Its amazing that people follow what others suggest, say, or claim to know... We are all interior designers if you have a passion for change, we all learn by our own mistakes and we all have our own style that suits our needs...too many times designers think they did an awesome job and owners cant wait to do personal changes. Its good to listen and take advice....but follow your own heart.
As a color consultant, I agree, 100% that color should be checked out at home under your own lighting. Lighting is the key to color and all the paint stores have fluorescent lights to give off a yellow tone. Colors are infinite, light numbers, and people can get easily overwhelmed. No one realizes the importance of my job until they make a huge investment and choose the wrong color.
I couldn't agree more. Trends are not part of my life and doubt they ever will be. My B.I.L almost feel over when I said I didn't want granite counters in my kitchen. I guess he thinks because he likes them, so does everyone. Don't get me wrong, they look nice, it's just not for me. My current kitchen project includes using light wood looking ceramic tile to create a durable butcher block counter top appearance. I guess one could say I'm going against the grain. 😂
I clean houses for a living. So when we redid the kitchen, I definitely knew what to avoid! The trendy navy blue is a nightmare! I clean for a family that spent a fortune redoing the kitchen with navy blue lowers. Within months there were visible chips and dings all over. Every water spot shows up like a spotlight. Every grease spot leaves marks you can see across the room. We have a small kitchen, so we did go with white. With an incredibly durable surface that repels water. Wipes down like a breeze. And after having wood cabinets, it was amazing how much it brightened the small space. We also chose white because we can change the look easily and inexpensively, by simply changing out the decor, or repainting the walls every 5-10 years.
Navy or a very blue cobalt is my favorite color, so against all the tans, I use that as an accent color throughout the house. Good point about it showing water spots, but I will use a much lighter shade of it in the kitchen lowers, otherwise it would be too much. That blue is the color of blue jeans and has become almost a neutral, but point well taken. "Chips and Dings" have nothing to do with the color, and let me guess, this is a high gloss finish. White has its problems as well.
@@rockshot100 The reason I mention the chips and dings is because I also have a family with white kitchen cabinets. They aren’t great at taking care of them, and they have a ridiculous amount of chips and dings. But, you don’t see them until you are a foot away and looking for them. With the navy blue, the white primer underneath shows up with slightest scratch, and looks like food spills all over it, that are visible from 10 feet away.
@@heatherqualy9143 That makes sense. Weird that the paint doesn't stick to the primer, maybe it is the primer? Usually the primer comes off with the paint. I bet it is a latex primer, which I have never used.
I painted mine with General Finishes grey (instead of primer and instead of sanding) and then Aubaussen Blue Chalk Paint and they have held up great for 5 years, no chips and they look fantastic. Of course they are a farmhouse kind of paint anyway, but I didn't do a "chippy finish," and they have not chipped. Just put a coat of poly on top BY HAND with a sponge or a rag, very lightly.
As a professional painter whos done residential, commercial and industrial jobs you for got the ULTIMATE adavice... 1.Sand like crazy everything with a sponge sanding block 2.Apply an alkyd oil based primer like Zinsser, yes it stinks like crazy, keep windows open and fans running and apply with a 5 mm roller and brush it out gently not leving straks and globs...and finally... 3.TEST,TEST,TEST BEFORE STARTING ANY PAINTING!!!... PRACTISE,ORSCTISE PRACTISE...GOOD LUCK 3.
I am an artist who is very familiar with color. His takes are very solid. Many people wouldn't consider the floor when picking colors, but you should, for example. I don't agree with him100%, because there are always exceptions. I like this guy, he is straight forward and doesn't treat color selection as this mystical, cloudy, feely thing. I know he is trying to sell the boards but do paint an old piece of drywall or something first because a paint chip doesn't reveal the color in context, and you cannot get a good idea of what an entire room will look like with your furniture, floor, etc., and you cannot tell how light or dark it will look. I picked a green that looked somewhat blue, but no it is too yellow irl.
I really like the idea of painting a large piece of something to see how it will look at different times of the day. The small cards of color won't do the trick.
The only time I like two toned cabinets is when you mix black & white. Otherwise it looks like no one could make up their mind. If you cook a lot you don’t want dreary dark cabinets nor do I like multicolored backsplashes where your kitchen looks cluttered if you have anything sitting on your counters. I love these videos. You have such common sense!
Navy & white is a classic color scheme just like black & white. Same theory just different. I can't get behind the lowers & uppers being actually 2 different colors like hunter green & mint green.
When I bought my dream house, I fell in love with the warm, honey-colored pine cabinets in the kitchen. So welcoming on a cold winter's day, but still light and airy on the hottest summer day. I also love my beautiful, white kitchen appliances. Guess I'm just old-fashioned. 😂😂
@@shadrach6299 They make the kitchen so much brighter and are much easier to keep clean. When I bought the house, there were all stainless appliances in the kitchen...Samsung...which all broke down over a couple of years...and I replaced them with older, used, white appliances that I got for a fraction of the price of new ones. People were selling their good quality white appliances that worked well just because they wanted stainless.
@@hokeypokeypotsWe bucked the stainless steel trend when we renovated a basement suite, by using white appliances that we got for $200 total (fridge and stove and microwave). They were being sold by a fellow who was renovating an apartment/condo he'd just bought and was renovating. The appliances had belonged to an elderly lady who kept them in immaculate condition. We put dark cabinets in and it all looked fabulous. Personally, I'm not a fan of stainless. It's hell to keep clean. And my (brand new) stainless fridge started breaking down a few years after we bought our present home. The stove has rust spots all over it!! I'm sorely tempted to switch back to white.....
@@shadrach6299 Stainless tarnishes, scratches, shows fingerprints, dents, stains and is a bear to keep looking nice. Why is is even a thing? Much prefer white.
I renovated my kitchen over 20 years ago and I still love it today. I don’t think “rustic” ever goes out of style and I still get compliments on it today. My cabinets are a distressed cypress green (like a dark sage). They are a keeper for sure! I cannot stand white kitchens, they require no thought and are very boring.
Great video, I especially like that you tell people that if they love a trend then they should do it,. Renovation and decorating can be fun and exciting making it easy to lose sight of the fact that you're investing time, money, and effort and that you will probably be living with your choices for quite some time. I chose two-tone for my cabinets because my kitchen is small and doesn't have a lot of light. The upper cabinets will be white and the lower gray with yellow walls. Your suggestion to bring the color home is on point, light causes the color to look different. I used sample paint, painting areas on each wall and cabinet so I could see how the paint would look, I joked that it looks like someone was making a painted quilt but it helped me to see how the paint looks in real life. I also chose brushed nickel pulls that are flat against the surface, getting my clothing caught on hardware is a pet peeve of mine and at 4'11" it happens more often than not so that was a consideration for me. Which is an important point to address when thinking about details, 'does it work for me?' It doesn't matter what the trend is, basing your choices on your specific situation will be your best investment.
I have a white kitchen and I can tell you, it doesn’t matter what color your cabinets are, they all need to be wiped down at least once a week. Stained cabinets get dirty too.
So true! I had medium tone cherry cabinets for 23 years, and they had to be wiped down weekly. Dust would begin to show in all the moulding cracks & crevices if I skipped a week.
Yes!! Finally someone said. My husband wanted me to pick dark because according to him white gets dirty fast. I told no it doesn’t matter the color you still have to clean them.
I believe white cabinets are classic. Wiping them down periodically is not the issue. Doing it regularly keeps them from becoming sticky and/or dull. White is also a unifier between rooms of other colors.
I have dark wood cabinets and was thinking about going light a couple of years ago. Now I’m happy with my wood cabinets as it seems like colors and earth tones are making a comeback.
Why fix it IF it is not broken? Golden oak here -- Solid wood, and still nice despite being installed in the 1970's I've painted the walls different colors, changed the curtains and the canisters and the fridge/dishwasher but the sink and stove/oven are still working fine.
I have dark cabinets too. I just got a quote to paint them. It's just a small kitchen and they want $7000! So, I cleaned them and spot-treated the scratches. They will do for another few years.
I have been around for along time. I have had many different colours in the kitchen. Every time I change from white to another color I can’t wait till I can go back to white. Sometimes you just have to stick with what you want and not somebody’s else kitchen.
I'm currently going with Sherwin Williams Black Fox cabinet color. It is a beguiling black brown shade not for the faint of heart. I love going off the beaten path! I typically get very positive compliments on my home from contractors and first time visitors. So that's positive feedback; individuality and one of a kind
Thank you for the validation. We just finished finalizing the choices for our upcoming kitchen remodel and my interior designer helped me avoid all of these mistakes.
I just ordered a colonial blue cabinet with a charcoal stain with distressing! I’ll have soapstone countertops with a soapstone sink! I’m blessed to ordered a distressed pewter faucet! I’m very excited! My friend has an all white kitchen. It’s cold and looks like a morgue.
We all have different tastes… her white kitchen isn’t what you like, but she does! She probably won’t like your distressed cabinets and might think they look like they were picked from a garbage pile. To each their own! 🤷♀️😁
Thank you for your humble opinion. This is our first kitchen in the planning stage. The contractor suggested moving frige to the other wall to add move cabinnet space with center island. Our old refrigrator sticks out about 7" the rollout drawers are definatly a must!
I think what color you choose for your kitchen cabinets depends on the sixe of your kitchen. I have oak cabinets that were stained the standard honey oak color. Ugh!!! I painted them a slight off white color with large black hardware. I get tons of compliments on my kitchen.
I had white cabinets for the first 18 years of living in my house. They had to be wiped down daily. My new wood cabinets can go a whole week!! Woot! Kids and white kitchens is a lot of work.
Recently painted my dark wood cabinets and changed the dark speckled granite. I chose white cabinet paint-there are loads of white shades-and a Cambria countertop with a design pattern of light gray and warm tan striations. Cambria suggested the three colors that complemented the countertop I chose. Also I used the quartz up the wall to replace the tile. It’s a small kitchen and brightened the space considerably. I didn’t paint the cabinets because they were in bad shape. It’s very attractive and blends well with the open living space and furnishings. Expensive but no regrets.
We rented a house in Florida that had lovely solid cherry kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The house was sold to someone else, and when we returned the next winter all the cabinets had been painted bright yellow and blue. They were ugly! We were told that the new owners thought that cherry wood wasn't "Florida" enough. My advice would be that if you have good quality solid wood cabinets, don't just slap a coat of paint on them. Build your color scheme around them.
Kitchen cabinets are one of the largest surfaces in the kitchen, albeit vertical surface. White goes with everything. So if you get tired of your countertop choice, or your backsplash choice, or hardware choice, or your accessory choices, white cabinets will match with all of your changes. You can make your white kitchen pop with colored accessories, like a few vases, small table lamp, etc. Instead of handles in sliver, gold, brass or black, how about adding colored handles to your white cabinets? Blue handles on a white cabinets for a coastal vibe. Sage green handles for a Mediterranean look? Colored hardware will add that cool pop of color to white kitchen cabinets that can be changed out easily an inexpensively!
Don't be afraid to paint whatever colors you feel like. It's just paint. Everyone has the same kitchen and the same decor, and it's a ridiculous amount of conformity. It makes for a boring formulaic world. People can be terrified to be themselves, especially because we're drilled that houses are an investment. Your house is your home and being yourselves is actually great. Who gives a toss? Do what makes you happy. Not what's in. HAPPY. Oh, and people are going to paint over whatever you have anyway to mark their territory. I've seen it, half a shade of nothing because it's 'theirs' now. We can't help it.
I have lived in many different homes in my lifetime. Mt favorite by far was a bright yellow an while kitchen. The cabinets were yellow the walls white. All painted in a long wearing semigloss paint. Made cleanup a breeze. The floor was a very light pine color. Kitchen was small but with the bright colors on the walls, cabinets, and dropleaf dining table and chairs the room always looked clean and cheerful. I plan to redo my current kitchen in the same colors as the flooring is the same coloring.
I love this. Growing up, we had white cabinets and yellow walls or a yellow breakfast table. Yellow was my mom's favorite color and our kitchen always felt homey and kind of happy.
I absolutely agree with doing sample paint in the room to be painted. I painted our little den off the kitchen Repose gray a few years ago. It was a lot of decorators' favorite! Our son was helping us and he said, "cool purple." WHAT??? It's not purple, it's not purple!! But guess what. He was right. That room was facing north with a wide porch and lots of trees. So that light was very gray. It looked freaking lavender. Not the look I was going for. A year later, I couldn't take it anymore and we re painted.
I'm a professional painter and I've had a few clients have similar responses to that color. It was one of their first choices until they put up a sample and then ultimately changed their mind. Not sure I've ever actually put it up.
I personally don't like white anywhere in my house. It's cold, even 'warm' shades. That said, my kitchen is olive green two-toned and after 11 years still I still love it💁
Colors are fine because this house will not be sold for a long time. We picked the color that we liked and my son will like it also because he wants the house when we aren't around anymore. That means that the house will not be sold in the next 40 years at least. Don't care what the next family wants, we will make this so we are happy...
I painted some cabinets recently Sherwin Williams Modern Grey. The color looked good while doing them, an off white creamy grey. But when I put them back up, with the lighting and surrounding area they looked a little pinkish, there is a drop of maroon in the tints. My client was experimenting with lighting (it looked less pink in natural light, especially at dusk or dawn) and other things, not sure how it has turned out.
I wanted white cabinets on the uppers to make the space feel more open but I ended up doing a different color on the bottom because I realized if it was white everywhere and I have 3 animals the bottoms would look terrible. So I went with a medium blue for the bottom high traffic area less maintenance
I gave a galley kitchen with 1 small north facing window. So after extreme study, I have decided to do the following. Remove upper cabinets on either side of the window. Remove the small window, replace with a 4' x 5.5' sliding window above the sink. Pulling the cabinets forward even with the fridge. Counter tops depth will become 30" instead of 25" on both sides of the kitchen. The uppers, fridge cabinet, and pantry ceiling to floor cabinets on the other end will be a soft off white with light wood stain inside and lower cabinets stained the same light stain.Adding upper cabinets on the right side to the ceiling. On the far end on the right side putting in an armoire piece cut narrow to "15" deep, stained light wood color. Converting the lower cabinets to wide drawers. Keeping my double oven, gas cook top, new granite composite sink/faucet/, quartzite counter tops, adding pot fillers over cook top and pet's bowl. Recessing an eyebrow arch niche with a quartzite shelf over the stove with side lights, and a center fandolier in ceiling with LED recessed lights 3 on either side. Paint color and tile are still undecided.
I went with black traditional kitchen cabinets. I love them but everything else is a light color white, beige, and grey. I do have to dust all the time but that's the trade off for a color I love.
In certain cases I get why you want a finish that wont show everything (like I hear really dark floors show every spec of dust) but in most cases I like it. I don't want messes to be hidden. I want to see them so I can clean them up faster.
I live in a beautiful neighborhood. I have noticed no matter how well done a house is when it's sold, buyer come in and redo to their liking. I will never consider what a buyer might like because that is toooo wide open. Regardless of the possibility of selling in future, I will apply the colors I love. In one room I have white background heart wall paper . For contrast I have navy blue bedding. Women often say it makes them dizzy looking at it. I say, " I love it! That's what matters always in my house.
People are funny. They'll buy a house because they love the style of the previous owner but still rip everything out and start afresh. That's why estate agents love neutrals. Too much personality, and it puts some people off because it's not their style. So if and when you want to sell, redecorate. Have the decor you want and enjoy it, then paint everything off-white to look bright and spacious before you leave. I'm a bit of a weirdo. I didn't want a house with a brand new kitchen or fireplace because I knew I'd end up ripping it out. I got a place that was livable. I lived in it for 5 years without touching everything. Now I'm redoing everything. I mean everything: replastering, new roof, more electrical sockets, new boiler, asbestos removal. We've found every little thing we hate about it and are changing it. Hopefully, that means we'll get it all right. We know how we use the space, what the natural light is like, where it gets hot in summer or cold in winter. We know what needs improving and how before we make home improvements.
I'm deciding on the dark green color for my new kitchen now! I'd love to see a pictures. Leaning towards Forest Hill green (BM) right now on lowers and Simply White uppers.
I would also note that if you are doing a full kitchen remodel, cabinet color should determine what flooring color you go for. Not the other way around.
Black is SO much harder to keep perfect than white. I fell for the beautiful black island trend about 20 years ago. It - showed - EVERYTHING. Same for my 'beautiful' black washer/dryer set. One single kitty hair was glaringly obvious. Also, do NOT put high gloss anything in a kitchen. Every smudge, fingerprint, or rag streak will show. Even if it's perfectly clean, you'll see tiny imperfections. If there's the smallest dent, it shows. I either go with eggshell or satin or even a matte. Black + gloss? You may as well have tortured yourself with the brass and glass trend of the 90's. Pure hell. As for glass - keep it high. I'm the idiot that put a glass display cabinet in my island. Right at kid/dog height. In just a few hours of family fun, those cabinets are covered in dog nose prints and sticky fingerprints from the grands. That doesn't even count how nerve wracking it is to protect the little ones from crashing into the glass and getting hurt. I agree with the trendy part, but there is one issue. It's sometimes hard to tell what's trendy. Trendy vs timeless is very hard to differentiate. The timeless white kitchen was timeless, until everyone started doing it this decade. In 15 years, the next generation is going to say 'ew! That looks like my grandma's kitchen.' It really is all about perspective. But trendy items (stools, appliances, dish towels, dinnerware, crocks, spice sets, cabinet knobs) are awesome. This is where we all get to play without fear or guilt. And that might include ONE cabinet, the island, or the cabinet with the stove vent in it. One stand alone cabinet that you can paint and repaint to your hearts content. Next mistake: Not leaving ANY wall space to hang anything. I didn't realize this mistake until I got out my hanging magnetic knife holder and cast iron pans. Minutes later I was standing, staring, holding my spice rack. I'd maximized my cabinets so much that there wasn't an inch left. And that's my last regret: Not leaving enough to play with. When your kitchen is designed down to the inch, you have no where to grow. Nothing that an be switched up. You're just stuck where you are. And I don't care how awesome it is, you're going to want a little wiggle room.
And we are back to just don't follow trends. Choose a colour you like or no colour at all (as in wood). It's your house, do what you enjoy and ignore all the people who call them mistakes.
Yes, I cannot tell you the amount of homes I've looked at that have red red accent walls or bright yellow kitchens. It's so bizarre. I like relaxing colors like greens blues and whites with wood. Those homes really gave me a headache.
I started off with white doors on my small kitchen, then I hated them, they looked cheap and tacky. I changed the doors to a dark blue-grey for the bottom and stainless steel veneered doors for the top. The kitchen looks a hundred times better.
Your comment raises a question. My house is just being built and soon I will be choosing my interior items. I want LVP flooring throughout, and I thought about blue kitchen cabinets since I really like that color. What shade of “wood” look flooring would go well with a Wedgewood blue type cabinet, a traditional honey oak or dark mahogany or blonde ash, etc? I didn’t really understand about the color wheel reference. Thanks in advance.
You don't mix warm and cool colors - it looks bad. For example if you have honey colored cabinets, you don't want to install an ashy colored wood floor. If you go with a cool pallet or a warm one at least for the woods you want complimentary colors. I would look at some magazines to get an idea of what you like paired together before you commit. Also remember the colors look different at different points in the day, Morning, afternoon and evening. I brought wood samples to our new home and looked at them at various points of the day before deciding on a color.
Thank you very much for the pointers! I'm not good with design nor colors, I do like simple/natural/nature - coastal/resort with a bit of accent. Please advise what color of cabinets (currently light wood) I should paint or stain to go with butcher block countertop for my tiny house? White wall, floor natural wood & opposite wall/ ceiling also light wood. Thank you very much!
Swatches can lead to a real disaster. My husband and I were choosing our outdoor paint color for our house. I wanted sage green. We painted a swatch and it was great! So we thought. My husband, heaven bless him, did a much larger swatch. OMG. It was like looking at a yellow green horror. We did another large swatch and it was also, well, icky. So he did a whole wall outside and we looked at it in all parts of the day. We finally ended up with the sage green I wanted and it looks spectacular! If we had gone with our first two choices, it would have been a complete very expensive disaster because I could not have lived with it.
Best and Fav Paint Person. 😁 High Gloss White are the staple, but Quality Paint is required, so they don't yellow and dont stain easily. Black Cabinets are great when against a light background or if dark background "must have good Lighting, multiple types of lighting. I like Stainless Steel, in MidCentury, Modern, and/or an Industrial Style Kitchen. Serious Cooks ...
I like the two tone ,I have white on the top,and Sherwin Williams lark green on the bottom, both with matte black hardware,it looks retro,I love contrast , and looks great with my terra cotta tile floor.
Remember when you test your paint samples be sure to look at them at different hours of the day, in different areas of the room. Color can look different as light hits them at a different angle. Some colors change more than others. I think the colors that change most are labeled saturated colors? I could be wrong about that label. I'm old and sometimes don't remember correctly. I would also recommend picking paint at a paint store like Benjamin Moore, and not a big box store. These stores have a better reputation of mixing your paint more true to the paint chip you chose. JMHO
Mine are 2 and I ordered differed colored knows for the handles. It's very eletic but I love it. We are moving I to a new house this week, and I'm going to do teal counters and backsplack with chili red cabinets and marigold walls. It's very southwest and I love them! So cheerful in the 6 months of winter 😅
My tops are bright white(northern Michigan, one window facing north) bottoms are a custom green I mixed myself. Appliances are white. Kitchen is so much more welcoming than the previous brown and maple!
My white cabinets rarely show any dirt! I have white on the top, and now I’m painting a beautiful warm gray on the bottom that will go well with the floor in my small kitchen.
Just got a new home with 1990s honey oak cabinets and brown floor tile. Hideous. No easy task to find the perfect colors to paint these. Oh, and blue laminate toned counter. Zowie! Trying to find colors to make the room go from drab to wow.
In the photos I see many kitchens with above-bench cupboards that go right to the ceiling. Do you use ladders? I don't understand. That cannot be called useful storage.
When I redid my house I did what I liked and didn't worry one else about resale value. I plan on dying in this house. In other words I'm not selling it anytime soon.
I totally agree. I have the same set up so went with the “off-whitish” color that is a softer look, and get color from accessories. I also agree with an earlier comment that all colors need to be cleaned anyway!
what do you think about doing the cabinets a shade or two darker than your trim? I'm doing white dove walls with edgecomb gray contrast trim, and wouldn't mind having my cabinets a bit darker though? maybe pashmina by benjamin moore? does that create a disjointed look or can it work?
What is it about the institutional / sterile / angelic theme to their kitchen or even the whole home. It takes some doing to pick colors (it took me 27 samples to get my color scheme right). Express yourself there is no fun in just being vanilla.
OPINIONS PLEASE!!! I'm thinking appliance white on walls, ceiling and cabinet boxes. To blend with new black and silver appliances: Black trim, silver raised panels on doors and DF, with frames black also. This way, the stove and and fridge don't stick out like a sore thumb. It's all the same color combo. Am I on the right track?
My kitchen cabinet doors have at least four layers of paint and varying sheens. Top current color is poorly executed white. Im neutralizing the shared kitchen family room to all white. It is/was white, datk green and powder blue. The interior in several cabinets is the darkest green. I decided to repaint the interior only of two uppers and its taken me a week ( Thanksgiving and PTO) and I m still not done with the two. Im ready to pay someone or pour gasoline! White is the option because its what I need for my sanity.
I had a long list of projects I wanted to get done before Christmas. I think I have knocked out only three and halfway through a couple others. I had to have a talk with myself that my list was going to run into 2023. 😢 And so what? Seems we’re always behind with every project! Be kind to yourself. No one will remember what your kitchen was painted. They’ll just remember how relaxed and fun you were over the holidays. Be nice to you ❤.
I need your help! We're getting custom kitchen and dining room cabinets made (kitchen and dining room are in the same room, of a small bungalow in Toronto) and I don't' want to make a mistake with the undertone. Our floors were put in last summer so I'm trying to choose the best greige that will work well with the floors and the north facing room. Do you provided colour consultation services?
The amount of time I clean reclean and loudly scream obscenities about cleaning my white kitchen cabinets has been my personal hell for telling my husband to paint the perfectly lovely wooden cabinets white. Just don’t.
I have white cabinets too, yes lots of upkeep and its worse because we don't have handles or knobs because my hubby likes clean design, which leaves me to clean all the cabinets daily.
This is what I was told by a friend of mine… They look great but she said just don’t do it because they get trashed in about three months and they’re always dirty.
@@RoxanneJ Yes, I would NOT recommend especially if you have kids or teenagers. Anyway, I think it may be out of fashion soon, so you are probably better off with a wood that you like.
I have maple cabinets with a dark walnut stain… they show every fingerprint and I am constantly having to wipe them off… I wipe around the cabinet handles almost daily- and I don’t have kids at home anymore! The truth is that things get dirty and need to be wiped off! And btw, I’m getting rid of my dark cabinets because although I picked them out 12 years ago, I’m sick of the brown depressing color and want light and brightness in my life. I don’t care what anyone thinks!
@@RoxanneJ I've had white cabinets for years, and I have no trouble at all. Of course they get dirty. A kitchen always gets dirty. I'd rather know the dirt is there and see it so I can clean it rather than have it accumulate on there. The problem with white, or any light painted cabinet, is chipping. I keep a touch up paint pen handy for touch ups
I have white cabinets with a very colorful spotted granite with various colors including maroon spots and black … not my choice on granite, chosen by a designer who needs retraining .. and gray backsplash SUCH A DULL DULL KITCHEN! .. but since I’m transitional by nature I already have my cabinet color which will pop the granite and I will replace the backsplash with something artsy.
About to have my new (used) cabinets painted and installed after Christmas. I'm going with a blueish green. I'm really struggling with whether to just paint the lowers that color and paint the uppers off-white (my trim color) or whether to paint them all the same. My kitchen is galley style and pretty small. You can see the uppers from the adjoining room, so the uppers being a neutral color might give more decorating options in that room. Any thoughts?
@@Quintessence2045 You know, it's so hard to commit when it's your home, but other people can see immediately what needs to be done. I appreciate your input!
I did mine in the light gray/off white just like at 3:45. I had white in our last house, but we had cleaning people. In this house, it is us doing the cleaning, so I wanted to avoid the stark white this time. Hope it works out in the long run.
If my cabinets/doors are all white and I'd like to paint them a non white colour, does this mean I'd have to also paint the inside of the cabinets and drawers?
I have a tiny kitchen with no window I went with white cabinets and white Subway tiles however my floor is checkboard with some Browns and creams I think it looks good and I had to go wipe because of the window factor
Video just started and we’re already breaking rule #1. We’re in a different state and our kitchen is being made and painted in another state. 🙈 we’re not picky as this is our first house and also, we can paint it in the future if we don’t love it.
So interesting to hear IKEA referenced so often as I have never stepped foot in any of their stores. The closest one is 4-5 hours away. I've seen it from the freeway in passing.
I feel that even if one is not planning on moving, one has to consider the prospective, not to get milk toast about the color, but no purple cabinets for example.
I’d like to add another thought, observation or consideration. Let the house speak -give some thought to what the rest of the house says (architecture etc). And -a little quirky feature here or there or an element of surprise will make you smile. A trick from becoming another ‘magazine modern’ kitchen is asking, where’s the fun?
I had glossy white kitchen cabinets for years and zero issues. Super easy to clean, why is everyone talking like they have to scrub for hours daily. Maybe the non glossy cabinets get dirtier and show a mess more?
@1:49, I actually like that. It's perfect for a retro kitchen design. @2:16, don't default to white fake Shaker with boring pulls and knobs. You can do white with high gloss cabinetry as mucky paw prints clean off really easily. @6:06, that is HIDEOUS and everything I hate in a kitchen.
I tried getting non white cabinet paint and was resisted by every friend i asked for opinion, it's unsane how everybody will look down at other cabinet colors. I even used computer paint simulation of the kitchen to show the result of different non white everybody i asked invariably picked the white over all the others.. It's so strong consensus that i could not oppose since i will sell this condo anyway.
Farrow and Ball testers are all only matt finish. The tester paint I bought was great but I bought (expensive) wine dark, estate eggshell 20% shine and it's MUCH darker even in full sun. Do I feel like buying white to try and lighten the paint for the final coat.... NO.
I think I’m stuck getting white, ugh! I wanted light blue, but they said it was like 8k to order a custom color. That way it would be softer with the light coming in the windows, and contrast with a white countertop. DOING WHITE ON White, with more WHITE…JUST SEEMS A little excessive. 🥺
Very nice video! I'm trying to decide my kitchen cabinet colors and also the floors. I know I need to consider the floor color. If money isn't an issue what type of floor that will stay trendy for awhile. I won't go with real wood but maybe something similare or maybe tile. I've looked at so many I'm getting tile brain block. Help!
“It’ll only go out of style when you get sick of it.” I love that quote.
I love white cabinets and also off white cabinets. I like color on the wall and pops of color in the kitchen.
I don’t care what the trend is….I know what I like & what I don’t. Do your own thing.
Exactly ❤❤
@ Heather Interesting. Thanks for posting that. I’m about to do my cabinets.
1.Sand like crazy everything with a sponge sanding block
2.Apply an alkyd oil based primer like Zinsser, yes it stinks like crazy, keep windows open and fans running and apply with a 5 mm roller and brush it out gently not leving straks and globs...and finally...
3.TEST,TEST,TEST BEFORE STARTING ANY PAINTING!!!... PRACTISE,ORSCTISE PRACTISE...GOOD LUCK
3.
Used that primer and it's soo much muc better than water based. But there is a mosquito outbreak here and they have no mercy.
Agree!!!
I prefer white appliances too
@@shadrach6299 They make the kitchen so much brighter and are much easier to keep clean.
Warm pine (NOT cypress or anything knotty .. yikes!) like Kauri is gorgeous in a kitchen. And white appliances are very in fashion!
My feelings on the Griege epidemic! Ugh!
@@bosvigos9165 I’m going to agree with you there. It’s like, pick a side already! Lol
I like white - because I’m boring and just want light and easy.
@@criticRN I'm sorry :-(
Great video, I especially like that you tell people that if they love a trend then they should do it,.
However… in a white kitchen you see EVERY tiny spot and it’s never ending.
@@tinam761 yep!
@@tinam761 Yes
I believe white cabinets are classic. Wiping them down periodically is not the issue. Doing it regularly keeps them from becoming sticky and/or dull. White is also a unifier between rooms of other colors.
I have dark wood cabinets and was thinking about going light a couple of years ago. Now I’m happy with my wood cabinets as it seems like colors and earth tones are making a comeback.
Classics never really go out of style
Thank you for your thoughts, I get so tempted to have my cabinets painted but I do like the original wood color.
Why fix it IF it is not broken?
Golden oak here -- Solid wood,
and still nice despite being
installed in the 1970's
I've painted the walls different
colors, changed the curtains
and the canisters and the
fridge/dishwasher but the
sink and stove/oven are
still working fine.
Thank you thank you cuz I wipe while I’m cooking all the time
I'm currently going with Sherwin Williams Black Fox cabinet color. It is a beguiling black brown shade not for the faint of heart. I love going off the beaten path! I typically get very positive compliments on my home from contractors and first time visitors. So that's positive feedback; individuality and one of a kind
Is that easy to clean? I'm looking for a charcoal.
@lf9341 sorry, I can't really answer that. Haven't had long enough. Bet SW could say though. Congrats on going with non white
Just from personal experience with black...it's friggin awesome LOL except that dust shows up easily, but dusting is quick and easy.
Lol. Don’t tell your friend that, whatever you do! 😂
What does the fake distressing look like?
We all have different tastes… her white kitchen isn’t what you like, but she does! She probably won’t like your distressed cabinets and might think they look like they were picked from a garbage pile. To each their own! 🤷♀️😁
@@commonomicstalk about a trend.
Distressed looks like my grandchildren live there...😮
Thank you for your humble opinion. This is our first kitchen in the planning stage. The contractor suggested moving frige to the other wall to add move cabinnet space with center island. Our old refrigrator sticks out about 7" the rollout drawers are definatly a must!
Haha! Apparently, I am the only one who liked the peach cabinets. I think a kitchen space should be fun, not heavy and dark.
Thank you! My cabinets will be yellow! I'm so excited!
Dying to see them! Considering Farrow Ball Sudbury Yellow for mine.
Agree!
Sure .. but 'cherry'? Sounds like a 90's nightmare!
Everyone is different. Do what YOU love! ❤
White goes with everything, but so do gray and black. Even with accessories, white kitchens can be boring, bland and sterile.
I love the bright yellow in a kitchen. So cheerful.
I had a yellow & white kitchen as well and it was such a bright, happy room, I always wanted to be in it!
I Love my white cabinets!
They have been white for 25 years 😊 and I STILL love them.
I personally don't like white anywhere in my house. It's cold, even 'warm' shades.
That said, my kitchen is olive green two-toned and after 11 years still I still love it💁
That’s all that matters.
I have 2 dachshunds and all my cabinets are white. I wipe them once a week with soapy micro cloths they look brand new
That’s lovely! May I know what color are your counter tops?
Hey..I gotta say it. I LOVED the peach! Now only if my husband would go for it.
imho: The peach
would look nice
in a small kitchen
with good lighting.
A big kitchen ---
umm ... I don't
think so.
Not going to lie, my white lowers get pretty grungy before I find time to scrub them. Nice when I do though.
I gave a galley kitchen with 1 small north facing window. So after extreme study, I have decided to do the following. Remove upper cabinets on either side of the window. Remove the small window, replace with a
4' x 5.5' sliding window above the sink.
As a home owner of many properties this video help definitely help sales increase
I went with black traditional kitchen cabinets. I love them but everything else is a light color white, beige, and grey. I do have to dust all the time but that's the trade off for a color I love.
Thank you! I was planning on painting my cabinets black next week
In certain cases I get why you want a finish that wont show everything (like I hear really dark floors show every spec of dust) but in most cases I like it. I don't want messes to be hidden. I want to see them so I can clean them up faster.
Exactly 👏🏼 don’t hide the mess, clean it! 👌🏼
I agree. I don't want to hide the dirt. I want to get rid of it.
I don't have anything against light colors but only on the upper cabinets. I'm not gonna scrub lower cabinets every day so dark green it is.
I'm deciding on the dark green color for my new kitchen now! I'd love to see a pictures. Leaning towards Forest Hill green (BM) right now on lowers and Simply White uppers.
Nice!
The upper white cabinets with black bottom cabinets that he showed was gorgeous😂
Those homes really gave me a headache.
good thing you don’t live there then lisa. yeesh
Im a furniture refinisher and I can't wait to have my own house and repaint the cabinets every 5 years or so!
I started off with white doors on my small kitchen, then I hated them, they looked cheap and tacky. I changed the doors to a dark blue-grey for the bottom and stainless steel veneered doors for the top. The kitchen looks a hundred times better.
Jim- This sounds intriguing!
High Gloss White are the staple, but Quality Paint is required, so they don't yellow and dont stain easily.
JMHO
I love colors, neutrals are definitely not me. My kitchen cabinets are teal, love ‘em
Mine too! 👍
I mean contrasting colors or compliment colors works with counter tops and back splash to cabinets. You can also do a lot with curtains.
I appreciate your art. Great job👍🏽💯You have inspired me. Thanks for your time & efforts.
Such a GREAT video and got me thinking hard about the decisions I was about to make on my cabinets LOL, time to re-evaluate my decision!
White cabinets. I don't need to worry about matching up wall colors.
What about Van Deusen (BM) blue cabinets with a herringbone brick floor (w/German schmear)?
I am currently painting my cabinets
In the photos I see many kitchens with above-bench cupboards that go right to the ceiling. Do you use ladders? I don't understand. That cannot be called useful storage.
When I redid my house I did what I liked and didn't worry one else about resale value. I plan on dying in this house. In other words I'm not selling it anytime soon.
If you have a small kitchen with one window. Do not go dark wood or paint.
I totally agree. I have the same set up so went with the “off-whitish” color that is a softer look, and get color from accessories. I also agree with an earlier comment that all colors need to be cleaned anyway!
@@judycook4314 I used BM White Dove cabinets, BM Chantilly Lace trim & ceiling, BM Balboa Mist walls. My island is BM Iced Slate (Greyish Blue cast)
@@cosmos9000 so many great ideas here!
what do you think about doing the cabinets a shade or two darker than your trim? I'm doing white dove walls with edgecomb gray contrast trim, and wouldn't mind having my cabinets a bit darker though? maybe pashmina by benjamin moore? does that create a disjointed look or can it work?
What is it about the institutional / sterile / angelic theme to their kitchen or even the whole home. It takes some doing to pick colors (it took me 27 samples to get my color scheme right). Express yourself there is no fun in just being vanilla.
To me there are so many whites out there, that in its self is a nightmare! I got my 2 finalists White colors chosen though.
Sounds nice and classic to me. I'm trying to picture it and in my mind it looks nice.
@@JaneSmith0709 Thanks for the feedback!
@@UrbanGardeningWithD.A.Hanks14 How did it turn out?
@@JaneSmith0709 I haven't gotten to the kitchen yet. I'm also contemplating a tin ceiling in there as well; mixing old and new looks.
I'd go with the uppers neutral
I think your idea will look beautiful.

@@Quintessence2045 You know, it's so hard to commit when it's your home, but other people can see immediately what needs to be done. I appreciate your input!
Fun, witty infotainment. Now I know something about colour theory!
I love my white kitchen🥰
Love your sense of humor!!
Sounds nice!
I am one of those people who think white cabinets are timeless. So it so wonderful to me!
Very useful information. Thanks!😉👍❤
Yes! The architecture/era of the house is indeed an important consideration. 🙂
I had glossy white kitchen cabinets for years and zero issues. Super easy to clean, why is everyone talking like they have to scrub for hours daily. Maybe the non glossy cabinets get dirtier and show a mess more?
"Unless we're talking microscopic organisms, but... who cares about those?" LOL
I'm so into black cabinets❤.
My 1st choice was Glossy yellow, sadly it's unavailable in my City.
Argh. My 2 tone kitchen is fab, I love it
Make yourself happy!!
This is one of your best videos yet!
Help!
I did darker floors that blend with cabinets which resulted in a very grounded feel
