I just realized, how many dishes are similar in this part of Europe.
Maybe it's that why we like Hungarians in Poland :)

You gotta try these too (most likely you wont find these anywhere else outside this region) :
    Sweets, snacks:
    - Túró rudi (in almost every supermarket): quark rolls coated in chocolate, get the one with the red dots on the packaging ("Piros pöttyös" branded)
    - Somlói Galuska ( in most supermarkets) : kind of a pastry with choclate sauce and whipped cream- Túrós rétes, mákos rétes ( at bakeries, don't buy it at supermarkets) : It's basically strudel, but if you manage to buy on that is made of traditional recepie (it's rare tough, usually at fairs/festivals) you get and experience that you won't get anywhere else- cakes: Dobos torta (torta = tart) , Oroszkrém torta, Rákóci túrós
    - Peeled, roasted sunflower seeds (at supermarkets)
    Street food:
    - Véres hurka ( can be bought at street sale points called "laci konyha" you can surely find some at the Budapest Christmas Fair ) : some sort of a baked sausage, but the filing contains rice cooked in pig blood (don't worry its completely healty , extremely delicious and nutritious) similar to the German "blutwurst"
    - Sült kolbász (also at "laci konyha"-s ) : a sort of a baked sausage , similar to the German "bratwurts" but with Hungarian flavours (more spicey, more paprika etc) , best with mayonnaise
    - Tócsni or beré at some places (usually at markets or fairs) similar to lános but made of potato , also know as "rösti" in German speaking countries
    Dishes (at restaurants ) :
    - Soups: Jókai bab leves (leves = soup) : bean soup, Újházy tyúk hús leves: chicken sop , Bajai halászlé : fish soup
    - Lecsó: vegetable stew (paprika, tomato mostly) you can get it also with eggs (tojásos) or rice (rizses)
    - Túrós csusza: pasta with bacon and quark and sour cream
    - Vadas knédlivel: it's meat with steamed noodles in a special sauce ( if you like carrots you'll like this) - Hagymás rostélyos : Pork chops with onions
    Beverages:
    - Tokaji aszú, Tokaji szamorodni: sweet , high quality wine (5-7 CAD a botlle=0.7 L at supermarkets)
    - Fröccs: a spritzer with wine (at any pub)
    - Pálinka : a very strong short drink (usually with higher than 50% alcohol concentration) made of different fruit flavours (plum, peach, pear, cherry, grape etc..)
    - Unicum ( supermarkets) : a light short drink, herbal liqueur
for the pronounciation of the Hungarian words, check forvo.com

Thank you for all these recommendations! We have so much food to try now :P We almost tried the blood sausage at the Christmas Fair but had the Sült kolbász instead. Very delicious. Really appreciate the tips John!

I've been really enjoying your videos of your travels in Hungary. My father was also from there. When I was 2, my grandmother from Hungary came to stay with us for about six months. While she was here, she taught my mother how to cook a lot of traditional Hungarian dishes, so we were lucky to grow up eating Hungarian-style food.

If it's done right the cabbage naturally caramelizes and sweetens on during the frying toasting stage of the cooking process

    • @celeriacmarcus
      @celeriacmarcus 5 років тому

The noodles with cabbage is done with shredded cabbage until it caramelizes like when you cook down onions for french onion soup. The cabbage rolls are called stuffed cabbage and it's a winter dish.. In the summer you can get stuffed peppers. Same filling with rice and chopped meet but they serve it with plain tomato sauce.

You know we usually don't eat pickles in itself (alone), we eat it as an additional desert to a main meal. Eg. schnitzel/fried chicken + french fries + pickles or stew + potato + pickles, you can try a bunch of different combinations, usually some kind of meat + some kind of potato/rice and pickles. It adds an additional flavor to the mix.
The cheese on the lángos is something of a new invention because back in the "old days" (before 2000) we didn't put cheese on the lángos. We put garlic juice and sour cream. Even the added sour cream wasn't that usual as today. Lángos in itself is a bunch of calories (it's basically white flour and oil), the cheese and the sour cream (bunch of fat) on top of that is disastrous. :D
What you found goulash is the real goulash, it's a soup.
Káposztás tészta (cabbage with pasta): put ground black pepper on it. It's a very cheap meal, not really exciting but from time to time it's good.
Good foods, we like them! :)

    Hi!
    I'm from Hungary
You guys ate some tradicional hungarian food but in hungary we eat it other tipes
The 1 thing you ate is salad for us we eat it with meat and potatos or rice. For me it was so funny to see you ate it for breakfast becouse we eat for lunch.
The thing you ate in the end of the vidio, it's meat and rice in hungarian pancake and we eat this with "uborka saláta"
The cake you ate is the cake of the year
Every year we have a race and peoples bake their cakes but they have to make they own recips.
The other peoples who tasted it choose what's the best and vote for it, this is the cake of the year, what you taste.
    I like Your channel guys

Do you have any plans to tour Belarus? I would gladly watched. I think that is the cheapest country in Europe. I heard it is a beautiful and safe country.

I don't think we'll make it to Belarus on this trip but definitely hoping to explore more of that region in the future - especially if it's cheap!

That lángos was ridiculously expensive, it should be no more than 250, the ingredients costs about 80.

Rule NR 1. Don't change money in airport or trainstations! 1 EUR is about 324 HUF. So you can around 320-322 changing in the city.

Your gulyás was thiker, bec that was a soup. All west europaens call both food just goulash, (gulyás leves or bográcsgulyás) even its different. the soup is a soup what you ate, and the other "goulsah" sould be not called goulash. We call this marha pörkölt. This is what we eat with dumpling. So the too food taste similar, but the first is just a rich soup but the other (pörkölt) is a main dish, you should eat also a salad to that.
