  • André Leon Talley's "The Chiffon Trenches" - bit.ly/2XIlkiu
    André Leon Talley's memoir titled "The Chiffon Trenches" is one of the most insightful books on the style and society of the European fashion industry in the mid to late 20th century. André discusses his time working for some of fashion and art's greats like Andy Warhol, Anna Wintour, Diana Vreeland, John Fairchild, and Grace Mirabella while also showcasing fun anecdotes about designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Azzedine Alaïa, Manolo Blahnik, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and more! But the book also discusses lifelong friendships with two of fashion design's titans Karl Lagerfeld, the deceased former designer of Chanel and Fendi, and Yves Saint Laurent, the deceased heir to the Dior throne and one of the most creative fashion visionaries working in the 1960s and 1970s!

    I’m not a person that gets star struck but If I met this man I’d probably cry. He was the first and for a long time only black man I saw in fashion. I’m definitely a fan. He has lead a life that few are lucky enough to live. He has also fought and endured so much just to get to where he is in life. He truly loves fashion and is a serious fashion historian. LOL 😂 that’s enough of my stanning. Thank you Luke for covering this book.

      mizzmolly yes I have seen The Gospel According to Andrè and really enjoyed it. Edward is amazing. I first saw Edward in the September Issue Doc. It was a scene were Grace was telling him to speak up and fight for his ideas & opinions. Ever since I’ve been following his career. Definitely look forward to his book if and when he writes one.

      I have met him in person, outside of a show during Paris Fashion Week. (i was a student in Paris and no joke, i went to that street just to see the 'exits' of editors from the show lol). He was JUST LIKE how he was in on TV. He was a judge on ANTM at that time. He was a bit sassy but he'd answer you if you asked him a question. I asked for a photo in which he agreed on, and then continue talking in French on the phone and it was apparently his driver on the phone lol. I could never forget that moment.

      I worked backstage at the fenty show in September and saw him sitting quietly watching everything that was going on and wanted to say hi to him SO BADLY but I didn't since you're technically not suppose to speak to celebrities as it is unprofessional while working.. I really regret not going up to him even for just a second :(

    17:00 I love Naomi and this is only referencing her, but implied as a generality... but it kind of kills me when celebrities try and convince you how loving and, down to earth, and generous other celebrities are, because they were kind to them. I mean of course Naomi is going to be kind to Andre, given who they both are. And I don't mean that as shade, I'm just saying... I don't need Madonna to convince me of how friendly Anna Wintour is. But call me when a taxi driver tells you of the kind gesture Anna bestowed upon him, and then my ears will perk up lol. Sorry for that rant. I've just been wanting to say that for years (-;

    I always enjoy this story from Jenna Sauers: “I once sat in a room with André Leon Talley and Peter Brant II while André Leon Talley talked about his many years in fashion. At one point, Talley touched on the reasons why he, growing up gay, black, and poor in pre-Civil Rights-era rural North Carolina, was too fearful to dress with the flamboyance he even then knew he favored.
    Peter Brant II chose this moment to speak up. He said that he totally understood Talley's conundrum, because he, Peter Brant II, had gone to "a really prissy, uptight, all-boys prep school."
    His younger brother Harry interrupted, "At least we had the Brant Auditorium, though."
    Peter Brant II considered for a moment, then nodded and said, "And the Brant Lawn."
    He had to put up with so much bullshit. How Andre didn’t smack them I’ll never know.

    • @i.skyfall
      @i.skyfall 4 роки тому +1

      c jordan I know why you totally missed what she was trying to say. We all have unconscious bias and that plays into how we interpret things (reading comments) so if Bob writes: “My wife missed our 10-year anniversary,” men tend to think Bob is angry, while women are more likely to think Bob is sad. So that’s why this happy woman’s comment is shaming you and why you may feel offended by this. So are we suffocating or are you unaware? The previous question was added to point out unconscious bias, it’s the only thing in the comment intended to make you feel bad. If feeling bad occurred before that welcome to how we interpret emotions in text.

    Such a classy, well put together review!
    1.) You revealed just enough details to provide interest I buying the book without telling everything.
    2.) You mentioned Eunice Johnson!!!
    A true black icon in fashion that’s rarely mentioned. This woman was at one of the first black people in fashion at the couture shows in Paris.
    She spearheaded influencing designers to feature black models in the industry.
    She was the FIRST to create makeup and cosmetics for black women.
    The fact that you highlighted her not only makes me want to buy the book ( my order is scheduled for delivery on Saturday), I’ll even be watching more of your videos.
    You’re just awesome!!!
    Can’t wait to see you on the front rows at the shows one day!!!

    I remember watching this documentary:
    m.ua-cam.com/video/OyaQk_Iv-Yg/v-deo.html
    At 35:15 of the video Karl Lagerfeld says he was sexually assaulted when he was a child.
    And he said that when he told his mother, he said his mother blamed Karl for getting molested and said it was his fault.
    Karl said his mother wasn't abusive.
    But if that's not abusive, I don't know what is.

      I HIGHLY recommend the book "The beautiful fall", it's a parallel of YSL's and KL's careers at their peak (70s and 80s). The Parisian couture scene was so small to the point of feeling incestuous, the same bunch of sycophants, wannabes and parasites going back and forth between one camp ti the other. Now, Saint-Laurent and Lagerfeld, geniuses of fashion design that they may be, were very complex individuals with profound emotional damage on which many people preyed upon (and many others were also damaged as well). And as always when dealing with larger than life figures, things are not what they seem; after all in the end they're just human.
      It's really worth the read, not just because of these two giants, but it's also such a fabulous insight into that particular time in fashion and culture. There was electricity in the air, everything going 1000 miles a minute but still in the spirit of actual fun and creativity and being young and carefree. It's just a great read!

    Well I was lazy and downloaded the audiobook and listened to it all one afternoon. Very well written and narrated . I had seem some news clips about how Andre has slatted Anna Wintour but until a third the way through thought he was very respectful of her and he is obviously looking for her approval . Then it comes to the end and he gets it all of his chest. I thought "shit, she's not going to like that". It was more of a Karl Lagerfeld assassination and that bit was very interesting. You really get a feeling of the racism he has dealt with all his life which makes one think and sympathies with him. I highly recommend this book . Great review

    I don't feel all that bad for André tbh. Hear me out. I love him. Been a fan for years, but he's always struck me as lazy.
    After all those years at Vogue he didn't make any meaningful business connections? Why didn't he start his own fashion line? Why didn't he create his own magazine?
    He was to focused on being Anna & Karl's shadow that he forgot to look after his own career. This is the same man who paved the way for editors such as Edward Enninful for Christ sake!
    Not to mention André is rumored to be a diva himself (it always bothered me how he called Gabourey Sidibe a "fat black b***h). Tim Gunn spilled the tea a long time ago.
    Seems like he didn't have a problem with the wolf pack until they turned on him. This seems like his karma. 🤷🏾‍♂️

      @@NoraGermain But they had a close relationship and she has some photos with a victim, Virginia Giuffee, who published months ago in Twitter a message which ended with ''You watched me be abused'' and tagged Naomi Campbell. I can understand you like her marvelous work as model, I appreciate too. But she has some sins and a problematic past and In mi view sometimes people overreact calling her a satanistic Illuminati pedophile, but in this case she isn't sinless.

      @@j.jauffret2315 True but let's remember Naomi started modeling at the age of 15 & it's incredibly likely she was also a victim which would not surprise me & if so I could easily understand why she did nothing especially if the girl at the time was not crying out for help. Also put yourself in her position would you run to the rescue of a girl whose age your unsure of & who may or may not be asking for help at that moment? Personally, I don't care either way about Naomi but in this instance I don't think she was obligated to act given what we know & don't know.

    I purchased the audiobook when it first release because i couldn’t wait for the physical copy to come in. The audiobook was narrated by him which was awesome. I have now received the physical copy and i am now looking up all the references. I have to say it is one of the best books i have read.

    vogue us is one of the weakest vogues out there. the editorial choices are safe and plain boring most of the times. it's defo not progressive. anna w. seems to be a narcissist and so does andre tbh. grace c. did interesting things. i've been reading fashion magazines for 30 years. i'd say british vogue comes first and vogue italia and vogue paris come second. i also like vogue polska. and vogue portugal seems to be doing very interesting, progressive editorial choices - the fashion is rather meh though.

    • @hunnyflash
      @hunnyflash 4 роки тому +18

      US Vogue really declined in the late 00s, and it's sort of just been meh since then. The editorials are terrible and it's just generally a boring read. Even more boring to look through. I remember around the time I was just starting to buy it, many people were already discussing it's decline. That was like 2008. And the shift to celebrities and models as influencers, which I guess is Anna trying to keep up with the times, has not helped it at all.

    So I just stumbled upon your video and let me tell you, afterwards, I subscribed and you have a new fan for sure! I don’t work in fashion, but I love fashion, and I’ve known about ALT and saw his doc, and I knew this book was coming out but it wasn’t like it was a top-of-the-list, must-read-immediately for me type of book although I did eventually wanna get around to it, but after hearing your not only insightful, thorough, but also compassionate review of it, and the man, I’m wishing I had the book right now to read! He needs to hire you as a publicist lol. And the fact that you didn’t shy away from his blackness, especially at a time like this, and the implications it had on his career, and the implications it can have writ large in fashion AND SOCIETY....well let’s just say it legit really fukkin warmed my heart. Thank you. I look forward to all your future content. ❤️
