I heard that's also part of the reason for the tempo, that he was worked-up cuz his Dad was there, so he came out a little fast, and Mark & the boys just rolled with it and delivered this awesome performance.

I didn't know that! Holy cow, no wonder there's so much energy in it! Still my favorite version of the tune. There's always something with musicians and their dads, isn't there? I recall an old interview with Eddie Money where he said his dad never thought much of what Ed did for a living - until he went to a show and saw his boy sweating on stage. To dad, sweat=real job.
This was 1979 right? I'm sure that was the year I saw them play this live. Yup, tempo much faster than usual for this song, but this was the greatest rendition of it.
@@TorrentUK A little bit later. Alchemy Live was recorded at The Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1983. That place must have great acoustics because every live band performance I've watched from that venue sounds fantastic. Iron Maidens live show Beast Over Hammersmith was recorded there in 1982 and the production and sound is amazing. Obviously these kinds of bands have great audio techs as well but there have been many epic gigs recorded there.
What I love most about this performance is the total lack of ego. It's just a bunch of guys on the stage, completely in the zone and having the time of their lives. They know they're killing it; that they're all performing absolutely at their peak; but instead of strutting, yelling, or barrelling around they just have these grins plastered across their faces and a vibe with the music. Mark pulls out an outrageous solo and then backs off to let the other players have their moment at the front. Terry has his dad watching, is utterly juiced and is playing like a man possessed and the others are right along with him despite it being and unsual tempo for the song. And all the time they are waxing and waning the tempo, teasing the audience with adrenaline highs and lows right up to the sublime finish. There have been bigger concerts, more charismatic performances, and more iconic songs; but when it comes to the pure joy of what music can bring to the world I don't think anything has ever come close to this set...

YES. I LOVE this line. ‘And the next night they did it all over again, only this time with Sony Walkmen.’ When I started taking girls home with me, as a teenager, ‘Communique’ was the album I always put on the record player; I eventually made a Dire Straits compilation tape that contained all the best songs from ‘Communique’, plus ‘Down To the Waterline’ (my favourite ‘make-out song’ of all time), ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Skateaway’, ‘Telegraph Road’, ‘Private Investigations’, ‘On Every Street’, and a few more great Dire Straits melodies. The idea was to plays some ‘mood music’ that still rocked, but also I knew that if she asked me to change the music, we didn’t have an hope in hell.
I'm from Zagreb, Croatia. When Dire Straits performed here in 1990ies my friend, who at that time made handmade electric guitars gave him a red guitar, one of the favorite guitars on which Mark played at concerts. Believe it or not. They started their worldwide tour for Brothers in Arms in Zagreb. And also there is one interesting video of Brothers in Arms on UA-cam filmed during a real war (Croatian liberation), in the early autumn of 1991, in Croatia. You should watch that at ua-cam.com/video/ghBkZCN16o8/v-deo.html. Think it is the best contribution to this Dire Straits song ever.
These guys came up playing in pubs and other small venues, until they started to catch on and play bigger spaces. This show is in a theater that holds 3,500 people. Two years later, they were playing the big stadium shows in front of 80,000. Working at that level kind of burned them out, though, which is why Dire Straits isn't still going. However, Mark Knopfler, the singer, lead guitarist, and songwriter, is still creating new music. He's 74, almost 75, and his latest album came out in April 2024. It made it to #3 on the British album charts, right behind Beyonce. He also owns a professional recording studio in London. If you like his work, there are 6 Dire Straits studio albums and a lot of live material. He's also done 10 solo albums, 9 film scores, and a ton of collaborations with other artists. So there's lots to explore.
This song is actually a true story. Mark Knopfler (Pre Fame) stopped into a music club one night and watched a band. They performed almost comically terribly but at the end the singer said "Thank you, we are The Sultans of Swing."
Both Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing are based on actual phrases heard IRL by innocent people who never got famous. Now they are but we don't know their names
November 2024. Can't stop watching this. Great to see a young kid getting so excited about this. One of the best performances by the best guitar and drum...etc.
Everything from the Alchemy shows is perfection. "Tunnel Of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo And Juliet", "Two Young Lovers", the entire show from beginning to end is magnificent, the DVD is out there to be had.
It’s the only video of a concert that I can watch on repeat. Telegraph Road has always been a favourite of mine but this version from this concert is the gold star version; the album version pales in comparison.
I love how you giggled cause you really loved that song so much... its one of the best classic rock jams of all time. The guitar solo has been considered one of top 10 best In rock by alot of people. Glad you liked it. First time I ever saw you, will look you up again!
Dire Straits may be one of the most important bands during the transformation period between the 1970s and the 1980s. They were certainly instrumental in paging the sound of the new era. I can still remember well how Sultans of Swing hit us to the musical core in 1978/79 and I had to buy the record immediately. Imagine being there on a live concert.
What makes this performance so remarkable is Terry Williams was told to just go all out on the drums and the rest of the band matched him, beat for beat seamlessly. Guitar, drums, keyboard, bass. This song hits you from all angles.
In '82 what ever album telegraph rd was on was being toured pre -money for nothing days & they were defo a very tight musically band. No support group & nowt fancy but a great concert which i remember having a great aged 16 night with me mate!
10 of the best minutes on UA-cam. DS is a fantastic band and this is them at their best. Terry Williams is a beast on the kit, and of course Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. Totally unique.
"Telegraph Road", "Telegraph Road"...from this Alchemy tour. Masterpiece you need in your life! The keyboardist will be the member getting your attention. The interplay between Mark on guitar and the keyboard is unbelievable.
Hard not to love the drummer in this performance. But Knopfler is the true star. He's an acknowledged guitar god and this song really shows off his skill and mastery of dynamics and atmosphere.
Great reaction Stacey. I loved seeing the smile this put on your face! I'm so grateful I grew up hearing 60s, 70s, and 80s music. I just assumed music would always be this good. Boy was I wrong. It's nice to see younger people discover why we older folks say they don't make music like they used to. At least you didn't miss out completely, and can discover it this way.
I love watching you watch this song it’s priceless and by far my favorite to watch you It is a great song I remember when it came out one of my favorites. I’ll be 70 in 2 months and the music I have seen is so great
I hate to tell you this but Mark knopfler is in a league of his own, please don't get me wrong they're all brilliant musicians but Mark is at the top of the table.
The thing about Dire Straits is highlighted in this song: they are the true artists. They don’t need computers to enhance their sound and… they are live better then studio because they can showcase their talent. Not so much anymore nowadays. Alchemy is their best album HANDS DOWN! I like how she showcases the drummer as he gets often forgotten because of this crazy level of guitar play while they look like it’s no big deal !
What I love most about this performance is that all the musicians on stage are supremely confident in their abilities (and rightly so) which means they are relaxed, in the zone and enjoying themselves. When they enjoy themselves, so do we! It's quite funny that the song is about a band who play for fun in a pub and they aren't very good.
Mark's guitar style is very unique. He is a rare finger picking electric guitar player. I'm surprised other rock guitarist weren't inspired by him to get rid of the pick.
He's been playing that way since the sixties, but to answer to your question, probably finger picking against flat is the harder technique, plus the issue of volume. He once said the best amp you can have is a plectrum.
Your expressions say it all, it was such a great time to grow up in with all the genuine talent we had in the seventies and eighties and so much british talent, no computers overlaying just pure talent. Great review, great channel
Dire Straits is a retired band now. It was all about Mark Knopfler anyway. He’s the lead singer & guitar player of his own band now. He is also considered to be one of the greatest guitar players in the world 🎸! He is an inspiration to musicians from around the world. I have all of his music that he produced in the past 50 years. He’s an excellent storyteller with music that contributes to the feeling of the story. He has even written, composed, preformed and produced most of his music. He’s 75 years old now. But he’s still got it!😎✌️
Aloha Stacey , your appreciation and your reactions ad so much for the fact that this video was recorded 40 plus years ago , music even back in your " stone age " makes me smile and also tear up for several reasons ,one your great reactions and for me takes me back to when I was your age " back in the day " Gorgeous you are Luv
I saw 'em on their "love over gold" tour in 1982, they were big but not yet "money for nothing" huge & to this day i remember how tight a sound they were & i'm in no way their biggest fan. But live defo very good, no support band & no fancy effects just great sounds which back then was enough!
I was there, as a 19 year old kid. (I’m 60 now) and we walked out of the show drenched with sweat and exhausted. DS and Mark Knophler. Accept no substitutes. ❤️🫡🤘🏼
And these are Boomers! Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist, is actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different than other guitarists. He's also self taught, couldn't read music, and doesn't use a pick. He uses his thumb and first three fingers to pluck the strings with his finger tips, in what is known as the banjo roll. Mark is one of maybe 10 guitarists in the world that can run and maintain multiple 1/16th note riffs fingertip style. Classical and Spanish guitarists are amazed at and revere this man as a GOD. He's definitely in my top 10. No true way to decide who's the best in the world is, but he's definitely top 5. AND NO AOTU TUNE! Pure talent!
The band was dissolved in 1995 and inducted into the R&RHOF 2018. Mark Knopfler, leader, singer, lead guitar, songwriter he also lead a British country band the Notting Hillbillies. One of the most distinctive guitar sounds you'll ever hear. He's 74 now.
I dragged a different friend to the three Notting Hillbillies’ concerts at the Town & Country Club in North London back in the day. Fantastic gigs and each friend enjoyed themselves too!
It's a hell of a ride they're taking us on. Here's the thing... THEY are old school Rock and Roll, and you can not get this level of artistry any more. The drummer is astounding for sure. You should really listen to the studio cut. I promise you that when you do, You will REALLY see how this live performance is worlds above!
This performance is just so different than the studio version, it drastically highlights how much these musicians are just PLAYING with the song ... I mean they aren't just adding flair ... they are a billion times over giving life to the flair
Mark Knopfler's guitar is another vocalist in this band, it just sings. Another reactor said after hearing this performance for the first time: "If you don't like this, I'm glad I wasn't born with your ears." Sums it up perfectly. 🙂
I was a teenager working in radio when the record came out ("Sultans of Swing" was their first 'hit' in the US). Was driving home after my shift when the guy on-air after me played it. At first, I thought it was Bob Dylan with a head cold. And then the guitar started playing. I turned around and drove back to the station.."WTF * was * that?!?" For fun try "Industrial Disease", for a solid groove and more guitar, try "Expresso (yes, he spelled it like that) Love". Congrats on discovering one of the best rock bands that ever existed -or ever will. People will still be listening to Dire Straits 200yrs from now.
Es muy gratificante ver a jóvenes como usted emocionarse escuchando la que es para muchos la mejor música de todos los tiempos. FELICIDADES Y muchas muchas gracias desde España ❤
The drummer Terry Williams’ father was attending this venue and Terry wanted to impress him so went crazy in one of Dire Straits best performance. That being said Terry and all band members are amazing always

Then ,, the sound of silence by disturbed. Changed me an my daughter's way of looking at music very powerful. Keep up the good work. Your honesty is what makes you watchable.
The singer/lead guitarist is Mark Knopfler. He also writes the songs. I recommend Telegraph Road from this same concert. This is a great band, especially live. Mark is the epitome of cool. I love him so much!
Stacey, many "monster" guitarists were asked what it's like to be the greatest guitarists of all time. Their reply was always short and to the point, "I don't know, go ask Mark Knopfler". You didn't want this song to end. No worries, this song never leaves you. This concert was Dire Straits very best. I was a professional bass guitarist for 20 years. This performance brings tears to my eyes with every play!
Private Investigations, Telegraph Road, Romeo & Juliet from this Alchemy Live album, are stunning. Also, Your Latest Trick is one of my favourites that seldom gets a mention.
Mark Knopfler is one of the few guitarists, who picks the guitar with his fingers instead of using a plectrum. By doing so he can play these signature fast arpeggios and runs in his solos. And the drummer Terry Williams is really the best part in this performance. Allegedly his dad was in the audience, so he ramped it up a little to impress him…!
The guitars are played clean (no distortion). That tends to keep guitarists honest. There's no room for flubbed or missed notes, but the musicianship is right out front for everyone to hear and the skill level required to play this way is off the charts!
Love your reaction, so cute! 💗You got it, you felt it, you got hooked from the very first moment. 🤗 Can you imagine this masterpiece is 40 years old already?? But still gold!! I'm 55yo but still swinging and bouncing, can't get enough of these guys 👏🕺
Yout could well argue band of the 1970's . What ever your favourite band of course ! A great band . But there were "others" = Joy Division, REM , Dead Can Dance and my own Number 1 = Wall of Voodoo.
Dire Straits, The Police and Queen saved rock music during the 80s. If you turned on the radio back then, as far as I remember, it was almost only Michael Jackson, Madonna and some, in my opinion, terrible electropop bands.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩

Stacey, I knew you would enjoy this, it's great to see how excited you are about a band I have loved for decades. This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone, it is from the Alchemy concert, pick any song from that show and it will amaze you. As you dig deeper into this band you will come to know Mark Knopfler, his the the lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter of the band, a true musical legend, he is simply someone who cN do no wrong musically. He also has a long solo career with yet more amazing songs, he is one of the greatest guitarists of all time (The best for me) he is so good, even people who don't like his music respect his guitar prowess. I would recommend the song Telegraph Road from the Alchemy concert next.
He also is a finger picker. The drummers dad was in the audience that night so the told the drummer he pretty much had free reigns. That's why the guitarists were laughing at the beginning
Haha I found it really cute how you actually got a sad expression in your face when they broke it down to announce the end of the song. I usually don't care much for reaction videos but I always enjoy yours, since your reactions are so genuine and transparent. Good work and thank you!
Love your reaction to this. Finally, a reaction worthy of this stunning performance. Speaking of tearing up, the live version of Telegraph Road does that to me when it hits the slower piano part.
I saw them in concert in Kansas City, MO on their debut album tour shortly after turning the ripe age of 18. They opened with Sultans of Swing and it was all amazing from that point on. Very raw, no fancy lights as you mentioned, just unbridled talent playing hard and having fun doing it. Please do a reaction to "In the Gallery", which is also on their debut album. I love your reactions, definitely one of my favorite reaction channels.

The lead singer and guitarist, is probably one of the best guitarists of our age...this band is so well oiled its insane!
Not even close i wouldn't put him in the top 20 guitarists
You might want a conversation with those top 20 guitarists. @mikereed8181
@@mikereed8181what a pillerk👀😳🥴😂😂
@@grantkelbrick2554 i wouldn't put him in the top 50 never mind top 20
Forget about guitarist that Drumming is what made this
Great reaction... "I want it to go on forever" I heard this 20 times and I'm still not tired of it. Thanks!
I graduated from high school in '77...Dire Straits was the sound of the '80s....perfect sound.
What makes this performance so remarkable is Terry Williams was told to just go all out on the drums and the rest of the band matched him, beat for beat seamlessly.
Guitar, drums, keyboard, bass. This song hits you from all angles.
You have to hear Telegraph Road from this concert! Yes, Terry Williams is a tight AF drummer.
Mark is one of the great storytellers and guitarsts of our time.
Great review Stacey…..
It’s uplifting to see today’s youth realise how good these old guys play music..
I've loved Dire Straits since this song hit the radio. I got to see a solo Mark Knofler show in Indy about 20 years ago. It was magnificent.
This song was the number 1 most played song in our house parties in the 80s. There was no song like Sultans of Swing. ♥️🎼
Welcome to the world of Dire Straits, it took a while but well worth it, love your reaction. So much good tunes to come, bring it on
whether it's Music, Sport, Acting, or even War, us Brits hit hard, also I'm sure someone has already pointed it out but you are seriously beautiful.
I’ll be 70 in 2 months and the music I have seen is so great
What makes Dire Straits is that the band mates are all of equal talent. And the talent level is really high.
I'm sorry they are all great, but Mark Knopfler is on another level. In this one song Terry Williams on Drums almost hangs with Mark.
They play the dynamics of the live performance to perfection. True musical artists at work…playing their audience. You will enjoy discovering them 👍
not everyone realizes how good the drummer is and how hard he's working.
N" No, I dont want it to end"... lol... my thoughts everytime!
You’ve peaked with this one not only is this one of this bands best ever live performances, but one of the greatest live performances of all time.
Incredible performance, thanks Stacey.
"Telegraph Road" and "Brothers in Arms" ....are fantastic !!!!!!!
Pure talent!
i did not know that he's a left handed🙂
Calling Elvis and Brothers in Arms from on the night are spectacularly good. Well worth a watch.
Absolutely agree - that gig doesn’t get enough reactions!
That show is pure magic from start to finish.
I can't believe it isn't more recognized
The band was dissolved in 1995 and inducted into the R&RHOF 2018. Mark Knopfler, leader, singer, lead guitar, songwriter he also lead a British country band the Notting Hillbillies. One of the most distinctive guitar sounds you'll ever hear. He's 74 now.
And MK is still recording & touring! Rumour has it there is another disc soon to be released :)
I dragged a different friend to the three Notting Hillbillies’ concerts at the Town & Country Club in North London back in the day. Fantastic gigs and each friend enjoyed themselves too!
@@Quartzmonzonite I never saw Mark play live in person. But I did/maybe do, have an album of the Notting hillbillies.
@@bertjones3010 Dire Straits’ manager, Ed Bicknell, was the NHB’s drummer.
Telegraph road from the same concert is even better. I saw them live in 1991 and it’s still the best thing I’ve ever seen live.
You really honored Mark Knofpler and Dire Straits with your reaction video! One of the best reaction videos I´ve seen!
You also “ knocked it out of the park” with your awesome reaction ! Loved it.
The entire song is a conversation between Mark and the guitar. Simply the best.
I was there, Gandalf! When musicians actually knew how to make music! I was THERE!
Me to…..what a night!
my dad showed me this at the age of 8 this was my first addiction
Es muy gratificante ver a jóvenes como usted emocionarse escuchando la que es para muchos la mejor música de todos los tiempos. FELICIDADES
Y muchas muchas gracias desde España ❤
love it when todays young get into and enjoy the talent of yesterdays true musicians..
The drummer Terry Williams’ father was attending this venue and Terry wanted to impress him so went crazy in one of Dire Straits best performance. That being said Terry and all band members are amazing always
I can almost garantee you will tear up listening 'brothers in arms ' He wrote it after watching the brit troops in the falklands war in 82
Hello. Love your real response. First time seeing you. I'm a guitar player and introduced my daughter to older music and emotional music. So I'm paying forward if you see this.
Your Latest Trick is one of their best.
I agree, your latest trick is great
What a great reaction. You have got it completly right. Amazing talent on show from the best guitarist ever and the band are amazing. Thank you.
Your commentary was very impressive, expressive, honest, raw, and unfiltered. What a great complement to an Epic performance and band!
Mark Knopfler's song writing is genius story telling
The guitars are played clean (no distortion). That tends to keep guitarists honest. There's no room for flubbed or missed notes, but the musicianship is right out front for everyone to hear and the skill level required to play this way is off the charts!
Man Terry is the best, quick, and makes it look easy, good rhythm and exceptional.
Love your reaction, so cute! 💗You got it, you felt it, you got hooked from the very first moment. 🤗
Can you imagine this masterpiece is 40 years old already?? But still gold!!
I'm 55yo but still swinging and bouncing, can't get enough of these guys 👏🕺
Best band of the 80s by far.
Yout could well argue band of the 1970's . What ever your favourite band of course !
A great band . But there were "others" = Joy Division, REM , Dead Can Dance and my own Number 1 = Wall of Voodoo.
Still is !!!!
Dire Straits, The Police and Queen saved rock music during the 80s. If you turned on the radio back then, as far as I remember, it was almost only Michael Jackson, Madonna and some, in my opinion, terrible electropop bands.
You're right. They are each so good at what they do. Very nice. Nice review as well.
A great band = a great reaction. I have a soft spot for Dire Strait’s Romeo and Juliet - a great love song. Enjoy 👍
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩
This might be THE best live performance EVER
This, and Queen on Live Aid, and............well, that's about it !
everyone comments on this great drummer, much like the early ac/dc drummer whos fantastic and appealing to see and hear. of course marks incredible guitar work the best. concert was 9/10 superb btw he brings in a terrific sax player leading up to tunnel of love.
Hi Stacey, awesome reaction. Also check out the song “Brothers in Arms” studio version with the video.
Hell of an intro to mark knopflers abject genius....right on. & dont call yourself a nerd, after high school theres only two types of people: good ppl, & evil ppl...& ur very, very sweet. Love ur channel & the vibes:)
Greatest live performance in history!
Love Dire Straits....a band I wish could live forever. Mark makes the quitar sing. ❤
He also is a finger picker. The drummers dad was in the audience that night so the told the drummer he pretty much had free reigns. That's why the guitarists were laughing at the beginning
He was on fire!!! 🔥🔥
Haha I found it really cute how you actually got a sad expression in your face when they broke it down to announce the end of the song. I usually don't care much for reaction videos but I always enjoy yours, since your reactions are so genuine and transparent. Good work and thank you!
Another stage full of top quality musicians, you spoil us 👍❤🏴
Love your reaction to this. Finally, a reaction worthy of this stunning performance. Speaking of tearing up, the live version of Telegraph Road does that to me when it hits the slower piano part.
That guitar solo was on the best in Rock History. Congratulations🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
David Gilmore in Comfortably Numb on the Pulse performance would also be up there.
Their first album is incredible and Mark Knopfler has a huge solo catalog. Easy to listen to.
