Venom in the comics is an anti hero who cares for the innocent. The only reason he's considered a villain is because he wants to kill spiderman. However he puts that aside real quick and teams up with spiderman to fight Carnage which shows that he cares about protecting the innocent even more than killing spiderman. Venom is phychotic, twisted, and brutal but he is not evil.

I should probably state that the movie was based on the lethal protector and hunger series, where venom and Eddie are in a more "romantic" relationship, all this stuff is in that series and its pretty faithful.
As for the relationship, it turns more romantic and they outright refer to it as a marriage. They are more like an anti hero and care about protecting innocents in that series. The relationship in the comics is why the girl says the kiss was venoms idea, and venom was an outcast on his planet.
He wanted to actually bond with his host instead of devour them. Its was pretty faithful to the comic series it was based on.

I really don’t know what effects they can do to make Venom any more realistic. I feel many people’s expectations of CG are too high for every production. The second people know that an effect was CG, they just won’t allow themselves to be fooled by it unless it’s the absolute best, and even then they always compliment the other effects. It’s like puppets, even the best puppets won’t fool everyone, but because it’s, “real,” and, “actually there,” and it automatically gets bonus points. So many people just treat CG as lazy effects or just ignore them and I think that’s unfair.

Movies are supposed to make you buy into the universe. Bad Cgi can take you out of it. We've seen plenty of examples of amazing CGI like planet of the apes.

    • @charleshockenbury353
      @charleshockenbury353 5 років тому +16

Carlos That’s true, and I hope I’m not coming across as some ignorant fanboy. Honestly, I just have a hard time seeing so called bad CGI. For example, I cannot for the life of me see what’s wrong with Cavil’s lip in Justice League. So I guess I do take it personally when people call out a film for it’s distracting CGI when I wasn’t bothered at all, but I still feel CG has a bad rap, like it’s too easy a target. In Venom for example, what on earth could any effects specialist do to make a sentient, semi liquid, alien creature “more realistic?” Maybe if the focused on just venom and no other aliens they could iron out the effects, but I honestly don’t know if it could look any more realistic than this. You could do a combination of effects, but then of course everyone will call it “fake looking “ at any point CG is required for an action set piece, which would only be slowed done by more concrete effects. I’m not trying to say bad CG isn’t out there, and you’re mileage may vary, but isn’t possible that we are trying to hold a certain affect to a bar that it can’t reach on its own? CG only ever seems to be recognized when it somehow exceeds all expectation or “fails” miserably. Not every film is as good as Jurrasic Park, so why should every effect be as good as the ones in that?

    • @coletrainhetrick
      @coletrainhetrick 5 років тому +5

First of all, it isn't hard to use practical effects, there are so many shots in this that would look so much better if they were done practically. Cg should compliment the effects, not be the main course. And there is great CGI is things such as infinity war as a recent example or annhilation, venom had too much going on and it just made it worse. A lot of shots were good but not always

I'm gonna have to COMPLETELY disagree with the "we wanna see Venom as the bad guy only" mentality, I'm not a big comic book guy (my thing is mainly manga), but I do remember Venom having a redemption arc and even sacrificing himself in the 90s cartoon, also, a friend of mine who is big on american comics lent me a venom miniseries that stars him as a good guy, he still hates spiderman and wants to kill him but throughout that story he was going out of his way to help some people. Which honestly makes him much more interesting than just being a plain bad guy.

OttoeCamn Here’s the thing though. The tag line of the movie is “The World has enough Superheroes”. That already implies that they’re gonna make him a villain in this movie all the way through. So when he becomes a hero, it feels like it’s going against its own advertising.

    • @ArynBacklogDragon
      @ArynBacklogDragon 5 років тому +10

I'll admit I didn't see that Tagline, still, I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect Hollywood to make a straight up villain as the protagonist, so him as an anti-hero is fine. Hate to tell you this but it WAS a rom com. And Eddie and Venom were the couple. (read some more modern comics with them, yes it's canon and not just 'shipper goggles'). This movie doesn't give them a ton of time to develop to that point, but they obviously have snarky couple chemistry. I am not saying it is a *healthy* relationship, it's very codependent and both have issues, but it still is a relationship. Meanwhile Anna and Dan were refreshing as hell (new boyfriend who was supportive, and doesn't end up betraying / being an ass to the ex boy friend, and same with Anna who was100% justified to dump him but then also still cared a friend to help him when she thought he was like having a mental breakdown, and wasn't a 'vilified bitch ex').
It was a fun cheezy AU romp with a dysfunctional human/monster couple and I rather enjoyed it. Not saying it was a 'great movie', it does have a lot of basic issues many of which you stated and I agree with (weird editing, pacing issues, awkward dialogue, questionable villain), but it has a lot there character wise for those looking beyond a shallow viewing of 'action hero movie'. That stuff obviously went way way over your head. Still, thanks for the review, it's always fun seeing different viewpoints!

Personally, I really did like the banter between Eddie and the symbiote. Many of its decisions didn't make logical sense because it's not that intelligent of a creature. It works on instinct. Later on, it begins to become emotional because not only was Eddie influenced by it, it was influenced by Eddie.

It has too many villains and because of that can’t give any of them the screen time they deserve. Ok. People were complaining (and rightly so) that Venom was pg-13. Since Venom is a cross between an addict’s mentality and a monster’s hunger, the movie really can’t flex Venom’s muscles under that limitation. BUT. How in the fuck are they supposed to do CARNAGE if Venom is pg-13!?! Carnage! The name alone needs to be hard R. If Venom is a monster, Carnage is a demon. Hell. One reason why I love the Maximum Carnage game is it felt like Carnage just being loose in the city caused enough chaos that it’s game time fore every punk, mobster, and villain to do pretty much whatever they want. How can Sony, morons as they are, even HOPE to do Carnage any justice when Venom is too hardcore for them?
Answer. They can’t. God, I hope the MCU keeps going with Spider Man to see that version deal with the Black Suit addiction, the guilt of Brock and Venom, and the extreme manicness of Carnage. It would be amazing.

The problem is, that Eddie Brock simply does not work for this kind of Venom. You need Flash Thompson, who bonded with the Venom symbiote and actually showed it how to become a hero. Also the struggle of a crippled veteran bonding with the symbiote to mend his body would have made the connection more powerful as he would require it too and interesting things could have been explored with his war trauma saving both himself and the symbiote from his inner demons.

"I liked venom tho in a movie"
So the thing what most people point out as main flaw? Venom is uncontrollable monster. He should not make a edgelord jokes. He should kill people! And that doesn't mean that Eddie Brock can't be antihero, but they should play him as early Bruce Banner. Basically after his ass was kicked by Peter (making it prequel is another stupid idea) he resign from his revenge, and just want go over it. But then some more evil people then him show up, and so he need fight both for own survival and redemption. That how you make antihero stories (look on MCU Punisher as example of well executed concept).

-The whole hosts thing is the conclusion the scientists come to, for all we know, the symbiotes just pretend to look for the right host so they get free food
-Venom possesses a dog after being separated from eddie, i feel that's why he suddenly likes humans (at least that's the explaination I was waiting for, better than "just because")
-I'm pretty sure Venom being rejected by his peers is also in the comics.
Side note, but at the begining of the movie, the mentioned something about Sibiu, which is Romania, but the spaceship crashed in Malaysia? Donno, maybe I was hearing/reading things, I'll wait till it comes on DVD and someone uploads it on UA-cam.

It is good it's not greater than expectations but it's good enough for those expectations. Even if a better script and vilence it wouldnt make it a better film. Black Panther was pg13 but that was good with brutal kills too. The problem with this is it was a R rated film that got cut for time not to make money or be lame. It had too much.

13:55 actually Doug, I didn’t know this either but there are several different symbiotes that appear in the comics. Obviously we know and love Venom and Carnage. But there are others, namely Toxin, Anti-Venom, Scream, Hybrid, Phage, Agony, Lasher, Scorn, Mania and Riot. I had to look them all up cus I can't remember all the names either. I’ve also seen articles debating whether the two symbiotes that died were Phage and Scream.

Ok apparently you haven't read the origin. Venom's symbiote didn't look like how venom looks now it's an exaggeration of Spiderman's looked and Eddie Brock's character. Venom was an outcast on his planet because he wanted to mutually bond with their host and not dominate them. So he was imprisoned. So yeah he was like he said he was on his planet. When he bonded with Eddie he took his big frame made it bigger and crazier looking and multipled Brock's strength and mutal hate for Spiderman and that's how we have have venom.

  • @genemaxwell4

Doug, I love your reviews but you're just sooo off on this one. I've been waiting for 22 years to see Venom on the big screen. Yes when I was 5 I fell in love with that awesome Anti-hero and followed most of his media.
And this adaptation is PERFECTLY adapted from Lethal Protector. Venom is an Anti-Hero who initially does try to do the right thing before descending into total madness. And Hell he eventually becomes more heroic later.
The following is spoiler free as I'm just going to use direct quotes from various critics.
After seeing the movie EVERY SINGLE CRITIC THAT SAID BAD THINGS IS WRONG!!! "It feels like it's from 2004"
What? I didn't get that at ALL!!! It had a very similar feel as Spider-man Homecoming!! Mix of drama and humor.
"Everyone is treating the movie like it's serious except for Tom Hardy" Umm he's EDDIE FREAKING BROCK AS VENOM! HAVE YOU READ A COMIC WITH VENOM!!!!???? HE'S A DARK HUMOR MACHINE!!!!! IT'S KINDA HIS THING
"Eddie Brock is an unlikable, arrogant character." Ummm. Huh? Compared to his original form this Eddie is straight up a stand up guy. So because he's trying to bring down a terrible person he's unlikable? WHAT? "This movie doesn't know what it wants to be" Again, Venom is a dark humor person. HE EATS PEOPLE. Duh, it's gonna be a mix of drama and humor.
"Eddie makes out with Venom. That's not something anyone needed to see" Ever hear of She-Venom aka Bride of Venom? Anne did get the symbiote briefly. In this movie Venom was trying to do Eddie a solid and try and bring them back together. "This movie is proof that not every marvel character needs it's own movie" Just fuck off. You clearly have no idea about how Venom works. "Spider-man 3's Venom set a bar so low I didn't think anything could be worse. I was wrong" This Venom DESTROYS 3's Venom. This one actually says we, kills bad guys, EATS PEOPLE, and forms an actual BOND WITH EDDIE!
Bottom line, this movie is freaking awesome! While I do think an R rating would have done it a little better just because there should have been a bit of blood and gore. I mean Venom EATS people. But that's a minor thing and for PG-13 it worked. Just like Infinity War or Cap Civil War. You can have extreme violence without the gore so I will let that go.
GO SEE VENOM!!!! FUCK THE IMBECILIC CRITICS THAT CLEARLY HAVE NEVER READ A VENOM COMIC IN THEIR LIFE!!! Rotten Tomatoes shows that only 31% critics liked it but AUDIENCES HAVE IT AT 88%! GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!! HELP US GET OUR SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE DESERVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

genemaxwell4 genemaxwell4 genemaxwell4 There is so much wrong with this comment. First off, people are saying Eddie was too comedic, because it went against the tone. It felt like he was coming from a Jim Carrey movie into what was supposed to be serious. You can have comedy, but it needs to actually be woven in and not feel so out of place.
3 is way better than this, because Topher Grace had an actual personality. Just because it’s more comic accurate doesn’t mean it’s good. Especially since 3 had better cgi, Topher Grace Venom has a better motivation, and is just more memorable.
And no, this movie doesn’t know what it wants to be. does it want to be over the top silly comedy or dark angst? You can’t be both, and it’s not the kind of dark humor this movie needs. Homecoming worked, because the drama and humor went hand in hand rather than feeling awkwardly crowbarred in with each other.
And what bond does he form with Eddie? There’s never a moment where they actually connect. Venom just keeps telling him to go to different places, then all of a sudden says, “Changed my mind. I’m gonna protect earth. Because of our friendship” WHAT FRIENDSHIP?!! They never formed any bond whatsoever.
So, no. Don’t go see this movie. Critics actually studied up on film and proper filmmaking, and know this film is bad. Just because it crammed a bunch of comic references down our throat doesn’t mean it‘s a good movie. It’s poorly written, terribly edited, has mediocre acting and boasts some truly terrible special effects, chock full of forgettable characters, and a tone wavering between stupid Adam Sandler comedy and early 2000’s angst film.

@Channel Awesome I think your thinking of the wrong perspective of Venom from this movie Nostalgia Critic, have you ever read Modern Eddie Brock Venom Comics and Flash Thompson Agent Venom Comics, yea, the movie is a bit more like a mesh of those two, with little sprinkles of killing that make it a call back to villainous Venom, this Venom in the movie is not traditional, but it is a mix between Modern Eddie Brock and Traditional Venom, I just hope you realize that because this version makes him more open in not only comic adaptations, but also film adaptations too, and maybe we will one day see Eddie Brock mentor Flash Thompson and also potentially have Venom and Spider-Man team up with little to no intensity between each other other than just Spider-Man disliking symbiotes a little bit, Just thought I'd share my point of view with you about your review with this movie, you may not like this venom movie, but I do, and we can agree to disagree, but all in all, I respect your opinion, and I hope your see this comment and respect my opinion too, and maybe possibly respond to it too, I'll see ya later Nostalgia Critic :)

Connor Treweeke Ok. How is he a loser? Physically? I guess, but we only see him fight Riot, and even then the justification for that could be Riot is the leader and stronger than Venom naturally. And if it’s personality wise, Venom and Riot act identical to each other. With the same transformers dialogue and big scratchy voices. They’re so poorly defined that I can’t tell what makes Venom a loser. And again, we’re not shown anything prior to this that indicates Venom is a loser. The basic rule of film is “show, don’t tell”. Venom uses the “tell, don’t show” rule, and it never seems like they made what they’re showing match up with what they’re telling.

I actually agree on that idea that he goes after those who wronged him as Eddie Brock where he tries his best to get back to a journalist position without cutting corners but still self suffering Venom comes and he kills of Cephus Jones character the editor so no continuity issues with him as Eddie Fish, he attacks Anne bf, and kills of the guards and one cop. But Eddie convinces Venom to control his anger (I believe the meditation scene mentioned shouldve been played up more ala Hulk/Banner) and so they become good because of Eddie.

I mean, Venom's personality gets affected by every host it bonds with. The reason it's so crazy is because it was bonded with an alien serial killer for, like, twenty years, then was bonded with Deadpool for a few seconds and got to experience the horrors of Wade's mind before it even met Spider-Man.

Hey Doug, no, riot has been around for a long time. It is part of the symbiot family, with the life foundation and the children of venom and carnage. It’s a whole story arc, with riot, scream, venom, carnage, toxin, the skipper and Marianne 🤣🤣
It’s around the anti venom symbiot era.
I guess they decided to skip all of venom’s history. Just wait, they just introduced how the klyntar race started in the comics. That’s a whole new story.
That venom purse dog would have made the whole movie 🐶🐶🤣🤣🤣
I hate the fact that Sony said they were not gonna blend the two. Venom is gonna be a separate entity and not merge with Spider-Man. Boy, Sony is really fucking up!
They have to hand all of them back to marvel.

Venom movie comes out and says Spider-Man will not be in it: people freak the fuck out and say it’s not staying true to the comics.

I haven't seen infinity war but I would argue it's not a spider-Man thing. It's more like he's in it. When I think Spider-Man I think it should focus on him and his villains and problems. Infinity war focus on the avengers and the other teams that join them. So yeah I agree Spider-Man ps4 is the best this year. Hell I'd argue best in the decade, aside from the comics but I have a hard time trying to read those.

But also being unaware that they made the world benefit from their actions. like riot possess the leader and mentally broke him down and riot wants to turn earth were symbiotes rule. though that is what I wanted not sure everybody else does.

Hey, Doug. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet. But when you talked about possibly not seeing Tom Hardy in the right thing to feel for him, my brain immediately went to the film Locke. Don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it is my favorite Hardy performance. It’s reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds in Buried. Hardy’s kinda the only person on screen, but it’s crazily captivating for something that scaled down. I’d recommend that one if you missed it. (And I’m 90% sure it’s on Netflix.)
