  • "In Intimate Detail" by Cora Harrington: www.thelingerieaddict.com/in-...
Cora Harrington's "In Intimate Detail" is an easy to read guide to Lingerie, how to buy it, and how to store it. The book covers topics like Bras, Underwear, Shapewear, Hosiery, & Loungewear in a way that explains each topic's history, what body types and shapes they will benefit, beautiful illustrations to train the eye for garment identification, and tips and tricks along the way. I initially picked up the book because I was looking for a guide to Lingerie to help me with my Victoria Secret Fashion Show videos, but the book is so much more than just a guide to garments, it truly feels like a book that actually walks the reader through how to identify different aspects of their body and what Lingerie might work well for them. It talks about fibers and fabrics and how putting certain things on your body can affect it. There are guides to storage as well as care, which is important for those looking to take care of their lingerie, in order to have it last longer. There are even tips for how to purchase, custom, new, and vintage lingerie, as well as guides on how to shop in person for it, as well as online! I couldn't even cover all the topics Cora Harrington discusses, which is why I think the book is a must-have for those that love fashion as well as those that have never been truly taught what is the right way to wear and buy Lingerie!

This made me smile. He is so exited and intrigued by something he has no need of knowing or understanding. A lot of the things he spoke about, are things most women either learn by trial and error or by word of mouth. As someone who grew-up awkward, and only wearing boys clothes with neglectful parents, I had to figure all this out on my own. The awkward nerd that I was and to be frank still am, would have been relieved to know there was a book that explained it all. Instead I felt like an alien with people staring at me, while quickly trying to choose something from rackfuls of brightly coloured lacy things that I had no idea how to wear or how they were even supposed to fit.

tbh as a bigger chested girl, finding the right bra for me was life changing and i hope we keep talking about it! anyone who wears a bra should get mesured and find the right bra. i kept wearing small bras and i was surprised it didn't fit right and turns out the sizes don't stop at a d cup! it can be harder to find bigger bras but it's so worth it. i didn't know about this book, but i'll look into it, it seems really interesting

I agree soo much! I think there's such a strong perception that a D or DD cup is huge, and anything above that is ginormous, and it's really not necessarily the case. It also makes it worse how many lingerie stores will basically lie about what size they're measuring you as in order to get you to buy their products, or just not be properly trained in measuring to begin with - I was once measured in a La Sanza and the sales lady told me I was a 36C, despite the fact I was already wearing a La Senza bra in 32DDD. And when I finally got measured at a store with extended sizes and proper measuring methods, it turns out I'm actually a 30I or 30J. You could've knocked me over with a feather, I was so surprised!

    • @boogiemonstermom677

It's especially important for big breasted women to have the right bra because of all the back pain/complications that can arise from not having enough support. These complications can be even worse when the woman is quite active. The bigger the breast, the more weight your back has to support, and the more active you are, the more extreme/forceful the "pulling" motion of the breast are going to be when, they move, be it up and down, or side to side etc. Definitely a good idea to try and find one that is designed for the activity your currently doing, while giving the right fit, support, and security.

Yes! I recently found a place in my lovely southamerican corner that makes tailored bras with the specifications you give.
The only problem is getting an appointment because they can't take a lot of clients per week, so we have to plan to make sure it will be done on time.

Totally agree. I really enjoy that lately, really pretty and lightweight bras are getting made in my size too (36HH/34J). I love Ewa Michalak. Like, there are some people who think a DD is big. LOL. Then again, most women who wear a "DD" cup should be at least a G if they were sized correctly. To be honest, back when I was a G I thought mine aren't big enough. Well, nature obviously wanted to teach me a lesson and the last cup size I'm actually starting to notice my back/neck hurts sometimes even though I wear the right bra, and I can only stand with good posture when I push them into my chest. Bummer. I need more yoga. They never really stopped growing even though I'm in my thirties, it's sort of weird.

Sounds like a great book! Since I'm a fiber nerd, I do want to mention that viscose actually isn't plastic! It's cellulose that's processed from wood/bamboo. It's more comfortable and breathable than polyester, but the manufacture process can still harm the environment because they use very harsh chemicals.

    • @teodora9280
      @teodora9280 3 роки тому +8

I agree, it's not the most sustainable production but once it's out there and in second hand shops, it's a great option. It's always refreshing to find viscose blouses when so many are unblatantly polyester. And I hate how so many linings on coats (even of those that are otherwise 100% wool) are polyster, so viscose is a great choice for that if I can find it.

I’m actually pretty clueless about undergarments. I wear a basic bra and underwear every day. I know there are things like slips, stockings, tights, nylons, garters, shapewear, and more, but i don’t know when and where they should be worn or in what order. I feel like I stay away from certain clothes because I don’t know what to wear under them. I’ll have to look into getting this book!

    • @jjsegal1915
      @jjsegal1915 3 роки тому +1

I haven't gotten my hands on the book yet but speaking as a reader of Cora's blog and casual/intermediate lingerie enthusiast, I'd say you shouldn't feel you have to wear undergarments only in certain times or ways! If you're coming from a place of wearing basics every day you don't need to jump into shapewear or stockings or other pieces that might be more intimidating. I personally don't really like getting dressed up in that way either, but nice loungewear (like a robe, slinky pants or shorts, or a crisp slip) can be less fussy, and double for wearing outside when layered thoughtfully. Or just doing chores and flouncing around the house in a matching bra and undies really hits the spot some days! It's all about what you feel comfortable in.

I think there’s a huge lack of knowledge among women and bra-wearers in general about bras. A lot of women think the cup range is just A - DD and have no understanding of how shape effects the bras you should get. ngl, I blame Victoria’s Secret and Ed Razek. Like you said, it’s hard to think of another somewhat affordable, mainstream lingerie specialty store besides Victoria’s Secret. Once you start to get titties, it’s really your only option besides like Target or Macy’s, which often have even worse selections and no one to help with a fitting.
So they obviously have a massive and massively diverse consumer base. Yet Razek decided to market it, on the one hand, like high fashion, which unfortunately includes having almost exclusively size 00 models. Consequently, a lot of their bras are just designed with skinny women in mind. On the other hand, all of his marketing campaigns and strategies are extremely straight male gaze-centric, right down to the Michael Bay-directed ads. And that actually results in some of the models, even in ads and on the runway, wearing ill-fitting bras because they push the women’s boobs together more (seriously pay attention to the gore in those ads and you’ll see how it’s almost *never* touching the model’s sternum because too-small cups = sexy spillage)
So basically every awkward adolescent who grows out of training bras and sports bras immediately looks to Victoria’s Secret, where they’re told that they need to be skinny and that women’s underwear is for being sexy to men. Then you get there, and the size ranges from A to DDD and like *maybe* a 40 band but I usually only see it go up to 38. Then you have almost every bra designed with the purpose of creating cleavage, which just usually isn’t a priority when you got them big ol’ tiddies. The designs almost all favor one standard breast shape.
And don’t even get me started on the utterly over-sexed Pink line targeted toward teens. I was literally 14 with underwear that said “light my fire” all over them and a thong with a picture of a cupcake on the vagina that said “eat me”.
And then there’s Ed’s transphobia and the fact that Jeffrey Epstein used his friendship with Leslie Wexner to pretend he was a VS modeling scout so he could get young girls to model for him. And Wexner knew about it and did absolutely nothing. Plus VS is basically fast fashion posing as high fashion and it’s totally unethical and unsustainable.
So basically, fuck VS and L Brands in general. I kind of wish we could have a Dolce and Gabbana thing with them, but I understand they have a wider reach so that’s harder to do. I think we just need to find/popularize other affordable lingerie stores that don’t suck so they can replace VS.
Sorry for the goddamn essay, lol. I just had to rant about that bitch Ed Razek and the overall shitty effect VS has on the world.

I shall say that women with *very* petite chests have trouble finding bras. I have only heard of one company specialising in petite bras and that company is in America. I'm from the other side of the globe, fam. I don't think we even have a store here that specialises in petite breats.
My aunt decided to get her bras from Switzerland (she had one of her kids there and has lived there on/off for more than two decades) because at the time she had large breasts and the bras here were too expemsive or didn't have sizes. In the end she went to get her breast size reduced from the medical proplems worsened by the large size. She still gets her bras from Switzerland to this day.
And VS having "smaller" sizes is not the best thing ever, but it isn't the worst IMO. If you want to have "real size" models (not obese, over weight or unhealthily skinny) then you need to do something about it. We can have have a tiny grasp in getting healthy sized women modeling the underwear, but I am pretty sure the change wont be happening with a finger snap.

I would probably be an A cup seeing that my breasts are quite small. However, my band size makes me a B. One time I was shopping for a bra with my aunt, I asked for a 32 B and the saleslady said I should get an A. My aunt being a "trust them because they know" person pressured me to get a 30 B bra because I would ~probably~ regret getting a bra in the size I wanted. Surprise surprise! The band was too tight despite the stretch. It's still in my wardrobe but I only wear it for days when I only need a bra for a short period of time.

i love how he was like "i always thought that victoria's secret is so expensive, but I learned that bras are incredibly difficult garments to make." um luke, no offense, but you've clearly never actually worn a bra from victoria's secret, because bras ARE incredibly difficult to make if you want to make them correctly and take into account the variety in the bodies of bra wearers, their preferences, and their needs (eg. comfort, cleavage, support, subtlety, sexiness, durability, quality, affordability, etc.). but VS, well um, doesn't care about any of that? VS is a mass-market, large-scale production company, where quality can be compromised to a certain point, and is encouraged to BE compromised for profit. they entertain and employ big, sometimes unsafe factories which take advantage of poor workers. have you ever heard a person of any shape or size say "wow, VS makes amazing bras" or "wow, VS has great quality" or "wow, VS really takes my needs as a customer into account?" I sure as fuck haven't.

I paid like $54 for a VS bra a week ago.
The ring on the straps are cheap plastic, not metal. Very disappointed. It makes this “eeek ehhh errr” sound when I move 😬
This is also my first time buying a brand bra. It makes me feel embarrassed to go in as I know they probably don’t have my A-cup size

@@lc7592 Omg mine makes that squeaky sound. They're absolute garbage tbh. In the UK we have Boux Avenue and i definitely prefer them, the staff are way more helpful compared to VS as well.

This is what happens when people fixate on bra advice from men that don’t wear bras tbh, this video popped up in my recs for some reason and I was vaguely annoyed because I’m sorry but if you don’t have boobs you’re never gonna fully be an expert on bras

Hi Luke! I just felt the need to write this comment.
I'm a fashion design student and sometimes I forget how much I just love fashion.
Your videos remind me of that. I love the way you explain things, I admire how much you know about fashion and how you shout out other people that knows the things you may be lacking.
Honestly I want to thank you for your content and for inspiring me and reminding me why I love fashion and it's history so much.
    Lots of love from Argentina!

Lucas, the title got me ready to start, BUT this video is glorious. I mean, lord, does the passion for garments ever end??? The in and outs of bra sizing is barely understood by the men, women, and the in-betweens who desire to wear them. as a fashion professional, your interest in learning and discussing these types of undergarments is EVERYTHING. p.s. "boob style" is a great way to describe it.

Thanks so much for this I can't watch the entire video right now; however, Cora is a fantastic resource. When she first started her blog she focused on stockings and vintage inspired undergarments. Furthermore I LOVE that her website actually has renowned corsetiers review corsets and explain corset making. If you feel comfortable doing it, please take the time to interview Bianca from The Closet Historian she can really give you excellent details about vintage lingerie and fashion, especially because she is a historian and a seamstress.
