Honestly, the reason the 10th Doctor's regeneration works so well is because of how it happens and how it relates to that particular incarnation as a whole. 10 was a Doctor that surrounded himself with so many allies and companions (Sarah Jane even comments on this at the end of Journey's End), yet he regenerates completely alone in the Tardis, with nobody there to support him. It fits so perfectly, and is so heartbreaking because of it.

Comparatively, 12's companions were all long dead when he regenerated. He'd already lost Bill and Clara, and whilst Nardol survived for a bit, he eventually died too. The tone between 10 and 12 being alone is so different, 12 seems genuinely happy to go

Second Doctor's was the end of the black and white, pulp sci-fi era, and finally answered the question "Doctor Who?". He's a Time Lord.
Fourth Doctor was more the start of a new era, leading into JNT's stuff. He was also the most beloved and famous incarnation of all time, keeping in mind relative audience appreciate factors, and global appeal. Now, the only reason the majority of American people etc really love the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors is because of the broad appeal to geek culture, and the easy access to their stuff.
Seventh Doctor's was the transition from the classic series, and the end of JNT and Cartmel's reign.
Twelfth Doctor's was the end of Moffat's reign.

31:11The DT regeneration was the best by far for 2 simple reasons 1) This was the first time we discovered that a Regeneration is a hugely traumatic event and can be thought of as an actual death, 2) The worst thing about new who is that every Doctor now needs a huge 5 min speech before regeneration to have an emotional connection and make it memorable....DT managed all that emotion in 5 words.....

    • @TheDragonaf1
      @TheDragonaf1 2 роки тому +3

@KVAcedo27 Okay, with respect to the point your making, your using 12th writing to say that regeneration is not like death. However even 13th compared the process to death. If you want to go by Mofat era writing as justification for regeneration not being death; then if we look at 11th's speech "We are all differnt people all the time, and thats okay, so long as you look back at who you used to be. I will always remeber when the Doctor was me". Even with 12th's final moment "Well another lifetime won't kill anyone, well except me. Just hold on Doctor becasue I have a few things to say to you". Even on the phone call that your referring to 11th says "The Doctor, he'sa coming". So in each case of new who (technically Eccleston also "my body is dying...not with this silly face" and even Hurt "i hope HE is a less inconspicuous" ), When the Doctor is facing regeneration they (i.e the current body) no longer see themselves to be the Doctor i.e. they see them as a separate entity waiting to be born . Thus by that evidence the process can only be compared to death and birth. As for 10th speech; the point that i was making was that its the only time you feel like the process is like facing actual traumatic grief; where as all other new Who's its a process of waiting/welcoming the other being to arrive.

i read someone explain recently why 10 got the swan song of saying goodbye to all the characters/companions he'd met along the way..........it's because it wasn't JUST 10 that was regenerating - it was the show too. It wasn't just David Tennant going (although, yes, the most popular Doctor for the modern era and Goddamn NATIONAL TREASURE, yes he was a huge part, but in terms of the sentimentality specifically behind his regeneration, not the ONLY part).
We were saying goodbye to Russell T Davies and the whole world he had created. If you need to ask "well why did he get that, no other Doctor did?!" ; it's because it was a tribute played to Russel, the man who against all odds brought it all back and made it a modern behemoth. That was the end of an era. For many....even now still, THE era. It was paying respect to the massive amount of incredible work that Russell and everyone else put into this beloved thing.
And....it's the reason it works man. It's the reason it's #1. That emotional resonance you speak of, it comes FROM that. We all knew what was happening. We all knew what it meant. We all knew it was the end. The last time for not just a truly beloved Doctor, but the entire show as we knew it......and we all cried with him.

It might have been mentioned here already but there's a regeneration missing from this list.
It's K'anpo Rimpoche's regeneration in Planet of the Spiders. It's kind of dull - a straight up fade like the 3rd - 4th regen later in the story.
K'anpo's regenerative abilities are atypical compared to other Timelords we've met, but then on the several occasions the Doctor spoke of him, both before and after Planet of the Spiders he sounds like an atypical Gallifreyan. He chose to live a basic existence up a mountain as a hermit for much of his life before exiling himself to Earth to teach Buddhist meditation. He has phenomenal mental powers - he precognitively projects his own future incarnation (called Cho Je in the story) as well as initiating the 3rd Doctor's regeneration into the 4th. The idea that a Timelord can project their future incarnation is revisited in Logopolis with "The Watcher". It's a power that's never been adequately explained in the series.

@@Hollow1984 honestly I just see it as a forgettable gimmick but then again, when it was introduced so was the sonic screwdriver, which even got replaced in the 6th Doctor's era by a sonic remote and no sonic devices were there when the daleks and cybermen first faced the first doctor, were they ruined for it? I think not, the glasses, the screwdrivers and the remote are just accessories and you shouldn't judge an actor's performance or an era of the show simply on an accessory. Yes the glasses were wacky and I can understand why you wouldn't like Capaldi if you were a fan of Smith for example but the glasses shouldn't be the reason

The effects for 10 and 11 were great and the effect for the fake regeneration in Lie if the land, regardless of it’s pointlessness, was an almost perfect effect. I have a theory about Ruth’s Doctor now. I was thinking about Troughton’s regeneration and how we don’t really see him change. I was wondering if that was just me because I don’t have access to the Classic Who episodes. Now that it’s confirmed from someone who’s actually seen The War Games, I have a pretty decent theory. Two regenerated into Ruth, which makes sense because her TARDIS is the police box. Then she did whatever it was she did and got her memory before regenerating into Three. Idk, maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m an idiot, but I was randomly thinking of it.

It's a real shame we didn't get more of Derek Jacobi as the Master on TV, his regeneration was great and it'd have been even better if we understood his character more before he went, luckily Big Finish have done quite a bit with the Jacobi Master, and holy crap is it good. If you want some great content with the Master then I would implore anyone to at the very least try the Big Finish War Master series, Jacobi's Master is scheming and evil to a terrifying degree, he can get everyone on his side before quickly destroying the trust and killing everyone.

It's all a bit of fun, isn't it? At nearly 58 ("my" doctor was Jon Pertwee, but I think I must have seen some Troughton and I certainly saw most of Tom Baker, but had gone to uni (no TV) before he left, so missed that.... anyway, I digress).
What I love about the NuWho Doctors is how thick (or amnesiac) they are. Every time they regenerate, they arrange to be flying the Tardis and proceed to blow it up and give themselves terrible trouble in the next series. Given s/he is so jolly clever, you'd have thought they'd go - ooo! about to regenerate! better park the box somewhere I can find a nice, open bit of ground on the other side of something solid so I don't blow the Tardis up (again).
Love the video; of course I don't agree, mostly because I haven't ranked them anyway, but partly because I find the NuWho regenerations so similar: I lack your professional eye, of course. :-)

If I had to choose a top one from each era I’d go for Five to Six in Classic Who, I like all the companions floating around his head and then I do enjoy Six’s first lines ‘Change my dear, and not a moment too soon’ - classic!
For NuWho it’s got to be 12 to 13, Twelve’s speech really sticks with you. There’s a nice sense of coming full circle in that we first see Twelve’s eyes in Day of the Doctor and the last we see of him is his eyes and Thirteen is revealed only in hints and parts at first - that bit with the Tardis console reflected in her eye - damn, that’s good. The awesome cinematography post regen is just, lovely. 💙
My least favourite (don’t want to say bad) are probably 7 to 8, sorry, but the morphing effect is just weird to me and the crying at the ceiling ‘Who. Am. I?’ is a bit on the nose. The General’s regeneration is also cringy because of that awful, awful line about male ego. 🤮
Mel’s regenerations also are a bit iffy, the special effects are just fine but the scenes themselves are treated with a degree of flippancy and given that both Ten and Thirteen describe regeneration as like dying and a terrifying experience it is a bit of a contradiction.
On an interesting side note, there is a fan made video on UA-cam with Twelve regenerating into Thirteen in the style of classic doctors, as its been observed that Classic Who regenerations were always laying down and in NuWho they always stand up.

    • @Schming

My head canon for the old series' different effects has always been that each different style of regeneration is the timelord body's reaction to the different form of death. It stands to reason that the process would have to be slightly different depending on what had caused the death, just as treatments of our own diseases/failures/injuries differ from case to case

Looking back years later i understand that all the big explody fire regenration stuff already happened and he wasn't resisting it, he was ready to change, so naturally it would be an easier quicker transition to the next body but i do have to agree that he deserved a transition scene, it would have been so cool seeing such different looking actors transition into each other and having it off screen sucks, 11 deserved better for that.
I love reading peoples opinion on the "sneeze" bc ive seen lots of people love how quick it was and how it barely gave you a chance to grieve and some people hate it because it lacks the slow drama, its a super divisive sneeze lol but i can see both sides

I really like John Hurt's regeneration because of the hope and contentment in Hurt's performance. Would have been nice to see Ecclestone but I consider that a nitpick. Hurt was the Doctor who suffered the most, spending centuries fighting the Time War, growing from a relatively fresh faced incarnation, as glimpsed in The Night of the Doctor, into a tired and desperate old man who just wanted it to stop, and denying who he truly was because he felt unworthy. When he finally reached the end, it's so cathartic. His traumatic past was behind him, his future was in good hands, his memories of trying to save Gallifrey remained long enough for him to regenerate before forgetting them, and Hurt managed to get that all across even without the context and buildup that other Doctor's had. I think he's the only Doctor who truly got a happy ending.

I don't think anyone would be surprised at David tennat 's regeneration being number one I mean he was given the biggest send of with so much going for it, A quick goodbye to everyone he had met and befriended, Vale Decem a song mad just for this and isn't used anywhere else ever, a slow walk as tennat struggles to get to the Tardis the only place proper for a regeneration, flying to the outskirts of earths orbit as a sort of send off that he wont be seeing it again, and then the end "I don't wont to go". If you were a kid and didn't cry you are either a Slitheen in disguise or had a heart of stone.

It was way over the top but it worked for his Doctor, and Tennant's acting was superb. Smith's speech was so well delivered and I loved that he looks straight at the camera, but the "achoo" moment took me out of it, even if the post scene is great. Capaldi's speech to his future self and his final line were terrific, and the post scene is out of this world.

One thing people don't really talk about the Second Doctor's regeneration is that the timelords executed him. "Being forced to change" is really just being executed for a timelord

If you were a kid in 1981, Logopolis would never be that low on a list like this... Still to me the most emotional...dated effects or not! The mystery of who the Watcher was such a twist at the end when watching it at the time..

If you notice about Romanna's regeneration, however, you will notice as the Doctor looks into her eyes and states, "Almost full cycle", as in saying that the actual regeneration goes through a such 'cycle', and not the twelve regenerations of a Time Lord being the 'regeneration cycle'. Just a thought that the eleventh Doctor may not have received twelve regenerations, but rather an unspecified number... as in how many regenerations would the Doctor require during the siege of Trenzelor.

Iam not sure if I was the only one who add this feeling that I don’t know why I knew that he was going to put David’s regeneration in the number spot and I love it XD
