The Homeless Teen Who Created Louis Vuitton

- Louis Vuitton is a household name, and one of the most famous brands in the world. But do you know the story of the house, which is steeped in war, greed, fashion, leather, canvas, and more? We begin our story detailing the life of Louis Vuitton himself, a young man from the French countryside who becomes a master trunk maker, and innovator of the travel essential in the 1800s. After his passing, his family begins to reinvent the brand to represent Louis Vuitton himself, as well as travel and luggage trends throughout the 1900s as well. Corporate infighting ensues, and eventually, Bernard Arnault, the now owner of LVMH, Louis Vuitton's parent company, effectively takes over the brand in the late 1980s. He eventually brings in Marc Jacobs to design for the house's first fashion line, and Marc brings culture and art to the house. Artists like Takashi Murakami, Stephen Sprouse, and Yayoi Kusama do collaboration collections with Louis Vuitton, under Marc's supervision. Kim Jones, now the designer of Dior Men and Fendi Womens, creates a blockbuster hit with his Supreme X Louis Vuitton collaboration collection. Eventually, Nicolas Ghesquière & Virgil Abloh join the mix and reinvent the house in their image as well. Vuitton's history is full of drama, deception, and iconic fashions, many you'll have to watch to see!

We stan a man who can give us all the tea on Louis Vuitton while having stains on his shirt
Right
The distressed look is all the rage rn
It’s powder - I think?
Only what a stain can easy be a fashion trend
Well you shouldn’t
Lmao at balenciaga not even caring that there was a whole ass war going on
Yeah man Cristobal balenciaga didn’t even give a fuck.
Building a gazebo during the civil war vibes
@@ameliajames1463 how would you like to be indoors and out of doors all at once?
LV was at it’s best when Marc was there hands down. Just like how Galliano was for Dior. Yeah I’m stuck in those era 😬
We all are
The Marc Jacobs era neon overprint bags are life
@Arf Arf Awoo yes lets be friends drop the insta
Arf Arf Awoo I’m down! 😋
me too gurrrll
the only history teacher that doesn't make me sleepy✨
This jajajaja
You should try Lucy Worsley
I don't really care about louis vuitton or fashion history in general really but this was super interesting ! (and as a French person I really appreciate that you try to pronounce the words and names correctly, sometimes it is a bit off but most of the time you do really well)
The "coffee table" that has been in my family room my entire life is very clearly a trunk. It is made of wood has locks and can be opened. A few years ago my mom discovered it was a Louis Vuitton trunk. We know it is a Louis Vuitton trunk because even though it does not have the classic logo on it it does have the Louis Vuitton label on the bottom. We do not know when it is dated too but both of us believe that it can be dated to the 1800s. Knowing how old this trunk might be is incredible. It is in great condition and honestly shows how these things were made to last.
Honestly Luke this video was on a whole new level. The amount of research, and pictures to tell the story. You really made an amazing little documentary. SOOO GOOD.
Did this man just make the Louis Vuitton print sound... interesting?
He did. He did indeed. It’s tacky to me cause of the over saturated knock offs out there😑
Love this as a series! There are so many houses with a shady history, Hermès next please! 🍵👀
Like that secret Birkin made of human skin on the order of a Saudi princess.
Nikola whaaaaatttt?!?! Spill the T
Nikola where did you find this information?
@@48mavemiss2 It's a well known rumour from the 1990s.
Nikola ahh- that’s creepy. I was a small child then and did care for fashion until I was in my mid/late 20’s. I’ll look into it.
The iconic Louis Vuitton monogram’s icons are actually from a church that has the icons on its walls. And the letters LV was added to make it a complete monogram. I read this in a pottery barn LV history book somewhere, but I can’t find any pictures of the church with the icons online
Maybe it's a Cathedral. It looks familiar and lots of French are Catholics.
I found that monograms are inspired by medieval art and Doge's palace in Venice. It has similar looking things carved on its front.
Baguette here and I see you making an effort with the french names, you were pretty spot on almost all of them, except for Nicolas Ghesquière, which is still a bit off but I see that you really tried and it's a bit of an unfair name, I think only baguettes would be able to say that 100% correctly. Still, good job on all the others (and there were a lot) so take this as encouragement because I still remember the Jeanne D'arc Alexander McQueen video hahaha, you've progressed a lot. Bon travail Luke !
Yes am early. Please do a video on underrated fashion brands who deserve more hype.
Gurrrl i am so early
Telfar
Yeah! He should do one on young up and coming designers!
Please do more fashion history videos! It’s very interesting content and I enjoy watching history videos in general. They’re even more fascinating when combined with fashion content though. :)
Luke is out here doing God's work by teaching the Children ... Yes god
IDK why but the sudden shifts to french accent cracks me up 😆 But at least she tried 👍🏽
i'm damned if i do and damned if i don't :(
HauteLeMode oh no hunny you did great. Props for going back and forth 🇺🇸 🔁 🇫🇷 many times
Can't wait to derail my AP World class with Louis Vuitton's history
Edit: omg ive never gotten this many likes- thank you 🥺🥺🥺
Make them CHOKE ON YOUR ELEGAAANZAAAAA
1:23 this guy was walking for three years wuuut
I love how these fashion houses history shows the evolution of the world in modernity with its roots in the industrial revolution, the rise of the self made wealth and the boom of the 1990s with globalist age. Its crazy to know how recent these developments for crazy fashion shows really are.
This episode taught me more than years of school in a much condensed and compelling format
crash course history who? i only know hautel'histoire
We need a history of Yohji Yamamoto and anti fashion 🙌🏻
The fast-paced and informative spilling of historical tea is so fun to watch!
I wasn't interested in this particular history lesson but I was told there would be tea so... 🍵
"BUT I AM LE TIRED" XD ah the dawn of the internet

Appreciated this, the history of luxury brands has always been of great interest. The people and history! Its more than just items.
I NEED you to do more history videos like this! I'm just getting into the fashion industry and this video has been really helpful for me to understand the history and general idea of LV. Would love to see some more of these videos!
ControVirgil 😹
The brand's cohesiveness went out the window post the 90s. All collections reflect the CD and not the brand somehow. However, all the artist and brand collaborations epic!
Yaaaas! I've been looking forward to this one since you announced it! I loooooove this series. You teach me so much!
Well-informed, well-edited and concise vid on LV's history. A must-watch reference for luxury brand newbies!
