Another delicious video!:) Thank you, we can't wait to try those next week:) And yes, please make another video with even more Hungarian dishes!:) Greetings from Greece, Mirella and Panos
As half Dutch/Hungarian I cook Hungarian dishes at least two times a week, from the simple ones to complicated and time consuming ones (the latter mostly in the weekends because good Hungarian cooking is mostly slow cooking). I love every Hungarian dish, even kocsonya, which non of my (Dutch) friends even dare to try (it sounds like vomit in Dutch 😂). I always have homemade savanyúság to go with the dishes, káposzta, uborka, paradicsom, karfiol, retek és vegyes saláta. Luckily I can get all my Hungarian food stuff and ingredients from a (web)shop over here in the Netherlands. The owner drives to Hungary every weekend to buy everything, even turó. You have to be quick for turó though, most of the time it’s already sold out on Tuesdays. If anyone reading this would like to try Hungarian cooking, please try to get some real Hungarian paprika (powder), it tastes so much better than the red muck they sell in the supermarkets over here! Μy favourite dishes, apart from the ones in the video (I make them all regularly and I really love lecsó, for breakfast, lunch or dinner), so many. But if I have to name a few: csontleves májas gombóccal, hideg cseresznye leves, töltött paprika, rakott krumpli, paprikás krumpli, rántott csirke és Bécsi szelet, turós tészta, májas hurka, Bakonyi szertésszelet, csigány és csángó pecsenye, lángos (az eredeti, ahogy nagymama készítette; nem az, ami pizzává változott), mindféle rétes (nagymama túrós rétese volt a legfinomabb, amit valaha ettem), flódni, vargabéles, beigli … Túl sok, hogy megemlítsem. As is the case in most places: I would recommend anyone to have dinner outside of the city centre or touristy places. You get better food most of the time for a lot lower price. One of my favourite restaurants is “A Harapó Mókus” in Óbuda. It’s a bit out of the way (though easily reachable by tram 1, 17, 19 or 41) but I never had better food in Budapest. Downside for tourists is that the menu is in Hungarian only so keep Google translate or DeepL handy. To Stuffed Cabbage: love your channel, keep it up!
I got hungry as I went through your comment! Thank you so much! I used to go Mókus Vendéglő pretty frequently some years ago, I always enjoyed it, so thanks for reminding me, need to visit again 😊

Like your video! I've been to Budapest three times! There's a popular food stall in Central Market and I love to eat there all the time. As you mentioned the chicken paprika was lovely and the stuffed cabbage was as well.😋
Hi. So as you say it is perfectly possible to go and eat at the Central Market every day and basically have most of the hungarian specialities at good price and good quality food? :)) Because I love markets too and I'm going to Budapest in the near future 👍
Definitely watch all of the videos prior to visiting Budapest. The videos are excellent. Make sure you watch the one on the transit system. We got a 15 day pass and were checked daily in the Metro and Trams.. ❤
Glad to hear that! It is one of our purpuse with this video to show people all the different kinds of dishes that can be tried here, and to have more reason to come back 😀
There is a dish in Poland, called gołąbki (literally little doves, I have no idea why) that is very similar to the stuffed cabbage you showed in the video. When I will be in Budapest I have to try them and compare. Also goulash and lecso are very popular in Poland, but probably taste different. I have to try them too.
I have a good friend who is Polish, he mentioned the Golabki to me too, and that each year when he visits family at Christmas time he needs to make Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage for them 😂 not saying it's better at all, but funny that they enjoy it so much 😊 but next time I'm in Poland I will have to try Golabki 😉
My favorite restaurant is Kehli in Budapest. My favorite foods are Vadas zsemle gombóccal, pheasant soup and of course for dessert, Madártej and gesztenye püré with whipped cream.
Oh, pheasant soup! Pheasant somehow add a fantastic special flavour to meat soup what nothing else can do. It somehow tastes like a special spice but it is the pheasant meat itself. The best meat soup ever!
Thanks for sharing this, very well explained. As a Hungarian myself I have been making these dishes to my foreign friends, and now my Husband knows as well about Hungarian cuisine, he loves the variety of flavours, never bored with the spicy and delicious dishes that I make. We became vegan/vegetarian but still I’m cooking the meatless versions of the traditional meals. But I can say once you taste our specialities you will never forget the taste of it 😋👩🏻🍳
Thanks for this video. It’s really helpful! Watching this at midnight is not a good idea, got me feeling really hungry xD Please make a video on street food :)
I live in Western Europe. The goulash I know is more like a stew and saucy. We eat it with rice and add sweat peas. Don't ask me why. But it's good. Maybe it resembles pörkölt more than it does goulash? Whenever I make it myself, I add lots of smoked paprika powder and a little garlic.
Getto Gulyas is the best restaurant whem comes to flavor, quality, service, overall actually. We still in Budapest and some other places we've tried didn't offer the same good food and service, we eat 3 dishes and 1 big lemonade for 26 euros only.
Followed just about all of your recommendations for food over the last few days (in Hungry now). You rock! We also took your advice and ate at Retek Bisztro TWICE. OMG it was amazing. Thank you thank you thank you!!! To anyone visiting grab a reservation to Retek and GO!
Just came back from Budapest ( my husband’s home country). Love the choices but I have to also recommend any catfish/carp dishes. Also, we head over to an amazing restaurant called Kispiac Bisztro-roasted duck is spot on! Hungarian wines are underrated-video on that would be great!
Oh yes, a nice Catfish (Harcsa) Paprikas, that is also very yum yum! Thanks for the recommendation, I have not tried Kispiac Bisztro yet, but will surely go there to have a nice meal too! 😊
My lovely hungarian lady has made several vegetarian versions of some of these, her stuffed cabbage is amazing. I eat fish but hate Carp which is everywhere and often full of bones. Had a woodland mushroom ghoulash in Budapest that was awesome. Being an utter pain in the arse I don't like deep fried food very much either, I'll run from the breaded deep fried cheese but an slowly learning to embrace LANGOS. The buckets of lightly pickled vegetables from the supermarket are my favorite thing and always get a bucket into the suitcase coming home
It's really good to hear that even in vegetarian form you can enjoy some of the dishes. One thing not on this list but can be made vegetarian and I love it is the Gomba Pörkölt or mushroom stew 😊 I'm sure you would enjoy that too! :)
I plan to visit in June of next year and your videos have been very helpful. The food looks amazing. The only difficult part is that I do not like the texture of cooked onions, so I may not get to enjoy a number of these.
Hey there! In many of the dishes the onions are cooked to the point where they are completely broken down, so you'll barely feel them 😊 Paprika flavor will be more prominent in many of these 😊
It's very true! When I ask my Hungarian friends to suggest good Hungarian restaurants, they often can't give a proper answer because they usually eat the typical dishes at home :D
That's because we grow up eating the best food /dishes made by our grandmas and mom...none compares to them...we don't go to restaurants often to eat out....
Hey there! We don't have another list unfortunately, the one in the description is already very long, but whenever we find something new that we enjoy we'll surely update the list or feature those in our future videos :)
5 hónapja jöttem el otthonról Spanyolországba és piszkosul hiányzik egy jó kis pörkölt nokedlivel, amit a nagymamám csinál, nincs párja a világon, pazar videó!
Having stayed in Pest this week we can definitely agree and disagree with some recommendations here for those planning on coming soon. Kifőzdé restaurants are hardly open on weekends so don’t expect to easily find one, or they’ll only be open for lunch with average set menus, rarely the big ticket food items. At night they double/triple prices and frankly the service was poor and quality was to the point we didn’t finish our meals at Papa Frici for example. Keep in mind these prices also don’t reflect service charges which range from 10-15% which are auto added to final bills. Retek Bizstro was obscenely priced Your recommended Belvárosi Disznótoros was brilliant, but one place not mentioned: Hungarikum Bizstro - that was excellent (bit expensive at 14/15,000ft) with live music and attentive staff and insanely good food. Anyone else looking for a cheap eat that is open all hours you can get really high quality Gyros on Király Utca near Deák Ferenc Tér Metro.
Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience! Will need to give Hungarikum Bisztro a shot as many years ago I didn't hear good things about it but looks like they improved as I have seen more praise lately, will definately give it a shot too 😊
Always wanted to go to Hungary but it just never worked out. Well I’m in Europe and my plans got drastically cancelled (turned out to be a good thing in the end) and here I am… Budapest. Just found you and love you man. You’re a credit to your country. I went to a local place and they had none of these dishes. Went to another place and they had a few of these food items but was meh. So I’m going to make it myself. I don’t know what meat yet but coating it with potatoes???? What an incredible idea. Thanks Hungary! Incredibly unlikely but if I see you in the street today, I’m gonna shake your hand. I’m terrible with faces so I probably wouldn’t even recognize you. But again, appreciate your Channel
Glad to see that even if you couldn't find a good restaurant with some of these items you are still having a good time and stay positive! 😊 Thanks for the encouraging comment about what we do 😊
Thank you so much for the Support! :) it will take some time to make a part 2, which will be about food that are probably lesser known and popular like the ones here. However regarding Desserts and sweets we have a recent video that covers that sweet topic 😊

Hey there! There are dishes which are called "Jóasszony Módra" which kinda means "ala Good Lady" or "How a Good Lady would make it" :) Usually it's a pork slice (Sertésborda Jóasszony Módra, or Sertésszelet Jóasszony Módra). Regarding Paprika poweder, If you go to a convenience store or specialty spice store the thing you should look out for is the place of origin. Unfortunately some packages will contain a mix of Hungarian and other regional peppers to make it cheaper but it won't be good quality. If the package says its 100% made of peppers from Hungarian origin it should be fine, but you can also look for the origin to be from Kalocsa (A very specific part of Hungary). These would have a red EU badge of "Protected designation of origin". If you see that seal, it should be good :)
Will definately look, although Hungarian cuisine doesn't have a lot of food items that can be called "street food". Lángos and Chimney Cake definately fit the bill, and eating a nice grilled Sausage at a standing stall outside of a Butchers is also sort of a Streetfood experience :) But will look at what can be made into worthy content :)
I visited Budapest on a day trip while I was in Slovakia to visit relatives. I found stuffed cabbage on restaurant menus in Budapest but none in Bratislava, which was surprising to me because stuffed cabbage, or cabbage rolls, was THE family favourite from my Slovakian great grandmother. I wonder why it's less popular there now... It's maybe more of a home food or perhaps more associated with other places and therefore not distinctly Slovakian enough to be on restaurant menus 🤔
@@StuffedCabbageAdventuresmaybe I lucked out in Budapest and didn’t look hard enough in Bratislava. They are definitely tedious! I think I’ve only ever had them on special occasions. Anyway, great video as always!
To be honest last time I went for a Gyros or Döner on Erzsébet körút was when I used to attend parties and needed something to soak up the alcohol and most of those were just doing what the food needed to do, but were not super great so not sure if I would recommend any of them :) Szeráj to me stood out a bit always and I hear Budapest Gyros is nice, but close to Akácfa utca Istanbul Kebab is also okay. To be honest my favorite Gyros right now is Floga Grill, but thats not close to Erzsebet Korut :)
Hey there! As a local my knowledge about Hotels is limited since I do not stay at any of them (hopefully one day some of them may invite us for a stay 😅). There are however Facebook groups like "Budapest Holiday, Hotel and Travel Tips for Tourists" and "Things to do in Budapest" where many visitors share their experiences and hotels they stayed at, and many are also asking for recommendations. Perhaps a post in those groups could help with getting some ideas 😊
Can someone also recommend some traditional vegetarian food? Its a bit sad that in this video none was mentioned and I dont want to eat "normal" vegetarian food when I visit Budapest
I understand it's a bit sad, but like I mentioned in another video, Hungarian cuisine is very meat heavy and Vegetarian food (that is traditionally Hungarian) is kind of less prominent on restaurant menus. For example Hungary has a lot of pottages primarily made from vegetables, like Potato Pottage, Bean pottage, Grean Pea Pottage etc, but you can mainly find these in Eating houses (Kifőzde or Étkezde) and not on restaurant menus. I've been once to Vegan Garden Restaurant and they have Mushroom Stew (Gomba Paprikás) which is very nice and is traditional, rare on menus but here it was available (and I think it is also available in KIOSK restaurant, and Ghettó Gulyás Restaurant) and they also had the Vegan version of Jókai Bean Soup (its made without the meat). I can recommend these to be tried.
Hi there, I tried a dish sort of cauliflower baked with rice and topped with sour cream at Belvarosi Disznotoros. Would you know the name of this dish?
Hey there! It was likely "Rakott Karfiol", rakott meaning something like layered and Karfiol being the cauliflower 😊 it's usually available in eating houses or places like Belvárosi Disznótoros. I personally am not a fan but my producer enjoys it, hope you liked it too 😊
Nice video! Can you suggest some restaurants where you can find these traditional dishes and maybe accompanied with some folk music? I'm visiting Budapest next week!
Hey there! To be honest, when we talk about folk music in restaurants in most cases those will be gypsy bands playing music (which is part of our culture indeed and is nice to listen to). But having a band play usually requires space and is expensive for the restaurants, so perhaps only a few places do this and those will have a higher price tag. There is Kacsa Étterem on Buda side which looks to still have regular Live Music. New York Cafe regularly has Gypsy music being played by a band, but I would only go there for the Architecture and maybe 1 coffee and a cake. This practice of having a band playing in a restaurant is more often found in the countryside these days.
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures Thank you very much for your advice! Your videos have been very helpful to me! I watched the majority of them in one day and I have made an idea! Keep this great work!
People have been recommending an app called_ Happy Cow. It shows Vegetarian, Vegan etc places on a map. I have checked it out myself and I believe it's very useful to find such establishments :)
If I hate sour cream, how rude is it to ask for "no sour cream" on a dish ..and how would I say that? Lol. I'm visiting for the first time in March. I'm putting your videos to good use. Thanks
You can say : "Tejföl nélkül kérem szépen" - as in I would like it without Sour cream please. It's not rude at all, maybe a few old school waiters may raise an eyebrow but shouldn't be an issue. There are people who are lactose intolerant who may want to taste a dish but can't have things like sour cream, so it should be accepted 😊
I like most of the food you mentioned. Some of my favourites are szilvás gombóc, hurka, Székely gulyás, rakott krumpli, csöröge, dobos torta, uborka saláta, rétes. Hirtelen nagyon éhes vagyok. 😂😂😂
Hey there! Pozsonyi Kisvendéglő for example at Pozsonyi út has it on the menu and it was nice when we tried it :) I believe Regős Étterem and Tüköry Étterem also have it available :)
Hey there! That's a dough that's similar to donut and it's filled with plum jam, it's a specific item for Szatmár county where a unique kind plum is grown 😊
Hey there! Most of the traditional food has an element of meat... we even have a pasta that is mixed with curd and we still put bacon into that 😅 There is a place called Vegan Garden restaurant in the city center, they have some of the traditional dishes made vegan style, the Forest Mushroom Paprikash is one of my favorite dishes that doesnt have meat :) They also have a version of Ghoulash that is Vegan. Other than this, I hear a lot of people praise the "Happy Cow" app, which helps with finding vegan, vegetarian and gluten/lactose free places. You should be fine with trying Lángos or Chimney cake, those are considered vegetarian (although there can be meat toppings for Lángos, but just don't order those :))
Hey there, I hope you could find a place in the meantime with Borzaska. I saw it on the menu at Pozsonyi Kisvendéglő, and perhaps Regős Vendéglő or Tüköry Étterem may also have it on their menu 😊

Lengyel, magyar - két jó barát, együtt harcol, s issza borát
That's what I've been learning from kindergarten 👍
My favorite restaurant is Kehli in Budapest. My favorite foods are Vadas zsemle gombóccal, pheasant soup and of course for dessert, Madártej and gesztenye püré with whipped cream.
Oh yes, Kehli is also a nice Restaurant indeed! Super huge portions but the food has a nice "home-y" feel :)
Oh, pheasant soup! Pheasant somehow add a fantastic special flavour to meat soup what nothing else can do. It somehow tastes like a special spice but it is the pheasant meat itself. The best meat soup ever!
Such a helpful video, thank you! I’ll be visiting Budapest soon and can’t wait to try some of these dishes 😊
Hope you'll enjoy your stay in Budapest and will have some delicious adventures 😊
Thanks for sharing this, very well explained. As a Hungarian myself I have been making these dishes to my foreign friends, and now my Husband knows as well about Hungarian cuisine, he loves the variety of flavours, never bored with the spicy and delicious dishes that I make. We became vegan/vegetarian but still
I’m cooking the meatless versions of the traditional meals. But I can say once you taste our specialities you will never forget the taste of it 😋👩🏻🍳
Thanks for this video. It’s really helpful!
Watching this at midnight is not a good idea, got me feeling really hungry xD
Please make a video on street food :)
Great video and great information thank you
I'm coming to Budapest for a week later on in the year, Watching these videos makes me so excited for the food.
Happy to hear you find these useful! I hope you'll enjoy your time here when you come 😊
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this nice video - looking forward for your next video about food :)
Your guess is perfect. Gulyás is a soup from beef. What non-hungarians eat as goulash is pörkölt...
Getto Gulyas is the best restaurant whem comes to flavor, quality, service, overall actually. We still in Budapest and some other places we've tried didn't offer the same good food and service, we eat 3 dishes and 1 big lemonade for 26 euros only.
I will be going to Budapest later this year and have been watching all your videos for research. So excited to try out these foods!
Happy to hear! I hope you'll have a great time here and will enjoy the food as well 😊
This is a great video, and very entertaining. Well done!
Great...now i am hungry! 😊
that was the goal😂
Followed just about all of your recommendations for food over the last few days (in Hungry now). You rock! We also took your advice and ate at Retek Bisztro TWICE. OMG it was amazing. Thank you thank you thank you!!! To anyone visiting grab a reservation to Retek and GO!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you are having a good time 😊 Wow, Retek Bistro twice, glad to hear you enjoyed it so much 😊
Just came back from Budapest ( my husband’s home country).
Thank you my daughter is on her way to Budapest
I hope she'll have a lovely time here in the city 😊
Yes, show more Hungarian food videos! 🌻👍
Jó ez a kis hunglish, ment a like! :)
Köszike! :D
I rented a room in a families house: and they made eery day Letcho with Eggs aside as Breakfast - it was soooo good.
I tried goulash was so good
Lángos, mátrai borzaska, gulyás - all of them are favourites.
The food is so good. I need to try all of it. Frici papa is a great restaurant 👌
It is. You can tell if a restaurant is good, if it has a lots of locals in it :) Frici papa is one of those
Great videos. Where are some good places for libamaj? I have had it at Kiskakutt and Paprika. Kosz!
Hey there! In many of the dishes the onions are cooked to the point where they are completely broken down, so you'll barely feel them 😊 Paprika flavor will be more prominent in many of these 😊
Love your Hungarian food list. I would add töltött paprika and bécsi szelet.
Oh yeah, those are really tasty as well 😊
I am a Hungarian, and I don't like Hungarian cousine. But you made me hungry with these nice little videos of these traditional ones. Good job! ;)
Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
BEST food for Me in Hungary-BONE MARROW ,,Getto Gulyas,, 😙😋🤤
Dziekuje! That is indeed a tasty one :)
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures👍🙂 Köszönöm ✌
If you ever visit Budapest you must try Krumplis Langos by Vaci Street because they put a potato to Lángos just like a grandmas
Lecso is definitely a top 5 dish, and requires good Hungarian peppers. Substituting bell peppers is OK, but not the same.
I totally agree with you 😊
I love the list of Restaurants you provided. I want to visit all of them. Any other list of good Hungarian restaurnts?
Hey there! We don't have another list unfortunately, the one in the description is already very long, but whenever we find something new that we enjoy we'll surely update the list or feature those in our future videos :)

I really need a list written down, so I can check it on my trip to Budapest! 😅
Thank you for your great videos🇭🇺😊
Having stayed in Pest this week we can definitely agree and disagree with some recommendations here for those planning on coming soon. Kifőzdé restaurants are hardly open on weekends so don’t expect to easily find one, or they’ll only be open for lunch with average set menus, rarely the big ticket food items. At night they double/triple prices and frankly the service was poor and quality was to the point we didn’t finish our meals at Papa Frici for example. Keep in mind these prices also don’t reflect service charges which range from 10-15% which are auto added to final bills.
Retek Bizstro was obscenely priced
Your recommended Belvárosi Disznótoros was brilliant, but one place not mentioned: Hungarikum Bizstro - that was excellent (bit expensive at 14/15,000ft) with live music and attentive staff and insanely good food.
😊 Thanks for the encouraging comment about what we do 😊
Great video
Matrai badass 🤣😆
maybe after this, Restaurants will change the english translation in on their Menu 😂
Did you ever post the other food video? Especially traditional desserts !! Please
Thank you so much for the Support! :) it will take some time to make a part 2, which will be about food that are probably lesser known and popular like the ones here. However regarding Desserts and sweets we have a recent video that covers that sweet topic 😊
As a Hungarian, thanks for this. Now I’m going to go and make some gulyas.
Jó Étvágyat :)

hola,,,i will travel with my friends from Mexico and USA for second time to Budapest....i would love if you can give us the name of some Local Restaurants,,,no fancy ones,,,but delicious and not so expensive.....Thanks....i like a lot this video
Hey there! Thank you for the message! We have a few restauranat recommendations in the Description of the video. 😊
There are a lot more Hungarian dishes that are good also.
Main course: paprikás krumpli, székely káposzta, Milánói sertésborda, vadas marhaszelet/sertésszelet, rakott krumpli.
Desserts: rétes, gesztenyepüré, madártej, zserbó
I think street food video would be good. Food carts are easy way to try a bunch different things.
Perhaps because it's a bit tedious to make, stuffing the leaves then having them simmer for long. Even here, not all restaurants have it on the menu.
@@StuffedCabbageAdventuresmaybe I lucked out in Budapest and didn’t look hard enough in Bratislava. They are definitely tedious! I think I’ve only ever had them on special occasions. Anyway, great video as always!
Where on Erszebet korut you get a good Gyro? We had a favorite years ago. Kosz!
Kosz. Majd meg probaljuk a Folgat.
How about the best Hotels for families?
Thank you. I love your videos. YOU convinced me to visit Budapest. We are into history, food, culture, politics? Advice?
There is another dish for the honor of a other writer, Kálmán Mikszáth: the Palóc goulash based on green beans, potatoes and meat.
A great place we found Szeráj Turkish Restaurant Szeráj Török Étterem. It’s Turkish food cafeteria style.
I personally am not a fan but my producer enjoys it, hope you liked it too 😊
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures thank you Akos! Now I know…by the way I am in Budapest currently. I like the dish a lot ☺️
I try always to eat everything, but i dont make it beyond the silky smooth goose liver😋😋😋😋

Where's that food market shown @ 4:53? 😊
Hey there! That's actually a Christmas Market that's only happening from mid November to first days of January on Vörösmarty square 😊

Can’t seem to find recommended restaurants.
Hi there, they are listed in the description of the video, if you copy and paste them individually to google maps I'm sure they will pop up 😊
Can you suggest vegetarian or vegan food in Budapest
People have been recommending an app called_ Happy Cow. It shows Vegetarian, Vegan etc places on a map. I have checked it out myself and I believe it's very useful to find such establishments :)
If I hate sour cream, how rude is it to ask for "no sour cream" on a dish ..and how would I say that? Lol. I'm visiting for the first time in March. I'm putting your videos to good use. Thanks
I’m going next week! And that’s my question! Haha
Nálam beindult a pavlovi reflex...👍
Any advice on where to find Mátrai in Budapest?

Hey there! That's a dough that's similar to donut and it's filled with plum jam, it's a specific item for Szatmár county where a unique kind plum is grown 😊
Any vegetarian dish for suggestion?
I've been told by my family I'm not to come back from my trip to Budapest without someone's grandmother's goulash recipe.
Man, I haven't even heard of some of these before... coming from a Hungarian
