U blame only in that kind of money. U sound cheap. Yes u had a really bad luck with design and installation quality. Next time find a local custom cabinet shop

The installer should remove all the doors prior to installing the cabinets, that as a rule eliminates minor door damage caused by the installation. As for the Home Depot design service, they are trained in house, and as a rule have no actual experience beyond that training. They do not visit job sites to confirm measurements, and offer opinions based upon job site conditions as a custom cabinet builder would do. A custom builder would simply refinish the damaged doors. In this case the installer was probably one of Home Depots sub contract installers.

This is the kind of problem that you run into when putting box cabinets together to make one large cabinet. This cabinet should have been built in just two sections (front and back) then put together in the house I’m guessing that you have six small cabinets and trying to make one large island cabinet. KraftMaid makes quality wall cabinets but you simply can’t expect 6 cabinets being screwed together and making one perfect cabinet.

Thank you for uploading this. I could see the detail of how this is constructed. My initial suspicions are correct. These are really no better than the cheaper cabinets, with exception or the back and side rails for reinforcement of the sides and back. Now I can duplicate the way that yours are reinforced by simply adding furring strips. You have plywood box construction and mine is particle board, but I dare say my cabinet boxes are thicker. I paid a little over a grand for my mine and I'm installing them myself. Everything in the stores is all smoke and mirrors. Buyer beware. I think you got ripped off. For what you paid you could have gotten high end hardwood RTA cabinets with 3/4" solid 5 ply or 7 ply baltic birch plywood construction. I'm sorry you ended up with what you got, and yeah the cabinet sides are going to bow unless you add wood as stiffeners. I considered similar cabinets to yours but after seeing the quality in the store I thought I could replicate that for thousands less. And I have, by far. Then again I suspect I am much older than you, so I'm comparing what the poor quality is today vs the good quality that was so common in the 60s. I honestly think for what you paid you could have had a cabinet builder custom make your cabinets or go the RTA route with good hardwoods. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Just finished installing the cabinets we purchased from HD and this is very similar to my wife and my experience with Kraftmaid from HomeDepot. Three cabinets didn't even match what was ordered. One cabinet was so misaligned and badly constructed, that the rollout drawer, couldn't roll out. Took another six weeks to get replacements, which delayed install. My wife had to hound the designer to get the replacements reordered. The competence and the desire to follow-through for a complete job, at Home Depot, has really fallen off in the last decade.

This is a sad experience. I can offer a contrasting one. I just this week got my new Kraftmaid kitchen. I used a Lowe’s designer but then I downloaded the spec book and read nearly every word, learned a lot, made many changes and corrections. I had a very experienced contractor who went with me to the final consultation to be sure everything would work. Cabinets arrived on time and perfect. Small kitchen, tight budget, I bought painted MDF cabinets for $6,000 plus install. I love them!

I installed Kraftmaid from HD some 15 years ago. They're not terrible but not great. Everything is MDF. They are NOT made to last forever - they started falling apart after about 12 years.I still believe something that expensive should last forever as long as you still like the look of it, so if you have the opportunity to buy custom from a local true craftsman who'll use cabinet-grade ply and hardwood, definitely go with your local craftsman.

We are gong through this right now. We have had tile reinstalled once. Still not right. Contractor ignored us asking him to stop, and broke a shelf that had already been out of place because of another contractor. Part of tile was done with spacers. First round, 69 non matching tiles were installed. Grout is different. Cabinets arrived, but STILL missing pieces and one drawer was defective, one cabinet door is not finished properly. There are many more issues. I contacted corporate today, but oh if only we could have our money back, I would gladly let them tear out the mess that is my kitchen. It takes all the joy out of a remodel, to have this happen. There is no accountability. Private companies will send out a supervisor to check on things. Home Depot can't be bothered until the problem is so bad that it is unavoidable. I'm really so upset that I let myself trust the Home Depot. Wish we could just rip it out, get our money back, and start again. We bought American Woodmark.

I had the same problems! If not worse! Longgg story short..spent 6 months waiting for cabinets only for them to arrive damaged, so they ordered replacements while my entire living room was stacked with the other boxes, I waited another 3 months, installer refused to start on my kitchen at all until all cabinets arrived which in my opinion they could have at least gotten things going because I needed electric and massive demo etc. anyway, new cabinets came and 2 more months passed and I don’t even have a start date! And this is after I was the one communicating and contacting HD and installers every time! I became frustrated and at this point had a demo’d kitchen AND my entire living room unusable because of all the boxes…I called corporate and made it through several rounds of managers and their “solution” was for me to be patient..I waited some more weeks (can’t remember) and I was asking for AT LEAST a start date on the books…I got ignored from the installer at this point and so I lost it! We started to ask for a refund (because HD requires 50 percent of the installer price down) and also a discount on the cabinets for all of this inconvenience…we ended up getting the refund on the installation but HD refused to do anything else. Literally as soon as we got the refund the regional manager stopped replying, even the escalation dept. stopped replying. I took it to the attorney general to make a claim and HD wrote them a letter saying they refunded our installation as if that was a “solution” I still was sitting there in that mess that I mentioned…they had zero compassion and throughout was never communicating at ALL! Blamed me at every turn for why this or that didn’t take place…in the end I found a new installer and that is when I found out all of their measurements were wrong (sink not aligned like this video) areas where cabinets had to be cut etc etc. and because I did the refund they now reeeally were really not wanting to reply to offer solution because “they were out of it” and “no longer responsible” at this point since I was the one that cancelled 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ they basically tied my hands to cancel..all in all I wasted an entire YEAR and nothing was done and probably had to pay more because new installer had to do all of this rearranging. Oh, and they also oversold me on tonsss of the miscellaneous small materials..I have an entire shed full of boards and kick plates..it is clearly way too much, not just a little bit I’m talking about here! RUN as fast as you can from Home Depot! Honestly, I don’t even want to shop here at all! They are crooks and don’t care about customers at all!! Someone even started a website homedepotsucks.org with pages of issues…so it is hilarious that corporate literally treated me like I was overreacting and not patient enough, and how “they’ve never had this kind of problem before” -you know that kind of bs rhetoric to make you feel like you’re the problem 🙄

I really wish that perhaps in the near future, people will stop buying chinese manufactured or standardized products then complain on how bad it was, when a local family owned cabinetry shop could produce a much better quality product albiet more expensive, but much less headaches & stress. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR PEOPLE. That construction is absolutely lousy to say the least, 1/2" Plywood sides dado'd into the face frame like that?? the nailer dado'd into the side?? the side panel is 1/4" MDF glued onto a 3/4" side??? Cabinets not square at all? Just wait till you put on an expensive counter top and have it crack on you down the line.... Your cabinets cost you 25K on paper, but how much did it REALLY cost you? You haven't even seen all the consequences of cheap cabinetry... You will eat the costs as time goes on. People.... how do we educate others on going local instead of this Chinese stuff sold off as "american" made? As a local family owned cabinetry shop, yes our quote for something like this would range 5-10k more. But you would actually get quality!! Lets not even begin talking about the VOCs that this junk produces. The cancers that formaldehyde can produce with the quality you bought is never worth the money. EVER.

Typicall kitchen problems. Some fall on Quality. Some fall on the designer not being clear on details. As the oven cab drawer. An some fault on the installers. There are ways to make the island straight which in return would make the island sides straight. Actually the recess needs to be a minimum of 48 finished.Even at 48 the pantry doors will pinch when opening. The recess is to deep if you have roll outs .Reason is restrictor clips do not allow enough door Swing for rollouts. My opinion coming from a guy that has been installing cabs for the last 32 years.....

Being that you are a "GC", I am surprised that, A - you bought from The Home Depot, B - worse yet, allowed them to perform the install, and C - were not present to preside over the install. You have full overlay cabinets with square outside edges - of course you need fillers for clearance and operation of the "tall pantry area" - Should have been 50" - 54" wide drywall to drywall to make this happen. KraftMaid, as always, does a fine job in producing the product. The damage on the one cabinet - likely in shipping or install. The oven cabinet selection could have been better. Did THD not show you and include you in the layout process. Again, as a GC, you should have been more involved and known better. This was a tough video to watch.

Wow , we were very close to going with HD Kraftmaid also. We decided not to due to the price. Just cabinets and a small island without any spacers , crown molding and a 3" filler at the top for the crown was north of 25K. We ended up going to a local place and we could not be happier. We actually upgraded in the quality of the cabinets. 3/4" plywood sides and birch doors with all the things I mentioned and it was 15K on the dot. Three weeks later they were delivered. I sure hope everything works out for you and Home Depot does the right thing. These prices were without install. I installed myself with a buddy of mine.

You should look at their Heritage cabinets. These are the cheapest most awful things to install. You can't inspect them before buying and many of them have busted out corners. I installed 5 uppers in 20 minutes, I hit every stud and there no "extra" holes in the backs of my cabinets. The base cabinets were a much different story but I should ad that there is no glue to join the face frames, only a ga-zillion 3/16th in staples. The base cabinets have no 45 degree corner pieces to screw down the counter tops so you have to buy appropriate brackets and make a jig so you install them all the same height, then you need to install a 3/4 in thick spacer block to the counter top and you know why? If you put your counter top onto the cabinet the damn drawers won't open which leads me to another dilemma. When you add your 3/4 in block and put the counter top on the cabinets you can see so much day light over your dish washer you want to rip out the works and drag the whole kit and caboodle to the managers office and tell him to shove it. In addition to that great flaw, the painted cabinet screws they sell you are of such soft metal the heads strip out and if you can get one to bite the head snaps off. Plus they don't self tap worth a shit but they drift off in another direction missing the second piece...so frustrating...what's happened to American quality? Why do I pay premium prices for crapola?

We purchased Kraftmaid cabinets from Home Depot. They were not inexpensive, almost $20,000. plus another almost $6,000. for installation and we don't have a large kitchen. We are extremely disappointed with the quality. Side panels and accessories do not match the cabinet front and appear to be made from a different material. Both Home Depot and Kraftmaid are offering no solutions. We are being forced to hire a custom cabinet shop to fix the problems, without knowing if we will be adequately compensated for the cost, not to mention our time and inconvenience while our kitchen is demolished. Very sad to see both these companies failure to take responsibility for their product. My recommendation is not to buy cabinets from Home Depot or Kraftmaid. They will rip you off by selling you one thing and delivering another.

Thank you for posting it. I am in the process of designing my kitchen with Both Lowe’s and Home Depot design centers; both designed my kitchen, one put a lot of different small cabinets in my kitchen to fill up the spaces . I have a small kitchen!! She replacing my 24in wide bottom cabinet with 2 small. Her goal in my opinion was to put as many cabinets she can. The sketch of my kitchen was looking like appliances and “fence planks “ in between. $31,000 minus 30% special. The other designer design it in minimum around 12,000. Not asking if I would like the drawers to close softly, do I need baking sheet cabinet. Her goal in my opinion was sell for less but quantity. In both cases I didn’t feel involved in my kitchen design. Keep in mind people they don’t do custom cabinets they work with sizes they have that deferred in 3” between them. I was wondering about my choice. Thank you for confirming my decision to go with a local cabinets maker. We are not that rich to spend our money to be disappointed. It would be a big issue to me if my white cabinets would have scratches and not lined up.

Couple of issues here. First, the pantry issue should've been solved prior to cabinets being ordered. Since you're a GC, you clearly should've known the corner bead issue and mud buildup could cause this problem. I'm curious to see how it was trimmed out with no room for a "return" or jamb extension. Much of the other concerns are problems Home Depot or Lowes ( I know Home Depot for certain) would have solved either in the form of reimbursement or replacement or possibly both. The waviness of the island would be almost unrecognizable if not completely unrecognizable with the countertops installed. 21k on kitchen cabinets is NOT a large amount of money. Custom kitchens are easily in the 50-150k range. I think you're absolutely nitpicking and looking for problems. Call HD or Lowes and demand 10 percent refund. Otherwise, be happy with the kitchen and I'm sure it came out terrific once it was completed.

All the exact same issues here with Kraftsmaid cabinets. We just sent them ALL back. The craftsmanship was awful. Cracked frames. The reveals and styles were all wrong. The very top uppers overhung the other cabinets by at least 1/4" and couldn't be covered up with the skins so, there would have been a huge gap. One base shipped without two of the door fronts on the cabinet. As The Common Carpenter mentioned below, "The plywood vertical sides will be at different heights while rails are aligned at the top of cabinet face, while the styles right next to one another are even top and the bottoms don't line up." SAME.EXACT.PROBLEMS on mine. Thankfully, we ordered through a local building supply company and they took them back. But, now, we're faced with both cost overruns and having to start the process of ordering all over again with a different manufacturer. So, here's another 6-8 weeks or more.

@@bryanscott293We have installed cabinets in various contexts across many projects. IKEA, for example, makes a product that can realistically be installed by anyone with low consequence in the event that something goes wrong. In the case of semi-custom, full wood/ply, super expensive Blum hardware, full paint finish cabinets like these, handing over the liability of a botched product or installation to a subcontractor or vendor is a very wise move on many levels. It certainly worked out for me. Had I opted to install myself, could you imagine The Home Depot taking me seriously when I go to them outlining all of the problems and defects? Not a chance - I'd have been stuck with these products with virtually no recourse. One of these days I'll upload Part 2 to address the many misconceptions about the role of GCs, among the other shortsighted interpretations of my personal experience.

I would have put the fridge in that closet instead of the pantries. It's not that much more of a walk from the other appliance, and it would have given more wiggle room to fit in a thin tall cabinet, or one of those spice racks that you pull out. Or I would have put the oven stack in that closet with a small base cabinet and counter top. I would then put the tall cabinet where the fridge is flush against the wall. That little cabinet right of the fridge looks clunky. Especially with these open-stlye rooms that refuse to go away, I suggest to most of my clients, to not make the most prominent wall a sea of stainless steel appliance that you're always looking at, unless they are covered with a door front. I'd rather get that focal wall as much “furniture” as possible when there's a living space involved. Most of the Home Depot kitchen designers seem to be winging it, in my opinion. They're not hyper focussed like good designers are who practically feel like they're designing it for themselves when doing it. I designed a kitchen for a friend on one of their brand's website. Gave him an itemized list of all the cabinets and where they go and the HD associate just took what I measured out and decided to changes base cabinets for the hell of it leaving my friend with ZERO base cabinets and instead, all drawer units. Never again.
