How Versace Created The Supermodels (Versace Fall 1991 Fashion Analysis)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 гру 2019
- Gianni Versace was one of fashions greatest masterminds, and his knowledge of not only design but also culture, propelled him and his brand to a status many would only describe as legendary. But then add on top of that the fact that he helped cement the "Supermodel" in pop culture, along with the actual supermodels themselves, including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford, this Versace show was one of the most important!

i like how the old super models were older and look more mature and confident
Yes they were grown women not teenage girls
The super models were in their early 20s at the time of this Versace show. But they do look more mature, and happy. They were allowed to show personality.
Greg T true, plus models were allowed to be a bit more curvy and healthy back then and ofc the hair and makeup made them look more “alive” too, now designers want models to look lifeless so people would put more focus on the clothes but imo it just makes the shows more boring and less eye-catching
There is a great copy on YT of the supermodel documentary featuring Christy Turlington. Very interesting.
The "old supermodels" were the first. The Versace era/Freedom 90 era was the ending to their career. These ladies started when they were like 16, 17
Finally Luke talking about the influence of Versace on fashion history I’m so happy
Vale😍

OMG ME TOO LOL
He really was genius. Many of these pieces are still worn today. And those sexy boot are so gorgeous!
you're so right! who knew the boots would be so timeless!
HauteLeMode I love your channel honey. Since you have such a huge influence I hope you don’t mind my political comment. I can’t take 4 more years of Trump and this Republican Administration. ❤️
I can't believe that something most of my generation called "hooker boots" are a classic now. It's fantastic that more & more ppl are not going w/societal "norms" regarding clothes & fashion.
And I absolutely agree that he was genius. I feel honored to have witnessed an artist of his caliber in my lifetime. And lucky enough to have just a few pieces from this era of Versace.
When I was younger it was the supers, especially Naomi who made me not only comfortable but beautiful in being a 6ft tall women of colour, love them always.
girl I hope you're modelling!!!
What about Tyra Banks
@GAgaV8 thats kind of...sad
GAgaV8 you’re beautiful no matter what
As another 6ft tall gal I know how you feel, seeing women like Naomi own their height helped me so much during my teenage years.
Watch how the models used to walk back then. They were smiling and having fun on the runway, compared to now, most models are Blank.
Exactly! I miss that.
I mean they have to be for the designers. lmao its not their fault
And that is not the fault of the models but designers hate when people bash on contemporary models as if they aren’t twice as starved and underpaid compared to the 90s since Instagram and celeb models have made modeling as a career obsolete unless u are already a celebrity
They have curves too! Amazing.
Honestly the whole collection makes me want to jump into the 90’s wear every single piece and be beautiful and ruthless and stuck up, all at once lol
Don' t forget dangerous!
Linda, Christy, Cindy, Claudi, Naomi, Carla, Yasmeen, Helena, Stehpanie, Karen, Tatjana, Kate, Niki, Brandi, Veronica, Elaine, Shalom, Amber, Megan & Najda every show these were the top models.
You forgot Karen Mulder
No- Karen was name checked! The originals-I LIVED for these girls!
@@happylindsay4475 I love them all so much. 😍
after Stephanie on the list 😊
Right! And we took it for granted. Today, if just TWO of those names close a show-which they did not even walk in-with the designer (I’m thinking Kate and Naomi with Kim Jones, in this case), it’s pretty awesome. If we get a moment like that reunion at the end of the Versace show for Gianni, we break the internet. This thanks to what we’ve had to learn to deal with...
This was an era I wish I could relive. I was a teen in the 90s, yes I'm older than dirt. But the fashion felt almost magical then. The super models were everywhere & you couldn't get enough of their walk & what show they'd be in next.
They honestly helped bring the clothes to life.
This is when I fell in love w/fashion & Gianni Versace💙
Coudge b and then George Michael released “I Want Your Sex” with it’s iconic videoclip and the world was a beautiful, exciting perfect place for 6 ½ minutes.. glorious. Glorious and gone.. 💜
I'm also in love with Gianni Versace.
He's my favorite fashion designer. 😘
Coudge b YAAAAASSS!!!!!!!!
Same to all of the above !❤️❤️❤️
I'm right there with you as well.
I can’t believe he didn’t even say Yasmeen Ghauri
Well Ghauri has made the choice to stay away from the public, and she only was part of the industry for only a limited time. Yes she did contribute but the girls in the video were the main Versace girls, who continued in the industry. It may just be out of respect for her privacy. Also not a lot of people know of Ghauri because of her short fame. It’s really sad because she was so beautiful and her walk was unreal.
Ghauri gave us the walk of life😍 5:57 13:11 19:38 24:47
24:47
Her WALK... Pure perfection
24:47 but i got your point she was a supermodel too
Thank you for finally doing your research on the brand. I've been studying Versace history for the last 2 years, and it really upsets me every time you call the brand "tacky" in a negative way. It is MEANT to be tacky. Gianni wanted to redefine fashion and glamour. He doesn't believe in being boring. Fashion to him was supposed to be exciting, happy, unpretentious, so he incorporated all aspects of his life into his designs explicitly. Gianni Versace really changed fashion.
A lot of "fashion experts" sometimes confuse tacky with sexy tbh. Lol they need to understand that not everybody wants to look like a weird bored-depressed androgynous
Yes but there are principles of design, something that the human eye is drawn to such as rules of third, leading lines, use of space etc. You can redefine fashion, but you can’t control or change the public’s taste that easily.
.... millenials 😤😤
lol tacky is tacky there’s nothing in between it. im sure he knows that unusual and over the top creations don’t equate tacky. if he says its tacky, then its tacky.

18:14 that's Marlon Brando not James Dean
On another note I loved those crystalized tops and jackets and the wool suits. I had no idea Versace had this much range.
He could do alot of different types of fashion that's why he had so many different fashion lines.

i did my thesis about gianni as a modern dionysus connecting his life to the myth about medusa and incorporating it in the versace's logo. I got the best note :)
My knowledge on mythology isn't that great so can you explain how all of that connects to Versace 😂
I would love to read that!
That sounds super interesting...maybe you should do a video about it...even if it could be reading video if you don't wanna show your face!😉

It's amazing how ALL of the outfits in this show look stunning, thought through, complete and most of all still wearable. In comparison to that, the runway looks of today look mismatched and illfitted most of the time.
That random Casey Anthony shade made me bark out the ugliest laugh I have ever made.
RIP to the great mind Gianni Versace, a designer truly ahead of his time.
2:02 I'm scared by Donatella looking so much like Gaga there.
it’s kind of creepy isn’t it????
You mean Gaga looking like Donatella. The order is important, Donatella inspired and inspires Gaga and others.
They’re v similar looking and they’re both Italian
Lady Gaga was actually supposed to play Donatella in the Versace tv show.
It would have been perfect casting.
@@Firespawnable I don't think she would have done the accent properly. Penelope was spot on!
"Now we're pro sex worker, so if you're not, then unsubscribe." I love you Luke.😂
I loved Versace so much and actually visited the Paris atelier in 1991. I floated in there moon eyed, wondrous and unlike any of the other houses i visited the staff were polite and spoke to me. They offered me the both the men's and women's catalogs of that collection and i still cherish them. Hands down my favorite collection ever. My mom took a photo of me after walking out for because i cried - with joy. When Gianni was murdered i was at work and this Indiana girl sobbed. My coworkers were not sure what to do but allowed this art girl super fan to have some peace and grieve.
Thank you for this video. I embodies a love for wanting to be one of the girls on that runway, my love for Gianni and my favorite memory of my first and only trip to Paris. 💟
These models WALKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The girls today could never
the way every single look is still wearable today. not a single misstep. serve after serve. we must stan.
I love these look back history lessons. You bring me back to the 90's when I bought all the fashion magazines every month.Your videos could be a documentary series for anyone, from those studying fashion to those just like to look.
It was all about the magazines. Also, 'Behind the Velvet Ropes' on TV!
18:03 - babe that’s not James, that’s Marlon Brando 😱❤️ love your work btw
Yep those were the best of times. I worked in the Financial sector so in day time I did the black elegant suits, but when Friday happened it was, more is more. I remember a John Richmond leather Jacket with “destroy”emblazoned across each sleeve. George Michael was best buddies with Lisa Stansfield, who had a classic hit “All around the world”. There were only two Destroy jackets, she had the other and auctioned it for charity. I spent the next decade explaining that I had not won it (ironically I met both George and Lisa at the opening of the Versace Storein London” both gorgeous people. I did express my distress over the Destroy jacket. She grinned and apologised. Anarchy and over the top was what Versace gave us. For me Evangelista was the greatest of them all. I too loved to change it up often with red, white blue, and blonde hair. My father survived me but only just. I kept all those pieces and the finally they went to my daughter, who like her mother loved over the top. She looked fantastic. Better than I ever did. But I am biased. It’s allowed. I am mature now but my natural long wavy black hair has blonde and ash brown highlights thro it and I still pull out the over the knee boots now and then. Never stop loving fashion it is where you find your soul. X
Loved your story. Thanks for sharing. Linda was my favorite as well until Kate came along.
Amazing memories and thank you for sharing!!❤️💚❤️💚
Ok someone needs to make a movie about the supermodels of the 90s! I would love to play Naomi...if I was 5”10 😭
There's a documentary with all the 90s supermodels just go on UA-cam and type in Catwalk Documentary.
All the 90s designers and Versace is also in it too. 👍
1995 Thierry Mugler fashion show! Also, shot out to jasmine Ghauri. She ate all the other girls up on the runway minus ms Naomi. Too bad she suddenly gave up on her career
I’m a very simple person, when someone starts talking about baroque/rococo, I pay attention.
Luke, thank you for making this video. Gianni Versace is my favorite fashion designer. His designs were so creative, bold, glamourous, and sexy.
His diversity, his positivity, his love for women, and his passion for fashion is so inspiring.
He really was ahead of his time.
😍😍😍😍😍
1:55 "Gianni Versace grrrrrew up" lmao I LIVE for that accent
"you'll realize that Gianni does not give a singular.... fedoodle."
Okay...I am aging myself here but I have to say that Versace inspired my whole wardrobe during my high school and college years. Imagine me stomping the floors of the hallways in my thigh high boots and gold gangling belts with dripping coins and gems letting everybody know I was coming. I loved this video and your channel is my "go to" these days. Keep it up!! By the way...Tatina was in Freedom. I only know this because my friends and I used to re-enact this video every time MTV played it. We were "obsessed", to say the least. lol
I'm so glad to hear this. I was bummed to hear they left her out. It's like WHY????
8:05 can we talk about this Naomi look? Todays models could never!
Sofia c you speak the truth. Now their runway walk are just not it. Yasmeen ghauri walk is also so good you should check her out
"The guitar that looks like a strap"
Umm, thats a violin, but ok
actually i feel that it's a cello cus there's no chin rest
i feel like he intended for it to be a violin but there’s no chin rest... but also no way he made that mistake? so maybe a cello?
@@aleeeeeeexoxo yeh i get what you mean, in imagery like that a lot you see violins a lot more than cellos so it is definitely strange. Although the placing of it is almost kind of how you hold a cello so perhaps?
@@vilutti ooh that's possible - man you learn something new every day :) Old instruments are fascinating huh.
chin rests are usually separate from the violin, and you have buy one for your violin. at least that was the case when i was having lessons. they probably just didn’t get a chin rest for whatever reason idk
The art history ho in me is always ready for a HauteleMode fashion history video
this video truly showed me that we’re starved with actual creativity nowadays
Christy, Linda and Naomi will always be supermodels, unlike the modern breed which are just tall skinny rich girls with a bunch of insta followers
@Lenny P yasmeen ghauri too was apart of the super models she just didn't want as much publicity as the other super models
& fillers.
Luke, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Thierry Mugler's legendary 1995 A/W Cirque d'Hiver collection.
A couple of things you got wrong: You mixed up Cindy and Claudia with looks 3 and 4. Christy's first look was a princess or "fit and flare" dress, not a babydoll (the babydoll is the one that has the empire waist and full frilly skirt that makes anybody with a bust look pregnant. The dresses worn during that lip synching bit were babydolls). You actually correctly identified the same shape in the ready to wear portion. And the guy in the Wild One was Marlon Brando, not James Dean. But I'm being nitpicky. This was a real trip down memory lane for me. I was probably about your age when this collection came out. I'd forgotten how much I loved it. I always thought Versace took what Christian Lacroix started in the 80s and made it more accessible with the deliberate use of overtly sexy elements. Lacroix's excess skewed old compared to Versace's.
You are right!!
Pauline Triage, spot on!!! 😉
Very proud that my first designer bag is Versace ❤️
This is the content I subscribed for, knowledgeable and fun. The best fashion youtuber.
girl that isn’t james dean, that’s marlon brando

4:33 thats Cindy Crawford not Claudia Schiffer
He swapped their names. Claudia came next.
I know, he got a few names wrong in this
Im so glad you found the light of Versace!!!
These are like video essays and they're amazing. Making connections to Japanese designers, talking about older women. Amazing.
FYI, that was Marlon Brando, not James Dean. Tatiana was also in Freedom 90 video. I remember this collection and wished I could have affforded the crystal jackets.
I would like you to do a comparison of the Versace Supermodels, The Victoria Secrets Angels and the current wave of new models (Gigi, Bella, Kendall, Cara Delevingne etc.)
It's be interesting to see how models have become more mainstream nowadays
Cindy was the most money making Supermodel and voted the most favorite Supermodel of the 90s. Gianni Versace was a fashion genius . He was the best in his Prime
Tatjana Patitz was also featured in the "Freedom 90" music video. She has curly blonde hair in the video.
Tatjana Patitz was also originally supposed to walk the runway with the other 4 girls but she couldn't make it.
Gianni probably was pissed about that since he wanted all the models from the video.
So it's funny that what is now seen as an iconic moment is actually not 100% perfect in his eyes.
@@Firespawnable Wow I had no idea. Thanks for the info!
