and bluetooth now!
@@kathrynadamson3886 that’s amazing, I was 35 when you were 12 so 23 years older than you and we still like the same records. My best friend is 14 years younger than me and she likes the same kind of music, mainly 70s & 80s 😁
One of the best riffs ever. Any person listening to this song, even if this isn't your genre you can't help to move to this song. It's crazy. Timeless too.
Mark Knopfler tells a story and he let his guitar sing like no other. Especially this concert every note is perfect. Never heard anything close in a live concert. This song made me fan for life (35 years ago). All albums of Direstraits are original and exceptional!
About 45 years for me!! 78,79 or 80, this song catch me cause being about band life, like (turn the page) singing about what they knew about... on the road again 😂😂
The original studio version came out in 1978, on the band's first album, and was a huge hit. This "Alchemy" concert was in 1983. At that time the band had been through personnel changes and was almost a completely different group. This was right at the end of a tour, so the band is really tight, and the drummer, Terry Williams, is on fire. I've heard his family was at the concert and he really went all out. One of my favorite moments from this video is just before 3 minutes in your reaction video, where Williams does a particularly fabulous riff and Knopfler and the bass player look back at him and at each other, smiling, and you can tell even they were impressed.
Yep. Legend has it Terry's dad had come to see him play with the band for the first time that night and he wanted to impress him, so he was giving it everything he had.
@@Obi-J Just yesterday I watched a 30 min UA-cam video called "I'm just the drummer" or similar and it's about Terry Williams - it was so good! He discusses this concert too! Worth the watch....
Loved your reaction. Did you notice how comfortable and easy Mark Knopfler was finger plucking his guitar like a banjo and smiling all around? Pure talent.
Mark Knopfler hasn't got the voice of a Freddy Mercury, Pavarotti or any other gifted vocal artist, but I'll be damned if his Dylan-esque almost talking style isn't a match made in heaven with the musical genius that was Dire Straits. For similar epic songs check out Telegraph Road from the same gig or Tunnel of Love (this or any other concert).
I could tell you some stories about Mark when he was young practicing the guitar he would wake up with his guitar on his chest. The drummers dad was at the concert to watch his son play a gig for the very first time.
Mark Knopfler is a master story teller. His songs take you on a journey and always have a deeper meaning. His voice and guitar work together to add the emotion to the stories like no other.
This was pure talent. Mark the guitar player loves playing. He’s having the time of his life. He’s a class act he got his finger pickin from Chet Adkins
I've seen this hundreds of times. It never gets old. Knopfler is a maestro, top level guitarist. Your appreciation of this performance is a blessing to watch.😊❤
I'm 69 years old and while growing old sucks at least in my best most fun years of my life it was also 'The Golden Era Of Rock.' It was a time when exceptionally talented people created exceptional works of art, unlike today when half talented people rely on auto-tune and very often sample song from 'The Golden Era Of Rock' because they don't have the talent to create enough music of high enough quality for their songs. The test of time is what proves something to be exceptional, and the a good bit of 60s, 70s and some of the 80s music has more than stood up to the test of time and will continue to do so not only for decades but for as long as people listen to music.
The 1st time I heard this I was wowed about a dozen times - now after 30 plays this rolls into perfect symphony that could be called Marks joy to infinity.
I think a lot of people don't understand the lyrics in this (fabulous) song. In the 60s and 70s there were Friday night "Battle of the Bands" concerts in local areas where four or five or more local bands would compete in one place. "Competition from other places." That is what this is about. " Guitar George " knew all the chords, but he only had an old guitar because he couldn't afford a better one. Harry didn't mind if he didn't make the scene. "He had a daytime job and was doin' all right. There were some boys messing around in the corner of the room. The "man" steps up to the microphone to announce that it is time to go home. The competition was over. I've been there!
Need to tell you that the story is actually different, I've heard Mark Knopfler tell the story and it's simple. One night after practicing or something, he went into a bar and there was a band playing, not a very good band, they were called "The Sultans of Swing" Mark made up names and scenarios for each band member then went and wrote the song. That's it, nothing more complex. Just one of the top 5 songs of all time though
I’ve suddenly developed an addiction to watching reactions to this live performance 🎉 😅… edit: LMAO at “this is what strawberry cheesecake sounds like.” Perfect description‼️

If you like guitars, a couple of weeks ago Mark Knopfler released a charity single called "Guitar Heroes". It's a10-minute arrangement of an instrumental piece Knopfler wrote for the soundtrack of the movie "Local Hero", one of my favorite movies and where I first discovered Knopfler. The charity version features around 50 musicians with guitar GOATs including David Gilmour, Ronnie Wood, Slash, Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Brian May and many more . Roger Daltry plays harmonica, with Ringo & Zak Starr on drums and Sting on bass. No video, but this version identifies the players -- ua-cam.com/video/zBGm7gJtSZE/v-deo.html

Hey, there was no lip sync version. Dire Straits would never do lip sync that is offensive to say that. What you watched before was the studio version this is a live version that is off the charts Mark is left- handed this is a masterclass in how it’s done such a clean crisp outstanding performance. I have to add in if you notice there is a piano player and an organist.
The man in red is Mark Knopfler, one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters ever, this is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone!! The Alchemy concert is legendary, every song from it is amazing. I would recommend Private Investigations next, not from this concert though, try from the On The Night concert, which I think beats the Alchemy version.
John Illsley - Bass; Terry Williams - Drums; Alan Clarke - Keyboards; Hal Lindes - Rhythm Guitar - and not forgetting Mark Knopfler - lead. Unbelievably amazing.

I love this version and keep playing it over and over. Thank you. I enjoyed listening to you as well. Another old person here. Got married the in 78.
Lots of great tracks to do - Private investigations from on the night tour , telegraph road and tunnel of love from the alchemy concert. Then Brothers in arms, this came out with a grammy winning video which makes it even more powerful you should check that version, you could always do it live afterwards if you want. Mark Knopfler story telling genius and unique guitarist , the rest of the band is so talented and live they are unstoppable. You should know that when i was listening to this music when i was young our grandparents were complaining that music wasn't what it used to be in their day- thats always a thing!!
I think you are the first reactor I've seen play the whole second half all over again. And starting at some of the awesome drumming shots of Terry Williams. He was having a blast... and so were all the other band members and frontman Mark Knopfler! Not only that, the audience was so into it, clapping with the rhythm, becoming part of the performance and energy, hearts swelling and blood pumping as the pace increased... right through the crescendo, and then waiting, waiting... through Mark's tease... to the triumphant finish! And you were, too. That's the way! And that, is why... I just subscribed. Looking forward to watching your reactions ahead, and what you've already done. Suggestion: If you haven't reacted to Stevie Ray Vaughan yet, you are overdue. You could start with his 1989 Austin performance of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," then on to other live performances... SRV doing his "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love," "Leave My Girl Alone," "Texas Flood" (at the El Mocambo), "Look At Little Sister," "Couldn't Stand The Weather," "Life Without You" (Capitol Theater), "Riviera Paradise," "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (1989, Austin), "Rude Mood"/"Lovestruck Baby" (Daytona Beach), "Scuttle Buttin'," "Tin Pan Alley," and many more. Guitar god with an amazing blues-rock voice, Stevie will blow your mind. Not just for his technical mastery, but for him being such an endless conduit for the spirit of the music and the passion he delivers. He was born to play, and his band Double Trouble are awesome.
The studio version has its place, it's an excellent rendition, captured to be as close to how the author wanted the song to sound... But this is of course an exceptional live performance, like an almost ideal example of what it means to rock out on stage, and Knopfler's guitar as usual is smooth as silk and a joy to the ears.
This was from one of two 1983 concerts in London at the end of an eight-month tour, and recordings from the concerts were released the next year on double LP / CD as "Alchemy Live". A concert video was released years later. The Alchemy tracks are mostly rearrangements of songs from Dire Straits' career and Knopfler's movie soundtracks extended with improvised sections and are all highly recommended.
Ciertamente, me suscribo!! Un abrazo desde Chile ( al fin del mundo). ❤❤❤❤❤
it warms your heart when you see young Black hip hop and rap fans reacting to classic bands that would never cross their music radar. Great music is colour blind. You just need ears to be blown away
Everyone is perfect, but Terry Williams on drums was crazy. Now you must watch "Telegraph Line" from the same concert, one of the best live performances. Also "Tunnel of Love" live Wembley 85 is great
Great reaction brother - it was so cool to watch you so very into it.....from the momentary disappointment in your voice when you seemed to think the song was about to end to the way you went back and watched the last part again in enjoyed awe.😂 Great to see and glad you enjoyed it. Good luck

Now you need to react to Telegraph Road alchemy live. Even more phenomenal than this Also worth checking out is Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa doing I’d rather go blind (live in Amsterdam version) you’ll see someone equally as incredible on the guitar as well as Beth’s amazing voice.
Due to a medical issue with his legs during childhood, TW used to (very effectively) get everywhere using his arms which lead to great stamina and strength in his time as a drummer. A real down-to-earth guy too. While rock stars were spending their earnings on fast cars and fast living, he treated himself to something he wanted from being young…a beach hut overlooking Langland Bay, Swansea. Legend 👍
It’s very true what you say I’m always telling my kids they don’t make music like they used to when everybody sang live and sounded the same with no auto que and the musicians were so talented.dire straight were one of the best bands ever and in my opinion mark k offer is the best guitarist that’s lived he was and still is a phenomenal talent..great video and review anyway man keep doing your thing👍
It's what music was like in the 60's and 70's......no Autotune, backing tracks, no sampling etc. Just talented musicians doing what they are good at!

@@dame313 I have already done so. Keep up the good work!
Folk my ass…it is ROCK.🤣
Yes!!❤
This was from one of two 1983 concerts in London at the end of an eight-month tour, and recordings from the concerts were released the next year on double LP / CD as "Alchemy Live". A concert video was released years later. The Alchemy tracks are mostly rearrangements of songs from Dire Straits' career and Knopfler's movie soundtracks extended with improvised sections and are all highly recommended.

Heals the soul mk = talent been listening to dire straits since about 1980 thy are in thr own league..
Guitar pluckking is exactly what Mark does!
Now we're talking. Glad you took the advice to listen to this version as well.👍🎸👌
The ‘main man’ is the magnificent Mr Mark Knopfler
Mark Knofler rules the strings.
I loved your reaction. Thank you
When bands were bands.

Like a locamotive coming through my house
Everyone is perfect, but Terry Williams on drums was crazy. Now you must watch "Telegraph Line" from the same concert, one of the best live performances. Also "Tunnel of Love" live Wembley 85 is great
Telegraph Road :)
Yeah, that was great! I remember when that song hit the radio stations.
Great reaction!
He has mastered his craft, so when he plays and sings he can relax and enjoy ☺️, it’s half the joy of the song ❤
Anyone who needs their mind blown,, this is it!
Now I know why this album is called Alchemy, because he's created pure Gold
concert was in 83
These were the generation of TALENTED MUSICIANS and which is hard to find. 😅
Great reaction brother - it was so cool to watch you so very into it.....from the momentary disappointment in your voice when you seemed to think the song was about to end to the way you went back and watched the last part again in enjoyed awe.😂
Great to see and glad you enjoyed it.
Good luck
Try Telegraph road, same live concert!
Pure perfection

Now you need to react to Telegraph Road alchemy live. Even more phenomenal than this Also worth checking out is Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa doing I’d rather go blind (live in Amsterdam version) you’ll see someone equally as incredible on the guitar as well as Beth’s amazing voice.
Héllo de France Bonsoir regarder le live Télégraph Road de 1985 super 😊😊

Your reaction perfect ❤
I'm sure Terry Williams on drums must have OD'd on Red Bull 🤣
Monster for sure
Due to a medical issue with his legs during childhood, TW used to (very effectively) get everywhere using his arms which lead to great stamina and strength in his time as a drummer. A real down-to-earth guy too. While rock stars were spending their earnings on fast cars and fast living, he treated himself to something he wanted from being young…a beach hut overlooking Langland Bay, Swansea. Legend 👍
Modified Fender. Amazing because those instruments generally highlight riffs and deep chords. He makes it sound like a hollow body
Good, very good reaction! So I subscribe.... Good on ya.....
Made my day, week and year hearing this - reaction cool
When I herd this as a kid didn't know if I wanted to be a guitarist or a drummer outstanding
