My buddy is a big Toyota guy. He bought a new 2022 tundra. Rear differential failed at 20,000 miles. And now the engine is being replaced. He’s not happy
My biggest problem with the Toyota is the fact that it looks like a science project, or like it's not fully rendered in. I love the looks of the Ram, just worried about the long term reliability of the Hurricane.
my 2024 Tundra non-hybrid 'BARELY' stop/starts - almost always keeps the engine running. Unless you press the brake extra at the stop light, the engine doesn't shut off. I average 17MPG in city, and 20MPG on the highway.
So a few things to note: On the fuel economy number, the Ram has a few tricks up its sleeve, despite a 3.92. The truck remains the most aerodynamic, in terms of shape and active aero(grille shutters, deployable spoilers,). Also, the ZF has such smart shifting that it doesnt need the add'l two gears of the Toyota. And whats interesting with this test is that the Ram was at a further disadvantaged due to the tow mirrors acting as sails as well. The Toyota is a good truck, but I do wish Toyota address many of its shortcomings, mainly the much known build quality issues, 24s still having engine issues, no tow hooks at all, a single-speed transfer case(in a $70K+ pickup in 2024?), tight cab in comparison to the Big 3, the fake engine noise(I know they're wanting to sound like a 5.7, but it will never be one), and refreshing of the front end. I still havent warmed up to it.
The best way for Toyota to fix their current gen tundra is to drop the v6 shit turbos and put their v8 back in it. Their build quality has gone to shit. It’s all hype.
For the decibel testing: To eliminate as much inconsistencies I would test it at the same speed on the exact same road. Side note: I believe the tundra would have been a bit quieter with the sunshade in its fully closed position.
I’m a Toyota fan. I drive a Lexus and had 2 tundras in the past. I drove a Ram 25’ 1500 Hurricane HO Limited, 24’ Power Boost Platinum, and a 25’ Tundra 1794 Hybrid. The Tundra was my least favorite driving truck.

The straight 6 gives a lot of room to work on either side. The 3.0 Duramax is a good engine, especially if you are towing. Otherwise, it is expensive with not much benefit.
Toyota needs to work out all the kinks because it’s too good to fail. They need to work on interior quality also. I don’t need everything to be leather but I do need it to be solids and not cream and have the center console move around
Good review. Also, the rear gears vs mpg is not as big of a deal nowadays. There’s a point where if you’re turning the engine too slow it’s not as efficient. It was a bigger problem in older engines and when transmissions were 3 and 4 speed. Try it sometime in a Ford f150 where you can select the gears. Hold a speed and cycle down through the gears. You can watch the instantaneous mpg to see for yourself. I’ve done it with a couple different trucks now. At 80 mph, you see almost no mpg difference. At higher speeds, 10th gear is ever so slightly less mpg (if you can get the truck to hold 10th). Try it for yourself sometime, don’t take my word for it. 👍🏻👍🏻
You can customize the right side of the gauge cluster in a Tundra to show the boost pressure, engine oil temperature, and transmission fluid temperature. They are calling it "Tow gauges" display.
