@@andrewn6271 North Texas. Water temp has been creeping up, just starting to have the big pre-spawn fish move up towards the shallows. Tight lines, my friend!
Thats one of the main things I admire about you and Tim, in addition to the MANY MANY other great things you guys teach, you also teach RESPNOSIBLE fishing. I HATE seeing a fish killed whether by accident or intentional. Im not some PETA nut or anything like that but I LOVE fishing and if we dont take care of these fish NOW, then our kids and grandkids wont get to experience the joy of catching a fish of a lifetime like our generation has. Obviously, its going to happen. Sometimes your going to gut hook a fish or hook their gills and when that happens we do the best we can to help that fish and what will be, will be. But at the same time if we all do our part to fish responsibly and pass those habits down to our kids and grandkids then hopefully those big ones and their genetics will continue to thrive in the future. Thanks for all you guys do for this sport. If only there were more like you.
I wish you would do a vid to show anglers how to properly hold a big bass by supporting it with 2 hands instead of vertically with one hand where it tears their jaw ligaments and they can’t eat. The Texas Share a Lunker program has lost a lot of 13 plus pounders for this exact reason. I even see pros cranking their jaws holding them horizontally with one hand instead of two. Also letting them flop around on boat carpet or on the bank removes their protective slime and they get a infection. A lot of newbies don’t know better and you guys have a lot of viewers.
Can’t believe I missed this video when you first put it out. I just got a Storm Arashi glide bait as a gift. I put new rings and hooks on it. I had no idea how to fish a glide bait, and still caught a nice 4 pounder. I now have 4 more glide baits. It’s so addictive!! Great info in this video.
Man, what a great video! I love the swimbait ones. I don’t throw surface anymore after an incident with an Osprey(the raptor, not the lure) flying away with a Huddleston! I played him like a kite for about 30 seconds before he hit the water, with the line tangled around his feet/legs, then it took another 5 mins to get him to the boat and it got REAL interesting. I was finally able to get him free of my line avoiding those talons and beak and he flew away with a huge applause from the boats that had gathered for the show. 🤣. So the baits obviously look real but I fish where Eagles and Osprey are common so I don’t mess with surface now. Thanks again Matt. Great stuff
More people in the world today need to be as compassionate as you my friend. I commend you for sacrificing your chance to have a good time fishing topwater for the sake of the predatory birds. I had a goose once swim over and eat my spook off the surface in a pond once and I tried reeling it in really fast to get it away from the goose but that thing was crazy fast and just ran it down more and seconds later I was fighting a flying goose on my medium action topwater rod. I felt terrible and was able to get the goose subdued and get the hook out of it but I still throw topwater I’m just a little more careful now but thank you for being a compassionate human being. If we all just had this amount of compassion.🤔
@@shawndulany4287 - Thank you Shawn. A goose on top water?! That’s not something you hear of every day. With the Osprey, It was dicey by the boat with an angry/scared Osprey but I was very glad he flew away unscathed. Not to mention the big bonus of getting my $30 lure back. 🤣. Have an amazing day
I can't believe I watched a 52 minute fishing lures video. :-) You are the best fisherman coach/teacher! I've desperately needed this channel for years, I never knew how to fish with swimbaits. I am hopeful now! :-)
The swimbait videos are my favorite, look foward to them every year! Just started getting into smaller swimbaits ( 6 - 8 inches). I have had a lot of luck on bluegill profile swibaits compared to shad profile. Keep up the great work!!!
I look forward to this video every single year. Unparalleled information for the new guys and a good refresher for the veterans. Thank you again as always!
Texas is a weird state. Up north and west the bass eat a lot of trout and yellow perch. In the south they eat a lot of tilapia and in most of the state they eat bluegill and shad.
Great stuff as always, you guys got me into the big glide/swimbaits. Caught my first glidebait fish last fall on the 160 r2s s-waver it was a 4lb largie. Since then I've gotten quite a few more, I'd probably put it in my confidence category. Anyway hope to see you guys out in the inland northwest one of these days. Anyway thanks Matt and Tim Godbless
Thanks for adding the fish care part of the video because now with all the people fishing and enjoying time on the water and the new advances in sonar technology there are a lot more encounters with these giant fish and it’s never been more important than now to get those fish back healthy. Before panoptics those fish weren’t getting bothered that much but people are starting to tap into those big fish environments whereas before it was way harder to find and target those fish. I have panoptics and use it a lot so not against that just think like you and want those fish to be here for years to come and produce more like them.👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥Been a huge fan of the channel for years and love the content you guys produce. I have learned so much from you and Tim over the years and it’s so much appreciated. Keep it up guys!!!
Thanks for the video Matt. Appreciate you talkin about fish handling. In general people keep fish out of the water way too long, swing them in the boat and beat em up. We gotta respect them, they arent just photo props.

can you guys do a video where you actually DO talk about the swimbaits that are hard to get your hands on? the klash's, deps 250, working class zero, pizz, toxic, UFO, and so on and so forth? please talk about how to fish those baits. I love you guys, big fan here in Virginia. been throwing swimbaits/glides for almost a year now.
🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣 Thanks for the great tips!! Two unrelated questions and one related question.. 1 - Can you describe what type of rod length and power you use for these swim baits? 2 - I’m looking to upgrade the graphs on my boat. Narrowed it down to 3, Hummingbird SI+, Lowrance HDS live, and Lowrance elite fs9, which is best in your opinion and why? Not looking to go all in with live imaging yet but maybe later on. But also really liking the 360 that Hummingbird offers.. 3 - What will it take for you to take me fishing?? Santee Cooper Lakes are my home lakes but for a chance to fish with you guys I’m willing to travel!!!!!
Matt, couple of questions: 1. shallow water: what depths are you talking about? can you give ranges? 2. swimbaits in highland lakes (for big spots): any 'adjustments' that you would recommend? some real monsters here for sure (florida genetics), but it's not all about just the largemouth. some other bass species about that when a guy gets tired of rubbing elbows and wants some 'alone' time... can be found.
Great suggestions Matt, the best part is the end, hope you can influence all the guys out there that do not care about bass health and treat them as a thing without life.
You guys have help me so much on my boy an my self including Thank you guys some of best info I've seen . They fish the high school bass tournaments . The first one 3 fish no keeper's. The 2nd tournament out of 263 boats they placed 7th!!! Thank you guys !!!
Great information….I’m from Wisconsin and always find it funny when people are cold when to me it’s not cold. To me cold is -15 with wind. Cheers and again great video.
Thank you for this information. I'm trying to fish to feed my family, I respect the fish I catch and the ones I don't, if it's a small bass it's released immediately, big bass will help my husband with his healthier diet full of fresh fish, same with catfish, trout, crappie, and even bluegill. Thank you again for your help in education of the general public
i always watch your yearly swimbait guide videos. they generally are the same with updated stuff but its always a nice watch. the only thing youve never talked about tho are Carp eaters. alot of lakes in the country that dont have trout like fish will have common carp, grass carp and buffalo. all 3 when they are babies are around the same size as the trout and bass will gobble them up all the same. in my local ponds they are full of grass and common carp. i fish my jig hooked baits on bottom year round to imitate the feeding carp and boy does it work
Matt, you said nobody wants to kill a giant bass... trust me, there are some terrible and sorry people out there who would without giving it a second thought. I'm glad you do the right thing.
This is the best balanced video I think you've done. You covered each aspect of it very well including the lures in illogical categories, the different techniques and the equipment. Excellent job. You even played on my sympathies as I watched you get colder and colder earlier in the day. .. As an idea for Northern fishermen, we have lite musky gear and lures that I think would fit the situation. It's true we fishing mainly for Smallmouths so this may not be appropriate but the rods, lines and reels may apply in more Southern climates without having to buy another specialized outfit.
I can report that the big Victory swimbait rod feels great for throwing the Savage Gear 8 inch fast sink RTF trout. Only had it out once and haven't caught a fish on that rod yet, but it throws baits in its weight range very well.
Oh my!!! Just the Video I've been waiting for!!! These ones are some of my favorite as we get you for a whole hour just dropping mad info on one of my favorite subject!! What an in-depth video. Thanks Matt for all of the advice about each bait and where to fish it. I will find out if I catch my PB this Spring but I always catch and release. Thands again for the video.

Matt you didn't talk enough about the gear for some gear junky like me :), Thanks a lot for great and informative video and great timing for uploading it. send regards to Tim
The savage gear products are highly underrated. I got 4 6lbers in Oregon in on the 8" pulse tail trout in the carp pattern. And countless 5+ lb bass on the pulse tail bluegill. Great video Matt!
Great video! I watch every one of your videos and would be clueless about fishing without this channel. I would love to see more kayak river fishing! I am always confused on which direction to fish my swimbait, with current or against. I fish all conditions but almost always rivers. Maybe it’s based on what fish I’m imitating…
Great content thank you Matt these set ups also are good for muskies ad I like to split my time hunting both species. Congrats on the new baby hope all is well.God Bless
Great stuff, Matt. I'm looking to head back to your old stomping grounds: Clear Lake. I don't think there are any sort of trout there. Bluegill, yes. Shad? I think they eat hitch. Which swimbaits do you prefer there? I seem to recall you throwing a lot of wedge tail baits, right? what colors?
i just picked up my first big swimbaits. Getting ready for spring up here in nothern indiana. picked up 2 gantarel jrs and one regular size and 4 S waver 168s. spring can't come soon enough!!!!
I'm so ready also Mrwhiteboy! As we get warm days I'm going be looking for the melt to happen on long lake just north of Elkhart. I fish everyday even in the rain! 💯FISH ON!
I like to tie the Gantarel on the bottom eye that is for adding a weight. It will wake so pretty. My first ever Gantarel fish was 8 that came straight up out of the water on the hit.
Finally broke down and ordered a heavy savage gear squad!! Been forcing small glides on a rod that’s just not quite enough, can’t wait to have a combo dedicated to it! Plus this means I can finally try out the g ratt and bassanity baits 👊🏼
I know you said years ago that there were no trout in clear lake yet you usually fished the trout style baits, is there a reason for that and if I do the same rather than fishing a bluegill style am I costing myself bites? I know they eat gills on my home water but we also have carp, suckers and catfish which I assume big bass can also eat.
First off, Thank you as always for providing a wealth of information for all of us, much appreciated! For the Tranx do you spool with a backing, and if so mono or different backing, and how much? Also, how much braid do you use when spooling? Can I spool with no backing and a 150 yd. spool, or is that not enough line? I usually do not add backing. Thanks!
How long of a leader do you recommend ? I was thinking 4-5 feet. Be my first year throwing swim baits. I use an Alberto when I do drop shots braid to flouro. But I don’t think I’d trust it with a 30-100$ bait tied on lol. So I was thinking uni-uni 4-5ft keep it out of the guises for more peace of mind. Was also considering throwing straight 15 or 20 pound flouro? Thank you
Do yall have any opinion on Shimano's crucial rods? I've got the heavy and medium-heavy models... I love them... just curious about your thoughts on the rods.
Low profile is the way to go, but I like to keep a few round reels on the side, such as the Calcutta D, and Conquest for 30 degrees or below air temperature fishing. The clutch stops engaging for low profile baitcaster in 30 below air temperatures.
I was wondering if you consider the St. Croix a jig or treble hook rod? I've watched all the swimbait breakdowns but it wasn't mentioned previously. Thank you Matt!
Great as always , I got my bull shad rod in and I’ve found it’s place but I’m looking at jig hook rods and been thinking the Imx , or a 807 dob or the hub rod . Haven’t seen much on the hud and idk if the 807 is to much rod for Fl
Hey I have a serious question, my pond the guy has bluegill but hasn’t stocked them in a few since he switched to stocking tilapia for them to eat, they get big but I feel like just applying bluegill strategies isn’t enough. Any tips for that or am I over thinking it?
I’m curious what you would settle on if you were fishing the California Delta I know you used to be in California because there is trout bluegill shad literally everything in the river baby striper so what would you sell on throwing for a swimbait and color in the Delta for spring
Thank you for all videos you do, It's much appreciated. When you speak of going from braid to leader, how much leader are you talking about? 3-4', 30-40' or somewhere in between?
What is your thoughts on the BASS Pro shops glide baits? They are pretty reasonably priced. I am brand new to swim baits so didn't want to drop a pile of money.
The frogs were fricking in northeast tn 2 days ago. Its a coming. And I've blistered them on the ima glide fluke 7 inch. Wicked action. Cheap price. Good quality.
I love these long swimbait videos unfortunately I’m in New York and we are still ice fishing lake trout but soon enuff we’ll be out there chucking big baits
Your definitely on to something with that top water here in pa in April is trout season and usually just after ice out water is kinda still cold so I'll trout fish for a bit and you'll see those trout on top kinda just waking moving super slow I never thought about it before till you just said it
Just a question out from left field. Is there a reason why You or Tim have never mentioned a Depps 250 or any Depps swimbaits? Cuz they work! I've started to use them & that thumpertail. Is it because of a North vs south thing? Well not now that both of you have moved to Tennessee. I haven't mentioned his name but I know that you know who im taking about. 😆 😆 I'm just curious?
This is something I'm just now trying to get into. I just bought my first dedicated rod and reel. A savage squad rod and a kastking kapstan 300 reel. Have y'all tried that reel by chance? All the reviews are great and it was only $129.
Matt- "Keep it simple" (as there's 50 different swimbaits sitting on the deck) 😄 Great stuff as usual. I got the burrito this winter. Can wait for the ice to get off these lakes so I can give it a whirl.

Thanks!
Matt,
Could you recommend a swimbait for ponds and fishing at night? Is color and size crucial?
How do you practice CPR on a bass? Catch. Picture. Release.
Thank you for the conservation message, Matt!
I love these swimbait videos, and appreciate the tips on keeping the fish safe at the end, thanks as always!
when you got amped up talking about getting blown up right by the boat it got me excited. still 10 inches of ice when i fished over the weekend.
Thank you
Thank you so much brother i have trout and kokanee salmon in my lake! I hope to catch my pb this year my biggest fish is a 7 pounder 😞
Do yall have any opinion on Shimano's crucial rods? I've got the heavy and medium-heavy models... I love them... just curious about your thoughts on the rods.
Love these videos. Planning a trip to the Chick mid-April after the pro tourny and going to toss big SB's! Can't wait to hopefully land a PB!
Excellent Matt! Thank you
Big question have you guys got your hands on any of Gail’s other baits like the nacho taquito gill ect??
Low profile is the way to go, but I like to keep a few round reels on the side, such as the Calcutta D, and Conquest for 30 degrees or below air temperature fishing. The clutch stops engaging for low profile baitcaster in 30 below air temperatures.
When, if any, is the time to put feathered trebles on a glide or boot tail swimbaits? I've seen them on a magdraft and on some gill glides.
Love the whole video! Great work and keep up the awesome work
I was wondering if you consider the St.
Been waiting all winter for this bideo
Keep it real 💯 love it.Thanks for the knowledge 💯 👌
Hey I have a serious question, my pond the guy has bluegill but hasn’t stocked them in a few since he switched to stocking tilapia for them to eat, they get big but I feel like just applying bluegill strategies isn’t enough. Any tips for that or am I over thinking it?
I noticed you didn’t mention Perch and Crappie fisheries, would they fall more into the bait fish category or bluegill?
I’m curious what you would settle on if you were fishing the California Delta I know you used to be in California because there is trout bluegill shad literally everything in the river baby striper so what would you sell on throwing for a swimbait and color in the Delta for spring
Thank you for all videos you do, It's much appreciated. When you speak of going from braid to leader, how much leader are you talking about? 3-4', 30-40' or somewhere in between?
We typically run 8-12' of leader.
How do feel about the 8" Keitech Swing Impact and Easy Shiner offerings and the 8" Gambler really big GZ?
What is your thoughts on the BASS Pro shops glide baits? They are pretty reasonably priced. I am brand new to swim baits so didn't want to drop a pile of money.
The st croix rod does a good job with both jig and treble hooks
Matt in clear water 10+ feet visibility how many feet florocarbon leader are you putting on your braid? 3’ ?
I was surprised that you didn't mention the Little Creeper Swimbaits....? Love your Videos BTW!!!!
As always great information, thanks for all the content!
The frogs were fricking in northeast tn 2 days ago. Its a coming. And I've blistered them on the ima glide fluke 7 inch. Wicked action. Cheap price. Good quality.
Do you still use the Megabass Onager swimbait rod? Love these videos Matt, thank you sir!
What if your lake has bluegill and trout? Do the fish position the same still and which do they prefer?
Awesome video lots of great information
Matt- "Keep it simple" (as there's 50 different swimbaits sitting on the deck) 😄 Great stuff as usual. I got the burrito this winter. Can wait for the ice to get off these lakes so I can give it a whirl.
