Men usually remove shirt to show respect to the lord before entering Kerala Temples. The main idol of lord is kept in sanctum sanctorum which is different from altar. Devotees should pray to the lord by circumambulating in clockwise direction. Photography is not allowed inside due to security reasons. Each temple has its own customs.

I'd say dressing codes are purely based on the the traditional way people living in Kerala used to wear their dresses
Male usually wear a dhoti and nothing in the upper body due the humidity and hot climatic conditions and may be they just don't feel its needness

    Hey Phil,
I am really sorry that there was no one to help you with the proper route where the festivals were taking place in Kochi during Onam.
Basically I am from Kochi, Kerala. And actually this year Onam was an energetic and enchanting one. Its okay that you missed this time but i hope next time you wouldn't surely miss it.
Btw, We take of Shirt inside temple to show respect to Lord Shiva, where we place the god inside the temple premises. Thats the reason why they informed you to remove the shirt before entering the proper premises of the temple. Kerala is called - "Gods Own Country", where we respect gods like anything. And Hinduism is a vast and oldest religion in the world, so in India each state you go and each and every temple you visit, there will be different rules.
    In Kerala,
Some temple like Devi Temples, we dont have to where Mundu (you saw that, one of your taxi drivers where wearing it, and thats called Mundu). And as i said, for Devi temples we can where jeans and for Lord Shiva temples we can wear jeans and thats not a problem but you need to take of the shirt to show respect to the god.
And for Lord Krishna temples in Kerala, you can't wear Jeans or Trousers, You can only wear a "Mundu" (the thing that we were under our lower body) and the shirt should be removed. (This is how it works for Krishna Temples)
Hinduism is just not a religion it teaches us about Nature and Culture.
    Thanks and Regards Mate.
    Love from Kerala. 😊

Ved and a-ved (boudh, jain, charvak) both are sanatan. Famously called as sindhu (hindu) river civilization or Indus (India) river civilization. Collectively called as Sanatana dharma. Eko devah sarvabhuteshu goodah. One god resides in everyone and everything, takes any names and any forms, he is also formless and also infinite. As for the disciple is the god.

You should eat by left hand btw I am also left hander and I have experienced same. Your understanding about why they were asking to eat from right hand is peefectly correct. Next time simply tell them that you are left hander and do all your work with left hand. I have not seen a vlogger like you who is completely natural. Hi Phil, about your query
According to ancient Indian tradition, the mind as well as body should be pure and simple while visiting a place of worship. In fact, a temple is not a spot where one can show off wealth or attire. Everybody needs to realize that we are nobody before God.
While visiting a shrine, devotees ideally should wear the simplest dress in the most proper manner. It is based on this concept that certain temples prohibit devotees wearing trousers from entering the inner precincts. The devotees are required to be clothed in ‘mundus’ here.

Carved conches are considered holy in the South Indian temples. If you keep such a conch near to your ears you can hear the sound of the ocean. The air column within the conch resonate that way. While blowing the conch the sound of the universe “ Om” you can hear. While doing puja for the diety , the conch is being blown by the Poojari.
It is believed that God enters into a man’s heart through his chest and into the heart of a woman through her face. That is why men are asked to remove the shirt.
Temples are not considered as a place of worship. It is considered as the diety’s home. So depending on the diety , different customs should be followed at different temples.

There aren't typically any traditional public 'Onam Parties' in Kerala. The celebrations are usually on the weekend before or after the actual date, the ones organised by communities, offices, schools etc; and on the actual date most people spend time with their family at home. Probably why it was difficult for you to find any celebration of sorts...Still great to see you explore the State. Hoping to see you in person someday ✨ Wishing you a wonderful time here 🤗

    It's a Shiva Temple 🙏
    Deity is known as Ernakulathappan.
There are many things to explain, but we cannot explain it one youtube comment..
Before entering hindu temples in Kerala,
We should strictly follow PanchaShuddhi (5 types of Cleanliness).
We should wear White Mundu(that white long cloth) as bottom wear.
We should not wear shirt or any top wear, because we need to receive energy.
The inner house is the Sanctum Santorum where the deity is installed. The priest and devotees energize the idol of deity and surroundings through sounds(reciting mantras), light, fragrance, water, etc. Devotees recieve energy through body(upper body) from bottom to top. It's related to Chakras in our body.
In ancient times, both men and women in Kerala do not wear top, they gives priority, in an order of
    1. Dharma
    2. Artha
    3. Kaama
    4. Moksha
Temples are the place related to Dharma. Ancient times people are strict about moral(dharmik) values.
You are lucky to enter this temple.😊 Because non-hindus are still not allowed to enter hindu temples in Kerala, because of past attacks and incidents while european rule and sulthan rule.😶😶
Anyway you have a divine aura with you, that's why good people like you reach in front of deity automatically without any planning.
    🕉️ Om namah shivaya 🙏❤
    God bless all 🙏

Actually CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. The government is pushing towards this fuel because this is cheaper, efficient and way less polluting than petrol. In India most of the public transport vehicles have shifted to this and the remaining are shifting. You see those public city buses all across India, most of them run on CNG. Even the auto-rickshaws which foreign tourists call tuktuks (by the way, we Indian call them autorickshaws ('auto' in short) all across the country because they are automatic as compared to pedal rickshaws that we had in the past) run on CNG to cut pollution. Also, now-a-days in almost every Indian town, village and city you will find battery rickshaws. There are also public buses which run on batteries in various cities like Chandigarh, Pune, etc. Apart from these, we are mixing 20% ethanol in petrol to make it less polluting.

Phil it's kinda hard for us to understand your Scottish accent lol so most of the time they have no clue what you are asking.
Also yes we use the right hand because we use the left hand to wipe our arse and as per the sadhya etiquette, you have to eat it with right hand. Even the lefties here usually learn to eat with right hand just because of that.
We use banana leaves because it's been used as a plate from ancient times as banana trees are there at every home backyard.
Olden times there weren't these many dishes because most of the vegetable we use these days came from Europe, south America etc during colonial period so sadhya wasn't always these many items. But these days you can add whatever you want like the nonveg items the uber guy made at his home.
But it's fine as you can always ask for a fork or spoon or spork to eat it.
Also we take off our shirts inside the temple mostly because we weren't wearing any shirts back in the days. Shirts were only worn after the colonialism because our climate is mostly hot and people were only covering their bottom parts back in the days. So wearing the shirts is kinda disrespectful inside the temple because you have more clothes than the god himself. You are supposed to appear as poor as you can infront of the god. You aren't supposed to look better than the god who made you. And they do not allow cameras inside also non Hindu aren't usually allowed inside.
But in north Indian temples you can wear whatever you want because they have been wearing shirts from ancient times because of their climate.

Deity is consecrated in sanctum sanctorum, so it is considered a disturbance for the deity to capture video there. Besides, Its a serious place for devotion where people commune with deity, so they don't want to promote it as tourist location.
Kerala temples are very strict regarding the agama shastra and follow tantric rituals to the dot. Removing shirt is all part of that.

In this way farmers are also getting benefitted by selling there residues and crops like Sugarcane as well for ethanol production.

    Things to improve-
You went to kerela without being prepared- what are the places to go in Cochin, where is the snake boat at etc. you don’t give viewers interesting sights- your channel won’t grow. It should be a combination of well planned and unplanned adventures to get views
    2. Among many vloggers- I saw that your communication skill needs a lot of work- people are having a very hard time to get you and you cannot decipher out what the people are saying when they speak in an accent or use broken English.
    3. When you ask questions- your eyes should be able to spot who is college educated and who is not- hence who can you communicate with to get accurate information
I have travelled from east Asia to Europe. My eyes are extremely quick to spot who could potentially be college educated and by that who can I communicate with for a more accurate communication

Shabrimala have different origin, different customs than the usual temples in Kerala. Shabrimala predates the Brahmin migration to Kerala and some historians say it has tribal origins. Also, ideally you go into Shabrimala only after taking the 42 day preperation, where you become swami therefore rules are light regarding attire.

    Thanks for uploading!
Hindu Sanatana Dharma / Hindu Dharma and Bharat that is India is a living civilization (the only one that is left on the planet to survive against the onslaught of Abrahamic religions! I may sound rude here! I have very many practicing Christian and muslim friends as individuals and families! But we openly discuss about these things and accepted to have our views and opinions!!
Subject matter is very wide! But my 2cents!
Hindu Sanatana Dharma Temples are conceptualised in layout and content to replicate innher body system of human beings.
These Gods are NOT Gods as perceived in Abrahamic religions! These Gods are Deities or Murthys of Specific Devaas (or self exuberant entities capable of bestowing blessings to devotees who can connect with LOVE (not out of fear!). These dieties are invoked in to the specific Murthy (Englishman's Idol) by way of procedures prescribed in Vedas (using specific Mantras and methods). Once sanctified, the place is open to devotees, whosoever wants to connect with the specific Deity and seek blessings.
Idea is to create a physical system that stimulates the mind to connect to the divinity invoked in to the Deity /Murthy in the form of energy chakras (or energy centres) similar to human body.
During the worship that was going on (on your left as you were coming out) with the priest moving the lamp in front of the Diety, the loud noise is to stimulate the lower level chakras of the devotees and lesser loud but higher pitch sounds stimulates the higher chakras and the one in the hands of the priest is designed to give the sounds to stimulate the devotees top three chakras (out of the 7 chakras within the body). Thus enable devotee to remain focussed and to connect with the divinity being invoked in the Deity!.
The outermost circle in which you moved around is supposed to represent your gross body - where the loudest of sounds are heard, and there is second inner circle which represents subtle body or astral body-where less loud but higher pitch sounds are played and the third inner circle is where ONLY priests move around (that they remain in a bit of a meditative state - knowingly or unknowingly)! Usually, in most of the temples, devotees are not allowed to cross in to second circle! Third inner circle, no temple permits devotees! Reason is that certain energies once disrupted in those circles, restoring becomes a painful / prolonged process!!
About taking out your clothes (for gents ONLY!): This is my guess!!
No one is supposed to be visiting without taking at the least one bath for the day plus addl bath post to any serious ablutions!
Women are considered to have been bestowed with better perceiving ability and better capacity to connect to Deities. So, no bars for them up to second inner circle.
Where as men need some action to 'bring to awareness of the place/ongoing process' to stop other interactions and become focussed! And removing shirt will ensure that they remain focussed!
    Why Camera Not Allowed:
    1. Devotees 'just curiousos' will be busy taking photographs that distracts/disrupts the ongoing processes / build up of ambiance for the worship. And in turn it disrupts the subtler level of communication between the energy centres of the devotees and the Deity.
    2. Historically, most of the vandalisation of the temples took place after recce by those who planned and vandalised the temples!! If you research you will come to know!!

You have a question that why you are not allowed to film inside the temple. Answer is you can always film but in temple's corridors and cannot film in front of God because you are there to prey only. Filming is very very inappropriate and indecent behaviour. In some temple you cannot film at all because of security reasons. Your next question is in regard to taking off shirt? So I suggest you can ask temple staff. According to me it will be the way of praying in this temple.

It’s something similar to Azan. Usually temples in Kerala closes for Pooja (A ritual the main guy perform with the deity). In the past, Ringing bell signifies that the Pooja is over and the temple is open for the public for prayers. It’s mostly around 6 in the evening daily. Still they follow the same customs. These varies from place to place. There’s no standardised procedure for temples Ig. Kerala, the culture is very different from the north.

@@akashravi2209 Right, there is a call to prayer (Azan) five times a day to remind locals that the prayer is going to be started soon. Usually, there is a gap of 15 minutes between Azan and Namaz.
But I have seen in movies and videos that Hindus ring the bell when they enter into temple. That's why I asked about it.
