This video is arguably the crispiest video I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Sub and Pelagos are both outstanding watches. Tough choice. Slightly different dynamic, however, very very close. Well done video.
The Pelagos 39 is a nice watch, no doubt. But what I love so much about the classic, non-ceramic, no-date Subs, is that they are so unagitated, so simple, so obvious. There is nothing fancy, everything has a purpose. The design is here for 70 years and the roots are even older. It is an art-deco masterpiece, an industrial design icon. The first watch in my life where I want nothing to be different. The Submariner is the big kahuna of sports watches and will always be.
Have always wanted a 14060, but just wasnt wanting to spend quite that much for one, especially with the prices now. So recently settled on the Pelagos 39. Absolutely amazing watch and definitely has me wondering if I ever will pursue a no date sub now. Great comparison and video. Thanks.

I ended up in the same boat; a Submariner at retail didn't seem realistic for me, but I still ended up waiting 9 months for the Pelagos 39. That said, when I objectively review what I want in a dive watch; 1) good bezel action, 2) strong lume and 3) adjustable on-the-fly clasp, the Pelagos delivers. While I'm still in the honeymoon phase, I do think this satiates what I thought I wanted out of a Submariner.
Fun fact: a 124060 is just called a sub (as the original and first submariner never had a date). It's the date sub that you need to append "date" to it. So you basically just have "a submariner". The best and most iconic one :)
I got it yesterday , initially thinking of the Black Bay 58 and 54, even the 925, but once the Pelagos 39 was on my wrist … game over! I tried the BB58 and 925, nice watches but they didn’t do it for me. The Pelagos 39 may not weigh much but still feels substantial, while being appropriately sized and thin enough. It is a stunning watch that you need to see and try.
Rolex is antic super car while P39 is brand new. I bought P39 because i had 5.000 USD limit for myself and its titanium. I buy watches for wearing not collecting. It was easier to wear since its lighter. Its my everyday watch
For me Tudor Pelagos 39 is much better than the Rolex Submariner.. Easy to use. I mean you can easily wear it and go anywhere. Titanium! thin, light and modern. Kudos to Tudor!
Great comparison. I love that 2010 Sub and adore the 39.....I have just got o get one. They are freely available in the UK. Its good to see tha sub on your 7.5 inch wrist, same as mine; I was convinced that it would be too small for me. Still keen on the 42mm 500m date one, too. I think the Tudor is a perfect modern interprtation of a no date sub.
the current sub would dust the pelagos , and I love that version of the Tudor, but it's still the Rolex which will hold it's value better , it will be interesting how well that Pelagos stands 13 years from now in comparisons

That's the difference between current Rolex and Tudor owners. Rolex owners care about investment, Tudor owners just want to wear their watch. Tudor nowadays is what Rolex used to be.
Agreed. I sold my 80s Sub and now own a new Pelagos 42. There are far too many Sub copies (and homages) out there nowadays, and even the new Subs seem somewhat passe nowadays.
@@casperskestrel I'm inclined to agree, I did a deal with a friend recently which saw me get his GMT Master 2 (pepsi bezel, jubilee bracelet), it's a tad small on my wrist I think and I've had to add a couple of horrid not gen links to it. But I've been wearing it for about 10 days now, and I think I could keep it as my daily wear (over my Starbucks Sub). That's a shift in my mind over the past year or two, a Sub was the watch I always wanted. That's changed for some reason.
Shame they didn't do the Pelagos 39 in steel. The original Pelagos 42 was a very thick watch and benefits from being made from titanium but the 39 doesn't need it.
Both look fantastic. Maybe pelagos looks more modern. What i dont like from pelagos is the dent shape arround the bezel. Much nicer on Rolex. Also dont know how pelagos would age. Titanium seems to be soft and scratchy. I think both are built by same manufacturer, so probably their lifetime is similar. I have Rolex from my grandpa (40years old) and it still works perfectly. I would like to know if a pelagos would also live 40years. Is not a cheap watch (5000€). What i dont like from Rolex is waiting list. Such a long waiting list.
Thanks for the review. I've been a longtime Submariner fan but the increasingly larger profile of the watch since 14060/16610 models is not a good fit for my smaller wrists. I'm excited to explore the Pelagos 39 as an option that I could purchase new while providing a similar aesthetic to the Submariner that is a better fit for both my wrist and budget.
Happily moved on from my 80s Sub and am now the owner of a Pelagos 42. The Tudor is a lot better made/finished than my old Sub, and nobody asks whether it's real (which is a fair question for people who wear Rolex because there are so many fake Subs around). I wouldn't consider owning another Rolex now, especially with all the waiting list nonsense their ADs pull these days.
Yea the Tudor looks like the bezel overhangs the case which is why you got nearly 40mm. Rolex crystal didn't sit flush with the bezel which is why it's thicker.
BB58? 58 is Stainless Steel, no crown guards, more retro in appearance, matt dial, has a red accent on the bezel pip. Has an aluminium bezel insert, faux rivets on the sides of the bracelet, pretty much the same movement as the Pelagos 39. It also has a domed sapphire crystal. The Pelagos has a radial dial and bezel insert, is more toolish and is thoroughly modern in appearance and is, in my opinion, infinitely superior as a result. If you can afford a Pelagos 39, just get one. It's a modern classic. The only reason I can see for not buying it, is if you like to have a date complication. It's amazing!
Pelagos is Titanium with ceramic bezel. No black bay has either of these. Its made to look modern as opposed to the retro style of the black bay line. I like the 42mm original Pelagos better than this 39mm version personally.
The Pelagos is Tudors modern interpretation of a dive watch. The BB 58 (and 54, and the Heritage and probably some others!) are basically homages to the classic divers of old.
My Pelagos has back play on bezel 2 - 3 clicks also came off. I have tried others 42 and 39 all have back play brand new in AD no one seems to mention that. Don’t believe the hype.
The fact that the Pelagos and the black bay58 exist, is killing my desire for the sub, I’ve wanted a sub for a while and this is breaking me man, I hate the fact that I could have a sub and then someone can have the Tudor , and it’s the same fricken watch! , I’m circling back to the explorer or dj rn it makes me sad tbh , I would love a sub but wtf the pelagos is the same but better tbh idk , all this shit is overrated tbh.

A 2010 Submariner should not have a bracelet with hollow end links. Rolex began using solid end links in the early 2000’s. Not to mention, a 2010 Rolex Submariner bracelet absolutely has screws in their links. Sounds like you have a bit of a Frankenstein.

The resale or trade value on Tudor is trash. I have Tudors and Rolexes. A.D.s are not interested in the Tudor after they have unloaded them on you. But the Rolexes are valued. Don't waste your Rolex $ on Tudors. Keep saving up for the Rolex.

Tudor looks more modern. The Rolex has the classic 1970s look. Rolex has the stronger name. Tudor has a better price value.
The rolly will still be worth at least what you bought it for 10 years from now, the Tudor will not.

How has it held up? I heard the titanium scratches very easy and many have reported that the lume markers are falling off.

Absolutely the p39 it's cheap and cheerful accurate Tudors huge military history strong well built watch loads of rolex DNA.. can't go wrong 🎉
The sapphire glass on the Pelagos is far nicer, at times you simply think the glass is not there.

I have the Pelagos 42 with date, and used to own a Rolex Sub Datejust, and I've got to say, the build quality and finish on the Tudor feels more solid
I have 3 Tudor watches the pelagos 42 is by far the fav The blue dial is so crisp I have an original black bay and a black bay steel and gold GMT

Tudor is just so good
On my P39, the lume on the hands are noticeably dimmer than the rest of the watch. Did you have your P39 hands replaced by Tudor?

I have a 5513 Sub that I bought in 1969 in Vietnam and it has Ben on my wrist for over 50 yrs now. Think a Tudor will last that long?

Pelagos 39 is a lovely looking watch, but it really feels cheap in the hand (May be a psychological trick due to weight of titanium)
It’s not that much lighter in weight. In fact, surprisingly heavy for titanium.
The Pelagos 42 is hefty and is an outstanding and versatile watch.

The "Snowflake" is the signature of Tudor; always thought all their watch lines should have the snowflake hands and hour markers
