Damn, imagine being a 19 year old kid that had nothing to do with this getting publicly named as the top suspect in the biggest murder case in the country.
My brother was targeted as a suspect in the Atlanta Killings in the 1980s. They showed detectives breaking into the trunk of his car, and displayed his driver's license photo on tv.
I read about that and all of this in a magazine like Cleo or Cosmo at the time when I was only 22 and they said Manny's nipples were slit as well as the head was on the book shelf and at that point they didn't know who it was.
I graduated from Gainesville High School in 1990. Christa Hoyt was a year ahead of me and my friend. Thank you for handling this case with respect. It is still hard to watch anything about it. It was terrifying to live through.
Fellow Purple Hurricane here, 1987. I'd just moved to NYC at the of end that July, so wasn't in town when the murders happened. My boyfriend and I lived 50 yards from Christa, I attended GHS at the same time as her as well, though I didn't know her. I'm sorry you had to be there during that time. I had plenty of friends and family still in town, I know how scary it was for everyone.
Yeah unfortunately that statement is not true in real life. Virtually everyone's name will be lost to time, despite our attempts to build a lasting legacy through our children and our deeds. The only names that will be remembered are those who shaped the world for the better and indeed also for the worse. As a result we are more likely to remember villains than their victims.
The Judge, the Court, whatever you want to call them, should *NOT* punish (or even remove someone from the courtroom) anyone for yelling, screaming or expressing relief that the murderer of their child is going to jail. It's not like the dude leaped over 7 deputies and was smashing this dude's face in. This man was a monster. The Judge should've just sat there and let the man express his grief. The dude was already being escorted to a holding cell so the guy would've yelled for 20-30 seconds max.
@@jbzeigler it’s a courtroom, not a live show. i get what you’re saying, but there’s a standard of behavior/composure to be upheld in court. there’s a reason why there are times for victim impact statements. but who knows when someone’s emotions will get the better of them right?
@Benny ThaMac’s Journey , I can empathize with the loss of a loved one at the hands of another. It's not something you can get over, but you can still wish them peace. Finally a murderer that was given a death sentence and it was actually carried out fairly quickly instead of them sitting on death row for 30 years or more and dying of old age . Glad you're back Mike !
He must not have bothered appealing. Bobby Joe Long was convicted with the death penalty in Florida in the early 80's and wasn't executed until like May of 2018 or 2019. Sorry, mid-80's and 2019. But yeah. Oof
Due to the amount of people who are found to be innocent either during their death row time or too late, I actually think it's better that there's a delay.
@@lara_young I kinda fall in the middle. For instance, I watched a Texas Prison Documentary of a guy that was convicted and sentenced to death. He fought and fought and fought for I believe almost 8 years because he was innocent and a majority of the people thought he was innocent as well. His alibi was turned away due to a "race" thing in a good ole boy network...you get where I'm going with this. He, his family, his attorney, his preacher, etc..took it all the way to the top of the top and it ended with him being put in the gas chamber. All that fighting for years and years just for his fight to end in less than a minute - they said he was gone in less than a minute but it took 12 minutes for total death by gas. Was he really innocent? I don't know, but he sure had alot of people genuinely backing him. Anyway, it was a great Documentary and really opened my eyes even wider about the Death Penalty.
You can look at a few cases and go "hey death pentalty 100% good", but then when you see how many people are falsely convicted I hope that will change your mind. Did shoving people in jail forever stop the drug trade? Expecting "justice" for a murder is fucking stupid, killing someone else, even the person who did it, will not get your loved ones back.
I wouldn't consider 16 years quick. Your comment is a little conflicted. Are you really concerned about his suffering by being on death row? Or glad the Eye-for-an-Eye justice system was swift?
Seeing Mike narrating in a Scream mask makes the end of this shitty year moderately better. Thank you for working so hard to provide this content, sir.
My mom was in college, living in Gainesville, when this was happening, and when police found Manny and Tracy at an apartment complex right next to my mom's place, my mom's dad drove up that day and forced her to come stay back with them in DeLand until things died down. Edward Humphrey seemed like a troubled dude when he was younger, but he was marked with the stain of suspicion about this particular case, and that has to be hard to live with. It's a rare serial killer that won't even hesitate to advance once he realizes there is another man in the house. Most of them see a man as a threat and will wait until their victim is alone. The fact that Danny had no fear at all to break into that apartment with a big, athletic dude in the other room just speaks to how absolutely vicious he must have been.
I know people react differently while scared but I wish she had ran outside at that point instead of in to the bathroom. Not faulting her actions for the record.
When I was a toddler, we lived on the neighboring street from Danny Rollins and his father’s house. He basically refused to speak or socialize with men, but would jog up and down the sidewalks carrying firewood on his shoulder in front of women. He tried many times to talk to my mother and kids were told not to talk to him. Our house was broken into while he lived with his father, we weren’t home, but whoever did it rummaged through underwear and made a sandwich and left part of it behind. My mother had nightmares for years after Danny Rollins was finally caught. She is convinced he is the person that broke into our house way back then. It wasn’t the only house broken into at that time either.

The Gainsville Ripper Murders is one of the scariest stories ever told. Danny Rolling was an absolute monster. His crimes were both unimaginable and horrifying! I never understood why there was so little done on covering it. Well done, sir!
It was a massive story when the murders first happened. The reason he hasn't become very well-known is because he was caught and sentenced so quickly and with little fanfare (aka no televised trial or crazy interviews with reporters). There have been so many serial killers in the US, the ones that tend to be remembered are the ones who took a long time to catch (or were never caught), or the ones who participated in their media circuses. Ted Bundy is the poster boy for fitting both of those criteria, and he's the person who tends to come to mind first when Americans think of serial killers.

What I don't understand is in most cases these men are abused by their fathers, you'd think they'd go around killing men but almost always their take their trauma out on women
They may feel that their mothers didn't protect them when they should have.
Their father's abused a weaker person who couldn't fight back.

These serial killer types almost exclusively abuse those physically weaker than themselves.

It was a massive story when the murders first happened. The reason he hasn't become very well-known is because he was caught and sentenced so quickly and with little fanfare (aka no televised trial or crazy interviews with reporters). There have been so many serial killers in the US, the ones that tend to be remembered are the ones who took a long time to catch (or were never caught), or the ones who participated in their media circuses. Ted Bundy is the poster boy for fitting both of those criteria, and he's the person who tends to come to mind first when Americans think of serial killers.

I lived in Ocala at this time and my husband was a student at UF. I remember this case vividly and when he was arrested. I also knew Christa Hoyt’s aunt. It was a very scary time. To this day there is a mural in Gainesville in memory of the victims. We will never forget them.
Only 17 years old, that is truly tragic, i cannot imagine the fear of his victims, still so much life ahead, still so young... this man is a monster
I grew up just outside of Gainesville, and this was truly a frightening event; keeping many of us in a persistent state of anxiety. There is a large memorial on 34th dedicated to the victims. May they rest in peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
yes!! as a current uf student i pass that wall everyday on my way to work
I was a graduate student at the University of Florida in Gainesville when these murders happened. The university became a ghost town because so many students left town. It was eerie! We were greatly relieved when that demented Rolling was arrested!
BS
was right after Manny got killed, that's when it went insane. and we all knew it wasn't Ed, all of us.
I was in Ocala. Remember the groups of men took to the forest searching for him. Rollins was lucky the police found him, the mobs of angry North Floridians would have torn him to bits.
My jaw hit the ground with how quickly this guy struck before those students even had a chance to start classes. It was oddly interesting to learn that this was the inspiration for Scream. Thanks for the upload 👍
Hi Mike! I wanted to let you know that I am doing well but I’m in treatment for breast cancer. Sometimes it’s been hard to sleep because of random worries. I’ve been listening to your videos all night and they make sleep so easy. Your voice is soothing and I now know all of the stories so I don’t feel like I need to stay awake to see what happens next. So, the way you tell stories is helping people in ways you probably don’t know. I’m so grateful. I’m a Patreon supporter and thankful to be able to help in that tiny way. Stay safe my friend!!!! I read The Gainsville Ripper book a number of years ago. One part still sticks with me all these years later. He stood over one victim while she slept on the couch and watched her sleep. Before he killed her. The way it was described in the book stuck in my head all these years. Just plain creepy, that's stuff of nightmares. Great job as always Mike.
I've seen a couple videos on this case, and his singing and his line "I got something I got to do..." always gives me such chills.
His music is insanely good. Surprised that mike said it’s shite.
He was the absolute DEVIL of allll DEVILS and me also and I do not spook easily on top of the fact he is GONE now.... I rank him #1 as mike does not have the time to even go thru all of the stuff but if read more, many agree GhostFace was the most evil, intelligent serial killer in modern/modern history as in the mid 90's or so.... UGH,...
@@ReganMarcelis Intelligent? Lmao. You must have really low standards to believe this man was intelligent. I promise you, nobody "agrees" with your assessment.

But who will still ALWAYS KNOW that Mike here will deliver us something in a fresh and interesting way. And flawlessly balancing seriousness and respect with humor and a certain lightheartedness which never feels out of place. Bloody excellent channel. Few people know that Rolling's hideaway in the woods faced the backs of three of the apartments of those he killed. The police did not make the association and may not have picked up on him at all if it were not for that call.
I actually hadn't heard of this one probably because it's genuinely disturbing. Seems almost unreal
This one hit close to home. I graduated high school in 1990 and loads of friends went to UF only to be brought home by terrified parents. And then we all thought they’d caught the guy but… nope. Scary time.

You know he rehearsed his sentencing speech in front of a mirror. He seemed like he was playing a part, his facial expressions, tone of voice, everything was all an act to try and conceal the fact he was just pure evil.
The face he makes when he's being sentenced makes me want to slap him. Dude, your murdered several people....what did you expect...
Yeah he's so butthurt that he is getting a punishment after doing ......that. And apparently he slit Manny's nipples. He tortured Manny.

Didn't that happen to Richard ramirez, the night stalker? Didn't he marry someone when he was still alive? It's a shame that the gang of people who were attempting to Lynch him didn't get to finish the job because the cops showed up. What a waste of taxpayers money

Too bad he couldn't take his Dad out instead of the innocent young people. All his singing and theatrics make me sick. Evil, evil, man.
Father nurtured that evil. All his son wanted to do was music, and I suspect he endured humiliations and beatings for such an ‘unmanly’ career choice. Guess he saw his chance to sing in public and took it.
Did you notice after being sentenced to death, his comments to the court were lyrics?
His singing, weird poetry and that sad sap 'pity me' expression he slapped on is maddening.
I am sure he and Charles Manson would have been buddy like piggies: same psychopathy and full of themselves about their "artistic skills".
My channel covers true crime and one of the things that you see a LOT with killers and serial killers is that the killer was abused. Not all children who are abused turned into killers, but a LOT of these killers were abused as children.
I was 9 that summer and I remember walking home from my friends house thinking "the killer is at the college, not Tampa." I was terrified as my little mind went wild. Such a horrible tragedy. 💔
Great episode, Mike! Happy New Year to you. Small bit of trivia from me: My mom was a nurse in the Ocala County Jail at the time when Danny was in for the robbery. When the jail was informed that he was suspected in the Gville murders, she told her bosses she had treated him for a cut and had given him a bandage that they could save to compare to crime scene samples. Odd little story, but I always felt my mom’s stories from working at that jail were what sparked my interest in true crime! Love watching your videos!
The BTK murderer was caught when authorities ran DNA on the cervix cells from his daughter from a PAP smear. Your mom’s idea was spot on!!!
Your mom is awesome!
Very cool!
Wow- your Mom is one smart cookie! Thanks for sharing this anecdote...

I can only imagine being a family member or on the jury when ol' Danny started his monolog and fighting the urge to wanna beat the crap out of him.
Lethal injection was too kind.
He was an electric chair kinda guy.
My mother was on the jury. We talked a lot after the trial about how gross he and Sondra London were. There was definitely a desire, among the jury at least, to kick his ass during the serenade and his statement. During the penalty phase, they had to be so serious, my mom said she just felt sad and horrified.

I believe that it's important to invest in security features for your and your family's safety. I cannot imagine it being too expensive to reinforce your door(s) and windows even if it's just a better locking mechanism or system like adding a heavy duty (battering quality) deadbolt or door stopper. I mean even if it only lasts long enough for you to get to a firearm or weapon or secure your family and get police on the way. I would spend the money on it before I decide it's okay to risk my or my family's life. Sure, the odds of someone ever trying are low, but every security feature they have to defeat to get to you only reduces that chance. People are crazy.
Yes, but Manny was probably surprised, and Rolling had a marine issue k bar fighting knife. My money would have been on Manny had this a hole had not been wielding a huge knife ...
