Hi Davie, Great video as usual. I always enjoy your down to earth commentary. Lovely part of the world too. I've fly fished for 50 years, and learnt something from you today - feeding the fly line through the rod rings with the leader folded back on itself, genius! And so obvious now. Never seen that before but a great tip for those of us with failing eyesight. Fished the Usk yesterday and caught on your Impressionist dry. A great pattern when nothing obvious is hatching. Well done.
Very grateful for your voice over as always the walking tour of the river Doon complete with descriptions of the entomology and tackle makes fishing come to life Thanks David for another live tail from the riverbank Jim
Lovely to share your day on the river, Davie, thank you. I was fishing the Kennet yesterday and it was impossibly tough. Seeing all your fun with those beautiful wild brownies makes me very envious. Very nicely put together, a real breath of Scottish fresh air! Roger
Outstanding. I watch a lott of the time in bed before I go to sleep because it is so relaxing. Now I got to get myself back out fishing this week instead of tying. Again thanks for a great video.
Absolutely magical Davie. What a fantastic day, some beautiful brownies and what a size, cracking fish. Your commentary is brilliant, educational, informative and amusing. Chatting up girls on the opposite bank as well 😂 Poor old Harry wasn't getting much action, you'll have to tie him up a few flies!! Can't wait for the next video. Really appreciate your efforts 👌
Davie a think it always feels extra special like a kind of accomplishment when we catch fish on our own tied flies. All the very best 👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴
Just proves targeting rising fish can be much more satisfying and rewarding than the “chuck it and chance it “method we sometimes have to employ when there are no fish showing ,great stuff again Davie 👍
Crackin video Davie... Great lookin fish you caught and fantastic to see you getting excited over those fish you caught too as that's why we do it... Should hear me when I get a fish 😂.. That feeling never leaves ya.. Love seeing the fishing vlogs your posting, putting all those flies you tye to the test. Talking of flies.. I've still got that chadwick yarn you posted me up 10 yrs ago.. I made a shed ton of caddis pupas with it which I still use to this day on the lochs.. Look forward to the next video.. All the best, Ross 🍻
Looks like you had fantastic day on the river. Some real nice browns on the end of your line. So much fun to watch. I am amazed how similar the River Doon looks like to the Catskill rivers here in New York State, USA. The scenery is beautiful. Keep these videos coming. Excellent! 👍🏼
Really liking your river fishing vids Davie. I'm a relatively newcomer to river fishing and have a lot to learn. Im very keen to do more fishing on moving water therefore I'm learning quite a bit from these videos. Thanks! These vids are very informative indeed.
❤👍🐟🎏🎣 Wow I need to move near a good trout water.... I'm in central Texas and our only trout water is only ethically able to be fished in the winter and very early spring....
What a day! Great fishing, especially for early May. I've been out a few times on my local rivers, but they are notorious for being slow to get going early season so I'm telling myself my lack of success isn't due to my incompetence. Thanks for these fishing videos Davie, they are great.
Great video! Beautiful place..beautiful fish! Thank you for taking us along. I really enjoy these videos that show the country, and not just the fish, the walk in was fantastic. Great narration also. Have a great and blessed weekend Davie. 👍👍🎣👌 Edit: I Google mapped the River Doon, you’re approximately 4,600 miles from me in central Texas. If you ever come here I’ll take ya bass fishing. 🙂
We don’t have “ beats “ where I am. As long as a river is open to fish, you can fish wherever you want to, though there may be some closed sections on some Atlantic Salmon rivers as per the regulations. Salmon fishing rules require barbless unweighted hooks! This does not apply to trout…your choice. I usually fish a dropper and a point fly for trout on a 5/6 weight 10 ft. rod. It is windy here and you need a bit extra to punch thru it! Season opens May 15 this year..I can hardly wait! Tight lines!
A lovely day on the water for sure! A thought; do you have periods with a high number of takes followed by long slack periods over promising water? I know trout that are not satiated will feed until they are, but I wonder if there are periods of behavioral drift that you might be able to track on the river? In the Spring it seems to me that on most often the hours of 10am to 11:30am as well as 4pm to 4:30pm see sharp upticks in takes for subsurface flies. Not a rule, just an observation.
Hi David, At the beginning of the season the warmest part of the day is the best time, I normally start around 11am until 3pm depending on the weather..You can easily miss a hatch as you can be fishing a stretch with no flies showing and then walk round the bend to see flies coming off with fish rising all over the pool..I did this in the video as I walked down when there was nothing happening away from the fish I caught only to walk back up and there were fish moving all over the stream when suddenly a hatch of grannom started so I could have had a totally different day..I'm glad you enjoyed the fishing.. All the very best Davie
Hi Adrian, I got a chance today to film the wet fly I was catching so I have attached a link to it for you to see... All the very best Davie ua-cam.com/video/Sz-30Ya_QDQ/v-deo.html
Another great video Davie. At about 18 mins you catch a fish and mentioned the fly was deep and appeared to let the fish go. As a new-ish fly fisherman what is the best thing to do if a fish “swallows” a fly? Thanks.
Hi Ethan, Ayr Angling Club sell one of the best tickets on the Doon which you can fish below Patna and Polnessan as well as you can fish the River Ayr below Craigie down to the Old Bridge as well as Shankston Loch and another I can't remember it's name..It's £70 so I would certainly recommend joining this one as I know there's some really nice trout on these waters.. All the very best Davie
@@DavieMcPhail thanks for replying davie, I’ve been on Ayr angling club for the past couple of years now and your right it does have some great trout fishing. Was just recently looking for a change and thought this beat looked really nice.
And days like this might be God's way of teaching us gratitude! 👍 Thanks, Davie.

First class video as always, I note you often work downstream rather than up with your dry/dropper set up. Can you tell me why?
