Your hearing one if the best guitar players that has ever lived, as far as singing, he’s telling a story about a band, in this case a super tight group
This is Dire Straits, an English band that played from 1978-1992 roughly. They were at the time of this concert, and even more so with their next album “Brothers In Arms” (you must know “Money for Nothing” from that) the biggest rock band in the word. This song is from their first album from 1978, this version is from Alchemy, a live album from 1984. The main guy with the guitar and singing is Mark Knopfler, one of the greatest guitar players ever, famous for his fingerpicking style - and the rest of the band are equally brilliant. Knopfler and bass player John Ilsley are the original members and the only ones to in the band the whole time, the others changed a bi over the years. Mark Knopfler writes all the music, and many songs, like this one, is a situation he experienced. Sultans Of Swing is about a (not very good) pub jazz band he that happened to be playing in a bar he walked into. All their music is fantastic - the whole of the Alchemy album is as brilliant and breathtaking as this… Knopfler has done lots of solo albums and a lot of movie soundtracks as well.
Such a great, brilliant band. At 70, I am of an age that was blessed to see them live. Dance, cheer and laugh with them. Awesome. There Charity work was and is amazing.
Awom, this song is about a band - "The Sultans of Swing", that Mark (red jacket) heard south of the River Thames in London. He met the guitarists Harry and George. Mark is playing a a banjo style called "ckickin' pickin". Glad you enjoyed it, I subscribed.
