One problem with the Master (Sacha) being stranded on Earth after the Doctor outed him to the SS as a British spy is, he must have known many occasions when an earlier incarnation of himself was on Earth. Agreed. A quick ‘as referenced in novel X or audio Y’ would have been extremely useful. Nonetheless, an entertaining and detailed overview of the Master’s chronology - thanks.
21:16 I'm not a big fan of John Simm's portrayal of the Master, but I *love* what Russell did with the character's relationship with the Doctor. We always thought the Master was hell bent on surviving, but he's not - *he's hell bent on beating the Doctor, and he'd live for a million if that's how long it'd take.* In Last of the Time Lords, the Doctor thought he knew the Master - he thought all he wanted was to live forever. But proving the Doctor wrong in dying, the Master came as close to a victory as he could. In a way, he beat the Doctor. Even if it costed him his own life, he didn't care because he won. So much better than being obsessed with immortality. Russell really transformed that character.
John Simm's Master was the perfect foil to David Tennant's Doctor. Both actors about the same age, similar build, similar energy level, similar ability to switch on a dime (or a sixpence) from dark and brooding to manic and joyful, then back to dark and brooding again. If Simm had played The Master at any other time, it would not have been so good.
Not really that idea is introduced in Mind of Evil when his fear is exposed to being the doctor laughing at him (presumably at his defeat or his plan collapsing in ot itself.)
Think about he planned if he was to loose to die and to be brought back he knew that dying was only part of his plan to mess around with him till it’s time
A good an informative video, but I would just like to correct a small mistake with the timeline. The MacQueen Master should place after the Master's resurrection by the Timelords, not before as is presented in the video. Really a minor thing, but I did want to point that out. Outside of that however, everything seems correct. Again, good job!
Recent *Big Finish* adventures show that, actually, there was _another female_ incarnation _in between_ *Missy* and Sacha’s *Master.* This female incarnation was called *The Lumiat* (for some reason), and was 100% _entirely good._ The theory, borne from the end of the _'The Lumiat'_ adventure, is that *Missy* herself, from early in her timeline (and thus still evil), disgusted by *Lumiat’s* utter innate goodness, kills her future self, causing *Lumiat* to regenerate into Sacha’s *Master* who, as we all know, reverts back to 100% evil & maniacal ways.
The eye of harmony death survival could finally have its answer thanks to the latest episode of doctor who, I'm also convinced the spy master is in between simms and Missy due to the doctor obsession and cybermen
Amazing video! (I'd say Masterful but someone already made that joke) Just one tiny thing: the MacQueen incarnation happens after the Ravenous encounter and is the first incarnation of current Regen Cycle. The decayed Beavers incarnation is finally killed by the Ravenous inside Artron's tomb on the planet Parrak. Eventually two of his future selves (Missy and War) and one of his previous selves (Eric Roberts stolen body) team up to ressurect him (with permission from the CIA) and give him a new Regen Cycle. Once the regeneration is done, Missy greets the new Master with "Hello you" wich is MacQueen's catchfrase
Very impressed with all the back story of the master and how it's been brought up to date I am a long time I'm Doctor Who fan I have been lucky enough to have met some of the actors who have played Dr Who like Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker not too sure about the new one but I have hope for the future I was born in 1965 I've and of course Doctor Who with a big part of my life if on Saturday night as a child loved to be scared by the Daleks and the Cybermen of course I would say this program went on to shape my life if I became an electronic engineer and I firmly believe there is always a way out of a problem and I also went on on to work behind the scenes of some of the comic cons I felt a little bit guilty taking money for having so much fun very impressed with your research and your website long may it continue yours sincerely big fan of yours and the program wish you the best of luck.

Going from Missy to the timeless child Master was a downgrade, really not enjoying the Chibnal era wrecking gold like Missy's character development from previous seasons.
Ok but let’s assume that simm regenerated to the spymaster and he was just like extra bad cause of what missy told simm, so that missy is a much future incarnation.
There are so many different explanations to Delgado turning into crispy master idk which one is right, theres the Susan one where he was fighting her for the matter transmutor meaning crispy is delgado, there was the Doorway to Hell one where 12 defeated him and he ended up slightly burned and mortally wounded but started to regenerate (meaning he either attempted regeneration but botched it after the comic was over because h'd already run out and ended up in the decayed body or successfully regenerated and a later body became the crispy one or regenerated into crispy) and there's the Vampire Of The Mind one (on the Tardis wiki it states the Macqueen master burned him but idk if that means burnt to that point). But in any case I though the cause of crispy was he tried to regenerate when he had none left
The two masters actually suggested that Delgado and Pratt/Beevers were two separate incarnations as when we see the MacQueen Master burn his younger self on Terserus he’s played by Geoffrey Beevers
The 14th Master hower reformed because of Covid 19 he cant be evil again and helping the Doctor destroying Valeyard it might be a coincidence but in the 3rd universe however Rani apeared again this time in her 3rd incarnation played by Jenna Coleman a possible return of Omega might be possible the question is which Doctor faced Omega first was 3rd or was 5th thats the question the 14th Master is now played by James Mccavoy here he will reappear in the Masterfull along with the rest of the Masters
Missy is always going to be my favorite version of The Master. She's the peak of that character's arch. Although I will confess that I stopped watching after the 12th Doctor, so I don't have an opinion on the 20th Master. I fully intend to get to the 13-15th's runs, but since I've regained interest in the series I've had a lot less free time (that's just part of growing up and becoming an adult and a college student though)
In Ravenous 4 Beevers master got killed by the Ravenous but brought back by the other Masters granting him more regenerations with a certain device used by Professor Artron, he regenerated into the Macqueen master though, meaning either the Roberts master was pre-crispy or Macqueen was Pre-Roberts
Roberts is still technically the crispy master, just possessing that body. In planet of dust the Beevers Master revealed that he eventually lost the Roberts body and reverted back to his 13th self
The doctor was a lousy student. That was established at least twice during the 4th Doctor’s period. Romana even mocked him for it when she first appeared
William Hartnell's Doctor wasn't a lousy student. Granted, he did have to apply to the Academy twice. He didn't do as well as the first Romana, but Doctor did better overall than the Master...
I really liked what they did with Missy n her transformation. Can't believe they completely gave up on that and went back to classic cartoonishly evil, which can be entertaining at times but a bit mmmmmehhh
Yeah sure, let's just get rid of one of the biggest villains. While we're at it, why not kill off the Daleks and Cybermen forever? We don't need them anymore, we have many iconic new villains with equally limitless potential. Like the P'ting. I'm sure they could do JUST AS MANY stories with that deep, lore rich character as they have with the Master.
@@will6330 well that's good and all, but missy said one of them was a lie which was the little girl, because the cloister wars happened and we know he stole the presidents daughter, even though they say it was his wife.
Sacha is a brilliant master, yet there is no real concrete evidence that he's after missy, because if he was before missy, he wouldn't tell the doctor before that point because even they know that time would shatter.
Dark Path is a glaring omission, The War King stuff though is in a time war that was averted and never happened now so best left out. Rosette man is unconfirmed but likely, but the Adventuress of Henrieta Street was such an awful book to try to get any real definitive anything out of, probably best left unmentioned. I mean its all based on 3rd hand accounts and other BS that renders it all but unreadable. Law Miles worst ever book.
I would enjoy a movie about the doctor and the Master as children and then growing up, it would be interesting to see how their friendship developed and how they became enemies.
It's amazing how many lifetimes The Master lived and died through. So the master got a whole new cycle of regenerations before the movie and used them all by then? That's some rough dedication there.
No he didn’t. He was still in his 13th Incarnation as whenever he lost one of his stolen bodies he would always revert back to the Geoffrey Beevers form
I would suggest putting a simple noise gate on your voice, or perhaps a DeEsser, so that inhales and exhales won’t be as distracting. Production notes aside, this is a wonderful biography of the Master’s life. I love this video.
@@EditedAF987 And the Time War is mentioned in some of the Doctor Who novels, especially the Engines of War [ I'm too lazy to look it up ] with the origins of the War Doctor.
The master then fell in to an alternate universe where dragons were the superior beings on earth and renamed himself blister, pretended to be a woman and then he died and was used by Gerald Robotnik to create the ultimate life for on the space colony ark, then his remains were thrown out in to space and was found and resurrected by the toymaker and he begged to be put in the toy maker’s gold tooth
So 13 minutes into the video, when the Master is executed on Scarro, and he makes the request for the doctor to take his remains home, he most likely did this via a timelord confession dial. During Missy’s era, she explains to Clara that when timelords die, a confession dial is delivered to their closest relationship. The confession dial is a sort of will, stating the timelords last wishes. I wonder if all Galifreyans get this or if it’s just the timelords.
Excellent! Brilliant synopsis, seemingly from beyond the sources I fluent in. Thanks! I’m still not convinced that Sacha master regenerated directly from Missy though. Perhaps in the next few years/decades we wi get more clarity on that, and other things 😅 Again thanks for all your exhaustive work dedication & analysis!

Quite a good video- though there have been a few new Master stories since 2020, such as Masterful and MASTER! (Plus the ongoing War Master series)- but otherwise, marvelous!
Great breakdown of the Master and his/her regenerations! I've seen a few other breakdowns with uncertainty as to which regeneration number belongs to each Master. It can cause quite the headache. 😀
I like to think O's Master is before Missy. It doesn't feel right that we got all that character development simply tossed aside but then again can we expect that level of thoughtful writing from Chibnall at this point?
In all honesty I feel like the entire era of Chibnall’s writing really doesn’t do the doctor or the master justice. The Master is just used as a 2 dimensional main villain for the doctor and all he ever really does is somehow manage to destroy Gallifrey out of nowhere and reveal the timeless child through the 10 minute monologue explaining everything. It all just feels really insulting to the material that came before it, and I hope that future showrunners will somehow be able to rectify it and redeem both characters.
it would be pretty neat if they made an ep or two about the master and the doctor’s relationship with each other and the decas during their time in the time lord academy
@31:00 I love how Missy as "The Doctor" was dressed up in a hat similar to ROMANA 1 ! I loved Romana 1 and hoped for a second we would get a full season after of Missy as a Companion...
There really is no proof that Missy is after saxton master, just like there's no proof that dhawan master is after missy. It's more than likely that Missy is the last incarnation of the master and is the end of the master completely(though that can also not be true but we don't know), and that the dhawan master is between missy and the saxton master. Or even before saxton, we don't know. Either way all those people complaining about missy's development being gone are really complaining over nothing.
In the diaries of river song Eric Roberts was actually in an episode and seemed to be after the TV movie with the fact he is trying to escape the time vortex by building a tardis like machine
There's a lot of assumptions in this about when the Master became "O" As we never see the full regenerations of the Master, it's more likely (as per character growth) that his O form was before Missy.
I'm convinced the Master isn't really a timelord but some kind of reality bending creature that's like a Timelord but more OP. He would have been a better Timeless child
I mean he could actually be the timeless child the Master is not known for being a reliable source of information. Also a large part of their story ark together is the master trying to get a rise out of the doctor
On some blogs the idea seems to be that yes there is “a” Timeless Child, but there were two children playing in that clip showing the Timeless Child and one fell … the fallen one could be the Master. (The inference being that he may also be a Timeless Child.)
I loved the original masters, John Simm was a perfect crown to that, Missy was an ok choice but only because Michelle Gomez is fantastic at playing unhinged (and im sure the green room is what landed her the job)....but Sacha Dhawan plays it as an annoying, petulant child. You don't feel like he is the ultimate nemesis to the doctor anymore, there is no flow between them. It's one child, dealing with another child and both make you feel like you wnt to slap them and say grow up.
@@CrashHeadroom fair enough me I personally rank him as my least favourite not saying Jodie is but I respect that other people will like Matt or Jodie or both it’s all about personal preference

There is a great deal of information about the Master in the older Doctor Who novels and a couple of excellent stories.
We always thought the Master was hell bent on surviving, but he's not - *he's hell bent on beating the Doctor, and he'd live for a million if that's how long it'd take.*
In Last of the Time Lords, the Doctor thought he knew the Master - he thought all he wanted was to live forever.
Think about he planned if he was to loose to die and to be brought back he knew that dying was only part of his plan to mess around with him till it’s time
@@FreihEitner Maybe during Tom's time? Tom could be happy and joyful, and then dark and brooding...

This is a 'masterful' video
Are you American? I honestly thought you were British right up until you typed "program" instead of "programme", I have occasionally wondered what the Dr. Who phenomenon was like Stateside back in the 1970's and like how far behind in episodes being aired where they.
a lot of the early history is fumy because you know a lot of it is ad libbed by different writers over the entire run of the show. huge props to this guy and wiki writers i guess
THISSSS IS nuts. I can't imagine that being able to get included in the storyline. MANNNN...!!
Going from Missy to the timeless child Master was a downgrade, really not enjoying the Chibnal era wrecking gold like Missy's character development from previous seasons.
Listen to the big finish missy chronicles series 2 and the episode, the lumiat and then you’ll understand how missy became the master.
Ok but let’s assume that simm regenerated to the spymaster and he was just like extra bad cause of what missy told simm, so that missy is a much future incarnation.
Its a crime we never saw Sir Derek onscreen more than we did
Master and missy are obviously my favourite villain
@Alfie Brown!!!!!!!! ???

Loved it, awesome job mate
That was quite revealing! Thanks!
Story of Romana please!? soo good! thanks for explaining the transformation into Missy, great research skills, love it
Romana 1 or 2, or both?...
@@marknorth8904 i didnt know there were two! so both i guess hehe!
14:43 nice to know that they made the master look like Lex Luther.
@@marknorth8904Which isn't good, considering the second time he barely passed.
I really liked what they did with Missy n her transformation.
Can't believe they completely gave up on that and went back to classic cartoonishly evil, which can be entertaining at times but a bit mmmmmehhh
Totally... it was a huge cop-out and an equally big eyeroll
I like to think he came before Missy hence why she kept sorta hinting "since the doctor was a little girl"
No mention of The Dark Path Master, The War In Heaven, The Magistrate, The War King, or The Man With The Rosette?
Dark Path is a glaring omission, The War King stuff though is in a time war that was averted and never happened now so best left out. Rosette man is unconfirmed but likely, but the Adventuress of Henrieta Street was such an awful book to try to get any real definitive anything out of, probably best left unmentioned. I mean its all based on 3rd hand accounts and other BS that renders it all but unreadable. Law Miles worst ever book.
Just finished the Dark Path. it was such a great story.
Wow this was really well done & In-depth! A lot I didn't know about in this video!
Great video guys! I’d love to see the history of River Song!
The Complete Story of the Time War next?😁
That would be pretty difficult considering that the war messed with the timelines heavily so there is a lot of contradiction in the accounts of it
@@EditedAF987 And the Time War is mentioned in some of the Doctor Who novels, especially the Engines of War [ I'm too lazy to look it up ] with the origins of the War Doctor.
Roger Delgado will always be the best incarnation of the master
animelovers000 Completely agree, Roger Delgado was amazing as The Master, all others are pale imitations.
@@RiminiVirage you must've have listened to the war master then
John Simm will always be my favourite
@@RiminiVirage Anthony Ainsley was pretty good, too. But yeah, Roger Delgado captured the character's essence best, I feel.
The one during Tim bakers time as the doctor was pretty good I thought.
You failed to mention the Master's fate in 3rd Doctor novel ''The Last of the Gaderene''.
I could see a Torchwood revival led by The Master
I would totally watch a series like this that covers the timeline of every doctor, the big finish audios add so much to the story
Needed this today. I agree with the idea Missy was the final regeneration of the Master.
This video is a
*Master* piece
Excellent! Brilliant synopsis, seemingly from beyond the sources I fluent in. Thanks!
I’m still not convinced that Sacha master regenerated directly from Missy though. Perhaps in the next few years/decades we wi get more clarity on that, and other things 😅
Again thanks for all your exhaustive work dedication & analysis!
Who do you consider to be the second best Master? Mine is Michelle Gomez...Third, John Simm, barely ahead of Anthony Ainley,,,
@@marknorth8904 Missy, second after Delgado. He set the mold after all. Unfortunately Sacha didn’t live up to Missys bar though his best performance, by far, was his last one
He kinda reminds me of Loki
Awesome video, guys! I love explanations of lore like these. I'm desperate to find out where Sacha's Master falls in the timeline.
The BBC has, more of less, confirmed that he's post Missy when they did his Master History video after Spyfall part 1.
This entire channel is like grahams companions support group amd I’m here for it.
"...locked away forever."
Of course, being _Doctor Who,_ forever is a bit of a nebulous concept. 😉
Not really. Forever means forever. It's not hard.
The master's timeline is just like "HAHA SIKE BITCH"
Now that was really, very well done...
I'd like to think John Simms regens into the most recent master, with Missy after him
I like to think O's Master is before Missy. It doesn't feel right that we got all that character development simply tossed aside but then again can we expect that level of thoughtful writing from Chibnall at this point?
I think Davies will retcon it
In all honesty I feel like the entire era of Chibnall’s writing really doesn’t do the doctor or the master justice.
Okay, the master is the doctors best and worst friend😂😂 like damn. The master is also really unappreciated 😂
Fr😂
it would be pretty neat if they made an ep or two about the master and the doctor’s relationship with each other and the decas during their time in the time lord academy
@31:00 I love how Missy as "The Doctor" was dressed up in a hat similar to ROMANA 1 !
I loved Romana 1 and hoped for a second we would get a full season after of Missy as a Companion...
Thanks for uploading it love this video
Blimey, didn’t realise Big Finish and books had SO MUCH lore!
What if the midnight creature was the master within his shadowy form
Nah, he would’ve mentioned it if he was
And there was that time the Master literally destroyed a third of the universe...
In the diaries of river song Eric Roberts was actually in an episode and seemed to be after the TV movie with the fact he is trying to escape the time vortex by building a tardis like machine
Great video you did miss what happened in Mastermind but other than that great video 🙂
Oh yeah, I forgot about that, that is a glaring omission as well! Well remembered.
There's a lot of assumptions in this about when the Master became "O"
As we never see the full regenerations of the Master, it's more likely (as per character growth) that his O form was before Missy.
See you’re problem with Sacha is the problem I have with Matt Smith he acts to much like a child
@@alistairrae9807 I have that same problem XD It's just even he's a more bareable now compared to it all (except big finish) :(
@@CrashHeadroom fair enough me I personally rank him as my least favourite not saying Jodie is but I respect that other people will like Matt or Jodie or both it’s all about personal preference
Somehow, Palpatine returned.
I love how chaotic the master is. He just dgaf.
I'm not quite sure the latest incarnation follows Missy nor that Missy comes directly after Simms. There's not much to indicate it either.
Somehow palpatine returned...i mean the master
I actually believe O is before Missy. The way the character behave makes more sense in that order, and going from time lord cybermen to time lord tech to make dark water cybermen makes perfect sense
It’s been confirmed in books and an audio story O comes after the Lumiat who came after Missy.
@@RR4711 that's truly a shame. In that case I wish there would've been more than just one season before he was brought back. Hopefully I'm right about my other theory that ruth is actually the valeyard. I'm fine with the timeless child reveal since there being incarnations of the doctor before the 1st Doctor was foreshadowed back in the 4th doctor era but I don't think Ruth is one of them.
What is the lumiat? I'm really only familiar with the shows lore, I am looking forward to investing in big finish stories but just can't afford to do so now
James Dreyfus is confirmed to be the first master and the other regenerations were unknown until Delgado as the final one of the first cycle.
No, Geoffrey Beavers' incarnation is the 13th and Delgado is the 12th, as he is seen to regenerate after a conflict with the 12th Doctor.
Doctor_Who_Gaming actually Delgado hasn’t been specifically confirmed as the 12th. He could be any incarnation from 2-12
