  • The Tudor Pelagos 39 has been in my collection for about two months now. I purchased it immediately after release, and my impressions have changed just a bit since I first got it. I wanted to review what about the watch is different with more time and answer some questions I've had since I picked it up.

    Fact is if you wear a watch it's going to get scratched. Doesn't matter if it's a Patek, Rolex or Tudor, all are prone to scrathes. They are capable of lasting a lifetime. Just get them serviced once in a while. They're meant to be worn, not to be locked away in a safe.

    Two points you brought up here that I completely agree upon: First- Titanium grade 2 is more prone to scratches than grade 5. Most of the manufacturers use grade 2 and if there's scratches they'll be visible. Titanium is lighter, no argument about it but scratches on SS can be easily removed by just polishing. I've had a Titanium watch and no matter how Titanium oxidizes the scratches will remain visible. I'm not familiar how scratches on Titanium watch can be removed and if that will hurt the surface. I don't have problems with SS, since I've removed scratches before and it worked out perfectly for me.
    Second: the clasp- some people find it too wide and it'll depend on the wrist size to determine whether it'll look weird or not. If yes then the rubber strap should be used which btw is a nice treat. After all it's all about if you like the watch or not. Some watch fans are all about protection others don't mind the wear and tear. Whatever it is, enjoy your watch and use it in good health. Good review by the way!

    re: toughness of the bezel. I have really worked out my Pelagos 42, including hitting a big black steel post, while running at night. It was a massive clunk! There were bits of metal in the grip around the bezel, and my immediate thoughts were of how much this was going to cost. I got home, and picked the metal shards from the bezel grip with a safety pin, and noticed that the teeth were almost perfect. The metal shards were from the steel post, not from the Pelagos. The watch was not damaged except for some slight marks on the top of the grip teeth. To sum up, this is a tough watch. If you want a daily wearer, trust any Pelagos. Why would you want a overly shiny Rolex? The finish is cool, stealthy, and will last.

    • @timtim2949
      @timtim2949 Рік тому

      Note that the titanium on the 39 is not the same as the 42. The 42 is made with a harder grade of titanium and might just survive some more punishment than the 39.
      Good to hear about your watch, though.

    It looks pretty used for only 8 weeks. And you can clearly see that brown titanium tone. Something you really have to like. For a real dive watch it lacks of a bezel you can easily read, especially when it is hit by sunlight coming through the surface when you are diving in the ocean. Therefore it is "just" a desk diver.

    Wow, seems like you scratch up your watches quite a bit. The pelagos you have had for 2 months lots of scratches already, it would take me 2 or 3 years perhaps even 5 years to even get that amount. To be fair I don't wear a watch to work I work in maintenance wearing a watch would just get in my way, I would need to take it off and put it in my pocket so many times in a day. Therefore I only wear a watch on my days off and only when I am going out somewhere or if I happen to be on vacation.

    The one thing which I feel Tudor is not telling people and arguably why should they! Is that Titanium grade 2 is a very very soft material! One drop and its hello dent! The same cannot be said for grade 5 tiatanium as well as stainless steel! FWIW, people that come here with a sticky bezel, once I got it worked out, I no longer have to push down to turn it. There is a catch mechanism at the 12 to help lock it in to avoid play, I assume. But now the thing clicks like a dream. This is a re-make of the classic 1970's Subs, with all the modern tech of today. I have a Sinn too, and it is pretty much scratch proof, but lacks the elegance of the Tudor. I doubt it very much, because of that I think titanium watches will not hold value as well as stainless steel, that's why I avoid them. I don't like the light feeling either as it feels cheaper. This is a great follow up video. I particularly enjoyed the bezel and light play discussion, as well as showing the "ghost" bezel look in the video. I absolutely loved this on my now 7" (was slightly bigger) wrist. I find the BB58 borderline small. Maybe it's the bezel being almost 40 that does it, but that and the lightness really gives it a vintage Sub feel on wrist. I was fortunate enough to try on a vintage Sub only a couple weeks after trying the P39 and was surprised at how similar they feel. Obviously the Tudor has a much more solid build quality than those old Rolex bracelets though. I really would love a blue version with those bezel characteristics and the same more tempered blue from the FXD. That would make me snap and text my AD.

      @@HarrisonElmore if Breitling and Longines can use it, so can Tudor. It’s used in many, much cheaper watches than the Pelagos. You’re most certainly right tho, it is mainly a cost thing: keeping costs down to maximise profits.

    Scratches are things that just don’t bother you after a few years. I’ve got a Breitling Aerospace that’s been all over the world and is beat to shit. The scratches actually look pretty cool and build up a patina. You don’t see scratched watches online. Why? People are terrified of losing value and baby their watches. If this stuff bothers you go buy a swatch. And forget watches what about sports cars? They cost way more and get beat up in no time. Don’t sweat the small stuff dudes. Get them worn.

    I expect my watches to scratch. That's how it's supposed to be 👍 But how bulletproof are these movements? I'm to be honest not that hugely into the idea of luxury watches, but this one tempts me. However, I would have be to quite certain that it would take anything I'd throw at it. If I'm spending this much, I don't want to feel like I have to use my Promaster instead when going back country skiing etc. Then I might as well keep the Promaster as the main watch. Thing is though, I don't feel quite confident enough on the toughness of mechanical movements. (And I don't want to pay $5k or so just to find out) I'd feel much more comfortable splurging on a "one/final watch" if I knew it could take anything. A GS 9F would probably make me confident in that. But they have no models with the design and features such as this Pelagos. Would love to hear from someone who really, really put it through its paces, what that was, and whether it could take it or not. But maybe I'm delusional for hoping that a mechanical watch can be treated harshly like a true hardcore sports-watch.

    Great review. I appreciate hearing your longer term thoughts. I was really excited for this one, but trying it on in the store and comparing to my BB58, I was underwhelmed. I wish they kept the old recessed indices from the larger Pelagos, or added some kind of frame around them to give the dial a bit more depth and detail. It's a cool watch and a decent value for what it is, but I think they could have done better here.

I'm glad I saw this, my dad recently got the OG 42mm Pelagos and I was thinking maybe I'd like the 39 but I was hesitant on the g2 Ti and yeah it scratches just as much as I thought but what I didn't think about was the length of the clasp. My BB36 has that same issue, so this is a hard pass. 37mm Spirit remains the next watch for now.

    Great job capturing the ghosting bezel.
    Hopefully this style becomes a Tudor staple, like Rolex and the Sub. My worry with Tudor pieces, as you alluded to, is there’s always ‘the next thing’ at the moment. The BB Pro felt a bit out of date as soon as this dropped. Styles aren’t getting much time to settle into the range. Maybe this is Tudor just having a bit of a re-set and things will settle for a couple of years now, bar some colour/material changes.

    • @HarrisonElmore
      @HarrisonElmore  Рік тому +1

      I tried! Glad it came through. I think Tudor will keep doing what they're doing and rotating through watches and styles, discontinuing the stuff that doesn't work. I'd imagine in the end, their goal is to have a catalog like Omega where there's something for everyone. Then Rolex can keep to the core models while Tudor can play the everything is available game. Just a hunch based on the current rate of releases and how well that's working for them.

He mentions in his initial review of the watch that he wears it while jogging, working, etc. So basically he is wearing the Pelagos 39 like a G-Shock, so the wear is definitely going to show.
