ALEXANDER MCQUEEN DID WHAT TO MODELS?!? (explaining one of the creepiest fashion shows ever)

  • When it comes to scary and creepy fashion, Alexander McQueen usually takes the cake, and his A/W1998 collection, titled "Joan" is definitely weird. The collection was based on the French catholic martyr, Joan of Arc, who was famed for crossdressing in the 1400s. He utilized his impeccable tailoring skills, alongside his taste for blood, gore, and murder. If there's a collection that's gonna creep you out this Halloween, it's definitely McQueen's Joan.

I LOVE McQueen because he seemed to genuinely love women and I get the sense that he understood our world; how we are used and abused, how strong and capable we are yet so vulnerable and emotional, and he deeply wanted to provide for us something that not many bothered with.

ive seen a quote attributed to him that said that he saw his mother abused by his father and it made him want to design clothes for women that would protect them and make them seem dangerous or smthn like that idk it's been a while since ive read it and idk if it's even true but it's a nice thought

This was a blast from the past! I worked at Lee’s studio at the time, my job during this fashion show was to stand backstage just off the runway and help the models get off the runway and backstage...the contacts made it almost impossible for them to see once they exited the lights front of house. It was a hectic time in my life, but Lee was really a lovely guy. One of the few in the industry at the time who treated people ‘normally’. Thank you for the memories.

McQueen's 2007 show based on religious persecution and the Salem Witch Trials wasn't too far from this one. Happens to be one of my all time favorite runway shows in the history of fashion shows. Unfortunately you can't watch it anywhere with the original soundtrack and SFX which was much more foreboding than what's online now, guess there was some copyright issues. But I definitely remember that being a point where a lot of people were saying he was a devil worshipper thanks to that massive blood-colored pentagram on the circular floor that the models traced as a runway (that was so hardcore, love it).

Joan of Arc and the Romanov sisters are all martyrs. So when you know that, the inclusion of the Romanovs in print makes a lot more sense. Also the use of this red, the color of martyrs. I like the use of the Romanovs, too, as it shows that not much has changed when it comes to the brutality against women, and how they are celebrated and worshiped only after death.

I ♡ McQueen! I actually think McQueen is what got me excited about, and interested in fashion in the first place. All of the small details that equal the sum of the entire collection just gets to me in a way that most others don't. I've always been interested in more dark, morbid and macabre type things, so that could be another reason why I gravitate towards McQueen. I just think McQueen is very smart in how the collections are created and shown. I see art, design, architecture, storytelling, talent......

About the quilted pieces: nations such as the Aztecs actually used quilted construction in their layered fabric armor which proved very effective against arrows and Spanish swords. Could the use of quilted fabric have been an intentional sort of multicultural nod to other forms of armor (also tying in to the context of fighting another nation)?

I'm kind old fashioned and just like what I like..quilted fabric has been something I liked to wear since I was a child
I grew up in oregon and the winters were cold and lots of snow...quilted material kept me really warm and it was not heavy. It wasn't itchy like wool could be and it wasn't heavy like most warm coats could be.
As an adult i have a quilted robe and a quilted jacket that I wear a lot when it gets cold and it makes me feel like I did as a child..and I'm forty years old.
It's strange how certain cuts and certain fabrics can make you feel a certain way.

Hi. Common soldiers at the time of Joan of Arc wore something called a 'Jack of Plates', which was a quilted jacket with small pieces of iron sewn between the layers, they don't survive as often as the more usual plate armour as the fabric decays.
