Jig Fishing For Fall Bass - Everything You Need To Know!

  • If you're not comfortable fishing a jig, this video is for you! The jig bite can be amazing in the Fall! We rely on it to get BIG bites when other baits don't. The key is understanding where bass are positioning and which jig styles to throw. Today Tim is giving you the keys to Fall jig fishing whether you're fishing a clear finesse fishery, a shallow grassy lake, or anywhere in between.
    Understanding how fish are positioning in the Fall is half the battle. Pay attention to Tim's tips on WHERE he throws each style of jig as much as why he's throwing it. Getting bit on the jig is easy, once you're around the right fish. After that it's all about jig selection and color. The right jig for a highland reservoir is completely different than the right jig for a Southern fishery.
    Below you'll find links to the exact jigs, trailers and gear discussed in the video. We've included Tim's favorite sizes and colors as well. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

      I remember stopping at an eatery in Middletown with a wall dedicated to the Valley Fire, and a newspaper article about it on the wall. Having just come from fishing Clear Lake, that TB connection was all the more potent.

      Not quite as cool, but it's still a great show of character...
      I lived in Magalia when the Camp Fire came through in 2018. I wasn't at the specific event, but many of my neighbors were and met the guys from the channel with nothing but great things to say. They came out and donated their time and gear to the people who had lost theirs in the fire.

    Love the close up shots at 8:30. Much better than just holding a jig up close to the camera.

    Dude the timing of this video is nuts. Was out on the lake yesterday, tried all sorts of baitfish patterns and moving baits- nothing. After a few hours I switched to a small T-rig w/beaver style bait and flipped steep banks where the shallow dropped off to 50ft and started catching a lot of fish around 1-2bs. I then started throwing a football jig and immediately started catching bigger bites. Like a 5lber on the first cast. You guys always talk about this stuff but for the first time it actually worked for me and I was so thrilled to put a pattern together. I got back to the ramp and everyone talked about how slow the bite was but I was able to find the productive pattern of the day and have the best day of fall fishing I’ve ever had!

    I fish at night a lot since its still pretty hot here. Chatterbait and spinnerbait are my go to rigs, but after watching this I decided to throw a black and blue jig. After about 10 casts I finally get a THUMP! Reeled down and jacked a solid 3 pounder, which is good for my city pond. Thanks Tim!

    Very informative jig video. Jigs are a favorite of mine. I fish them all year. I believe a crawfish is a special treat for a bass. I have caught bass with shad in their mouth but couldn't resist the jig. Thanks for sharing the excellent coverage of Jigs.

      After 8 years of taking this hobby seriously, I fiiiiiiiiiiinally caught a couple on a jig this past summer. It was by stroking a jig, ironically via Matt’s latest jig video. It’s incredibly rewarding when you finally do catch your first jig fish. Keep at it! I had to literally only bring one or two rods rigged with a jig and leave all other lures at home, forcing myself to use a jig. Again, keep at it, you got this!

    • @tagg946
      @tagg946 10 місяців тому

      Just keep at it. Fish them with the confidence you’d have throwing a texas rig and it’ll eventually happen. Not every day I can get a jig bite going, and really, the biggest thing I’ve noticed is that fish in certain lakes and bodies of water love jigs, and others don’t. I have a few places I fish where I always have a jig tied on and it’s almost always the most productive bait. The other places, I don’t even consider tying one on. Same with cranks, too.

    Matt, Tim… what are your preferences as the water cools on retrieving. Do you drag, or small hops.. just as the water cools even more because the crawfish are slower moving and, also what are your thoughts on super chunks…

  • @stoneysdead689
    @stoneysdead689 10 місяців тому +1

    If you really want to change it up throwing a jig, try the Tightrope Fireworks jigs- they're tiny, but they have a heavier wire hook than most smaller jigs, and they use rubber skirts that are shorter and tied such that they really puff out- that's why they're called the firework jig. I use either a baby paca craw, a Roboworm TRD, or an Eerie Darter which are made by this smaller plastics company but- they really work well. But whatever your favorite jig trailer is, just get the smallest version and it will probably work fine. Smallies absolutely destroy them I hear but I use them for spotted bass- and they really work well. I get far more bites than I do throwing a standard jig or even a compact pitching jig. Especially right now- the bait fish are small- the jig is small- it works. I've even pitched into schooling bass- because I was in ap[inch and didn't have time to grab a topwater- but they hit it anyway. I just threw it out and retrieved it as high up in the column as I could, as fast as I could- and they nailed it. I think they would probably hit an empty hook if you could cast it far enough to get it in there when they're busting the surface like that. Not always- I've had days where they wouldn't touch anything I threw in there but- most of the time they hit anything that's shiny and moving. Ppl say if you'll throw like a big spoon the smaller ones can't eat that on the bottom the bigger bass are hanging out waiting for shad to fall down and they'll hit it- but I can't bring myself to pass up the easy target to try it. It's so much fun following them around and catching numbers, that I usually just do that. It's also unbelievably frustrating when they're doing that but won't hit your bait- but like I said, that's rare in my experience.

    This is the one category that I have no confidence with.
    Mind you when I do catch them on a jig, it’s such a thrill to jack them with that jig hook.
    Most times I reach for the Texas rig if I’m bottom fishing!
    Not sure how to build confidence when using jigs.

      throw it till your hands bleed. you'll catch one then get some clues what your fish want. also, treat jig fishing like turkey hunting: ie, you are going for one biggun.

      Don’t just drag the jig. Try moving it with small quick pops then reel up the slack. If you watch Tim’s rod I think he’s doing this a lot. If you feel a bite then do a slow drag like pull to check for a fish and if so, set the hook. Anyways this works for me. Good luck to you.

    What type of Jig would you suggest for those of us who don’t have a boat and can only fish from the bank? Seems to me that it would be harder to pitch/flip while standing on land next to brush or trees. We are better off trying to cast a Jig out further.

      I primarily fish from the bank n one of my most consistent/confidence baits is a quarter ounce finesse jig. Im up in MN so i primarily throw a bluegill imitation. Depending in the mood of the fish u can drag it on the bottom, slowly hop it along, or stroke it and get reaction strikes. One of the most rewarding bites but takes a while to get the hang of

      Appreciate your reply and info. I have quite a few of 1/4oz Finesse Jigs I can try. My 3/8oz and 1/2oz Jigs are football style and I cast them out and drag/hop them across the bottom. I agree with you that it is satisfying when you get that bite and set the hook. Fun times. I was just wondering if there was a better style Jig to use and your suggestion on using a Finesse Jig is what I will try.
