- Join me on an unforgettable journey to Kochi during the vibrant Onam festival! As I explored the city, I was surprised to find the markets closed, but that led me to a delightful discovery. I decided to try a traditional Onam meal served on a banana leaf at a local restaurant.
The flavors, colors, and textures of this feast were a sensory delight. From the aromatic rice to the delectable curries and the sweet treats, every bite was a revelation.
Join me as I savor this authentic culinary experience and share in the magic of Onam's rich traditions in the heart of Kochi.

North East India need to be explored...don't skip that
In slums 😂😂😂
Whole India needs to be explored
@@bravo0007 There's a difference in villages n a slums ...one exists in ur head too😂
Why do North East people keep crying in comments to visit them ? 😅
@@macroking13 The fact is I'm not even from north east....still in crying to visit...😂😂
Kerala is an amazing place. It has way less traffic and a interesting culture and language. My favorite part is lots of trees even in the city. It's a very balance state and I hope it remains this way into the future.
Unfortunately it is sitting on a water bomb "mullaperiyar dam" which had become obsolete a long time ago... it will explode anytime and half of kerala will be destroyed , an estimated 3.5 milion people will die if that happens.
@@vishnus2837dei pedipikaley dei
@@vishnus2837 And govt. is doing nothing about it, just rebuild the dam. Nammak munki chavam, 2018 oru trailer mathram.
Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala and is celebrated together irrespective of religion, caste, financial status etc.❤
Nobody does harvesting during monsoon you fool. Its a Hindu religious festival celebrating Vamana Avatar and his devotee MahaBali.
that, dear friend, is EVERY hindu festival in India, everyone celebrate deepavali, holi, dusshera, ganesh chatruthi, pongal, buttakamma, basant, sankranti, ALL over the country
Onam is not a hindu festival. That was what they were saying
@@bobchill5402 Rubbish. I have never seen muslims or xtians celebrate diwali, or dusshera or ganesh chatruthi etc.
Its only hindus who foolishly celebrate christmas.
Even during Onam, they celebrate by stripping Onam of all its Hindu identity or character. Hindumisia disguised as "secularism".
So Vishnu and Vamana is replaced by his Bhakt "MahaBali" who suddenly now becomes "king of kerala". Instead of celebrating the original Vamana Avatar jayanti, they have now replace it with a caricature of a Fat botbellied "king" who is supposed to "return" on that day.
@@sriyajasmine5137 At least somebody gets it. Only Hindus have this special need to denigrate ourselves for approval of xtians, muslims and communists. This level of low self esteem and self respect is what people call "secularism". We craw when asked to bend. I am glad people are waking up.
Kerala is the home of Ayurveda..the hot water you drank is boiled water with herbs and is good for digestion❤
Kerala means the land of coconuts... Bananas and sweet jackfruits and tapioca are also in plenty❤
Hey guys -
Hope you guys enjoyed this Onam video.
Just wanted to let you know that I posted this video in Kerala out of chronilogical just to show my Onam celebration experience, as it just happened recently.
The order of my journey was Delhi > Kashmir > Delhi > Himachel Pradesh > Kerala.
I’m still in Kerala exploring all that it has to offer. I’ll be posting the remaining Vlogs in order from now on so the vlogs after this one are from Himachel Pradesh then the remaining Kerala videos will be uploaded after that.
Much awaited video. Only UA-camr to show culture of India waiting for navaratri Dusshera in gujrat 15-24 oct ❤
On deepawali all over india will be lit up and you will have lifetime experience❤
Not in Kerala. Onam is the biggest festival here. The lights festival here is Kartika deepam.
Your friendly and upbeat nature is very inspiring

Feel very sorry for your situation Phil but you managed it well and really loved watching the video. Couple of observations from this video that I would like to share (suggestions):
1) Its okay to ask for a spoon and may be a fork instead of being uncomfortable while eating food because you come from a different culture where people use spoon and fork to eat certain food items which is perfectly alright, just like how people ask for a fork and spoon if they cannot eat the chinese food items like noodles and sticky rice in China using chop sticks which is again perfectly alright.
2) Listening to the conversations you had with people in this video there is a lot of misunderstanding like the keralites were unable to understand your accent or english language in general and gave wrong answers because they couldn't either understand english or your accent, so next time if you feel the other person is unable to understand your question or if he doesn't speak the language you either get in touch with another person who understands and speaks english well or you use Google Translator.
3) If you really wanted to eat your food with your hand then you shouldn't have listened to the gentleman who advised you to eat with your right hand as he does not know you are a lefty and you would not be disrespecting the food or the traditions in any way if you use your left hand, as anyone who is a right handed person cannot use his/her left hand for the purposes he/she uses his/her left hand for and vice versa.
Enjoy your stay in India. God Bless. 👍🙂
If people don't understand something, they should either ask for clarification or simply say, "I don't know," rather than providing misleading information.
He definitely needs to up his communication game.
Yes, what this guy said... Second that
Agreed good advice for Phil. Don’t be afraid to ask for cutlery and don’t always think locals are giving you the right information.
From tulyan lake pahalgam u jumped direct to kochi, amazing😂
Haha without showing the last day and giving reviews .I m surprised too hehe
I would go visit the rest of Kashmir Valley and Gulmarg and Pahalgam again if I was Phil because the weather is cool right now and definitely not a burning hot 🥵 31 degrees like Kerala
If you are in South Don't miss world famous Mysuru Dasara... It's an yearly event from 15 Oct, 2023 - Tue, 24 Oct, 2023 celebrated around Mysore palace...
'The God of Small Things' is a postcolonial novel set in Kerala. I had to read the historical context when writing my literature essay and I found out some interesting facts about Kerala.

If you are in India, you must visit beautiful places like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Lakshadweep.
Rajasthan too

IMO the westerners come to India not for beautiful sceneries but to experience India's culture, traditions and way of life.
Lakshadweep would be very close to where is at currently... but there's soo much to see in Kerala first, and not to mention, the foods to try.
Ganesh Festival and dahi handi festival is coming in next week.. don't miss this chance. Come to Mumbai to experience this festival.. youll love it... Dhai handi festival is on 7th sep and ganesh festival will start from 21 i think

Yes it is a poignant tale about King Mahabali
Read about the Vaman Avatar of Lord Vishnu

Currently king Mahabali resides in the netherworlds and is allowed to visit Kerala his erstwhile kingdom once a year to be among his people.
PS: Since you are in Kerala - it is right next to the Scotland of India Coorg - visit Vythiri resorts in Kerala and then Coorg and also pay a visit the the Nagarhole Tiger reserve where you will see wild tigers and tuskers (elephants)
I follow so many travelers/vloggers especially foreigners and everybody talks about Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other south Indian city. You should come to Indore. Indore is very clean and it's known for humble and polite people. Hey Phil, glad to see you in the South though. I have been living in the Canada for last few years and absolutely crave Indore food. Indore has recently developed a reputation for being a clean city and the effort that people of Indore make to keep that reputation is incredible.
BTW, 56 Dukaan is very famous for its varieties of Indian food. You should visit. Indore is in the central part of India in Madhya Pradesh.
Every part of india has its own essences....every state has its uniqueness
Nice vlog❤
Love from kashmir
We meet at smart city srinagar 🎉
kerala is clean because it rains most of the time and its not dusty but its hot n humid all the time..
During 2018 and 2019, there were major floods in Kerala and later for the past three years from 2020 till 2022 due to covid and the unfortunate deaths, Onam celebrations were minimal. It is the cultural and harvest 🌾 festival of Kerala so by God's grace we are able to celebrate it grandly this year alongwith our families who have come down from abroad ❤..hope you have the best time in Kerala..do interact with the locals they are extremely hospitable, helpful and friendly
You are so simple and pure which earns my respect. (Earned a subscriber)
Be careful of the exploitation which will happen to you if you give them a chance.
A Keralite.(Kochi) ❤
Kerala the friendliest and safest place in India ❤
Oh really!! I have a serious doubt though. Why kochi is third among the 19 cities in the crime per lakh people? Why highest crime rate against ST? Why so many politically motivated crime news comes from there?
@@Kuttanaadan Oh man! You seem to be living in 90s. Please remain updated. UP is India's top 5 state with highest investment. If it's so called gunda raj, why it's investor's top 5 favorite destination. Which position is Kerala in investment wise? Let it be it's so called 100% literacy. 😜 After yogi's arrival as CM of UP crime against women has drastically fallen as seen in NCRB reports. The rate of crime against women: Kerala (73.3%) with more than 13k cases whereas UP (50.5%) with approx 56k cases. Population of 3 cr has so many cases then think of UP which is 8 times your state. UP police have created special all women PAC battalion, integrated control centre, installed CCTV in more than 15k places covering major cities, allocating huge budgets for women safety. Due to encounter against mafias, dons and criminals whom were previously supported by previous socialist and left ecosystem, UP has became the prime location for investment. I my opinion, you should visit every state or province and UT's of India
There is a place where heaven meet earth in Kerala panchalimedu (Idukki )
phil bro in india the tradition is to use right hand for eating and all good things like giving blessings or handing over a gift. coz left hand is used in bathroom for cleaning and back in the old its treated as unclean and will make u sick, so people in asian countries use right handonly for eating ..
main thing on onam day is onasadhgya, also called onam lunch meal. Hope you would be lucky next time to be able to be invited ito someone's home to enjoy it. most keralites celebrate day time of onam spending with their families and enjoy onamsadhya.
cheers
Phil, are there trusted, English speaking host families that you can meet with and stay with instead of being clueless about everything? Someone who can explain everything to you. What the dishes are during Onam and the customs. South Indians for the most part don't just talk with random strangers. I've also noticed that they tend to be more reserved.
India is in developing countries phil what you expect, it is fastest growing economy tho maybe after some years people will keep country clean ❤
Happy onam

if you are a left handed person you can eat with your left hand thats perfectly fine just tell them you are left handed..they will know your right hand is reserved for other..
Thank you in Malayalam is 'Nanni'
if your left handed, then you can use your left hand. Its not a rule for foreigners. In fact its a customary habit. Back in the day, people used one hand for cleaning , so they wouldn't contaminate their food, it then became a habit. it was hard watching you eat w the wrong hand. I wished someone said that you can use either hand, especially a foreigner cause that custom doesn't apply. oh well, next time. But yah, hey, did you try katcha morea, or pollicherry or yellow curd? that goes well with the rice.
From Tulian lake to direct Kerala. Why you skipped rest of Kashmir

Phil.. So sorry to watch you getting tortured. ;) Its like a painted stork served a delicious meal on a shallow plate. (he will see and smell, but not be able to taste it because of his long beak). But you are correct, it is about etqiquette and eating with the right hand is still often taught to small children even if you are left handed. You know the reason? The left hand is used to clean the oval office business (lol, you know what I mean?), hence it is prohibited to use for eating :D. ...BUT.....I'd say if you are lefty, eat with your left hand. Important is to enjoy the food.
And yes, come to Pune on 28th Sept, for Ganesh visarjan procession. It will be the biggest festival you will see on the streets. I think you will be overwhelmed and go crazy.
India is very differentiate society.
ha also wished someone spoke English , and sat with you and explained a few things. I think that family didn't speak English .... Congrads on trying the proper meal for Onam
He came allover to Kerala just to make this one video? That's crazy. I wish he stayed atleast for one month.

I think the tourist destinations and other places which the people recommended to Phil, he never visits them. 😂😀😅
Onam is the festival that celebrates the birth of One of Vishu's Avatar called "Vamana" or "Drawf". You might know other avatars such as Sri. Krishna and Sri. Ram etc.
There are 71 MahaYuga (GreatAge) before the "End of Time" and we are in the 24th MahaYuga. Sri. Ram was in the 21st Yuga, and Krishna was in the 24th Yuga. Vamana was in the 7th MahaYuga. I mention this so that you get the time perspective. (Each MahaYuga is 4.3 MILLION Years)
Story is about the Asura king MahaBali (great Strength) who conquered two realms (Earth & "underworld") and wanted to conquer the 3rd realm of the Demi-Gods called "Sawrg" (Heaven). He was the grand son of one of Vishnu's greatest devotee, Asura King Prahalad. Vishnu took another Avatar called "Narasimham" (ManLion) to protect Prahalad.
Asura live in the "underworld", Humans/Manav live on Earth and Devta (demigod) live in "heaven".
MahaBali conducted a Huge Yagna (mistakenly called "sacrifice") to conquer heaven. So Vamana came there in the form of a Brahmin boy and begged for Alms. King MahaBali coul not say No and being a generous king granted him any wish of his choice without even asking him. But Vamana said he only wanted 3 feet of land in which he coul be cremated once he was dead and once grante that wish, Vamana grew into a "giant" who covered the whole cosmose and his 1 feet covered the earth, the other covered the "underworld" and when asked where to keep the promised 3rd step, the king offered his own head since that was the only thing left that he still owned. Pleased with this Vishnu blessed him eternal life as king of a doman known as "suta loka" and declared that in the next Yuga, he would be the king of Heaven i.e. the next Indra (king of demi god). MahaBali's only request was that he be allowed to visit once's every year to check up on his subjects and that wish too was granted. Though this visit happens during Mahalaya i.e. the day before Diwali, in recent times Kerala hindus also celebrates this during Onam.
സ്വാഗതം 🙏🏼.
You might have to go to another restaurant for Onam sadhya.

If u really can't eat with hand then you can ask for spoon. But you will face difficulty with spoon also because its rice and curries.
i also find it difficult to eat it with right hand, but I don't wanna tho ! i eat it with left anyway duh
I think "Nani" means thank you in the local language.
Its not compulsory to eat with right hand , the skill of eating sadhya will be developed later on , instead of eating each item u need to mix each dish with pappadam and rice ,later sweet payasam and at last u can try rasam and buttermilk and finish sadhya.
