Thank you so much for posting this. Which I had seen this a year ago. After saving up for my dream kitchen for years I ordered kraftmaid cabinets from Lowe’s. Tons of small dings & scratches. Cracked frames, but the worst part was the licensed installer I selected. He apparently never heard of a level & my husband had to adjust many of the uppers. Be careful out there people & do your research diligently. Use only installers whose work you have seen

I am in the nightmare of Kraftmaid Cabinets. Everything you went through I am going through. If anyone watches this I support this 100%.. Take it seriously. I too will not ever go this route again. Save yourself a nightmare and go with a local cabinet shop. Not a big box type store. I appreciate this customer is calm and presents facts and does not name call. It shows his level of integrity. But trust me....Kraftmaid/Big box store is a nightmare.

I had the same problems! If not worse! Longgg story short..spent 6 months waiting for cabinets only for them to arrive damaged, so they ordered replacements while my entire living room was stacked with the other boxes, I waited another 3 months, installer refused to start on my kitchen at all until all cabinets arrived which in my opinion they could have at least gotten things going because I needed electric and massive demo etc. anyway, new cabinets came and 2 more months passed and I don’t even have a start date! And this is after I was the one communicating and contacting HD and installers every time! I became frustrated and at this point had a demo’d kitchen AND my entire living room unusable because of all the boxes…I called corporate and made it through several rounds of managers and their “solution” was for me to be patient..I waited some more weeks (can’t remember) and I was asking for AT LEAST a start date on the books…I got ignored from the installer at this point and so I lost it! We started to ask for a refund (because HD requires 50 percent of the installer price down) and also a discount on the cabinets for all of this inconvenience…we ended up getting the refund on the installation but HD refused to do anything else. Literally as soon as we got the refund the regional manager stopped replying, even the escalation dept. stopped replying. I took it to the attorney general to make a claim and HD wrote them a letter saying they refunded our installation as if that was a “solution” I still was sitting there in that mess that I mentioned…they had zero compassion and throughout was never communicating at ALL! Blamed me at every turn for why this or that didn’t take place…in the end I found a new installer and that is when I found out all of their measurements were wrong (sink not aligned like this video) areas where cabinets had to be cut etc etc. and because I did the refund they now reeeally were really not wanting to reply to offer solution because “they were out of it” and “no longer responsible” at this point since I was the one that cancelled 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ they basically tied my hands to cancel..all in all I wasted an entire YEAR and nothing was done and probably had to pay more because new installer had to do all of this rearranging. Oh, and they also oversold me on tonsss of the miscellaneous small materials..I have an entire shed full of boards and kick plates..it is clearly way too much, not just a little bit I’m talking about here! RUN as fast as you can from Home Depot! Honestly, I don’t even want to shop here at all! They are crooks and don’t care about customers at all!! Someone even started a website homedepotsucks.org with pages of issues…so it is hilarious that corporate literally treated me like I was overreacting and not patient enough, and how “they’ve never had this kind of problem before” -you know that kind of bs rhetoric to make you feel like you’re the problem 🙄

Being that you are a "GC", I am surprised that, A - you bought from The Home Depot, B - worse yet, allowed them to perform the install, and C - were not present to preside over the install. You have full overlay cabinets with square outside edges - of course you need fillers for clearance and operation of the "tall pantry area" - Should have been 50" - 54" wide drywall to drywall to make this happen. KraftMaid, as always, does a fine job in producing the product. The damage on the one cabinet - likely in shipping or install. The oven cabinet selection could have been better. Did THD not show you and include you in the layout process. Again, as a GC, you should have been more involved and known better. This was a tough video to watch.

I just put one of these Kraft made kitchens together, hardest kitchen I've ever installed. The cabinets are out of square, the rails and styles are warped. I'll get one cabinet screwed into the next to it and the plywood vertical sides will be at different heights while rails are aligned at the top of cabinet face, while the styles right next to one another are even top and the bottoms don't line up. Night mare install.

Thank you for posting it. I am in the process of designing my kitchen with Both Lowe’s and Home Depot design centers; both designed my kitchen, one put a lot of different small cabinets in my kitchen to fill up the spaces . I have a small kitchen!! She replacing my 24in wide bottom cabinet with 2 small. Her goal in my opinion was to put as many cabinets she can. The sketch of my kitchen was looking like appliances and “fence planks “ in between. $31,000 minus 30% special.
The other designer design it in minimum around 12,000. Not asking if I would like the drawers to close softly, do I need baking sheet cabinet. Her goal in my opinion was sell for less but quantity.
In both cases I didn’t feel involved in my kitchen design.
Keep in mind people they don’t do custom cabinets they work with sizes they have that deferred in 3” between them.
I was wondering about my choice. Thank you for confirming my decision to go with a local cabinets maker.
We are not that rich to spend our money to be disappointed. It would be a big issue to me if my white cabinets would have scratches and not lined up.

They say if you signed the contract you are responsible for the making sure the cabinets will fit. I bought painted cabinets and had someone from the company come out and look at some dents in my painted slab doors. Yes they were natural "defects" in the wood. But shouldn't they have been filled prior to painting? I can't fix it cuz I'll never be able to get the same finish.

This is a sad experience. I can offer a contrasting one. I just this week got my new Kraftmaid kitchen. I used a Lowe’s designer but then I downloaded the spec book and read nearly every word, learned a lot, made many changes and corrections. I had a very experienced contractor who went with me to the final consultation to be sure everything would work. Cabinets arrived on time and perfect. Small kitchen, tight budget, I bought painted MDF cabinets for $6,000 plus install. I love them!

  • @terry0599
    @terry0599 3 роки тому +19

Ok, Ill weigh in here. Im a builder. Most issues with cabinet scuffs come from the delivery guys and installers. The ones I see that you have just have them send out new doors. The pantry needs to be taken apart and made right. I know its a bit but you don't have your finishes in place so get busy fixing it. Pull them out and have the carpenters fix the opening, re drywall. Its your house so just get it squared away. Boxes lines not perfectly inline. They won't be, its wood. Wider bases especially will warp. Sometimes I will place a 1x between the back of the cabinet and the front rail to straighten it. Truth is it can happen on any cabinet. Ive had it on 70 k custom jobs. When the counter is on you won't see it other than what you already are seeing. I don't think the cabinets are bad, mid grade. Its Home Depot. Find a local cabinet company and get your own installers. I never go to Home Depot for any materials. On the bottom of the cabinet there needs to be a toe kick that runs across all the cabinet then the shoe moulding. Oh as a builder stop saying "I spent 25k and expected more". I have had similar issues with 70k and up kitchens. Like others saying here, I hold them accountable and they don't get paid until there right. I have held up 30k until a cabinet is replaced, believe me they can do it. I don't care if the cabinet is shipped hi priority or over night at three times the cost of the cabinet, thats the sellers problem and I insist on getting a good cabinet or they don't get paid. Thats the advantage of dealing with a local supplier. So you can make this kitchen right. Stop expecting Home Depot to do the right thing, you need to fix it. Have them replace the damaged doors. Install toe kick at bottom of cabinets. I would either order another drawer front or a complete drawer for under the oven so it doesn't have that open space.
Oh I know this will get me in trouble, stop using Behr paint......Stop using Home Depot. You can fix this and make it right.

I agree with you except for the Behr paint which I love. I'm also a GC, own my own Remodeling Co. The issue here isn't KraftMaid Cabinets per say, it's Home Depot. I'm shocked the poster states he's a GC but didn't go over the design layout before he signed off on it? Hummm, something isn't right here. I can't tell you how many kitchen remodels I have done and my Clients have purchased KraftMaid cabinets, I have never had an issue that they didn't quickly resolve. ALL Cabinets can and will get damaged in transit, it's a given. Not just KraftMaid! I tell all my clients to expect this, and the time line to get new cabinets or drawer fronts manufactured and shipped.

Wow , we were very close to going with HD Kraftmaid also. We decided not to due to the price. Just cabinets and a small island without any spacers , crown molding and a 3" filler at the top for the crown was north of 25K. We ended up going to a local place and we could not be happier. We actually upgraded in the quality of the cabinets. 3/4" plywood sides and birch doors with all the things I mentioned and it was 15K on the dot. Three weeks later they were delivered. I sure hope everything works out for you and Home Depot does the right thing. These prices were without install. I installed myself with a buddy of mine.

IF YOU HAVE 48 WIDE CABINETS, THE DRYWALL OPENING NEED TO BE AT LEAST 48 AND 3/8. , THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN HAVE A PERFECT FIT TO THE OPENING IS TO INSTALL THE CABINETS FIRST THEN INSTALL THE DRYWALL . CABINETS ARE NOT 100 PERCENT SQUARE , THEY CAN BE OFF UP TO 1/16”

Ah the home depot designer, I did a bathroom renovation once, and back then adding a Jacuzzi tub was what the stand alone tubs are today. We layed out the space and she chose the tub size. The thing arrives and my contractor says " nice tub, but I don't think I have seen one that small before. I got it in and no way an adult could use this thing. Then it dawned on me, the designer was about 4'6" tall- so yes for her it was big enough.
It was a custom order and I had to eat the 60% restocking fee. While I was still in the store I watched someone buy it at 50% off. So if you think about it I paid for the cost of the item and at 50% off they still made full profit on it.

what was your rough opening on the inset pantry cabinets .it looks like they put (2)24 in cabinets in . if you roughed 48 your screwed with the DW return .It wont fit in 47 in. They should have allowed for fillers in any cabinet door that is recessed behind a wall or offsetting depth cabinet so you can open the door fully. You could remove the return and pull the cabinets out flush with the wall and use scribe molding. On the island your installer is to blame that install is very sub-par.I bet if you layed a straight edge on the face of any side of that island its wavin at ya ! should be straight .Good Luck

I ordered Kraftmaid from Lowes mid June '21. Cabinets were delivered Oct. 28, 2021 with nearly 3/4 cabinets damaged (broken, made wrong, scratches, etc). They said replacements would take 4 weeks and I said that was unacceptable. They then said 3 weeks. When I hadn't heard from the delivery company I looked up the order and it had Dec. 17th as the delivery!! I lost it! I called them and they tried to blame the representative for telling me 3 weeks. That afternoon the representative emailed me and said it was her last day. Sounds like she was the fall guy for a mismanaged order. The quality control is poor. Be cautious and think about a local cabinet maker that is reputable instead of Lowes!!

Just finished installing the cabinets we purchased from HD and this is very similar to my wife and my experience with Kraftmaid from HomeDepot. Three cabinets didn't even match what was ordered. One cabinet was so misaligned and badly constructed, that the rollout drawer, couldn't roll out. Took another six weeks to get replacements, which delayed install. My wife had to hound the designer to get the replacements reordered.
The competence and the desire to follow-through for a complete job, at Home Depot, has really fallen off in the last decade.

Same with HD. I will never do this again. I am flipping a house that needed a nice kitchen. And went with HD for convenience. They do all the coordinating so I could keep doing other stuff.esdon learned.. This has completely thrown the time line off for this remodel. We should be done and ready to resale by now....not waiting on cracked replacemens and missing cabinets to arrive. This location of the house has few contractors so HD was a viable solution. No....instead it's a viable nightmare. I would be money ahead had I paid a cabinet shop to travel here and build cabinets. Very sad. They blame the pandemic. Ok....but no kitchen after 9 months??....

I'm just doing some research and came across your video. My husband was going to install the cabinets and now I'm not so sure that's a good idea. I may look elsewhere for our kitchen cabinets. It's hard to say whether or not this is a universal issue. I would assume that Lowes and HD contract with installers at a reduced rate, so this would contribute to potentially rushed work in the field. But again, hard to say conclusively. If you can afford it, I would definitely hire the installation if for no other reason than recourse if something goes wrong (even if it takes forever to work it out). The color is Pebble Grey! Good luck with everything!

I installed Kraftmaid from HD some 15 years ago. They're not terrible but not great. Everything is MDF. They are NOT made to last forever - they started falling apart after about 12 years.I still believe something that expensive should last forever as long as you still like the look of it, so if you have the opportunity to buy custom from a local true craftsman who'll use cabinet-grade ply and hardwood, definitely go with your local craftsman.

I worked there for 13 years, maintenance of all equipment. I had to know how to operate all the equipment from start to packing on the trailers. I was always amazed at how hard I had to work versus how the customer satisfaction was viewed.
These people worked so hard to maintain quality versus how many had to be assembled per day per hour. I still do not see how any kind of quality was passed out the doors.
At the peak, 18 lines assembling roughly 400 cabinets per shift was insane. 18,000 units per day was pure profit seeking as far as I am concerned.

I can't fault a lot of these people for their perspectives because they likely don't have the right frame of reference when it comes to spending lots of money and/or the construction industry. To your question, I have to say that after a couple years now I am 90% satisfied with the quality and features of the cabinets. If I ever get around to making a follow up video I'll be sure to discuss all of the pros and cons after living with them for a while now.

The installer should remove all the doors prior to installing the cabinets, that as a rule eliminates minor door damage caused by the installation.
As for the Home Depot design service, they are trained in house, and as a rule have no actual experience beyond that training.
They do not visit job sites to confirm measurements, and offer opinions based upon job site conditions as a custom cabinet builder would do.
A custom builder would simply refinish the damaged doors.
In this case the installer was probably one of Home Depots sub contract installers.

My advice is to spend a little extra on the details like top and bottom trim and the side panels that are exposed. It makes such a difference for such a little bit more! I also had a cool cabinet installed on the side of my pantry and it's storage for mail, keys and clutter that ends up lying around. It even has a place to charge your devices! This is one of my favorite splurges!!!

We are gong through this right now. We have had tile reinstalled once. Still not right. Contractor ignored us asking him to stop, and broke a shelf that had already been out of place because of another contractor. Part of tile was done with spacers. First round, 69 non matching tiles were installed. Grout is different. Cabinets arrived, but STILL missing pieces and one drawer was defective, one cabinet door is not finished properly. There are many more issues. I contacted corporate today, but oh if only we could have our money back, I would gladly let them tear out the mess that is my kitchen. It takes all the joy out of a remodel, to have this happen. There is no accountability. Private companies will send out a supervisor to check on things. Home Depot can't be bothered until the problem is so bad that it is unavoidable. I'm really so upset that I let myself trust the Home Depot. Wish we could just rip it out, get our money back, and start again. We bought American Woodmark.

I would have put the fridge in that closet instead of the pantries. It's not that much more of a walk from the other appliance, and it would have given more wiggle room to fit in a thin tall cabinet, or one of those spice racks that you pull out. Or I would have put the oven stack in that closet with a small base cabinet and counter top. I would then put the tall cabinet where the fridge is flush against the wall. That little cabinet right of the fridge looks clunky. Especially with these open-stlye rooms that refuse to go away, I suggest to most of my clients, to not make the most prominent wall a sea of stainless steel appliance that you're always looking at, unless they are covered with a door front. I'd rather get that focal wall as much “furniture” as possible when there's a living space involved. Most of the Home Depot kitchen designers seem to be winging it, in my opinion. They're not hyper focussed like good designers are who practically feel like they're designing it for themselves when doing it. I designed a kitchen for a friend on one of their brand's website. Gave him an itemized list of all the cabinets and where they go and the HD associate just took what I measured out and decided to changes base cabinets for the hell of it leaving my friend with ZERO base cabinets and instead, all drawer units. Never again.

Total lack of coordination, shoddy workmanship, lip service from the store we ordered from< Corsicana , Texas>, 4-5 weeks from cabinet install until counter top install, which means that period without kitchen plumbing, then more time until the plumber shows up( week) and when he does he wants to charge more than than the already paid plumbing charge because it is a "rebuild". I am sure this is his usual scam. I ran him out of the house, hired another plumber(tonight) and may have this done tomorrow. Will fight Home Depot for our money back paid for plumbing. WTF is a new sink and counter but a rebuild? Do not ever ever use Home Depot for this kind of job. I would not hire them to put a door knob on. Dont use the "Designers" at the big box stores. maybe 1 in 50 actually know kitchen design. They take anyone and give them a Kitchen design class that gives them a certificate, but the certificate means nothing. Get an interior designer (not decorator) that designs kitchen. They have been to 4 years of schooling for these things. Youll kitchen will end up symetrical where needed, and highly functional. Small details go into making a kitchen look better that most people dont think about (such as the range cabinet you talk about in the video). Its normal to have to cut the opening to fit but there are 3-4 size options to start with so that drawer on the bottom fits properly.

As an ex certified kitchen designer, and a current contractor, I have to ask, why on earth would you use a box store to buy cabinets for your own home, let alone your customers?
Secret most people don't know, HD and Lowes "designers" are rotated through other departments, they are employees, not career people, and if they aren't commission, they have zero f*cks to give, 5 o'clock comes the same time every day. P.S. they prefer appliances because there are spiffs.
Secret nobody knows, years ago when I took 20/20 cad training, Cape Ann Mass., it was a level 1 two day course, literally day one was how to start the program, install walls and windows and placing a box (cabinet). The class was 3/4 full of HD and Lowes employees, a bunch of us met for dinner that first night, they told us they were done that day, leaving in the morning. There were 3 levels at the time. They don't even get a certificate of completion for level 1, probably a good thing to ask a designer if they have one.
They literally get just enough information to get themselves into trouble, but what do they care, most of their mistakes cost you money.

You should look at their Heritage cabinets. These are the cheapest most awful things to install. You can't inspect them before buying and many of them have busted out corners. I installed 5 uppers in 20 minutes, I hit every stud and there no "extra" holes in the backs of my cabinets. The base cabinets were a much different story but I should ad that there is no glue to join the face frames, only a ga-zillion 3/16th in staples. The base cabinets have no 45 degree corner pieces to screw down the counter tops so you have to buy appropriate brackets and make a jig so you install them all the same height, then you need to install a 3/4 in thick spacer block to the counter top and you know why? If you put your counter top onto the cabinet the damn drawers won't open which leads me to another dilemma. When you add your 3/4 in block and put the counter top on the cabinets you can see so much day light over your dish washer you want to rip out the works and drag the whole kit and caboodle to the managers office and tell him to shove it. In addition to that great flaw, the painted cabinet screws they sell you are of such soft metal the heads strip out and if you can get one to bite the head snaps off. Plus they don't self tap worth a shit but they drift off in another direction missing the second piece...so frustrating...what's happened to American quality? Why do I pay premium prices for crapola?

Couple of issues here. First, the pantry issue should've been solved prior to cabinets being ordered. Since you're a GC, you clearly should've known the corner bead issue and mud buildup could cause this problem. I'm curious to see how it was trimmed out with no room for a "return" or jamb extension. Much of the other concerns are problems Home Depot or Lowes ( I know Home Depot for certain) would have solved either in the form of reimbursement or replacement or possibly both. The waviness of the island would be almost unrecognizable if not completely unrecognizable with the countertops installed.
21k on kitchen cabinets is NOT a large amount of money. Custom kitchens are easily in the 50-150k range. I think you're absolutely nitpicking and looking for problems. Call HD or Lowes and demand 10 percent refund. Otherwise, be happy with the kitchen and I'm sure it came out terrific once it was completed.

I feel bad that you had to deal with these issues. Its pretty clear the designer didn't look at her drawings, and the installer could care less. Did anyone from the Home Depot come to measure this space? This is why custom cabinet shops are around. We physically come and measure after sheetrock, build a quality cabinet, and we do the install ourselves, that way its on us if something doesn't fit or gets damaged during the install. All the box stores are great at selling and designing , but you pay the price when it comes to service after the sale. There are so many things that the designer and contractor should have done differently. Hopefully you got this resolved in a timely manner. I'm not sure what part of the US this was, but $25k for that seems to be high. Without any dimensions, just visual I would say an average custom cabinet shop that does their on finishing would be around 15-20K If it was me, probably around 15-16k that includeds 3/4" cabinet grade plywood box, solid face frame and doors / drawer fronts (MDF center panel for paint), 3/4" hardwood dovetail drawer boxes, two pull out trays in every base cabinet opening, and soft close doors and drawers as a standard. The problem with "local cabinet maker" concepts is that they often aren't in business 2 years down the road to support a warranty claim. I've known several people who had great cabinet makers do work for them, owners of cabinet making businesses, just closed up shop and began doing other things or they went to work for a larger producer. Recourse is extremely important, and unfortunately the big box stores that run small businesses out of business can stay around long enough to honor a warranty or be sued.

Many here are recommending "local cabinet makers." I called a local cabinet maker when first planning my kitchen reno and was quoted, 'Even a TINY kitchen STARTS at $60,000 with NO appliances.' They were stressing typical starting price at $65,000 - $70,000. I was heartbroken. I respect that you get what you pay for and good materials and craftsmanship matter. But, if your kitchen is small and overall house value is modest...it feels unreasonable. Still looking for a "happy medium" option.

All the exact same issues here with Kraftsmaid cabinets. We just sent them ALL back. The craftsmanship was awful. Cracked frames. The reveals and styles were all wrong. The very top uppers overhung the other cabinets by at least 1/4" and couldn't be covered up with the skins so, there would have been a huge gap. One base shipped without two of the door fronts on the cabinet. As The Common Carpenter mentioned below, "The plywood vertical sides will be at different heights while rails are aligned at the top of cabinet face, while the styles right next to one another are even top and the bottoms don't line up." SAME.EXACT.PROBLEMS on mine.
Thankfully, we ordered through a local building supply company and they took them back. But, now, we're faced with both cost overruns and having to start the process of ordering all over again with a different manufacturer. So, here's another 6-8 weeks or more.

We purchased Kraftmaid cabinets from Home Depot. They were not inexpensive, almost $20,000. plus another almost $6,000. for installation and we don't have a large kitchen. We are extremely disappointed with the quality. Side panels and accessories do not match the cabinet front and appear to be made from a different material.
Both Home Depot and Kraftmaid are offering no solutions. We are being forced to hire a custom cabinet shop to fix the problems, without knowing if we will be adequately compensated for the cost, not to mention our time and inconvenience while our kitchen is demolished.
Very sad to see both these companies failure to take responsibility for their product. My recommendation is not to buy cabinets from Home Depot or Kraftmaid. They will rip you off by selling you one thing and delivering another.

It happened to me too. Don't rag on this guy. It all sounds SOUNDS so quick and convenient so you can be doing other aspects of the remodel. Well lessoned learned here too....it's a nightmare. I live in a rural area and contractors are hard to get here. So HD was the solution. Quick boom bam done. No no no. I would have been money ahead to have hired from a real cabinet shop from the city.. you are correct....but drop being critical. This guy is trying to keep peoe from falling I to the same nightmare trap. Kudos for that. And the fact that he does have contractor skill should tell your avwrage unskilled customer to RUN.

Actually, Thats what happens when you spend $25,000 on cabinets and then go cheap on the installer. See I you would've hired a professional cab installer he would have made sure eerything ends up square, problably shim in between the cabinets to fix the bowing.

Installation was part of the package offered by HD. Had I opted to use another installer or installed myself, I'd have had little to no chance of recourse whereas by using HD's contracted installers I was able to hold the big box store accountable through the end. And for the record, professionals cut corners all the time as well. As a builder I have yet to subcontract a cabinet installation from any source that I've been 100% pleased with.

Did you ever hear back from Home Depot or Kraftmaid?

    • @zachmarsh6099

After months of useless back and forth, HomeDepot ultimately tried to settle for under 10% of the total cost. I refused and am now pursuing legal action. Since this video there have been several follow-up visits from the installer, HomeDepot reps, and the finished product is still subpar. Stay tuned for a follow-up video in the very near future that will cover these many issues.

Zach Marsh wow, that is too bad. I hope you get a satisfactory resolution. Would you say the problem is more with the installation and Home Depot, or with KraftMaid? We are considering KraftMaid for our new kitchen, but I don’t want to run into the same problems as you have.

    • @zachmarsh6099
      @zachmarsh6099  5 років тому +2

I would say Kraftmaid products are generally very good. The issues we encountered in terms of quality were cabinets showing up with cracks in face frame, warped boxes, some funky slides on one of the tall/narrow pull-outs, and paint defects. But ultimately the installation is what caused the biggest headache. Truth be told, if you were to walk around our kitchen today, you'd probably be content with the finished product. The average customer likely wouldn't pick up on several of the installation issues, but as a medium to high end remodeler myself, and considering how much I paid, I was particularly critical.

Kraftmaid is incredible, but Home Depot & Lowe's professionalism does not match Kraftmaid's standard. I work for a company that does everything and we have people coming in a lot saying how un-trusting Home Depot & Lowe's are when it comes to perfection. I hope you get this resolved because it's definitely the companies fault. Both designer & installer. Mostly designer but the installer did scratch up the cabinets.. This is a two person job sometimes..

    • @zachmarsh6099
      @zachmarsh6099  5 років тому +2

I mostly agree, but as I mentioned, there were several defects in the paint and hardware. And they build the doors with a panel insert that is simply rotated depending on the desired door style. I found it very strange having a beveled detail on the inside of all of the cabinet doors.. does make it feel a little more modular/cheap.
Without a doubt, Home Depot (and probably even more so Lowes) have a very substandard process for managing these projects. Consider that they are operating as the general contractor and therefore are ultimately responsible for the finished product and resulting customer satisfaction - you'd think they'd be much more concerned about the quality of their products and the subcontractors that they hire for the installations.
But the more I consider who the real culprit is in this entire situation, I'd argue that the installer created the biggest discrepancies, many of which simply can't be reconciled without reconstructing everything.

The fact that that whole island wasn't even close to sq, walls not straight and symmetrical and it showed on your flooring base shoe is why you paid only 4k for the install🤷‍♂️. 🔨 hope all ends well

How is the installer going to make a non square box square? Is a taper actually standard so the cabinets slide in better? I have done a lot of projects ( non cabinet) and would expect everything to be a pretty simple project if things were manufactured correctly. I have done one kitchen and as I recall it was fairly easy. Screw the cabinets into the wall, a little trim, and good to go.

Thank you for uploading this. I could see the detail of how this is constructed. My initial suspicions are correct. These are really no better than the cheaper cabinets, with exception or the back and side rails for reinforcement of the sides and back. Now I can duplicate the way that yours are reinforced by simply adding furring strips. You have plywood box construction and mine is particle board, but I dare say my cabinet boxes are thicker. I paid a little over a grand for my mine and I'm installing them myself.
Everything in the stores is all smoke and mirrors. Buyer beware.
I think you got ripped off. For what you paid you could have gotten high end hardwood RTA cabinets with 3/4" solid 5 ply or 7 ply baltic birch plywood construction. I'm sorry you ended up with what you got, and yeah the cabinet sides are going to bow unless you add wood as stiffeners.
I considered similar cabinets to yours but after seeing the quality in the store I thought I could replicate that for thousands less. And I have, by far.
Then again I suspect I am much older than you, so I'm comparing what the poor quality is today vs the good quality that was so common in the 60s.
I honestly think for what you paid you could have had a cabinet builder custom make your cabinets or go the RTA route with good hardwoods.
I'm sorry this happened to you.
