Fly Fishing England - Buckingham Trout by Todd Moen

  • When I was invited by Tim Rajeff, of Rajeff Sports, to film on England’s River Esk and the historic chalk stream, River Avon, I could not resist. This is the birthplace of dry fly fishing, an area of rich traditions and history, from the sword to the modern fly rod. On this trip, I met up with Tim's colleagues from Airflo, spey casters Richard Wothers and Gareth Jones. Fishing in the shadow of castles and in brilliant green pastures, these anglers stalk and catch grayling, rainbow and brown trout, all feasting on mayflies. This film highlights the history and sacred rules of England’s famous dry fly fishing heritage. Thanks to Airflo, Patagonia and Rajeff Sports for making this film happen. It was, for me, a religious experience and one I'll never forget.

Nice scenery of the River Avon, the first place of dry fly fishing. Dry Fly fishing on a chalk stream as trout sip small flies is cool. Nice action as you hit the right day of a hatch. Sure wish we had some streams like that here. Congrats.

very cool video it's a shame the average fly fishermen doesn't get to experience this type of fishing. Most of us are limited to either fishing still waters or like you said reservoirs or lochs. This is a very elite members club, private controlled stretches of river that even if you can get on are often priced well outside the average anglers pocket and closely guarded secrets.

    • @justAfisherman1187
      @justAfisherman1187 8 років тому +4

well that's a shame marty. I hope you get to travel. If you ever get a chance to visit the US just get the cheapest fly fishing out fit you can get like less than $50 worth, head to the nearest creek and start fishin. If it's closed for fishing and a game warden happen to catch you, just tell him your story and he might even let you go. If he doesn't then just hand him the rod, shake his hand for doing his job and head back to walmart.

There's lots of accessible river fishing in the UK, it's not like a resevoir boat for the day is that cheap. yeah, there are some that are very exclusive but it's hardly the norm

marty S if you live anywhere in the north west of uk there's the river irwell and other rivers that join it. Horrible near the manchester area but upstream at Bolton holds some nice wild brown trout. People say parts of it are owned however nobody has said anything to me while I've been there. See nobody else fishing either. Me and a mate normally have the place to ourselves apart from a few dog walkers.

    • @flyman451

You and your mate probably have it to yourselves because it is private water and you are trespassing. You are just lucky the landowner hasn't called the Bobbies on you.

Todd, at 1:38 it is ok to say Scotland is the birthplace of fly fishing for salmon. That is exactly why we are leading a trip there this May! Gorgeous video! I wish you were joining us in May since we are flying into the heart of the Cairngorm wilderness in the highlands to encounter arctic char as well.

Great movie and mouthwatering scenes of trout taking flies from the surface. One important correction though, the salmon river shown is not in England! It is the river Usk in Wales. The bridge in the background is on the Glanusk Estate near Crickhowell where I fish a neighbouring beat. The trout fishing is good here too.

We have tons of it, it pisses it down with rain 364.5 days a year here, we have more freestone rivers than you can point a rod at. Price depends on where and who likes to fish-it. Look up the Wye & Usk Foundation for some amazingly cheap fishing in stunning scenery.

Lovely film, guys. The only thing I was waiting for was to watch you two culminate the session with a pint of the bitter at a country "heritage pub" or some such, trading stories about this fish, or that take, with a crackling fire in a stone fireplace in the background. Having never actually been to the UK, that's what I imagine shit to be like. Maybe it's not that way, but it would've been cool anyway! :-)

My Grandfather used to talk about Dry Fly Fishing in Yorkshire. He and his family emigrated to Canada in 1928. I just bought a hand made antique bamboo 9 ft. Fly Rod yesterday made by E. H. Nice casting, but no salmon. Here's proof even Todd Moen gets skunked ;)
More importantly though, I was shocked to learn dry fly fishing was first widely described as a technique in the late 19th century ("over a 100 years ago", according to the presenter). You know, when people were admiring early automobiles and the newly built Eifel tower. It's a modern way of fishing! Why do some people treat it as some kind of noble art form that "knights in armour" practiced, is beyond me.

No thank you. I’ll take the public access and the fishery we have here in Wisconsin, especially the driftless over those boring looking waters. They’d probably be cool if people didn’t manicure them. I love our little small trout streams all over the place and the ability to fish any of them as long as I can get in at a bridge. Last June I hiked downstream on a local river and sat down on the bank to wait for sunset and with it, the Hex Hatch. I drank my beer, listened to a podcast and enjoyed the amazing weather. The sun set and it was on. Big football sized browns came slashing out of the water all around me. I had this large pool to myself, no one else was around. I fished until around eleven and walked out, where I did bump into a few people. We talked and moved on our way. Wading in the dark can be hazardous though so be careful! lol

Beautiful little short film. My only qualm is the last song. Kind of kills what English chalk stream fishing is all about. That song would be ideal for sticking rainbows with a salmon fly in the states. In those famous stonefly hatches you guys have. But not this type of fishing. I understand it's a modern video however. And it's still great. Just kinda obstructed the vibe for me.
Not that my opinion matters , I'm no Werner Herzog, but just wanted to share how I felt. Cuz it's been nagging at me since I first saw this video. Mind you , I've still watched it 20 times . So you must have done something right ..
    Warm regards,
    Colbee.

Google flyfishingbreaks or upstreamdryfly. If you want the famous Southern England chalk streams. As you go west and north it all gets cheaper. But chalk streams like the Test, Itchen and Avon don't come cheap as the demand is very high. However, so the legend goes, the original place that dry fly fishing was invented was the Wandle in SW London. The river is still there and has been restored, if nothing as it was in those original days. I have caught many a trout in it as I live ten minutes away and it is free to fish. Back to the point though, try the Dorset Frome and stay anywhere in Dorset you'll fall in love with the whole place.
