    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    I have been making my own custom turrets with athletic tape and a fine point black sharpie or a good pen and your method you show here, using a gold, white or silver Sharpie marker for about 20 years. This is the first time i have seen someone else make such a video. Great job. A few other tips: For ever 50 yards like 250, 350, 450, add a hash mark, in addition to the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6..... always mark the entire revolution in the event you have a wounded animal at over 500 or 600 yards amd for shooting steel out to 1000 yards. I chrono the load and put in the elevation and estimated temp you will be hunting at using a phone app like strelok or hornady 4dof. Use acetone or denatured alcohol to clean the turret before writing on it with the marker and also to erase/clean off old numbers if switching loads. Kenton industries makes both a custom turret or a custom tape for shooter's wanting something more permanent once they have a set load for that firearm.

    Great idea for someone who moves his scope fro rifle to rifle. Or different loads for different animals.

    I did this with the exception that I was using a 22lr sweet scope and I sanded off the marks off of it and left it bare aluminium then took it to the 100 yard indoor range that has a target that you punch in the distance you want and it moves your target to that distance so I took the eley target ammo and from a 50 yard zero I went every 10 yards out to 100 so I could use that scope for nrl22 as I am on a tight budget it was the best way for me to use a inexpensive scope with some type of accuracy

    Great stuff! Like Ryan Cleckner says, ( try dope) read the box, look at software. Then as you said, get a correct velocity. But if you can, try to actually see where "your" set up hits at a range and write that down. If there is room on your cap, put a small hash mark at the "50's". Thanks! Great vid...

    My nightforce has 30 moa holdover in the reticle, which I use for those quick shots where you don’t have time to figure out all the variables to disl with the turret. Just have your moa corrections in 50 yard increments taped to the side of your rifle. Works out to about 500, then you want to be more precise after that.

    Good economical advice. A simple BDC reticle does the same trick, and might allow you to estimate the range just looking through it.
    Past max point-blank range many traditional bullets drop like a stone, so getting the distance right is the elephant in the room here

    You can get a fine tip sharpie for cleaner numbers and perhaps more marks (even just a line for 50 yards in between) to avoid any issues.

  • @Fiddib
    @Fiddib 3 місяці тому

    If you use a super sharpie and roman numerals for the 100’s, with color dots for 25’s (red is 25, green is 50, etc) i find it is quite a bit “cleaner” and easy to use plus it’s more accurate

    I've done this before myself. I use a fine point silver paint pen though. It's worked great for my longrange silhouette matches. However, Lately I've just been using hold overs with the reticle. That works out to 800 yards pretty easily.

  • @michaelwilson9986

    One Thing More..
    Big Woods Ya Dont Need A Dial Up,Then Its Fine to Zero @ 100.
    Ya While I agree there as a whole. Alot times the Big Woods are mtn areas of the east. With broken fields here n there..Could Woods 1 day Beam Fields the next or Later in season Ridge to Ridge.
    So Yes A dial up is sometimes very helpful same as a 200 yard zero. Or drop comp reticle.
    Also I commented earlier bout erasesing the marks.. have to remember that you did about dry erase pens. Likely better than qtip n case lube😉👍

    Interesting n well done except 1 area.. I maybe old school here n use older scopes along with newbies. I recall reading keep oil n harsh stuff away from the turrets n kens areas.Hold that thought.
    I also use sharpies in my handload development to mark my cases Now Back to thought.. If doing this to a scope turret cap n needing wipe of to change..I think I would use some of the pump spray lube on a rag or q tip to remove the sharpie.. it would lessen the chance or any liquid getting to the seals ..At least to my thinking.

    The problem that I see with this is the deer, elk, ect. that you're hunting probably isn't going to be at 300 yards or 400 yards. They're probably gonna be at 276 yards or 337 yards or something like that. In which case you're still gonna wanna consult a D.O.P.E. card or ballistic chart.

    • @mqeqeshe1
      @mqeqeshe1 4 місяці тому +1

      You just interpolate between the marks. For 337 yards you adjust the dial about 1/3 of the way between 300 and 400. This gets you within a click or two no problem. Plenty accurate for quick shots under 600 yards.

    Hello again fellas. Off the bus subject of this video, but I'm hoping one of you might help me ease my mind on the issue of reaming a stainless Rossi Model 1895 in 45-70 out to 45-90. I have read that there's a substantial improvement as a better close in Bear gun, especially when there's the chance of a close encounter with a Grizzly instead of even a big Black; something to the effect of several hundred fps added velocity & + 500 ft# of energy (can't recall if that's st the muzzle or at 100yrd.) My concern is that I noticed that all those "45-" cartridges have a taper of about.020" from just ahead of the rim to the front of the case mouth. I imagine this is to ade in extraction, but wouldn't this also make a 45-70 fit ever so slightly loose in a 45-90 chamber? Possibly causing accuracy loss, even split cases? I know Doug Turnbull & others have made a business out of these conversions, & everything I've read says there's no problem using the shorter case in a longer chamber because of headspacing on the rim. I also understand that any loss in accuracy would be miniscule "up close & personal range" with a surly bruin, but considering the plan is for this to be an anything goes rifle that might need to tag an elk out to 250yrds or so that miniscule loss could be the difference between Tenderloin on the grill...or not. So, what are your thoughts? Sorry for the long message. And as always thank you for your excellent content.

    So if we dial, a plain ole duplex reticle would be great.. and a 2nd focal plane scope would work at any magnification..

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors

      Yes, plain duplex works fine for dialing, but the addition of MOA or Mil dots on the horizontal line are great for wind deflection compensation.

    this is all great as long as your scope tracks accurately . the worst scopes for tracking reliably are leupold . ive owned lots over the years and they are the worst . usually takes a shot or two before they finally move . and everyone i talk too have the same issue . some even whack em with sticks to help them move internally . i now use sightron or huskemaw or nikon . all i can trust to move when i adjust them . just a heads up to all you out there who own a leupold . in my opinion their overpriced junk !!!!

    • @edwardabrams4972

      Sorry about your luck😳 but my 60+ years using Leupold and hundreds of rifles since I am a collector besides a hunter and reloader and have only had one scope of a Leupold go out and it was that way when I bought the gun used. I sent it back to Leupold and they gave me a brand new scope No charge! I have no experience with Huskemaw but I don’t think they have a lifetime warranty less off on a Used scope you may have bought! I take most of the scopes off my guns and put Leupolds on them and give the others to my gunsmith for free and put New Leupolds on them. I have 8 guns in at my gunsmith right now and they all have Leupolds waiting to be out on them! I have a bunch of other high end scopes to like Nightforce but they are pretty heavy for pack a rifle with!

    • @jk-kr8jt
      @jk-kr8jt 4 місяці тому +1

      Sorry to hear about your experience. I've never had an issue with Leupold. But, I generally don't dial for elevation or windage in the field, only at the range. Generally, not always, when making an adjustment I will rap the scope with a knuckle to ensure the tube and springs are "settled ". That is more of a habit than anything else and scope brand is meaningless to my "habit ". If I had your experience with Leupold I'd shoot something else too.

    Oh you admitted to being a gun writer. I see now, you are marketing the new exposed turret scopes. Leupold drop you some change for this? The reason I ask is at 300 yards there really is no need to dial a turret yet that was your shooting example. The 600 yards you are promoting as acceptable range for hunting puts you squarely in the jack ass category.
