An outcast New York City cop is charged with bringing down Harlem criminal Frank Lucas, whose real life inspired this partly biographical film.
That coffee cup had 4 days until retirement
He got to old for this shit
Oh MAN I read this comment before it got to that point and I was really trying to remember the context. Once it got there, I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard.

HAHAHAHAHA that’s fucked up…
The coffee cup...whatever happened there
Fun fact: after all the corruption was arrested, the city was finally clean for a whole 365 minutes.
True😂
If one monster goes down, another one spawns right up
What rises up behind it is almost always worse
“Yeah, and we ain’t gonna get ’em all. That ain’t the kind of world it is, but we got ours” -Marty Hart, True Detective
I clicked your 365th like.
365 hours clean is still the NYC record by a full 364.5 hours!
"Yeah Frank. Get in line. That one stretches around the block too".
It was that moment when Frank knew that Richie had his number. That Richie was incorruptable and not scared of Frank.
Not only that Richie was already denied to pursue frank and the crime families with him taking frank he also showed them the snakes that let crime continue under there noses
@@rydgemolino*their noses

Actually, the moment was when Richie signaled he wanted corrupt COPS included in Frank's takedown.

I bet that 70's courtroom coffee tasted terrible....
😂
Couldn't be all bad, some of those detectives live off that coffee. Then again, it wouldn't really matter at that point would it?
Coffee doesn’t change your life one way or the other.
Starbucks had better coffee than 70s courtroom coffee
@@steverogers7601 keep your pumpkin spice attitude to yourself...
There is snitching, and there is snitching. Frank just burned all the cops that were dirty. If he was going down, everyone was going down.
He took down all of his “employees”, partners, basically everyone he knew in the country that he couldn’t deny having dealt with.
Spoken like a true rat
took down his family as well
If you’re going down might as well take everyone with you lol
He’s a rat!
Those guys in the bowling alley deserved prison for wearing those pants in public.
Underrated comment.
Those pants 👀
How do you see through to their pants?
The trousers were more akin to golf.
Things were different in 1971
😂😂😂😂
OMG it just occurred to me that, when they keep passing the cup of coffee its symbolic. It's a stand-in for "check" and "checkmate" in chess. Every time one of them makes a really good point about the current topic in the interrogation, they push the cup towards the other in a way of saying, "Check. Your move." They're "one upping" each other. Great writing!
“One ‘cupping’ each other.” 😂
Nah, its way more symbolic of an olive branch being given. Thats why its so important hes given one again after he knocks the first out.
It's not "chess" as chess means beating one another. They're not trying to beat each other. This is more "what can you offer me, with kindness?". I have what you want, can you give me what I want?
Yup! Isn’t it awesome. I wondered if they did that on their own or if it was written in the script already.
and then there's Trupo's cup of coffee spilling at the end
"You know what, you can do whatever you wanna do. So it don't mean nothin' to me for you to show up tomorrow mornin' with your head blown off, you understand what I'm sayin'?"
"Yeah Frank. Get in line. That one stretches around the block too."
The moment Frank realized this was a man he couldn't intimidate.
I ALWAYS thought it was so cool how they switched! Russell Crowe was the villian and Denzel was the good guy back in 1995 in Virtuosity and Russell Crowe was the cop and Denzel was the villian in 2007 in American Gangster😎

That was the cleanest cup smack ive ever witnessed. Not a drop, of that coffee hit that table.
I like how Frank and the Detective find common agreeable grounds knowing where they both come from and what they want. Frank probably never seen a good cop a day in his life. and any good cop he seen probably died in front of him
I always loved the choice by the writers for the cup of coffee to spill when Trupo stands up. Signifying he’s made his decision to kill himself. If he was still wanting to be alive, he wouldn’t just stand up and ruin his bedsheet by spilling the coffee. But he knew he’d be dead soon, so why should he care.
But…that’s not true at all!
I just watched a scene with Trupo as part of another organization that advanced on the Harkonnen.
Seemed like he was still busy.
now the housekeepers gotta find a dead body, and deal with a coffee stain. no manners at all. the man is pure evil
You’re looking into it way too much
@@dongatello6969 😂 how? That’s clearly what the choice was made for you. It’s not even looking into it too deeply. Why else would they choose to do that?
@@DDavy2014 you're absolutely right, small but significant detail.
Can’t blame him for snitching. Everybody got too greedy, it was never going to be enough.
Especially Trupo. Got too personal and pushed Frank too hard.
Vastly underrated movie. So epic.
Underrated? Everyone love this movie
This isn't underrated. It's a Ridley Scott movie.
Such a great movie
Sadly the real Frank never really got back on the right way.
He found a jewel encrusted golden turd?
Love this film …. Denzel and Russel ,,, legends the pair of them !!!
One of denzel Washingtons best movies
amazing acting
“Here’s pen and paper, tell us where Wakanda is
… And also Thanos while you’re at it”
The cop on the task force shown at 4:10 is named alvin spearmen.
He was newark PD until he retired. The actual Alvin Spearmen is an incredibly nice 6"0+ black guy. Great guy.
That coffee spilling on the bed gives me major anxiety 😬
2:43 The moment Richie earned Frank's respect
It must be nice playing the same character in every movie. In this scene, Alonzo, I mean Frank, is basically every character from every other movie this dude's been in.
Are you seriously unaware of Denzel Washington's diverse body of work? He won his first Oscar for "Glory," a historical war drama. In "Mo' Better Blues," he played a jazz musician with big dreams. In "Philadelphia," he was a lawyer defending Tom Hanks' character, who was fired for having AIDS. "Remember the Titans" had him as the head coach of a newly integrated high school football team. I could list 20-30 more films. He’s proven his immense talent repeatedly, and he certainly doesn’t play the same character in every movie.
@@HD-uo5dd Are you seriously not aware of Denzel's body of work? You must not be aware because you would realize that he's the same fckn person in every fckn movie! I have seen just about every Denzel film so you don't need to explain as if I've been living on Mars. It sounds like you need to go watch these movies because you don't know WTF you're talking about! By the way, a lengthy, and even if diverse, body of work doesn't mean that this man is not playing the same fckn guy in every movie! The fact that he says, "My man," in just about every movie is a tremendous indicator that he plays the same fckn guy! I'm going to block you now, so you don't need to respond. I won't get your response. And, lord knows you'll need the last word but you won't get it. At least not here with me. So, piss off!
My Man!
Frank met his match here. Awesome scene
Based on true events ..one the best movies Denzel and Russell Crowe have made...
Coffee is a witness to a whole lot of things. Fax
Just started reading the book. Amazing
Good point
Damn, Trupo was just getting ready to open his mind.
My favorite is how he presses his finger on the table as he’s talking. 👇🏾
Amazing.
Get,in line! My-man
The amount of acting talent in this movie is staggering.
Ngl, I love this movie. But after watching the little documentary thing on Frank Lucas and finding out that the REAL Frank Lucas wasn’t nothing more than a errand boy for Bumpy Johnson kinda ruined it for me 😭
Atleast second cup survived the wrath of the frank
Total respect and trust from Frank to Richie.
Frank only snitches on the dirty cops. He didnt snitch on his supplier in Vietnam
I don't think jurisdiction would reach that far.
wouldn't have mattered anyway.
@chrysalis3508 I never said it would of mattered
Who? His wife’s cousin in the Army? He’s back in the USA and the war is over. Communists won. The grower? He’s also in a different country like Laos or Cambodia
What are the cops going to do about the grower 😂 dumb ass
“I ain’t seen normal since I was six years old” 💯
So many coffee cups died in this scenes! RIP
Richie had one thing wrong, it was not a thing in the 70s to go after offshore accounts, it wasn't until the 80s when they started going after that money.
“You are special” (Trupo). Knew that was coming even before the scene.
My problem with this otherwise enjoyable movie is there is no way that a guy who just became a lawyer is given the responsibility of handling such a big case
Other than the fact this is a true story and Richie Roberts is a real person who was a detective turned Lawyer and who was indeed given such a high profile case shortly after becoming an assistant prosecutor, that's a really great point you made there 😂
In the end,all these snitches are nothing!!!😢
My favorite scene when the bad guys had to answer for what they’ve done.
I think the important question is what was in Josh Brolin's mug at the end of this clip? Since when does coffee sizzle when it spills on a blanket? Was the mug full of acid? Was the blanket covered in splooge and that's the sound that coffee hitting splooge soaked blanket makes? I'm so confused.
The coffee was hot fool
Frank talking about his cousin becoming the new normal has always stood out to me. I was probably around 14 when my dad took me to see this movie so I marvel at the idea that grown men would do a child that way
Stuff like that cements my distrust toward the "authorities"
Not for nothing, when you have to bust a group of punk kids on a regular who very well could blast back at you, you're going to be a little stiff. But I think knocking teeth out is a decent enough message that you're not playing around
There has to be some intelligence in the mind of an officer that merits the justice they are trying to uphold. As in the system is going to do its duty to correct a young fool
You on the other hand are honor bound. In fact its in your anonymity which merits strength. My dad happened to work in corrections as a rehabilitation educator. He knows full well that the police hire hot blooded greenhorns
"My man"
It’s sad cause like Richie said.. you represent progress that’s gonna lose them a lot of money. And funny part about it what people get mixed up it ain’t about money. It’s a black man making progress that’s the real issue..
2:31 they're not my kind
Frank was the biggest snitch of them all 🐀🐀
“They are gettin too old for this shit”
" My man ", he says in this movie and " my n ... " in Training Day. Owns everyone!
4:08 I could swear this is Kujan from Usual Suspects, but it can't be the same actor
Everyone gangsta ‘til they’re passed that coffee cup.
Such a great fucking movie. Both actors are top notch.
When Denzel says My man I go with him
After all the cleaning, there was no more bad cops ever again.
It's not snitching when you are turning in dirty cops.
Lol ok bud
I mean I don’t know but I don’t think niggas in the streets would be mad if he just told on the cops only 😂
Something a snitch would say. 😂🤣😭
@@hawk66100 Snitching is when you inform on someone who is part of your team. Like when Henry Hill snitched on Paulie and Jimmy so he doesn’t go down for dealing drugs.
Dirty cops aren’t part of Franks organization. They were extorting him and then stole his getaway money, slapped around his wife and killed his dog when they found out Frank was about to get arrested by Richie.

I'm innocent Richie that's the truth.
Was this before " snitches get stitches " ? Asking for a friend.
Him passing him the coffe cup bothered me for some reason
Idk the coffee cup falling down and spilling coffee all over the bed looked like someone blowing their brains as they fell down. Kinda like what Trupo was about to do.
Richie I was only trying to see if you were still here. I dont know you and if I say something just ignore it.
The mezzanos testified against him?! For what
3:52 Rowin Atkin Downes
Harlem: "I DONT CARE WHAT IT COST JUST MAKE THIS MAN WELL AGAIN!"
Frank: "Thank you harlem"
Is it really snitching if your snitching on cops or is it Justice
Frank capping, Nicky Barnes, Fat Cat, Guy, & Preacher were the main niggas back then.
😂 turning over corrupt cops isnt snitching
I don't think there's a movie scene with Denzel that I don't like at this point
Italians weren’t worried about black bizz bullshit. Making something more than it was. He was allowed because the powers to be let him. Made money happy spade till he wasn’t allowed to.
denzel washington is an amazing actor .. one of the best ... but this scene, crowe schooled him
Broke my heart when Frank told
Why
@welcome_to_macnelsonworld because it ruined his legacy. He would've been Top 5 black American Gangsters if he didn't cooperate but because he did he doesn't even count
Will you snitch?
Say less
What a snitch
What sucks is that 95% of films or books on Organized crime figures end with them telling because that allows for all the details and the basis of the film/book. The very few that didnt tell, we dont know the fine details of their story, we can guess but without publicly available documents and transcripts its tough to fill in the blanks. The people who stood tall and didnt tell are the ones that I think deserve the praise, not these dudes who played the game and got the benefits and then told on another man to get out of what they did, thats a coward. I can say that because Ive been put to the test and given the option to make a phone call and everything would go away, I could never look at myself in the mirror doing that. People who do make that choice to tell end up doing a life sentence as a rat
