Its an excellent bit of acting from Denzel. You can see the wind go out of his sails as soon as he realises he is facing a truely rightous man. He knew eventually the party would come to an end and if he was brought down because of greed or curruption or racism, all those justifications he's told himself over the years for why he was still a good person, despite everything he'd done become true. But when he's face with a man who can't be bribed or threatened, who understands how broken the system is and still refuses to compromise... it's not the system he's fighting anymore, its justice.

That being said I feel like he's a realistic representation of what a hero would be like in the real world; a regular person who has issues like everyone else.
Denzel played the "desperate gangster feigning control" in this scene. He talks like he's walking out of there but he knows how fucked he really is and is trying to hide his fear through manipulation and intimidation.
@@contraband1543 I think he looks relieved at the end not desperate. Frank knows his occupation (ganglord) ends with either a bullet or a 30+ year prison term. 2:29 "I got the Mazzano crime family (willing to testify against you)". WHAT ? No Mafia member in good standing would ever - EVER - help cops take down a rival criminal. Let alone testify in court. They wouldn't even GO to court, unless they're supporting another Mafia guy, who is on trial. Ten mob guys attending a court room trial ? And being willing to testify ? Imagine how self incriminating that would be. "Yeah, I hate that Lucas guy, he was dealing heroin ! My crime family only deals in gambling, loan sharking, hijacking and murder!"
If you're a made guy, if you're connected, if you're an associate. Even if you're the lowest level street thug, and you say, "Hey, let's testify against one of our enemies - let's help the cops bring a heroin dealer down", you'll be killed. You'll be marked as a rat. You're dead. The concept of a Mafia crime family helping the cops take down a rival, is incredibly ridiculous. Come on. I know people love this movie, but that's as unrealistic as it gets. Whoever wrote the script for this film, knows nothing about how mob guys operate. A Mafia member will only testify if he's indicted, or facing charges, and wants to save his own skin.

I've never seen Denzel in a bad guy role. He's so likeable, even as a bad guy. Soon as he breaks out that smile ... like the sun comes through. Two great actors in a face off. Denzel pulls it off effortlessly. Very unpredictable. The hallmark of a great actor. Russell plays an incorruptible man, a rare breed. In the end, his character soars miles above the gangster's. This...is what today's movies so severely lack. Hard, good dialogue...paired with gritty, honest, believable acting.
The thing I love about Richie is that he's not the typical hero. He doesn't have any superpowers, he's not some sort of badass, he's not really anyone special, and he's not even a good person, he might be doing good in taking down Frank but his life is falling apart and this bust is all he really has left. That being said I feel like he's a realistic representation of what a hero would be like in the real world; a regular person who has issues like everyone else.
When I say not the typical hero I mean what we've become accustomed to in movies: (heroes like Superman for example)
Denzel played the "desperate gangster feigning control" in this scene.
He talks like he's walking out of there but he knows how fucked he really is and is trying to hide his fear through manipulation and intimidation.
The whole time frank is desperately trying any angle he can to get out of it and the more scared he becomes the more he masks it with anger.
@@contraband1543 I think he looks relieved at the end not desperate. Frank knows his occupation (ganglord) ends with either a bullet or a 30+ year prison term. As soon as he figures out Crowe's priority is to sweep up dirty cops and not put Frank away forever he knows he will be free in a (relatively) short time. In the movie it was 5 years, which is hell of a lot shorter than the 70 year sentence he was staring down.
Well said my dude.
On point.
Lol
Richie had his ass locked up tighter than *Master Lock!*
@@donaldjabibski3648 by that time, tge streets changed so drastically. The once feared Frank Lucas was just a common name.
Wow.
I love how Denzel slides the coffee back then asks what can you offer me? Great movie
You know why Denzel is such a good actor? Because he knows how to think like the character he's playing. And that's a rare gift, because anyone can imitate someone, but it takes a real genius to become them.
"get in line....that one stretched around the block too" lol
He made Frank realize the mob was willing to testify against him in court! 😂😂
Denzel Washington is just mesmerizing as an actor; he beautifully embodies every role he plays.
generic comment about how good the acting is
You're just like me fr
@@JarvisBaileyVA right on
This man acts so well , you can see at the exact moment where he feels defeated against Richie..he knows he can’t win although he never says it he SHOWS it in his eyes..this man Denzel is a genius to portray such raw emotion
When Frank got the memo around 4:30 that Richie wanted cops, it was sweet 😂
The Italian mafia did not like black criminals. They were deeply racist and snitching wouldn't be looked down upon if it was against a black guy. This movie is about Frank Lucas and the events are true regardless of if it lines up on your beliefs on Italian mafia
@@jimreily7538 ...and I suppose you're just dripping with experience from 1960's Italian mafia...
@@jimreily7538 No, I don't believe you.
@@jimreily7538 Everything you say is true except you forgot how racist they were. It's like their effing "code" didn't matter when black criminals were involved. Not that I care, but it's pretty accurate. Racism was part and parcel of who they were. Nothing new.

This is what every impersonator impersonates when they do a Denzel impersonation.
The coffee cup scene. Fantastic.
how DW flips the part and almost becomes the interrogator (asking the questions), is a beauty to behold. Great Acting
He looked at the cup he slapped like it was his enemy 😂😂😂😂
You represent progress... My Man!!! They both nailed this scene.
Great film.
Have you never seen Training Day, Safe House or Flight?
@@terrra_2024 Still gotta say Safe House myself.
Also in "He Got Game". Though, not a bad, evil person per se, but misguided.
Even the table wipe with his hand after passing the cup back was smooth 😂
It's so easy to forget just how good an actor Denzel Washington is... his delivery butter smooth and his manner free and easy. I'm only a couple of years older then Denzel but he's been a presence during my whole life. A master of his craft, an erudite, witty, charming and charismatic figure that's earned every accolade ever given.
God Bless you, Sir and thank you for all the memorable moments!
Two great actors.
Frank is a rock, but Richie is diamond. Clash of tight characters.
When he responded to the threat with "that one streeches around the corner too..." Frank´s whole actitud chaged, he knew that moment he was speaking with a men with an equal amount of balls...makes negotiations harder.
My mannnnnn! Only denzel can say that like that 👌🏼😂
Nobody ever talks about that quick blinking he be doing when he is his zone 😂😂😂
Frank said they been bleeding Harlem dry since they got off the boat! That was real and it's crazy how this hadn't changed in 2023!
They were having two conversations at once the double speak in this scene is top tier 🔥
Denzel captured all of the narcissist troupes that they use to manipulate people. Just masterful acting
3:27 that cup slap shows how calm yet pissed off he is
4:37 - 4:46 , frank finally understood who/what hes dealing with while at the same richie earning franks respect
Monumental performances by both men, but this film took Denzel to yet another level, if it were possible.
Possibly the two greatest actors of all time in one room. What an amazing film, absolute classic.
"Onlyest" is my new favorite word.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 🤣😂🤣😂
“Onliest”
The rain and thunders on the background are such a great addition to the scene never noticed it untill now
That cup deserved a Oscar 😂😂
My Man... Superb
The way he slaps that cup away man….so powerful. Denzel is unreal. The emotion. I find myself replaying that part time & time again
My man went through 5 stages of grief in 5 mins 😅
It’s clear who won this interrogation.
the cofee cup
@@lawofthewest1983 the coffe cup that survived 😂
oh man I love the actor Russell Crowe, the actor ladies and gents
My mom: Hey good morning, are you going to have some breakfast?
Me after watching this movie: My man...
Once he realized Richie wasn’t going to take the money he knew he was screwed.
Just a side note I like how they did an improv with a couple cups of coffee.
Thanks so much for the English subtitles when they're SPEAKING ENGLISH YOU DUNCE.
Just phenomenal actors at their very best.
