- André Leon Talley's "The Chiffon Trenches" - bit.ly/2XIlkiu
André Leon Talley's memoir titled "The Chiffon Trenches" is one of the most insightful books on the style and society of the European fashion industry in the mid to late 20th century. André discusses his time working for some of fashion and art's greats like Andy Warhol, Anna Wintour, Diana Vreeland, John Fairchild, and Grace Mirabella while also showcasing fun anecdotes about designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Azzedine Alaïa, Manolo Blahnik, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and more! But the book also discusses lifelong friendships with two of fashion design's titans Karl Lagerfeld, the deceased former designer of Chanel and Fendi, and Yves Saint Laurent, the deceased heir to the Dior throne and one of the most creative fashion visionaries working in the 1960s and 1970s!

I’m not a person that gets star struck but If I met this man I’d probably cry. He was the first and for a long time only black man I saw in fashion. I’m definitely a fan. He has lead a life that few are lucky enough to live. He has also fought and endured so much just to get to where he is in life. He truly loves fashion and is a serious fashion historian. LOL 😂 that’s enough of my stanning. Thank you Luke for covering this book.
mizzmolly yes I have seen The Gospel According to Andrè and really enjoyed it. Edward is amazing. I first saw Edward in the September Issue Doc. It was a scene were Grace was telling him to speak up and fight for his ideas & opinions. Ever since I’ve been following his career. Definitely look forward to his book if and when he writes one.
I have met him in person, outside of a show during Paris Fashion Week. (i was a student in Paris and no joke, i went to that street just to see the 'exits' of editors from the show lol). He was JUST LIKE how he was in on TV. He was a judge on ANTM at that time. He was a bit sassy but he'd answer you if you asked him a question. I asked for a photo in which he agreed on, and then continue talking in French on the phone and it was apparently his driver on the phone lol. I could never forget that moment.
so true
Ardika Pradnya ❤️
I worked backstage at the fenty show in September and saw him sitting quietly watching everything that was going on and wanted to say hi to him SO BADLY but I didn't since you're technically not suppose to speak to celebrities as it is unprofessional while working.. I really regret not going up to him even for just a second :(
Andre made it through Jim Crow.
Living Legend.
Give Andre his flowers, all of His flowers now!
Living legend in HIS own mind .
@@cjordan1161 And youre a racist troll.
c jordan give it up 🙄
You know Dyshaun i never thought of that, omg he sure di, thanks bro.
I can't believe you're serving a one shoulder look. We Stan
groundbreaking for someone who hates asymmetry. im shook.
sis snapped
It's a real saga, first he was going on and on about how much he hated asymetry and now he rocking it in every video lol
And it ain't the first time either! He's either being telling us lies or he is trolling us right now. 😂
Nice! I love it!
Your outfit LITERALLY made my jaw drop to the floor. LOOOOOORD. I wasn't ready!!!
omg your top! babe yass
Luke, thank you so much for making the link to the book NOT from Amazon.
👏It👏did👏not👏go👏unnoticed👏
He did what he had to do
Ugh a KING
Amen 🙏🏾
fuck amazon!! all my homies hate amazon!!
Sis came thru with the sticky notes haha, we love a prepared queen who does her research.
Off topic but Luke has amazing shoulders and he looks great showing them off. He can really pull off the asymmetrical lewk
Can you believe he’s doing the one shoulder now? Revolutionary.
@@x0xmadix0x hahahahahah , I was doing that S***** in the 70s.
And, oh hello, thighs. Drooling.
"The Chiffon Trenches"? Genius title - I'm so here for it!!
17:00 I love Naomi and this is only referencing her, but implied as a generality... but it kind of kills me when celebrities try and convince you how loving and, down to earth, and generous other celebrities are, because they were kind to them. I mean of course Naomi is going to be kind to Andre, given who they both are. And I don't mean that as shade, I'm just saying... I don't need Madonna to convince me of how friendly Anna Wintour is. But call me when a taxi driver tells you of the kind gesture Anna bestowed upon him, and then my ears will perk up lol. Sorry for that rant. I've just been wanting to say that for years (-;
This!!!!!
''How people treat cleaners, drivers, waitress, secretaries show how good the person really is''
@@Dan-vr7zs Exactly!👍✌
100% when you can show gratitude, respect, and kindness to those who are in service to you, speaks volumes vs. someone who you have a mutually beneficial relationship.
My friends said I'm wonderful. That means nothing. Strangers said you're wonderful. That really means something.
I always enjoy this story from Jenna Sauers: “I once sat in a room with André Leon Talley and Peter Brant II while André Leon Talley talked about his many years in fashion. At one point, Talley touched on the reasons why he, growing up gay, black, and poor in pre-Civil Rights-era rural North Carolina, was too fearful to dress with the flamboyance he even then knew he favored.
Peter Brant II chose this moment to speak up. He said that he totally understood Talley's conundrum, because he, Peter Brant II, had gone to "a really prissy, uptight, all-boys prep school."
His younger brother Harry interrupted, "At least we had the Brant Auditorium, though."
Peter Brant II considered for a moment, then nodded and said, "And the Brant Lawn."
He had to put up with so much bullshit. How Andre didn’t smack them I’ll never know.
HA!!!!! White wealthy privilege doesn’t come with immunity from tonedeafness, I suppose!
Yikes on bikes!
This story is both hilarious and horrific
Lmao do they not teach self-awereness at fancy prep schools 🙄
They do...but it’s just for the scholarship kids.
Don't worry about Andre ; he was milking his gayness and blackness for ALL ITS WORTH . Peter play the game too. You see, EVERYONE plays the " I am more disadvantage than
you game " . Both of them full of bullshit. .
I thought I'd never be interested in reading a book about fashion people, but here I am omw to order this book from my local independent bookstore.
Virtue signaling : " at MY LOCAL INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE . " So , you people , ordering from Amazon : SHAME ON YOU ....... Suffocating living with " WOKE " people around you.
c jordan she didn’t say anything like that? Theres nothing wrong with supporting local businesses, especially during this time.
c jordan I know why you totally missed what she was trying to say. We all have unconscious bias and that plays into how we interpret things (reading comments) so if Bob writes: “My wife missed our 10-year anniversary,” men tend to think Bob is angry, while women are more likely to think Bob is sad. So that’s why this happy woman’s comment is shaming you and why you may feel offended by this. So are we suffocating or are you unaware? The previous question was added to point out unconscious bias, it’s the only thing in the comment intended to make you feel bad. If feeling bad occurred before that welcome to how we interpret emotions in text.
Such a classy, well put together review!
1.) You revealed just enough details to provide interest I buying the book without telling everything.
2.) You mentioned Eunice Johnson!!!
A true black icon in fashion that’s rarely mentioned. This woman was at one of the first black people in fashion at the couture shows in Paris.
She spearheaded influencing designers to feature black models in the industry.
She was the FIRST to create makeup and cosmetics for black women.
The fact that you highlighted her not only makes me want to buy the book ( my order is scheduled for delivery on Saturday), I’ll even be watching more of your videos.
You’re just awesome!!!
Can’t wait to see you on the front rows at the shows one day!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m a millennial and went to the Ebony Fashion Fair even when I was in college. It was alive and well in the 2000s. Not sure if it exists today. I LOVED it. The models had the coolest synchronized walks.
I'm most of the way through the book after you mentioned it on the pod! Fascinating read ty :)
Last time I was this early, Luke had the shirt over both shoulders
Could you please do a video about "gods & kings: the rise and fall of Alexander Mcqueen and John Galliano.
yes
oh hell yeah
YESSS !!
Oh honey that book is a must read 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That book was 🔥!!! Could NOT put it down.
alright i'm done: WE NEED A WARDROBE TOUR you can't just keep serving looks and be nonchalant about it!
At first I thought it was a dress and I loved it, but love the look as a one shoulder tank, too.
On a side note... would love to see you react to movie makeover montages. 😘
Reaction to makeover montages is an awesome idea!
ohhh the movie montages idea!
That is a hilarious (and perfect) idea!
Great idea!
This video made me teary eye.
The word legend tends to de used a lot, but this man will forever be a true LEGEND.
I would sincerely love a retrospective look of Grace Coddington. You know so much about fashion and are so generous with your knowledge that it would be epic.
Please excuse my English, is not my first language. ❤❤
I remember watching this documentary:
m.ua-cam.com/video/OyaQk_Iv-Yg/v-deo.html
At 35:15 of the video Karl Lagerfeld says he was sexually assaulted when he was a child.
And he said that when he told his mother, he said his mother blamed Karl for getting molested and said it was his fault.
Karl said his mother wasn't abusive.
But if that's not abusive, I don't know what is.
"and it's meant to look like this" Luke is DEFENSIVE about his shirt!
You’re serving us some Keira Knightly realness and I’m here for it ! ❤️
So basically a book about "When relationships turn messy : The Rich People Edition" lol
yes give me all the gossip. haha
They used each other for their own selfish reasons and now he is mad , for WHATEVER ..... it always ends that way : BETRAYAL
that outfit said PERIODT!!!!!
None of us were ready for this look you’re SERVING!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ DIVINE!
I thought it was a full-on minidress at first
So glad you're talking about this (I mean, tbh, I love everything you talk about) because I plan on buying his book. The excerpts I read about Anna are actually disgusting. The way she treated him...
Just started the vid and seeing that book with all the post-it notes gave me severe high school English class PTSD flash backs...
I still can't believe Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld friendship broke up because they were fighting over a fucking *man*
They were classy guys they should have been more mature than that.
I HIGHLY recommend the book "The beautiful fall", it's a parallel of YSL's and KL's careers at their peak (70s and 80s). The Parisian couture scene was so small to the point of feeling incestuous, the same bunch of sycophants, wannabes and parasites going back and forth between one camp ti the other. Now, Saint-Laurent and Lagerfeld, geniuses of fashion design that they may be, were very complex individuals with profound emotional damage on which many people preyed upon (and many others were also damaged as well). And as always when dealing with larger than life figures, things are not what they seem; after all in the end they're just human.
It's really worth the read, not just because of these two giants, but it's also such a fabulous insight into that particular time in fashion and culture. There was electricity in the air, everything going 1000 miles a minute but still in the spirit of actual fun and creativity and being young and carefree. It's just a great read!
@@SweetJeopardy I've actually heard of that book already because I know Karl Lagerfeld actually sued the author of that book:
www.nytimes.com/2006/12/11/style/11iht-fkarl.3860665.html
I don't really want to read it because I know that Karl did not approve of the book.
I got an ad for Anna Wintour's masterclass before this 😂😂
Fashion Bookclub! BRILLIANT 📚 As a voracious reader, I'm so here for this!! I will be buying this book immediately!! More recommendations please

Ohhh yasss! As a fellow bookworm, this NEEDS to happen...inmediately! I'm HERE for ALL👏🏽of👏🏽 it👏🏽! 📚
Also here are some of my recommendations that not only have great subjects or topics, but also have decent prose and are very well researched:
- "Gods and kings: the rise and fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano" by Dana Thomas
- "The beautiful fall" by Alicia Drake
- "Champagne supernovas: Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen and the '90s renegades who remade fashion" by Maureen Callahan
- "Model: the ugly business of beautiful women" by Michael Gross
- "Queen of fashion: what Marie Antoinette wore to the Revolution" by Caroline Weber
You won't be disappointed trust me
Please do a fashion history of Roy Halston!!! Your history essays are one of my favorite series on your channel and I would love to hear this chapter of fashion history from your perspective. Specifically when his fashion house partnered with JCPenny and whether it is possible for fashion of that caliber to be accessible for mass consumption in today's age. I love your content, please keep doing what you are doing!
I got to see him when he showed The Gospel According to Andre at SCAD. It's one of my few positive memories from that school.
Was dying for a new book, SO excited you shared this one! Just ordered :) he truly sounds like the embodiment of integrity and grace, can't wait to learn more about this man!
your one-shoulder top and silver chain is a mood and I absolutely stan it.
THIS LOOK OH MY GOD
Hmm. It gave me a woody and a smirk (which is typical of when I watch Luke’s vids).
Omg I didn't realize how much tea is in that book, is amazing how informative and detail you do the review, definitely will be reading it.
Well I was lazy and downloaded the audiobook and listened to it all one afternoon. Very well written and narrated . I had seem some news clips about how Andre has slatted Anna Wintour but until a third the way through thought he was very respectful of her and he is obviously looking for her approval . Then it comes to the end and he gets it all of his chest. I thought "shit, she's not going to like that". It was more of a Karl Lagerfeld assassination and that bit was very interesting. You really get a feeling of the racism he has dealt with all his life which makes one think and sympathies with him. I highly recommend this book . Great review
I'm getting this book. Andre is legendary. This one shoulder look though 🔥🔥🔥
I think luke did a great job here, without actually telling us the very specific content of the book , but summarized it section by section and let us know the juicy bits here and there. And it really makes me wanna read it myself!
I did not know this book existed but I am SOLD. I am way too broke to afford true designer fashion, but your channel has inspired me to love it! I appreciate so much more the details and craftsmanship I never saw before
Luke....im living for this one shoulder moment.
Luke, thanks for reporting on André. I appreciate how you are so inclusive of people of color in your videos. Most don't you do and I thank you for that. This inclusion makes your content more interesting, even your defense of models of color don't go unnoticed. Your knowledge of fashion at your age is amazing. I am 55 yrs. old and a student of fashion and art most of my life and your knowledge is impressive to say the least. Brava!
Would pay good money for a Hautelemode book on fashion.
Facts !
+1. Also would pay for a shirt with a picture of him riding a horse 🐴 ✨
I would suggest that he first learn the correct pronunciation of "haute."
I love this channel, mainly because luke is just his authentic self and I live for it 👏✨
This channel is the only thing I care about. Luke never disappoints me, always bringing interesting topics.
I love reading autobiographies. It’s my favorite genre. I can’t wait get this book. But I would also like to see this as a Netflix special someday (Ryan Murphy-style). Visual media immortalizes stories in a very special and memorable way. I think Andre’s story definitely deserves a screen. Thanks for the book review! I love your channel! ❤️✌🏽
I don't feel all that bad for André tbh. Hear me out. I love him. Been a fan for years, but he's always struck me as lazy.
After all those years at Vogue he didn't make any meaningful business connections? Why didn't he start his own fashion line? Why didn't he create his own magazine?
He was to focused on being Anna & Karl's shadow that he forgot to look after his own career. This is the same man who paved the way for editors such as Edward Enninful for Christ sake!
Not to mention André is rumored to be a diva himself (it always bothered me how he called Gabourey Sidibe a "fat black b***h). Tim Gunn spilled the tea a long time ago.
Seems like he didn't have a problem with the wolf pack until they turned on him. This seems like his karma. 🤷🏾♂️
Tea tbh
When you make it to the inside its all cute until you get CUT.
HE WAS A LEECH !!!!! He MILKED that " PERSONA " of his , for years .... a lot of us saw him for what he was : A USER . You guys are so naive. GROW UP . Don't let the fake exterior of people and their " STORIES " catch your imagination . THINK !!!!
Been waiting for this and yesssss WE LOVE ANDRÉ HE IS WONDERFUL even the way he speaks and I'm sure writess
BIG HUGS. love the mindfulness of not disrupting that sense of discovery with reading a book. hope youre keeping safe in these uncertain times!
The post-it notes!😂
Can't wait to read this book! As a black woman growing up always knowing I wanted to be in fashion, Andre Leon Talley was a huge inspiration for me. I loved the documentary as well. He really tells stories in a wonderful way, and really tells what its like to be black in fashion. I just did a video about my experience in fashion on my channel too! Love your videos❤
Can we talk about Naomi Cambell's relationship to the Epstein Child Trafficking Ring....
Omg yes, I'd love a video about it 👀
Naomi , another fake , if there EVER was one.
It’s not a woman’s fault that a serial rapist existed.
@@NoraGermain But they had a close relationship and she has some photos with a victim, Virginia Giuffee, who published months ago in Twitter a message which ended with ''You watched me be abused'' and tagged Naomi Campbell. I can understand you like her marvelous work as model, I appreciate too. But she has some sins and a problematic past and In mi view sometimes people overreact calling her a satanistic Illuminati pedophile, but in this case she isn't sinless.
@@j.jauffret2315 True but let's remember Naomi started modeling at the age of 15 & it's incredibly likely she was also a victim which would not surprise me & if so I could easily understand why she did nothing especially if the girl at the time was not crying out for help. Also put yourself in her position would you run to the rescue of a girl whose age your unsure of & who may or may not be asking for help at that moment? Personally, I don't care either way about Naomi but in this instance I don't think she was obligated to act given what we know & don't know.
I purchased the audiobook when it first release because i couldn’t wait for the physical copy to come in. The audiobook was narrated by him which was awesome. I have now received the physical copy and i am now looking up all the references. I have to say it is one of the best books i have read.
Watching after his passing..Thank you...
You look like a stunning editorial
vogue us is one of the weakest vogues out there. the editorial choices are safe and plain boring most of the times. it's defo not progressive. anna w. seems to be a narcissist and so does andre tbh. grace c. did interesting things. i've been reading fashion magazines for 30 years. i'd say british vogue comes first and vogue italia and vogue paris come second. i also like vogue polska. and vogue portugal seems to be doing very interesting, progressive editorial choices - the fashion is rather meh though.
US Vogue really declined in the late 00s, and it's sort of just been meh since then. The editorials are terrible and it's just generally a boring read. Even more boring to look through. I remember around the time I was just starting to buy it, many people were already discussing it's decline. That was like 2008. And the shift to celebrities and models as influencers, which I guess is Anna trying to keep up with the times, has not helped it at all.
@@hunnyflash Honestly, it started declining in the late '90s when Anna decided to replace supermodels with actresses for the cover.
My God! Bless you! Bless you! Bless you.
You almost make me cry! It is because of you I will buy this book! I don’t know you, but I love you!!!!!!!!
So I just stumbled upon your video and let me tell you, afterwards, I subscribed and you have a new fan for sure! I don’t work in fashion, but I love fashion, and I’ve known about ALT and saw his doc, and I knew this book was coming out but it wasn’t like it was a top-of-the-list, must-read-immediately for me type of book although I did eventually wanna get around to it, but after hearing your not only insightful, thorough, but also compassionate review of it, and the man, I’m wishing I had the book right now to read! He needs to hire you as a publicist lol. And the fact that you didn’t shy away from his blackness, especially at a time like this, and the implications it had on his career, and the implications it can have writ large in fashion AND SOCIETY....well let’s just say it legit really fukkin warmed my heart. Thank you. I look forward to all your future content. ❤️
Yassss Luke 😍 HEY GIRL! You’ve done it AGAIN! Constantly raising the bar for us all and doing it so effortlessly. I would say I’m surprised but I know who you are!
So glad you gave this thorough book review of Mr. Talley. His work is incredible and doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. Thank you for giving him his due in your review. You now have a new subscriber. Btw, love the shirt and shorts combo.
I literally clicked on this when it said 50 seconds ago... honestly Luke the style is cool as it fits you and I thumbs up you fir that but I feel the hair long would do you justice. Like 80s Marc Jacobs
Read my mind
Your knowledge on the wide range of high fashion is amazing for someone your age. Refreshing!
Omg the asymmetry!
Great teaser for the book. Thanks!
You wore that dress! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🖤🖤🖤
I’ve just ordered the book though who knows how long it will take to get to Australia. Would love a video on the Fashion of Meghan Markle, before Harry, while she had the huge budget during her time in the Royal Family, examples of her dressing like Princess Dianna, wigs , etc
I love the tributes here 🙏🏽🥰
I just found your channel and im obsessed ughhh. Like i always wanted to find channels like this but never any good ones it made me almost started a UA-cam channel. Thank the gods I found you

Came for the tea on Anna, stayed for the teasers. Now I gotta buy this book. I’m praying Andre L T does the audiobook cause that voice.... butter baby
OMG All I can say is- Dapper Dan. Coming from a bookseller. It's a GREAT book! :D
not even done watching this video and i've already ordered the book. i watched the gospel according to andre when it came out and i was blown away by all that he did. he is without a doubt one of the most prolific figures in all of fashion history!

Wow I’m about to buy this book. This video came on randomly after a different one and I probably would have never gave this book a second glance. But wow you have really sold it for me!
i love that inclusion and morality for people and the planet has always been part of your brand. what a great time to talk about Talley's book.
Rewatching. RIP.
I’m sold
I love this idea. I sure hope this fashion book club series of yours is popular
me too! but things take time so hopefully it'll grow!!
💯💯I'm enjoying the audible book as well. Hearing ALT (Andre Leon Talley) describe his life and what he has endured to be the bible of Fashion is a journey one must take to understand the truth behind the veil; and I love to hear him speak😎
I’m so glad you didn’t spoil the book but instead gave teasers that make me want to go buy the book 😀
Thank you Luke ....you are the best!!!!!!! .
YOU look great by the way ....
.I have so many boos to catch up on however I WILL get this .... It is great that Andre is telling HIS story because we would probably never know it otherwise
THANK YOU to A.L.T 🖤
Speechless by this outfit
As a consumer and who isn’t into fashion, I cannot unsee Andre Leon Talley outside of being a sassy judge on America’s Next Top Model.
Great idea posting this video in the light of recent events...very fitting and informative on how black lives have touched the face of fashion, like all other facets of our society. I wish Vogue would give HIM a cover. 🙌
U convinced me, I'm buying this book. Also, I want to know what book we're gonna discuss in next months book club, so I can be prepared
I love you, Luke. You are sassy and snarky, and you know your fashion history!
Thank you for this review. I am now going to buy the book. I love, love, love that you noted the importance of Eunice Johnson in your commentary.
