Denzel’s little mannerisms get way more sinister when you watch the movie the 2nd time. He’s not laughing at Jake because of his virgin lungs, he’s laughing at how nicely his plans coming together
I honestly would've been nervous being in Jake's shoes this whole movie. He never knew that he was dealing with a corrupted cop the majority of the movie and seeing all the shit Denzel put him through makes it even more intense and somewhat frightening. I couldn't imagine being in any of the situations he was in.
well for one thing is clear after that day jake becomes very jaded with the lapd and any ideals or being righteous goes right out the window. he becomes a hardened cop.
I’m surprised they haven’t done training day 2 where hoyt basically becomes the new Alonso. Maybe he moves into the hood and starts banging Eva Mendes.
If these are in fact not plot holes then Jake is freaking stupid. Who the hell would want to be in some guys squad after said squad leader presses a gun against his head. This ain’t the Mafia it’s a freaking police department lol. Being a trainee in narcotics is not synonymous with CIA deep cover either. So yeah Jake leave the car and go back to patrol. You’ll make the same salary and not have your head blown off by your partner lol.

He did this to make sure he had drugs in his blood as a means to get him to do whatever he wants or he would make sure his blood gets to the lab. It's about control. He doesn't care about teaching him anything. Denzel's character is not genuine. Remember the scene where Denzel kills Roger? He told Hoyt he's been planning everything all week. He said he's playing chess, not checkers. Literally everything Denzel does is says is only a game and a means to an end to manipulate and get what he wants. Don't do this and you will die on the streets as a undercover, so do it now and let me watch so I know that task is complete for what comes later if we need a fall man.
Jake could have left at anytime. Even through the hardest times. Alonzo gave Jake an out multiple times. Jake ultimately chose to stick it out even after Alonzo murdered Roger. Jake had the magic eye and is a wolf. He could had of arrested Alonzo at the end and exposed the corrupt LAPD. He decided to jack him to prove he is the Alpha dog and won’t be played with. Hence the respect he gets from all the homies.
Alonzo, in his own twisted way, developed a soft spot for Jake and wanted him in his unit. When Jake refused to kill Roger nor would he take the money, Alonzo realized he was incorruptible and a liability and made up his decision to kill him. But then Jake was able to take Alonzo’s gun and it was too late to kill him then and there without raising too many questions, hence we find out later he paid the Hispanic gang to kill him.

When he told Hoyt that he would be dead in the street if he refused, that should have been the end of the day for him even if Hoyt asked to smoke it after. What would be the point of giving him the weed if it was not for his own plan ?
Also he doesn't really give him a reason first. He offers it, then gets angry like this was suddenly some kind of undercover roleplay which Jake failed, which he gave no indication of. But the whole point was to fail him to guilt him into "accepting" what's happening, people ride along with things a longer if they feel they've "chosen" to rather than forced, no matter how much they were manipulated.
