Im disappointed you didnt comment on the part were the goblin disintegrates the oscorp execs. That scene traumatized me as a child that's why the movie is pg 13
It's like Hugh Jackman to Wolverine, or RDJ to Iron Man. There's just some casting decisions where it's so perfect and on point, that even the producers know nobody else could fit the role. You don't see an actor portraying a comic book character, you see a comic character come to life. Hell, didn't JK do the voice of Jameson in one of the cartoons as well?
I enjoyed that J.J.J. defended Parker and played ignorance. Regardless of the character's prejudices, he has journalistic integrity. Plus his hatred of both masks and criminals further shows why he's defiant to Goblin. In that scene, they deepen the character.
I was just thinking about that scene the other day and realized, "Holy crud, Jameson wasn't a total jerk after all!" As a kid I both hated him for disliking Spider-Man, a guy trying to help the city, but also liked how JK Simmons brought him to life (not to mention that he was one of the best things about Spider-Man 3).
Jameson defended Pete in the Spectacular Spider-Man series too when Rhino was wrecking the Bugle. He was using hand signals to tell Peter to run. Just shows that even tho JJ maybe a sourpuss, he's got a heart of gold.
I remember asking that when I was saw this movie as a kid. My older brother told me that a newspaper publisher will always protect his sources as a matter of pride.
That's actually one of the most faithful character adaptations from the comic books. Jameson has adamant journalist's integrity. He once fired Peter, someone who's worked for him for years and has always delivered only the best Spider-Man pics for the paper because he spliced some pics. Jameson looked at Peter as if Pete was dead to him. The guy hates Spider-Man's guts but he's a spectacular journalist
Yep, corny, but sounds like it came right out of a comic book, which is exactly what Raimi was aiming for. This remains one of the most comic booky comic book movies to date.
"So Jameson's willing to put his life on the line for Parker?...It's possible, but you've gotta explain it." I don't think you do. Somebody could be a gruff, greedy jerk and still not want to give someone up to a psychotic murderer.
I don't get how Critic would think Jj would give Peter up like that. Like Jj can be a jerk but I doubt he would put his employees in danger especially in the hands of a psychopath. Jerk doesn't always equal emotionless asshole
While Jameson is often a jerk, he also is consistently shown to possess a basic sense of integrity and morality. He would never willingly endanger another person's life, especially one of his own employees. Jameson has never been portrayed as someone who would do something like that -- not in the source material, and not in any adaptations.
Even Dafoe said he had the most fun in this movie. Honestly, I love his portrayal as the Goblin BECAUSE it's so over the top and Hammed. He literally is a comic book villain. Perfect Jekyll and Hyde feel that the Goblin has in the comics. Seriously, alot of the Goblin at the time in the comics was goofy and warped whenever he's behind the mask, but Norman was cunning and slick. Honestly Dafoe was born to play this role. Better than someone who played a SECOND in a not so "Amazing" Spider-Man...
@@Disconnect350 I do think the MCU has good villains, but they kill them off way too quickly. But I do think they set it up perfect for Norman to step in. See, in the MCU Tony is dead, someone needs to step up and replace Stark Industries. Enter Norman and Harry Osbourne, father and son. With their business, Oscorp. Now that he is in the films, they can use Oscorp and eventually unveil the Goblin however they want.
The nostalgia is strong lmao. He was cool as kid back in the day, but now, its so cringe and I can't help but laugh at him instead of with him. Just because its over the top and fun doesn't mean its good. He's like venom and im willing to bet you didnt enjoy that nearly as much.
@@Sadvillainy Depends which venom. Topher Grace wasn't a good venom, but I sorta did like his design. It was interesting to see a venom who perfectly mimicked the Tobey Spidey suit. But the performance was subpar. Tom Hardy was a decent venom and his design was a definite improvement. The only thing I didn't like about Hardy's venom wasn't even Venom himself. It was Woody Harrelson as Carnage. I can't see him as Cassidy and oh God that wig was so bad. Personally I would've cast the actor who played as Rorschach in the Watchmen films or if they were okay with a younger Cassidy, Cameron Monaghan would do really well.
The only problem is his suit :/ I MEAN WHY?! They had an awesome and creepy AF animatronic mask READY for the movie...and someone said 'oh nononono! No! This will the scare the shit out of kids!' - but hey...THAT WAS THE INTENTION OF GOBLIN AND HOBGOBLIN IN THE FIRST PLACE! - THE FACE OF PURE FEAR! :(
Nostalgia Critic: "I've always thought the Raimi films were overrated". Spider-Man fans: "Misery, misery, misery, that is what you have chosen. I offered you friendship and you spat in my face".
Funny fact all critics that was making videos about new spider man being better than Raimi's including NC, Forgot that new spider-man even exists 35:00. P. S. yeah there was a movie about spiderman between Raimi's and homecoming. Hard to believe but its true.
Jameson protecting his sources makes total sense. He's a journalist with an ethical duty to protect his sources. He constantly spins stories but he knows peter is just a kid and he doesn't want to endanger him. You have to consider Jonah is the head of a major media empire and it comes with the territory with him that he'd be a target. Kinda makes Jonah way more likable.
Bad Dragonite he is also just a nice guy he does not like vigilantes bc his son (an astronaut) and others like him never get the praise of spider man as they aren’t seen as the larger than life people they are or at least that’s what I remember
@@aminacunningham146 Well that and JJJ had a bad experience with a guy in a mask sometime in his past which resulted in him having a bias against people in masks
Remember that Family Guy cutaway where Peter thinks a guy is a jerk and learns he gives money to orphans with diseases That’s the equivalent of JJJ protecting Peter even when he’s not paying him for those exclusive shots
I actually like that Jameson sticks his neck out for Peter. In most stories Jameson is a good guy and is just against vigilantes. In spectacular Spider-Man he does the same thing.
I remember seeing a part of a comic where Jameson was asked why he bothered to hire an amateur photographer like Parker, and he referenced Uncle Ben's recent passing, saying something like "the kid needs help."
Well, yeah, but Spectacular was actually well written and thoughtful. Remember the episode where his son becomes a superhero after his dad prompts him when he gains powers, only to turn into a rampaging giant? That show made kids think... That's why it had to be cancelled. Heaven help the USA if the next generation actually starts thinking about moral implications!
@@TonicSpirits Yeah JJ is not an evil man, he can be very kind and helpful. In Spectacular he even risked his life to protect Peter from the Rhino. He just averse to Spiderman due to his dislike of masked vigilantes.
we are indeed, as I've seen more than a few comments about it already, but I'm guessing you are wondering why he didn't? Still plenty of time for that, 2 more movies to go and whatever else he does this month.
He and Dafoe were easilly the most on point actors in this movie. JK Simmons puts far more effort in it then he is required to, for such a small role. Meanwhile Dafoe nails Osbornes insanity in the comics
"I don't get why this was PG 13" Green Goblin blew up people to skeletons, blew up Spidey to a bloody pulp and get impaled by his own gliders blades. THAT'S WHY!
And the scene where he beats up the robber, and the scene where he goes mental wailing on the goblin at the end. That's why it wasn't rated PG over here in the UK
I liked the part where Green Goblin crashes through Aunt May's wall and tells her to finish the prayer because typically the villain says something edgy like "god can't save you now" instead we get Goblin taking pleasure in her praying to god for salvation because he takes delight in her suffering and helplessness the way an actual evil villain would
There's a theory that Jonah knows Peter is Spiderman, and that he actually supports him. The reason he sound harsh and condemning is that he actually wants Peter to stay on his A-game, and that if he complimented Spiderman, the Webslinger would get lazy.
@@thegameknight8916 I have a theory where JJJ is an agent of HYDRA. He's used not just The Daily Bugle, but his whole media empire, to not only make Spider-Man look bad, but every superhero in the Marvel U. You can already hear J.K. Simmons in your mind go "Hail HYDRA!", can't you?
I do not care. Willem Dafoe is still amazing in this movie. Even after all of these years I remember him. He’s definitely one of the most memorable villains I’ve ever seen.
"Why is this PG13?" Well you see a man impaled by a glider, a group of men vaporized and turned to skeletons, and oh yeah Green Goblin's creation scene
That part of the review actually annoyed me. Just because Spider-Man is cornier than most superhero movies doesn't mean it takes less risks. Hell, I can't recall the MCU being more PG13. MJs visible nipples alone would be a no-go.
The Rami films take their inspirations from 60's comics.More lighthearted with "cheese". They still hold up surprisingly well. They actually embrace the "comic book" in every. It is a comic book movie .
@@milosstojanovic4623 I wish the avengers got the same treatment in 2000s cause im tired of serious and mopy movies when there one of the most lighthearted and goofy characters in comic history
@@blacklightentertainment2308 the mcu movies try to do two things at once they won't let a character not say a joke but they expect you to feel sad and it doesn't work
because j.k. simmons is the ideal j. jonah jameson as a real life person. he is THAT great. every time you see j. jonah jameson in the comics, you will always hear j.k. simmons' voice in your head. the people that made the MCU knew that j.k. simmons is too good as j. jonah jameson and so they brought him into SM: Far from Home.
@@danielscott5673 That was the point of my question asking why. Making fun of the movie doesn't mean Doug never explains the good things about them, because he does. But during that list of good things, j.k. simmons as j. jonah jameson was never brought up. That was the point of my question.
You sound so surprised that Peter cries on the day of his graduation that his uncle who recently died couldn't attend...I don't know maybe I'm crazy. Edit: holy shit I didn't expect this much likes and support and so I'm gonna make an effort to reply to and give some perspective on these replies.
Nah he's full of crap, it's completely understandable to cry on the day you accomplish something and the person who raised you is not there to experience it.
J.K. Simmons is easily the best part of this whole movie. Toby Maguire's awkwardness and Willem Defoe's pure insanity are close seconds, but Simmons is the true meme. The difference is we're laughing WITH him, not at him.
I would not say it like that, i would say it like JK SImmons is the best part AS SIDE character in this movie, so he complements some cheese humor, and maybe some pacing issues(which honestly are not that of a problem). Also Director cut for second movie is amazingly fun, when he wears Spider-Man costume, its hilarious, also his jokes are the best parts of the movies. 😄😂
Give me someone who gives you crap to your face but defends you behind your back over someone who is nice to your face, but badmouths you behind your back.
Jameson has shown this attitude in the comics and other sources alike. He's pretty rude and you're supposed to think he hates spiderman for no reason (even though he actually has a reason), but deep down he still cares about others.
As cheesy as these movies can get, the earlier comics were JUST as cheesy. And that's the reason I love them, it's probably the most faithful adaptation of Stan Lee's writing style and tone.
And its not like the movies don't take themselves seriously either spiderman 2 is VERY melancholy and dark and smartly written. But this movie is just as much of a classic imo.
“The Spider-Mans were occasionally emotional but leaned more towards non-threatening imagery and ideas.” Meanwhile that scene where Goblin breaks into Aunt May’s room and sends her to the hospital because she was so frightened *horrified* me as a child
I remember seeing this in theaters and it blowing me away. Now the same scenes I find hilarious. That whole Aunt May scene is positively hilarious. I still love this movie but for different reasons than I did as a kid.
As a _kid_ the Green Goblin terrified me, and Spiderman's brutal beatdown by him was one of the most horrifying things I had ever seen on-screen. But as an adult, it's all so goofy.
Bruh Goblin gets impaled on screen by his glider...showing the blades piercing his waist, blood foaming at his mouth, & dies on screen LMFAO. A shot Stylistically inspired from Raimi’s Evil Dead, just like the Doc Ock Hospital scene. Doug is fucking delusional & needs to stop making corny ass jokes, holy fuck LMAO!💀
I've to admit, while I love the MCU Spidey films and the "Amazing" films deserve some praise, the Raimi trilogy is just very unique that I haven't see other movies able to replicate it. It really feels like a comic book movie rather than the current superhero movies.
"a drunken power ranger battle" - interestingly, Marvel allowed Toei to make a Spiderman show for the Japanese audience, which included Spiderman piloting a giant robot. The following year, Toei incorporated the idea of heroes piloting a giant robot into their Sentai series (creating Super Sentai). Many years later, Saban would begin adapting Super Sentai into Power Rangers. So in a way, Spiderman has come full circle.
@@barryfraser831 yes but the intentions are equally as important. If you're simply going against the grain for the purposes of seeming like an individual it's as superficial as going with the consensus.
The dialog, camera shots, and everything else in these movies are meant to resemble a comic book, where as the more recent spiderman movies are meant to be more "movie" movie.
not only that... Samie boy went into ridiculous lengths to make his scenes. Hell just look at peter's room. see how decorated it is and how much it aligns with his skills and character.
24:30 Stan Lee said it best; JJ is a good man. He cares about Peter and secretly admires Spider-Man. But he would NEVER admit to it. Kinda like how Snape treats the students badly... but is willingly to protect them at the drop of a hat.
@@xaayer Its basically what he does in Marvel's Spiderman (PS4). He loves New York and respects Spiderman , but isn't afraid to call either out for every time a supervillain gets out or when collateral damage is done

Spider_min: "But you won't" Green Giblon: "Why?" Spoder-Man: "Chicken Thigh" "..." Grin Giblin: "WELL I GUESS YA GOT ME THERE!"
“I still don’t see why this is PG-13” the blood, deaths, brutal beat down by goblin at the end, and goblin getting impaled on his on glider. Need I say more?
When you remember Doug's track record of having possible, short term memory loss and failure to put 2 and 2 together on things that even a casual child would notice on most of the films he's reviewed, it isn't surprising either.
Blood and deaths have been in multiple Disney movies that are rated PG, maybe the brutal beat down could be a bit intense for some young kids, but still. And yeah being impaled isn’t seen much in PG movies, but in Norman’s case it was honestly a pretty bloodless one, not helped by his “Oh” right before being impaled makes it a bit hard to take it seriously
I was also thinking he may just be flying off the handle because of the radioactive spider bite he received. All of the sudden he's a different person now. His whole DNA has been altered. Don't think you'd be all calm and cool and you're usual sweet self. So don't think it's just out of no where.
I don’t think Jameson defending Peter by not giving him up needs to be explained at all?? 🤔🤔he’s never been portrayed as a bad person, why would he sacrifice an innocent person to save his own skin? Especially someone who works for him. He’s clearly a man of integrity, and we see that when he fires Eddie Brock for providing the bugle with fake Spider-Man photographs. As much as he hates Spider-Man, he’ll never string him up using fake evidence to do so.
Another reason is my personal theory that he knows he is Spider-man and creates articles demonizing him. Just cause he knows Peter as a teenager and Spider-man will and is always trying to prove him wrong. He knows if everyone knew it would put people he knows, himself included in danger. Along with the fact he only pays him so little to keep Peter Humble.
Being a 14 year old that grew up with these movies when I was younger, I really don't like it when people my age say that these films are terrible and MCU Spider-man is better. The Spider-man trilogy is a masterpiece, even with all it's flaws and dated moments. For me, not only was seeing my favourite comic book character come to life amazing. But the way we see Peter grow as a person and deal with the bad parts of life was too inspiring and relatable for me, and still is now. That's only a fraction of the reasons I, and many other people love these films.
I grew up with these movies too, but I gotta say, I really thought Far From Home was fun and good. If they can do a good job with 3 I’ll be really pleased with both trilogies
I appreciate and value the Raimi films more than MCU Spider-Man because Peter is his own self made man and didn't get everything handed to him since the very beginning.
@@virtualboy3596 The MCU Spider-man movies are good, and I'm not gonna try and say they are not. However, my personal issue with those movies is that Peter Parker doesn't really feel like Spider-man. Spider-man isn't meant to have a rich sugar daddy (Tony Stark) who gives him an awesome suit with all those gadgets. Also, Tony Stark has basically replaced Uncle Ben in the MCU, which is something I'm not a massive fan of. Also, the lack of consequences that Peter has to face in the new movies is also something I don't like, he always seems to get away with all of his problems; he leaves Liz at the homecoming dance, he destroys that man's shop (in homecoming), aunt May finds out Peter is Spider-man and...everything is fine. There's no consequences.
he never said spiderman 2 didn't warrant a pg-13, he just said the "PG-13" value in the first one is extremely piss poor. I mean, unless you faint at the slightest of blood, then yeah. Even now it's pretty mundane and... not even that gruesome or even that needing of a pg-13. ESPECIALLY comparing it to nowadays what pg-13 is and how it was all handled before.
NC:"I can't imagine why these movies are PG-13" Plays the scene of the Goblin vaporizing people with theirs skeletons turning to dust, then the scene of Doc Ock tentacles butchering nurses with sounds of skin crawling screams and bone cracking, then the slow motion scene of Peter blowing up his friend face in half. Me:"Somehow neither do I"
Leandro Botchkarev actually apparently the reason it’s pg-13 is due to the scene in the rain where you can see Mary Janes nipples throught her shirt..... I wish I was making that up but that’s the reason
Jameson might dislike lots of people, especially his subordinates. But he’s not gonna just let a man in a green goblin outfit who just killed people at a Macy gray concert murder a guy he knows is actually a protector and not a menace.
@@maleficking6556 I think he's implying that Jameson knows deep-down that Spiderman is actually good for the city and a protector for it, but just demonizes him in the papers as a menace to sell more papers (kinda like how Skip Bayless probably knows deep-down that LeBron's a great player but overplays his hate for views).
@@saeedbaig4249 No, that wasn't about Spider-man, Goblin asked about who the hell was taking the pictures of Spider-Man. So he's not protecting Spider-Man as far as he knows, he's just not shoving Peter Parker under the bus for this whacko to find.
Maybe so. But my theory is that Peter is the only freelance photographer who works for Jameson for next to nothing basically. So if he outed Peter to the Goblin, he’d have to find another photographer who’s more expensive than Peter
Sigh. 9/11. But to be honest, I think a lot of us at the time were happy to see New Yorkers uniting with each other. It was a tumultuous time of grief and confusion, so it honestly did help us get over our issues. I know it's campy now, but if you were aware of what had happened on 9/11 regarding American society, it makes sense and was a bit cathartic.
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies were surprisingly ahead of their time. Nowadays, pretty much every scene has been made into a meme. It’s like Raimi could predict the meme culture of the modern day 24:35 It’s called journalistic integrity. A smart journalist protects their sources. But is it really so unbelievable that Jameson would protect Parker out of the goodness of his heart?
Ironically even though he obsesses over the idea that spidey is a menace, most of the comics portray him as being a fantastic journalist. He strictly believez in journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting. Plus his bsckstory sorta points as to why he hates spidermen. His dad was a soldier who was physically abusive to his mum, and it caused him to devolop an inherent distrust to "heroes" because he always suspects they when out of uniform they are violent assholes. Honestly, he really isnt that bad of a person i the comics
@@MisterXenomorph It still hilerious that he basicaly blames every evil ever on Spider-Man,playing the Ps4 spider-man game is so much more fun because of that. "Some one stole your puppy?,well we saw SPIDER-MAN! with it,CLEARLY he has Stolen the Puppy so he can give it back and earn the rewards for "finding" it, What a Sick egomanic this guy is". is the kind of things Jamison says in that Game and its so accurate to the movie portrayal and the comics its funny xd.
It's even in the novelization. Jameson knows that a good journalist always protects his source. And I love this small action because it adds a surprising layer of depth to the character.
Far as I know, Jameson covering for Parker is not out of character. Spectaculars version also put his neck on the line for Peter when Rhino stomped into the Office.
Fun fact: During the dinner scene with the turkey. Norman's clothes are blue and red to match spiderman and Peter's clothes are green to match Green Goblin
Aunt May wears blue for Peter, Harry wears red and green because he's between Spider-Man and the Goblin, Mary Jane wears black to impress Norman like Harry asked.
Why did he talk about the part when Green Goblin say “We’ll meet again Spider-Man!” That was the most comic book like moment in the movie. Same with the scene when Green Goblin and Spider-Man exchanged comebacks in the burning building.
Probably because Doug has admitted several times that he is not a comic book guy. He enjoys a lot of comic book movies but doesn't really know the lore or backstory on many of them and that shows in his reviews.
I don't know. That's pretty much every villain in cartoons who curses the protagonist after defeating him in a fight and promises that they shall meet again for the other day.
While I absolutely agree, I do find it annoying when they throw in comic book lines that don't land at all. Like Spidey calling him Gobbie, a nickname that totally feels undeserved (not to mention quite forced) in the movie, whilst in the comics it developed from a deep rivalry between the two. Same goes for many comic book quips and one-liners like Wolverine saying 'Bub' in the movies. They are tossed in for nostalgia and to make the fans squee themselves but honestly most just fall flat. So yeah it is for sure a comic book moment, but ultimately it was thrown in literally for that reason alone without any actual impact or emotion one would normally feel when reading in the comics. I'm not saying fans won't appreciate and enjoy those moments but can't really expect everyone to have the same reaction, especially if they aren't superfans of the comics or other source material.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 Keep in mind that most of those cartoons came about because the writers grew up on comic books. Our pop culture owes more to comics than we realize.
The fact that Peter is rude to Uncle Ben out of nowhere in that scene is unfortunately realistic as teenagers can be temperamental and ungrateful little shits at times.
The idea of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies being silly, cheesy and goofy were the point. Not only is it Sam Raimi's style, but Spider-Man comics themselves were over the top silly and goofy. That's why it was a perfect match, Sam Raimi working on Spider-Man films. They fit his style because the source material itself is silly and cheesy.
This review is honestly the most painfully nitpicky and unfair reviews he ever done. He doesn’t explain his opinions well and also has no respect for the fan who love this movie.
Yeah, Spider-Man was more dark and angst in the early Lee-Ditko comics. In fact, he wasn't much of an energetic smart mouth at the time compared to now.
Yeah. And Andrew Garfield is more like the Ultimate Spider-Man portrayal. I've seen the first few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, and it's kind of similar to the beginning of The Amazing Spider-Man. And Peter having a scientist for a father was also in the Ultimate comic, but they still kept Uncle Ben as Peter's main parental figure while Amazing Spider-Man made Peter's father be his role model.
Tell me about it! It's incredible how much low Doug's "humour" has fallen! And even if he never made the top 11 Dumbest Spider-Man moments I don't think these reviews would be much funnier or intresting.
The funny thing is that even though he says his opinion of them has changed a little bit I can still feel his old perception of them leaking through in these reviews, he’s pretty much saying “These movie are crap but they’re......enjoyable crap” I get the feeling he still dislikes them but he just wants the internet to get off his back about it so he forced himself to find a new context to view them in in order to call them good
I'm just reminded that these movies are actual cinematic perfection and I love every single frame and sound in all three movies. Are they stupid and goofy? Yes, and I love that. Are they ridiculously dated? Yes, and I love that. I say this without one single hint of irony or sarcasm, Tobey will always be my Spider-Man.
@Go Time Now their telling the story of person not just the hero spiderman 2 especially is perfect in that aspect his a guy who struggling to cope with everyday problems and being spider-man that's why peter parker in those movies are so relatable tom doesn't have his just a kid who has no problems whatsoever. Have you asked yourself why so many people have nostalgia for this movie I'll save you thinking about its cos their amazing. mark web amazing spiderman movies dont give anybody nostalgic feelings cos their trash and I guarantee you that more people will remember tobey Maguire spider-man over tom Holland spiderman in 20 years time.tobey maguire spider-man 4 is still being begged to get made by tons of people and the last film came out 13 years ago no one is asking for amazing spiderman 3 and its debatable that more people are wanting spiderman 4 with tobey instead of spiderman 3 with tom.tobey is the one and only spiderman he ain't a wimp like tom spiderman he ain't a weird mumbling goth like andrew spiderman.
Except, Disney doesn't ever show those effects they mention in the movie 😂 if anything the farthest they'll go to show "violence, aggression and insanity" from the villain would be putting milk in a bowl before the cereal lmao
Tide pods I’ve seen many great villains and I’ve seen them do pretty messed up things but I guarantee you not even they would do something as monstrous as that.
@@thescreenslaver8520 Honestly lmao I think the only monstrous moments an MCU villain has had would be Thanos sacrificing Gamora for a stone and Thanos snapping away half of the universe...
These were 2000s movies, a time where CGI was still an evolving tech alongside treating the original content with as much respect as possible. It's a love hate series for everyone, but for me these three spiderman movies were the building blocks of spider man movies later on
Nostalgia Critic: Movies need to show, not tell Jameson: Doesn't out Peter as the photographer Nostalgia Critic: *HMM I THINK THEY NEED TO TELL US WHY JAMESON IS DOING THIS RIGHT NOW*
To be fair in the comics there's a scene that would have worked beautifully in this movie but I don't know when the comic scene was made. One of Jonah's underlings is criticising Peters pictures after Peter leaves and asking Jonah why he's paying for such unprofessional shots and the comic cuts to Jonah looking at an article of Uncle Ben's death with him saying "the kid just needs some help"
The 1st Raimi Spider-Man is how I got introduced to the character, I even went to the premiere. I can always sit down and watch this film whenever it's on.
The 90s series and this movie in particular are one of the first things I've seen of Spidey! Around the time when my big bro dressed up as Spidey for my birthday party! My history with Spidey is quite an interesting one! 😉
I remember when Critic though TASM was so much better than the Raimi trilogy. The Amazing Spider Man films are either ostracized or simply forgotten about while the Raimi films are (at least the first two) are seen as nostalgic fun and all of them perfect meme material these days.

@@danielscott5673 I got bad news for you, THOSE and the praying in church for vengeance scenes by both Eddie and Peter are things the symbiote made them both do as it's hosts in stan lee's original spider man comic. Peter parker under the Venom Symbiote's influence would of course be a little awkward while Eddie as it's host would be more menacing, as Eddie was always a by any means sleaze ball whereas Peter typically gives no thought to open aggression/vented anger.
"You've got to explain why Jameson cared about Peter Parker" - he didn't, but as a journalist he protected his informant. For me it actually was the only clever scene in the movie.
I don't know, I kind of preferred comic's take on it. After buying the pictures from Peter one of Jonah's underlings asks him why he's paying someone so young for such unprofessional shots and the comic cuts to Jonah looking at an article of Uncle Ben's death and he says "the kid just needs some help". It really sets up Jonah as a tough love father figure for Peter.
I'm not sure that the Joker/Batman (perfect foils who obsess over one another) comparison really works for this movie. The dynamic between Goblin and Spider-Man isn't nearly that well-defined here, and the movie doesn't do enough to depict Goblin as being so insane that he doesn't care to learn an important detail about his enemy's identity. Sure, he's trying to make peace with Spider-Man during the rooftop scene, but later he's not at all surprised to learn that the answer is no. After learning Spider-Man's identity, he only hesitates to exploit it because it's Peter. It just doesn't seem like there's any reason in the movie that Goblin would have passed up an opportunity learn more about Spider-Man's weaknesses.
Sorry, but who the hell is in this "modern trend" of not liking Spider-Man 1/2 exactly? They've always been loved and regarded as some of the very best comic book movies ever made, even up to this day. So I'm really not following you here...
I think the problem is Doug has always shit on these movies and needed an angle to review them. If he just reviewed them and shit on them, people wouldn't like that, but if he says that everyone else hates them and he doesnt he comes off better.
The people who typically dislike Spider-Man 1,2 and 3 are the MCU Spider-Man fans who think these movies are just pure cheesiness and nothing more than that. It really start gaining traction when this one UA-camr made a video talking about how these movies have aged poorly and blah blah blah
20:09 I know it's not brought up in the films, but in the comics it's established that Jameson's first wife was murdered by a masked gunman, and as a result Jameson resents anyone who wears a mask-including superheroes
That dance used to be panned back when the movie was released. And we have Aldo Jones to thank for reintroducing him as Bully Maguire. That's literally the only reason he's more enjoyed now.
Omar De Jesus I must have lived under a rock.. :/ I loved these films when I was kid. Sure, when talking about the first film, SOME aspects didn’t age too well. But, as an adult, I adore how fun and cheesy it can be. It didn’t take itself TOO seriously and I think that was the point. 18 years later, the original Spidey films always hold a special place to me (even the third film..)
I was thinking the exact same thing. I've not seen any attacks against these films apart from the usual digs at Spider-Man 3. There is still so much goodwill towards these films that Sony added the Raimi version of the spider-suit to the recent PS4 Spider-Man game as part of a patch update.
Jacob Underwood Yeah but those movies came out before the PG-13 rating even became a thing. Temple of Doom and Gremlins are the reason the rating exist.
Jacob Underwood Those two films got the rating for different reasons though. Spider-Man may barely have any blood but the rating is a bit understandable at times. Not that I’m defending the rating system because I can agree that it’s pretty stupid.
Miyazaki Fanboy Parents taking responsibility for their kids is more important than ratings. Just don’t let them see stuff that they shouldn’t be viewing.
Lucas Mossman I think it’s a combination of the rating system sucking and violence in superhero movies changing in that which is what makes this movie being PG today possible
They're a mix between the comics Raimi would've read as a kid, and it was more mature in its themes as well. To say "ugh it's cheesy" is like saying "ugh it's got too many colours". Yeah, that's cause it's like the comics.

Doug is too young to have read these sequences in the comic books. For us older guys, the 'cheesy' scenes and dialog were very nostalgic. Something I would think he could relate too. :)
As for JJ caring for Peter... Well, he does. It's part of why he's rough on Peter as well - He sort of sees him as a son in a way. God now I need to go look through the comics
When Peter revealed that he was Spider-Man to JJ over dinner, he went on the radio to talk about how Spider-Man is a hero to everyone in the most big mouthed, J. Jonah Jameson way, and it's so perfect
My favorite versions of Jameson are this one, and the one from the Ultimate comics. The guy had a good reason to not like Spider-Man in those comics, and he did stand up for both Peter and Spidey when the times came.
"But it's so campy and goofy!" its kinda interesting how we've grown to take something like *spiderman* super serious. It reminds me of taking TMNT super seriously. Just... neat.
the original comics that were black and white and the turtles all wore red bandannas WERE very serious, they were dark and gory, definatly NOT for kids, at least not by 2020 standards. 90s however i had kids toys for r-rated movies
It’s also the case with Power Rangers, all of us who grew up with it are now trying to look at it through the lense of our older viewpoint of storytelling and trying to study the supposed mature themes and dramatic depth of these shows but we keep forgetting that they’re still first and foremost a show for little kids that we just have nostalgia for and so we shouldn’t really expect to see the kind of storytelling that aligns with the stuff we enjoy now in these shows
@@nestofskyrie472 and they did have goofy moments a bit especially with Michelangelo, the original TMNT comic was supposed to be a parody on dark and serious comics based on goofy premises
Xandu / XanduIsBored You do know he was mostly praising very specific elements of the two films (like Peters character and his love interest Gwen) He praised many elements of Rami’s trilogy, like the villains (acknowledging how memorable they were and how forgettable the newer villains were) and the story, but he preferred the characters more in the newer films (which honestly you have to admit was so much better in the newer films than the Rami films as you just saw in this review)
@@XanduIsBored Are you fucking serious? Even if those movies WEREN’T absolutely awful and a slap to the face of the character, these movies still did literally everything better. Even the MCU movies are better than the TASM movies.
I actually saw this movie for the first time last year. I think it's pretty good for the time it was made. It introduced me to the song Hero by Nickelback.
24:24 Jonah likes Parker, why wouldn’t he? He’s the only photographer in the city who can get pictures of Spiderman. Only the daily bugle has pictures of Spiderman because of Parker. And it’s meant to humanize him, show that he has some shred of kindness left in him, at least enough to not knowingly put another mans life in danger. edit:Also you make a complete joke out of the following scene skipping the best scene in the movie.
He's also never shown to be a true badguy. He's always had a sense of morality and integrity. Take Spiderman PS4, he does admit when Spiderman does good, but in his perspective it always seems like more bad happens when Spiderman is around then when he's not, and he's mostly correct. I've also never really thought of him as being anti-spiderman, more pro-regulated spiderman
It's just funny that Jonah never thinks to himself hang on a second only Peter Parker can get pictures of Spiderman do you think maybe his is Spiderman?
Parker just migh know who Spider-Man is but isn’t telling to protect his revenue source. In Duck comics Duck Avenger/Paperinik is though by everyone to be Donal Ducks friend so that’s why he gets away with knowing stuff about him. But of course that’s more comedic series.
bottomlipproductions Look at it through Jonah’s eyes when a kid who looks like a harmless pussy brings you a bunch of pics of a muscular dude doing the most extreme shit off of skyscrapers your not going to think it’s Parker unless it’s momentary and you laugh it off. Jonah’s questions his source for a second then brushes it off because he’s the head of a fast paced a competitive newspaper and decided he doesn’t want to know. Spider-Man’s one of the only Superhero’s with a secret identity that’s believable.

The fact that they brought J.K. Simmons back as Jonah in the MCU 17 years later shows just how epic a legacy he created with this movie.
@@N-GinAndTonicTM I think it was the ultimate spiderman cartoon but I'm not too sure.
it was 12 years after his last appearance in the role
Seventeen years ago? Ouch.
@@ol4037 no, Spider-Man 3 was in 2007, that was the last movie and it was 12 years before Far From Home
I enjoyed that J.J.J. defended Parker and played ignorance. Regardless of the character's prejudices, he has journalistic integrity. Plus his hatred of both masks and criminals further shows why he's defiant to Goblin. In that scene, they deepen the character.
👍yes sir, you are right.
He defended him because he needed pictures
*Pictures of Spider-Man!*
The only well portrayed comic character in the movie.
The part where Jameson won't tell the goblin about Peter just makes his character a badass
It's a hidden sense of Honor. He'll protect his employees from any threat
YEAH! As shitty as Jameson can be, you can absolutely tell that he values his company and employees (in his own way).
I thought the same thing too haha, but then I realized that without peter, he won’t have anymore pictures of Spider-Man.🤔
I remember asking that when I was saw this movie as a kid.
The "You're the one who's out Gobby, out of your mind!" Is as authentic of a Spidey line as Wolverine sayin' Bub at the end of a sentence.
But it doesn't qwippy enough.
RisingHero Jerk with a heart of gold
Like the guy is a jerk but not an asshole.
Plus he has a son of his own, so Peter might remind him of him.
Green Goblin in this was a more entertaining and memorable villain than anything from MCU. Screw Thanos.

David Barrios gonna cry?
I actually loved the scene with William Defo talking to his mask. He's a great actor
When I thought about that, I began to think that maybe he actually cares about Peter, even if he won't admit it.
@@SuperHuscarl that's how I feel. He's tough but he cares about him.
Remember that Family Guy cutaway where Peter thinks a guy is a jerk and learns he gives money to orphans with diseases
That’s the equivalent of JJJ protecting Peter even when he’s not paying him for those exclusive shots
I actually like that Jameson sticks his neck out for Peter. In most stories Jameson is a good guy and is just against vigilantes. In spectacular Spider-Man he does the same thing.
I am glad they included it here too
I remember seeing a part of a comic where Jameson was asked why he bothered to hire an amateur photographer like Parker, and he referenced Uncle Ben's recent passing, saying something like "the kid needs help."
Maybe I'm awful, but I just assumed he didn't want to risk losing the guy that consistently brings in spider-man photos for which he underpays
Are we really not discussing how awesome and on point J.K. Simmons' character is?
I guess not

He and Dafoe were easilly the most on point actors in this movie. JK Simmons puts far more effort in it then he is required to, for such a small role. Meanwhile Dafoe nails Osbornes insanity in the comics
17:35, To be honest, thinking about a dead loved one randomly and crying over it is normal, at least for me.

And sexual references
And the fact Mary Jane was seemingly going to get raped by a couple of guys before Spider Man saves her.
And the scene where he beats up the robber, and the scene where he goes mental wailing on the goblin at the end. That's why it wasn't rated PG over here in the UK
@@CitizenSnips you right it was a 12 wernt it I remember my little brother couldnt come 😂😂👍
I liked the part where Green Goblin crashes through Aunt May's wall and tells her to finish the prayer because typically the villain says something edgy like "god can't save you now" instead we get Goblin taking pleasure in her praying to god for salvation because he takes delight in her suffering and helplessness the way an actual evil villain would

It's presented poorly though.
Toby is a terrible crier tho 😂 even in the theatres when we all took this serious, the crying was made fun of.
Yep, which is why it's logical Peter would mourn Tony Stark in the MCU, but people would rather ignore that and focus on "bUt hE'S noT UnClE BeN!"
J.K. Simmons is easily the best part of this whole movie. Toby Maguire's awkwardness and Willem Defoe's pure insanity are close seconds, but Simmons is the true meme. The difference is we're laughing WITH him, not at him.

“I still don’t see why this is PG-13” the blood, deaths, brutal beat down by goblin at the end, and goblin getting impaled on his on glider. Need I say more?
He was reaching hard with that one
When you remember Doug's track record of having possible, short term memory loss and failure to put 2 and 2 together on things that even a casual child would notice on most of the films he's reviewed, it isn't surprising either.
And Mary Jane's nipples. In the rain. Wearing a T-shirt.
And Green Goblin murdering people with bombs and machine guns

I don’t think Jameson defending Peter by not giving him up needs to be explained at all?? 🤔🤔he’s never been portrayed as a bad person, why would he sacrifice an innocent person to save his own skin? Especially someone who works for him. He’s clearly a man of integrity, and we see that when he fires Eddie Brock for providing the bugle with fake Spider-Man photographs. As much as he hates Spider-Man, he’ll never string him up using fake evidence to do so.
Emperor Reign exactly he shits on Parker but why would he just allow the kid to be killed off?? Doug was being a clown with that comment.
Joe James Indeed, very nitpicky on this occasion 🤔🤔
Emperor Reign the amount of nitpicks during the time square festival fight alone were laughable.
Another reason is my personal theory that he knows he is Spider-man and creates articles demonizing him. Just cause he knows Peter as a teenager and Spider-man will and is always trying to prove him wrong. He knows if everyone knew it would put people he knows, himself included in danger. Along with the fact he only pays him so little to keep Peter Humble.

nostalgia critic: I missed the part where that's my problem...
Ok. Boomer.
The WindyREDPanda Very original
I disagree when you said these movies could’ve been PG. The Spider-Man Goblin fight was very brutal and so was the Doc Ock hospital scene in part 2.
he never said spiderman 2 didn't warrant a pg-13, he just said the "PG-13" value in the first one is extremely piss poor. I mean, unless you faint at the slightest of blood, then yeah. Even now it's pretty mundane and... not even that gruesome or even that needing of a pg-13. ESPECIALLY comparing it to nowadays what pg-13 is and how it was all handled before.
I'm 24 and the evil face Norman makes in the mirror STILL scares me. And a guy getting impaled is NOT kid-friendly.
You have to remember what millennials like Doug grew up with. Sex, violence and language were synonymous with content for young people back then.
To be fair, the scale to what it means to be PG Rated was very different back then.
Plus the scene where he beats up the robber
NC:"I can't imagine why these movies are PG-13"
Plays the scene of the Goblin vaporizing people with theirs skeletons turning to dust, then the scene of Doc Ock tentacles butchering nurses with sounds of skin crawling screams and bone cracking, then the slow motion scene of Peter blowing up his friend face in half.
Me:"Somehow neither do I"
Pffbt kids stuff.
ratings are overrated.
Leandro Botchkarev actually apparently the reason it’s pg-13 is due to the scene in the rain where you can see Mary Janes nipples throught her shirt..... I wish I was making that up but that’s the reason
32:12 - Also this entire scene.
@@mrcarryon
That sounds like a rated R reason
Jameson might dislike lots of people, especially his subordinates. But he’s not gonna just let a man in a green goblin outfit who just killed people at a Macy gray concert murder a guy he knows is actually a protector and not a menace.
What do you mean?

24:35 It’s called journalistic integrity. A smart journalist protects their sources. But is it really so unbelievable that Jameson would protect Parker out of the goodness of his heart?
He doesn't know he is Spiderman to him Peter is just a kid.

@@larsliljeberg3970 His hatred for spidey has been overblown alot in recent media. Nowadays it borders on paranoia.
It shows that he might be a POS but he has journalistic integrity when it comes to not giving up the people that gave him that information.

I know right? That part is so unapologetically comic book. I’ve always loved it
I don't know.

I'll show myself out.
"But it's so campy and goofy!"
its kinda interesting how we've grown to take something like *spiderman* super serious. It reminds me of taking TMNT super seriously. Just... neat.
the original comics that were black and white and the turtles all wore red bandannas WERE very serious, they were dark and gory, definatly NOT for kids, at least not by 2020 standards. 90s however i had kids toys for r-rated movies
It’s also the case with Power Rangers, all of us who grew up with it are now trying to look at it through the lense of our older viewpoint of storytelling and trying to study the supposed mature themes and dramatic depth of these shows but we keep forgetting that they’re still first and foremost a show for little kids that we just have nostalgia for and so we shouldn’t really expect to see the kind of storytelling that aligns with the stuff we enjoy now in these shows
Yeah, it's like critics/adults judging My Little Pony.
@@nestofskyrie472 and they did have goofy moments a bit especially with Michelangelo, the original TMNT comic was supposed to be a parody on dark and serious comics based on goofy premises

Yes. Not everyone is a fanboy here
Remember, this is the same dude who said The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2 are better than the Rami trilogy. Make of that what you will.
Xandu / XanduIsBored when did he say that bullshit?
@@Anonymous.Throne In his Old vs. New on the Spiderman movies
Xandu / XanduIsBored
You do know he was mostly praising very specific elements of the two films (like Peters character and his love interest Gwen)
He praised many elements of Rami’s trilogy, like the villains (acknowledging how memorable they were and how forgettable the newer villains were) and the story, but he preferred the characters more in the newer films (which honestly you have to admit was so much better in the newer films than the Rami films as you just saw in this review)
No just the first one
@@XanduIsBored Are you fucking serious? Even if those movies WEREN’T absolutely awful and a slap to the face of the character, these movies still did literally everything better. Even the MCU movies are better than the TASM movies.
Nostalgia Critic reviews the Spider-Man Movies.
Me: I’m gonna put some dirt in your eye.
I actually saw this movie for the first time last year. I think it's pretty good for the time it was made. It introduced me to the song Hero by Nickelback.
@@legoking6165 I love that song!
When Nostalgia Critic says The Amazing Spider-Man is better. That dirt is going straight into that guys eye
@@filmfangirls9163
Me too.
Oh boy, yeah.
But of course that’s more comedic series.
bottomlipproductions
Look at it through Jonah’s eyes when a kid who looks like a harmless pussy brings you a bunch of pics of a muscular dude doing the most extreme shit off of skyscrapers your not going to think it’s Parker unless it’s momentary and you laugh it off.
Jonah’s questions his source for a second then brushes it off because he’s the head of a fast paced a competitive newspaper and decided he doesn’t want to know. Spider-Man’s one of the only Superhero’s with a secret identity that’s believable.
Still one of the best movie compared to today's superheroes movies

Why are these movies seen as bad?
Because that's the popular opinion of the internet for this week.
@@HolyShitItsHim1 I guess because it's a series that's been memed to death, its "Bad".
No not the internet, just doug
Cosmonaut variety is the one who started this whole hate wagon. Hating everything is now considered the new cool.
I like the Raimi movies. I just wish he didn't play up the "Peter is a huge loser" thing so much, and that Mary Jane was more like... well, Mary Jane.
@@TheAzulmagia no spider man movie will be better than the PS4 game or spider verse don't even @ me
