Had mine for 3 months, traded in after two check engine lights at 3,623 miles
Bye bye!!!
What was the reason for the check engine lights
@@dor1tomcswagger69 misfiring cylinders twice. To be honest with you I actually really liked the truck. I own 4 trucks F350 dually, Chevy 2500, Nissan Titan and the new ram, but with it giving me the two check engine codes in under 4000 miles I just wasn't wanting to draw the odd card and run it back forth to the dealer and I got more for a trade then I paid for it. Netted 2400 bucks after driving it for a few months so I just got rid of it. No other issues than that though, just didn't wanna take a further risk especially after getting more than I paid for it. Truck was nice and quiet, smooth driving, had some get up and go and got pretty good gas mileage. Speaking with the service tech he said it hasn't been uncommon for the check engine light to be kicking in pretty early but nothing catastrophic they've seen, just more of a nuisance. I'll probably pick up another one in a couple years for the farm if there isnt any further crazy issues reported over the next couple years
I've had mine for over seven months and 7,000 miles. So far no issues knock on wood.
Shocked
Great job! I've been waiting for this video. The Hurricane is impressive.
Man these RAMs have really stepped up there game from what they use to be.
Great video JB. I’m very happy to hear you call out the size and type of trailer as being more important than just the weight! That is something hardly any reviewers ever do. And it shows with the consumers because everyone is just concerned about the weight.
Anyways, you should have just said if you’re planning on towing just get an HD lol. These half tons are good for open trailers and smaller boats but anything enclosed and you’re really pushing them.
And once again this shows that power is not the problem nor has it been the problem for half tons for atleast 15 years.
Gassers don't "hold back" on a down-hill. They will normally down shift, but there's not enough compression/ back-pressure to hold back. Most cars and trucks are designed to freewheel for better fuel mileage.
Even diesels freewheel, that's why they have exhaust/Jake brakes added.
If you put the ram with the zf trans to eighth gear manually it puts the trans in a sportier setting also takes off cyl deactivation and it engine brakes a lot more on grades some Ram owners say it's sport mode I say tow mode but it's a mystery 😂
Thanks for your efforts and good video keep doing towing vids
Thanks for the testing. We definitely need the ability to use engine brakimg for going downhill.
Thanks for the video JB. You are correct to get the air ride on these Rams, it is worth the investment.
Eco diesel on tfl only had one brake application with the ZF.
I’m definitely interested in one of those Rams.
Great video JB! Hurricane FTW all day long over Hemi!
It has the power the question is does it have the longevity to match?
I hated pulling a 5,000 lbs NoBo trailer with my 2019 Ram 1500. Love driving half ton trucks but that ship has sailed for pulling much. I switched from Jeep to a used Suburban for my daily driver. That’s my half ton. And I’m not gonna tow much with it.
These Hurricane motors are badass. But people that really pull shit know the deal.
They actually tow really nice. All their torque is made low in the rpm range like a diesel. I can tow a 14’ heavy duty landscape trailer and two large 4x4 quads plus a bed full of gear and cab full of people and get an average of 17-18 mpg. The problem is they say they can tow an insane amount of weight but in my opinion from experience a half ton truck doesn’t weigh enough to be towing over 10k. If towing around that much get a 3/4-1 ton truck and diesel you’ll feel much safer and more confident while trailer in tow. I pulled a 12k trailer with a 1 ton for years I couldn’t imagine doing it with my f150.
My comment was definitely geared more towards towing travel trailers with 1/2 tons in general. And I agree, 1/2 tons are fine for pulling a bunch of stuff. But the sway with travel trailers at highway speeds freaks me out. I guess what I was saying is I just feel so much safer with the HD’s - I live in Oklahoma (windy) and I feel better pulling 31’ and 10k in the wind with my HD than I did on a calm day pulling that 20’ NoBo on I-40 at speed.
5k should not feel heavy in a full size truck
It didn’t really feel heavy - the power was there for sure - it was the sway at high speed when semis would pass or it was somewhat windy. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world but compared to the experience you get in an HD, it’s night and day.
@@carltuckerson7718 I towed my 5500 lb travel trailer all around the western US with my F150. 25000 miles in 6 years. I never felt unstable pulling even in 30-40mph winds. Now I'm pulling the same trailer with a Lexus LX570 with a tiny 112" wheelbase and have put almost 5000 miles towing on it in 10 months. Same deal. No issues at all with stability. I even pulled that same trailer a few times with a GX460 with a 109" wheelbase and that did pretty well.
It sounds like an issue with your particular setup. A 5000 lbs 20' trailer should be relatively easy for a half ton.
I have a 15' Ram Hemi SB (coils), 6.4 Gaser and pull an overall 34', 9k , steel enclosed, 11' tall bumper pull, about 1.2k on the hitch. I can't pull that thing on the highway over 60 mpg without sway control. Yet, I see you go up the mountain at 75 mpg and never use sway control! Do HDs handle bumper pulls that much better post 2019? My 40' GN handles lovely with the bags aired up . Thanks for the great videos!
The ZF transmission is the only thing these ram trucks have going for it. That and maybe the interior.
I have a '21 LIMITED and have 75 k miles on it. Thinking about trading it in next year. I've been curious about the Hurricane but have seen many reviews where guys just love the new engine. Thanks for the review, sounds like you were impressed. I love the sound of my HEMI but I'd rather have the torque and speed over the sound.
You should have weight distribution hitch on a trailer that size then they don’t set the truck down so far and the trailers don’t sway as bad
You can’t see around the Rv with the regular mirrors. Air leveling is the way to go. I have the eco diesel with an aftermarket air bags. Pulls 9000lb 37’ camper great.
@Jb have you thought about doing this test with the Grand Wagoneer that says they can pull 10k.
I had a 2017 ram 1500 with 5.7 . Now I own the 2500 with 6.4 Gasser , never reved to 5000 RPM , I pull an enclosed trailer with 4 wheelers and dirtbikes maybe 5000 max . My camper loaded 7500 max .
Not completely sold on the small displacement turbos . Fuel economy is no better than I get with the V8 . But soon that will be my only option.
Back in 1995 I bought a brand new Ford with a 300 in.³ in-line six. 4.9 L. It was a dog about 160 hp or something. Imagine if RAM bumped it up to about 300 in.³ and put bigger turbos injectors, etc. Nobody in the market would be able to keep up with that. I have always said an in-line six is something else. I knew somebody back in the late 90s that put a supercharger off of a 302. It was a Paxton kit onto the 300 inline 6 and it had more power than a 460 at that time.
145 hp
That would defeat the entire purpose of a small displacement turbo motor, which is to be efficient at light loads.
This new Ram is #1, can't wait to dive mine home
Shabot slalom, Jesus is Lord, יהוה למבול ישב וישב יהוה מלך לעולם
Amen.
What load range are those tires? I agree that id only want to tow heavy trailer short distances.
Weight distribution would help a lot with the stability.
Actually sounds pretty good too
JB can you recommend a diesel shop to install Banks products? Here in SLC.
Probably go up to Dave’s.
@ he won’t do it to busy rebuilding engines why I’m asking .
.
Wow that’s a heavy ball weight
If I bought one of these and was gonna keep it for the long run, I would order it with coil springs and put aftermarket airbags on it. The stock system is nice but in the long run, I don’t think it’s as good as putting a set of Firestone bags or something. Repairs down the road is insanely expensive for the stock airbag systems. And if it fails, you are screwed you have to bring it in with your truck leaning one way or the other if you blow a bag I’m sure.
Should get a weigh safe hitch so we can see the est tongue weight and how the truck reacts to it. Also nissan titan has dual convex mirrors. I know they are not making them anymore as of 2025 but the are still be sold so technically they are on the market.
If you had a weight distribution hitch on it, do you think it would have towed better?
I just don't understand why they put the tires on with the white lettterring facing the outside. That would drive me nuts!
It's a ram thing
The trucks with the sport package, night edition, and rebel have them facing out. All other trims get black walls. It's thought to give a sportier appearance hence why you see them on the sportier trims, think Nascar tires. I actually had some compliments on mine, I just hate trying to keep them white.
@@ohioguy4326 Interesting. To me it just looks like some kid at the tire shop installed the tires without paying attention to what they were doing... But I guess some people will like it.
@@randycupp5925why would the tire manufacture put white letters on the tires only to be facing the inside? That would be a waste. It is optional to face them in for those they don’t like it.
The high-output one will probably be able to do 80 if you wanted to up that hill.
Next you'll have take the 3.6 up the grade lol
I hope Tim kuniskis puts a oil dip stick back now he’s in charge of ram
Anything over 5000 lbs you should have an equalizing hitch or your going to have more squat and sway with what your towing.
But your High Mileage F250 6.2 video truck felt stronger. Maybe less weight pulled?
No wdh or sway control...😄😄😄...on passenger car tires.
But it's the coil suspension issue.
Air suspension will actually reduce your payload capacity.
Wonder why i see so many Ram air suspensions, on Marketplace ?
The 4 cylinder version of the hurricane hasn’t exactly been the model of reliability. Even the regular output version is in an extremely high state of tune for a stock engine. Most manufacturers now r8n a 1.5 3 cylinder engine (half of this engine) and they are tuned to about 180-190 hp . This is 420 hp, my concern is for longevity, this things working very hard for only 180 cubic inches. The HO model makes insane power , I guess time will tell.
The diesel mechanic I follow says its built. I put 360,000 miles on a 4 turbo as it was built in Sweden.
But its ok for a 3.0 Duramax to make 495 ft-lbs, right?
Sure would be nice if they would bring the hemi back but dont see that happening
You are crazy taking that over parlyey’s canyon.
Why? I used to drive big red Freightliners out of Salt Lake. And Eastbound I-80 is a good test of towing for any class of truck.
I hear there's a lot of changes coming to the Ram truck's since carlos Tavares got the shaft from stellantis they now have mopar Jesus back Tim so I'm going to wait and see what the outcome is going to be
What is the point of smaller engine if it doesnt improve MPG...
16... a 5.7 hemi would do that
Simple… emissions.
What's the best fuel to use with that turbo engine I have a 2022 ram 1500 but I been thinking about getting a 2025 ram 1500 Warlock
The SO engine takes 87, I'd recommend a Top Tier station though as we've seen some pull timing if the quality isn't good.
Ok thanks for the info
Manufacturers recommend 91 or better , got one last week .. Crazy story dealer filled it up , 200 miles in check engine light came on for purge valve / Gas cap code .. Couple trips to dealer no leaks reset comes back .. Finally ran 33 gallon tank out went off .. The dealers must have overfilled and it set off the evap system
But the truck rides good very smooth , I got a family and kids I’m okay with a quieter ride tbh
If you are towing consistently, stay with the hemi. More reliable technology and the hurricane needs a few more years of r&d.
❤❤❤
Stellantis is really pushing for us to trust a Tavares engine with cheap components. Why would all the automotive journalists toe the line?
to tow...without bleed fuel... you need turbodiesel
A diesel at 5,200 RPM. ~ KAABOOOM
Make sure to check your oil level… oh wait you can’t… just wait until all the recalls. I don’t trust stelantis/fiat.
I don’t not miss my hemi only because I own one, I have over 90k of tested miles, over 4k hrs tested drive miles and over 5k idle hours, mine also has the 3.92 axel ratio and 6’4 bed, I tow/haul combined around 15k every so often and even go up hills with 10-15% hill slant and have no problem after. If I put a turbo or two turbos on mine it would perform extremly well as the I6 but nty. I do need air suspension lol, now how well does it does it flex and go back into the same place like a cast iron block that handles pressure better?
👍
They are great out of the box but the real test is when they have 100k or over. The Ram will be disappointing.
And which truck wont be?
70 mph at 5,000 rpm?????
Wut?
out perform ? towing 600l0bs in my hemi 11mpg worse I ever seen is 9mpg and my 8speed shifts between 6/7 depending on the grade
So you're pulling a 6 or 7% grade at 6500' when you get 11mpg in 7th gear? 🤣
I stick with the 3.92 gears, easier on the tranny and engine and better for engine braking. You want your engine turning free and easy, a few extra rpms is a good thing and likely gives better fuel economy when towing. I have an 07 ram 1500 crew cab 5.7 hemi w/ 6' bed 3.92 gears, when towing my 18' lowboy with jeep likely over 7000 lbs. I get 9 mpg in tow haul mode 4th gear and 11.5 mpg in third which is 1:1, go figure. You should be able to manually downshift your tranny, and I personally would prefer that over computer-controlled downshifts, but then that's just me.
Trucks ride great but have no payload capacity, get bags, and still do not tow great at all. This goes for the 2500's as well. BRING BACK LEAF SPRINGS RAM! I have had plenty of 1500 and 2500 rams, these coil tricks ride nice but that's it.
tf they don't have a leaf spring you f blind the truck comes with air bags in the truck from the factory to the dealership
No, I'll stop you right there, we do miss the Hemi and I'm glad that they listened and got rid of the Fiat loving CEO Tavares. This whole thing was a flop and needs to be axed to save the the fricking company. Sales down 30% and worse than every other manufacturer and out of touch with your customer base. 3.92 Gears are a towing gear for extra low end grunt it came in handy for me quite a few times with my 2017. I will never put a 3.0L aluminum six cylinder in a 6000 lbs truck. Your also towing a v nose the wind actually rolls off better with a v-nose than a flat wall enclosed.
Not sure what you're getting at about the transmission behavior on downhills. You look like you're familiar with mountain driving - you should be using your gear limiter when heading down not pumping your brakes. My 2500 hemi will hold speed on 6% grades if I limit it to 4th gear.
Needs a dipstick.
You were doing 72 mph at 5000 rpm in 4th gear, that doesn't sound good for the engine or transmission
Why? 5,000 rpm in a 3.0 gasser probably has the same piston speed as a 6.4 V8 at 4,000 rpm, with the shorter stroke. You could go to the trouble and calculate that if you wanted to, but I can’t be bothered.
Great video JB. I’m very happy to hear you call out the size and type of trailer as being more important than just the weight! That is something hardly any reviewers ever do. And it shows with the consumers because everyone is just concerned about the weight.
