The best feature in FFXIV is that you can play all the jobs on one character so I'd suggest to at least try out a job in each role because you never know what may click with you.

@@georgieegames Another good reason to try different roles is that the daily roulette of duties has an “adventurer in need” bonus for a role that’s not currently queuing as much as others. So if fewer tanks are queuing, you can go in as one and get more money for that duty than other roles. Just an incentive to reduce wait times for queues. :)

@@georgieegamesIt is true that you can change jobs whenever you want but they are still to be leveled individually (apart from Scholar and Summoner who go on together).
So my advice is to choose a class that you like best to take to the end, and then dedicate yourself to trying all the others.
Otherwise you often find yourself stuck with the main quest.

@georgieegames it's good to note that some of your exploits are touched upon.
If you did the lancer/Dragoon quest line to 50, you will be introduced to a pivitol character fairly early. In heavensward he will remember you.
In the mon quest line you will have someone point out your exploits in stormblood.
The same with rogue/ninja will give you a lot of credentials with the pirate groups in Limsa and there's a bit of a acknowledging by a npc in stormblood as well.
If you enter as a healer in stormblood or in shadowbringers. There will be points that a NPC will ask you to help heal people.
In Shadowbringers you kind of want 4 level 80s. 1 in each role (tank, healer, caster, dps) as there are role quests that leads to an overarching story side quest that's actually gives you a fair bit of lore when completed.
In endwalker it's up to 5 level 90s (tank, healer, melee dps, phys range dps and caster). That also wraps up some loose ends and gives a bunch of ties to B plots you were involved in.
Also if you get all but the two newest jobs(you do not need reaper or sage to 80 to complete) to 80 you get a special mount for doing g so yea...all on one character including crafting and gathering is really really nice.

The starting classes and where they start are as such:
    > Gridania
-Lancer: Lancer becomes a dragoon(dps) at lvl 30 and it is a melee dps with low combo difficulty
-Archer: It becomes bard(dps) at 30, good ranged dps but you won't really experience the combo system of the game with this one
-Conjurer: becomes White Mage (healer) at lvl 30, A pure healer that does BIG heals. Reactive so you heal after people take damage.
    >Limsa
-Arcanist: It splits into two different jobs at lvl 30, but they share xp, Summoner(Dps) and Scholar(shield healer/proactive). The dps is a good gateway caster but the class doesn't quite make sense until lvl 30
-Marauder: Becomes Warrior(tank) at lvl 30, MASSIVE self healing, very dps-y, probably the better starter tank of the starter classes
    >Ul'dah
-Puglist: becomes Monk(dps) at 30, more combo difficulty than Lancer but still a decent choice
-Thaumaturge: Becomes blackmage at 30, THE SLOW CASTER do not recommend for a first class choice.
-Gladiator: Becomes paladin(tank) at 30, Good self healing, defensives, and dps it is an all rounder tank, it is considered a magical tank so it uses mp but not as much as Dark Knight(Dark knight is locked behind the first expansion)
At lvl 10 you can try out any other classes at your starting city(you do go to the other cities at lvl 20ish in the main story):
-Rogue which becomes Ninja at lvl 30 starts in Limsa, but you can't choose it as your starting class you have to pick it up from a quest. If you want to play as Rogue from the begining, you would have to choose Arcanist or Marauder in character creation and level it to lvl 10.
Ninja is a melee dps with a semi complicated combo but not much harder than the Lancer or the Puglist.

Just to add to this, more jobs are added at each expansion, and they always start at higher levels.
      Devided by expansion they are:
      Heavensward:
      - Dark Knight (tank)
      - Astrologian (Healer)
      - Machinist (Ranged DPS)
They all start at lvl 30 and, unlike every other expansion job, you HAVE to reach the expansion to unlock them, which means finishing the base Realm Reborn story (lvl 50) and the between expansions patch story (normaly called Post-[Name of last expansion] )
      Stormblood:
      - Samurai (Melee DPS)
      - Red Mage (Magic DPS)
They unlock, and start at, level 50 regardless of where you are in the story. As long as you have one combat job at level 50 AND own the Stormblood expansion, you can unlock them.
** Blue Mage (Magic DPS - LIMITED JOB)
Also unlock at 50, but starts at level 1, since Blue Mage is it's own, separate, different thing. You can NOT do the story as a Blue Mage, you get NO spells by leveling, you can NOT use the auto-matchmaking for dungeons, and the max level for it is lower than the rest. On the other hand, it has a MASSIVE list of spells you can learn from almost every kind of combat content AND it's own special mode / mini-game thing called the Masked Carnival.
      Shadowbringers:
      - Gunbreaker (Tank)
      - Dancer (Ranged DPS)
Unlock, and start at, level 60 as long as you own the Shadowbringers expansion.
      Endwalker:
      - Reaper (Melee DPS)
      - Sage (Healer - Shields)
Unlock, and start at, level 70 as longs as you own the Endwalker Expansion.

I think the main reason everyone reccomends Summoner starting off is that A: It's rotation is simple yet still has that growing potential and cool unlocks as you progress, and 2. You also *technically* level a healer job, Scholar, at the same time, because they both come from one job, arcanist.

Yeah, you can be Summoner whenever you wanna have fun, but if you don't want to spend 10-30+ minutes waiting in the duty finder you can go Scholar and pretend duty finder doesn't have a queue (except in Alliance Roulette)
The downside, and let's be honest, it's a serious downside, is that you fight with a BOOK! That's the real reason he switched jobs, Ameliance was trying to tell him that girls outside of Sharlayan don't find books to be sexy.

As a lifelong Bard main, starting as Archer is a pretty god option if you want a moderately chill experience. Since you're ranged you can easily dodge a LOT of attacks and you'd be surprised how often I was the last person standing in raids by just bouncing around the arena like a flea on a hot fry pan. Plus, other than when you get to Bard and get songs, the level of expectations from the party is fairly low, giving you more time to learn.

You should keep in mind that FFXIV is a job based MMO. You need to think more on FFV or X-2 terms rather than individual tittles. Meaning you play a character on A Job. And Remain on that Job for whatever content you're doing (you can change at any point outside of battle / dungeon / duty ). It's not about building, you are given spells and actions that you have by default. So a white mage in classic terms applies to FFXIV in the sense that they have healing spells (cure, cura, curaga,...) and then offensive ones so you can do your content without having to have an NPC or something behind doing the damage (stone and aero on basic levels). So think about FFX-2 as a white mage but add the ability to cast damage because the game understand you able to do content solo without depending on extra players.
The concept of healing, in particular, takes that approach of "keeping people alive while doing damage" rather than "just healing" (in FFX-2 white mage exclusively heals unless you use an accessory for casting black magic for instance). So White Mage, Astro, Scholar and Sage all deal damage AND heal. Regen allows WHM and Astro to DPS while healing (through regen buff), whereas Sage and Scholar have a fairy and a bound that heal for them only requiring proactive healing to mitigate damage. And blabalbla. In general, if you want to heal and do damage easily, White Mage, Astro if you want to buff the party, Scholar if you want to AFK and Sage if you wan to heal while doing damage.

    • @georgieegames
      @georgieegames  10 місяців тому +2

Ohh I didn't even THINK about it in the concept of FFX-2 but that's a great way to describe it. I also didn't know you could change your job at any point outside of a battle etc so that's good to know that I'm not like stuck if I don't get on with the class! Thanks for the info that's great! :D

@@georgieegames thats why you unlock new jobs at a higher level. You can train your way into tanking by being a warrior or a paladin up to level 50 where you can go dark knight and at 60 gunbreaker if you really want the gunblade. Or you can enjoy the life of a dps and try tanking at 60 and then reaper at 70. You can have all jobs unlocked in 1 character and play them as it suits your mood. You can play harder dps when you're in the mood for a challenge or, if you sleepy, go on an easier one that requieres little of you. Its a very free game. You are not expected to be great from the start. New people have a leaf mark on their heads and that serves as a sign of "must be helped if they ask for it" and the community does a great job at not judging. At least the European one.

  • @TheKarishi
    @TheKarishi 10 місяців тому +7

Blue Mage is available at level 50+ - Technically you get it when you finish the base story of A Realm Reborn, which has a 50 level requirement.
If you can find people to Blue Mage WITH you, then Blue Mage is great fun. The only problems with BLU are that 1) You have to put together parties yourself because Blue Mage can't enter queues and 2) You REALLY have to read the tooltips because where the other jobs have a series of skills that naturally form a useful rotation for good damage and utility a Blue Mage puts this whole cast bar together yourself which means there's no guarantee it can do Any Damage At All. Like, in theory you could forget to bring attacks into the dungeon.
On the other end you can come up with combos yourself, and that's really cool if you're into it. And a well-made Blue Mage combo can knock an epic boss flat on its back in a couple seconds. Some bosses aren't immune to instant death, and some Blue Mage skills inflict...let me check my notes, here, ah, here it is...INSTANT DEATH.

I saw someone comment on base game classes but to mention the levels for others
Astrologian, Dark Knight, and Machinist are available at level 30...but you need to get to the city area in the first expansion, so you'll already have a job at level 50+ by the time you get there
Samurai and Red Mage are both unlocked in Uldah at level 50
Gunbreaker is unlocked in Gridania and Dancer in Limsa Lominsa both at level 60
Reaper and Sage are unlocked in Uldah and Limsa Lominsa respectively at level 70
Personally I'd recommend starting as a Dragoon. It's what I started as and so long as you keep up on the job questline dialogue in main story quests will actually reference that, which no other jobs do. I'd also recommend trying out every job at some point, just to see what clicks but also to gain insight on how each role type plays. Knowing what each job type goes through really helps understand how to play better as a team.
I'd also like to summarize each job and some role divisions
Healers - there are two subdivisions, reaction healers and shield (preventive) healers
White Mage - reactionary with the best overall healing as that is its main focus
Astrologian - reactionary, with some prediction of big heals and also some small damage buffing to other allies
Scholar - shield, with a focus on having your fairy out to heal for you so you can focus on DPS, also has some other party utility which gives them a unique role in content
Sage - shield, with it's main thing being selecting a party member, and for every attack you do, they regain some HP
    Tanks
Paladin - The one with the most variety, has some spell casting but also is generally good at absorbing damage and covering other party members
Warrior - This one is the most self sustaining tank at higher levels, with the ability to solo content other jobs can't. Not everything is soloable for them though (yet)
Dark Knight - Overall fairly decent I'd say, but has the highest damage potential during burst windows
Gunbreaker - Overall throughout the fight they will do the most damage consistently and in ways are just a beefier DPS
    Melee DPS
Dragoons - I'd say the most average of the melee DPS, but with some good party utility with some buffs they can provide
Samurai - as said the most selfish DPS, can do some big damage with little regard to others. Is still one of the most solid jobs and not too hard to play well
Monk - similar comparisons to Samurai, but without range, better mobility, and faster skill cooldowns
Ninja - I feel this job is simpler than presented. It's still intense to try and play perfectly, but ninjutsu is only 3 fast button presses and not the 12+ presented in the video. I'd say it has the highest mastery level
Reaper - Overall a solid class that just deals damage, you attack, those attacks lead to bigger attacks, and those big attacks lead to even bigger attacks
    Ranged DPS
Bard - Has the most party utility with buffs and even some debuff cleanse, as well as its DoT management
Machinist - the Samurai of Ranged DPS, honestly the one job so far I don't vibe with
Dancer - widely considered the best Ranged DPS, it focuses on buffing one party members damage, with a small party heal, party wide shield, and party wide damage buff, as well as being the coinflip heavy job as shown, it also has the best mobility of Ranged DPS
    Magic DPS
Summoner - recommended since it's the easiest caster to learn, and even has a small heal and resurrection utility. Also has good damage so yeah also a good pick. Also probably part of why it has been recommended so much is it and Scholar share their base class, so leveling one also levels the other, effectively you'll be leveling a healer and magic DPS at the same time, to be able to jump between either later on.
Black Mage - lowest mobility of casters, but has highest DPS potential of casters. I'm playing it on an alt account right now and it is slow to play early on, even for me who knows what I'm doing.
Red Mage - My personal favorite caster, highest mobility of casters, and the jack of all trades class. Being able to fill in for periods of healing but still having good damage potential makes it very versatile, which for learning fights/content is useful.
Overall though, play what you want to play and think looks fun. I started to learn Astrologian purely because of the aesthetic and it has led me to not quite healer main but nearly a healer main. When our next expansion, Dawntrail, comes out next year, we'll have another Melee DPS and another Magic DPS to learn and see how they fit into current dynamics.

You can play all the jobs on one character, so don't feel too pressed by your first choice. Anyway, most of the jobs you are interested in come later in the leveling process, the only two you can play from the start are dragoon (starts as lancer turns to dragoon at level 30) and summoner (arcanist turns into summoner and/or scholar at lvl 30, - you can level those 2 classes at the same time, just need to unlock the both of them). For dark knight and astrologian even if they start at level 30, you need to be in the heavensward expansion, so at least lvl 50 with another job

A few tidbits about Jobs and game design you asked about:
Building a Job: Build diversity is almost nonexistent in ffxiv. if you play a job you have access to all of its skills and some role-based abilities shared within your role. You can no longer cross class abilities from other jobs to tailor the experience to your taste, but instead the job is designed to be complete at max level. Additionally gearing is very linear, your main stat increases healing and damage, and the rest are functionally useless. Most gearing is tailored around substats that increase damage either directly such as crit or direct hit, or tailor a job to comfort, such as speed, damage reduction, or mana regen. You usually select speed to whatever feels comfortable to you and then focus on damage stats. Some classes can have variety by having a max speed build as well as something like a crit build that are both 'viable'.
Reaper (RPR): class is unlocked at level 70 so you need to reach level 70 on a different job and own the Endwalker expansion to unlock it. It is a very straightforward job to learn but takes a little bit of effort to master. Jo calls it the spooky slice the the job identity is building a resource to let the voidsent (ffxiv demon) you made a pact with possess your body and go ham for a short period.
Gunbreaker (GNB): Plays like a dps meaning it has a lot more dps buttons to press than normal tanks making it feel more active sometimes. This can clash with the tanking aspect sometimes if you aren't comfortable with weaving oGCDS yet.
Summoner (SMN): plays a lot like a phys ranged but has some nice utility sprinkled in to help keep the party alive, has the unique design of sharing a level with Scholar. This means if you level up a SMN or SCH the other is leveled as well, meaning you get two jobs in one.
Black Mage *BLM): Jo refers to the class feeling slow since it has a lot of long cast times and does not have much change to its rotate for a very long time. This can make the class feel very slow to play versus other classes that get abilities that functionally change how it plays at a very early level. All jobs level at an equal speed though some get the advantage of getting into leveling content faster by virtue of being more in demand (tanks/healers).
Dancer (DNC): While playing the job does not play the song, it is featured in the job's questline!
Bard (BRD): The performance feature (playable instrument) is kind of crazy in how in depth it is. There are tons of different instruments in the game, and there are bands that go around and perform using the system depending on your server, you only need to reach level 15 on archer in order to unlock the entire performance feature.
Blue Mage (BLU): The job features a lot of old FF spells flavored to older FF games as well as some unique to FFXIV. It plays a bit like a pokemon game where you go around and collect all of the new spells (currently 124 total) whenever they increase the jobs level. You then select 24 spells from the list of learned spells as your active spells to use. IT is limited because the jobs spells are designed to be kind of broken such as level 5 death insta killing some enemies, or missile halving the health of enemies. it's fun side content but doesn't lead to endgame content so you can't rely on it as a main job if you are interested in current expansion activities.
Crafters/Gatherers: Not featured but crafters and gatherers also have a full leveling system with numerous catchup systems to help you get them up to level. They get their own gear and skills that can be used to make money, prepare for endgame raid, craft fashionable gear or dyes, or even craft furniture for your house. It is a game unto itself, and many become crafter/gatherer mains since XIV features lot of content outside of combat.

Classes not available at the start. When you reach the Heavensward expansion you get access to Astrologian healer, Dark Knight job, and Machinist job (all 3 start at level 30. When you reach level 50 no matter what expansion youre in, you get access to Samurai melee and Red Mage caster (both start at level 50. When you reach level 60 regardless of where you are you unlock Gunbreaker tank and Dancer ranged (both start at 60). and when you reach level 70 no matter where you are you unlock Reaper melee and Sage healer (both start at level 70).
I play summoner because of its heavy influence on the ff series, but Gunbreaker is filled to the brim with fun nods to FF8 and its origins so I love it.

I started as a lancer/dragoon and only played that job for a long time. It has a long rotation compared to other jobs and the queue times for duty roulette takes too long because is a dps job. Now I enjoy less complex jobs and can play one tank (warrior), one healer (white mage), and one magic dps (summoner). The good thing of playing all three roles is that it gives you a better understanding on how all three roles complement each other.

    Later jobs that become available:
Astrologian, Machinist, Dark Knight - Lvl 30, must progress into the Heavensward (first) expansion, everything below here unlocks in the starting cities.
Red Mage, Samurai, Blue Mage - Level 50
    Gunbreaker, Dancer - Level 60
    Reaper, Sage - Level 70
All of the above classes start at the level required for their unlock quests except for Blue Mage which starts at level 1.
Blue Mages are special snowflakes. They require completion of the base A Realm Reborn content to unlock, this does not include the patch content. They can only do content with an "unrestricted party," which is not allowed for party-matching, roulettes, or current content. And they are not allowed to be used while progressing the main story. The trade off is that they don't really need to care about game balance with insta-kill spells, spells that remove 50% of an enemy's current HP, and Basic Instinct which buffs your stats to the point where you can solo most level-sync'd 4-player content.
Another tip: if you start on a world (server) marked as Preferred or New, you can get 15 days of free play time (once per account) when you reach level 30 in any combat class. You also get a buff that doubles all EXP gains for classes/jobs that are below level 80. This lasts for 90 days or until the world loses Preferred/New, whichever is longer. Additionally, once per account per region (NA, EU, JP, OCE), you can get 1 million gil for getting a character to level 30 on a world marked as New.

    Ranged DPS: Dancer (Machinist)
Magical DPS: Red Mage (Black Mage)
    Healer: White Mage (Astrologian)
Others have mentioned this, but some things to consider when picking a job:

    2) Locked behind story - need to reach Heavensward to access
    3) Starting city associated with starting job

Dragoon (which starts as Lancer) is definitely a class I would recommend starting as, especially if it's already caught your interest. The thing is, all the classes have their own storyline attached (you get a class quest every 5 levels until you get to 50, at which point they are every 2 levels), and these quests are important for more than just story - many of your skills and even the switch from Lancer to Dragoon come from these quests. Dragoon's story not only leads into the story of the first expansion, but you even get a bunch of changed dialogue in said expansion if you're a Dragoon. It really enhances an already good story, in my opinion. And perhaps the best part for you is, that expansion takes you to 60, at which point you can unlock Gunbreaker!
(And as somewhat of a Dancer main, I can confirm that Dancer is definitely the most fun of the ranged DPS. But like Gunbreaker, it requires level 60 to unlock.)

Your point about playing another class to learn how to be a good tank is right on the money. It's what I was recommended when I started out (pay attention to how gameplay goes for you and continue doing what makes things easier for your team) and it absolutely works. Another rec I hear is for players to try one of every role (tank, healer, ranged phys dps, magic dps, and phys dps) because it gives you an idea of what each role looks for, and how best to enable your teammates who are playing that role when you're on your favorite. It helps as well that there's role quests now for those archetypes, meaning you get a nice few chunks of extra lore for bothering to do at least one of each type! I don't recommend doing a bunch of ones at once though, at least for me that kinda leads to burnout. I just played through the story on my DPS of choice and then raised the other ones in my free time.
I've dabbled at least a little in most of the classes and they're all pretty solid, there's just ones I personally like more than others.
I'm obligated to shill for bard since my character has been a bard from the beginning and we're both fond of it. (I play new content on DPS all the time so that I don't let the party down.) Dancer is really easy to pick up and play once you unlock it, tbh. Summoner is also one of my favorite classes to actually play because it feels so butter smooth with its most recent rework and is easy to pick up. It has the fewest cast times in its kit and while it doesn't have the healing utility of red mage, it does have an emergency rez like red mage! Red mage starts at level 50 and its utility is unparalleled. Nothing feels better than popping off on support healing and saving a run. Plus I think in a previous xiv video you said you were interested in summons, so, obviously, that sounds like a good pick. It's one of the starter options if you pick arcanist in character creation! Dragoon and reaper are my favorite melees, though I've capped samurai and ninja too. As at least one other person has mentioned, dragoon and reaper use the same type of gear, so you can always get a two for one on them! Yes, Estinien appears in the trailers- he starts out as a NPC for dragoons and they made him a main character. I love him

If you ever used Quina in FF9 the Blu Mage in ff14 is identical to how she worked.
That said Blu cant run normal content and cant do quests or the normal dungeon queue system.
You can still do a lot as Blu but mostly with other Blu. (blu can be roles like tank and healer too which is neat)
Blu is brokenly over powered but thats the fun of it. It has 125 enemy spells it can learn. Yeah.

If you do want to go after reaper, then dragoon might be a decent starting job until you can unlock the higher level jobs like Gunbreaker and Reaper. Dragoon and Reaper share the same melee gear (the Maiming role). All tanks share the same gear so if you do want to play around with tanks before unlocking Gunbreaker you can also collect tanking gear as well.

What's cool about Summoner is that, because it shares its starting class with Scholar, (Arcanist) they both level up at the same rate, so you get a magic DPS and a healer for the price of one. They're the only 2 jobs that work this way, too.
If you're more interested in tanking or melee, though, I'd honestly recommend trying them out early on, even if they aren't roles you choose to start with.

Reaper is, absolutely, one of my favorite jobs. But you can't *start* with it. You have to get to level 70 to unlock it, just like with Sage. Gunbreaker and Dancer can unlock at 60. Samurai and Red Mage unlock at 50. Ninja starts from Rogue, but you have to complete the L10 Class Quest for whichever class you start with to unlock the ability to unlock other jobs. The *worst* ones, from this point of view, are Dark Knight, Astrologian, and Machinist. Technically you have to be 50, but you have to be 50, have completed all of ARR, including the Patch Content, and entered Ishgard at the beginning of Heavensward. So from a practical standpoint, if you're lucky enough to land on a world with the Road to 80 buff going for new characters, you can unlock Reaper before unlocking Dark Knight. And that's without even trying hard if you stick to only one job up to that point.
They decided after Heavensward to just not do that again and from Stormblood on all new jobs unlock in one of the three starting cities. Gridania has Gunbreaker, Limsa Lominsa has Rogue (Ninja), Dancer, and Sage, and Ul'dah has Reaper, Red Mage, and Samurai.

Believe it or not all the tanks have the same starter kit up to lvl 50. You can play any job you want and you can play all the jobs on the same character, but if you want to get comfortable with playing GunBreaker I suggest practicing with the Paladin or Warrior because it gives you good practice.

Welcome to the ff14 fantasy family!!!! We are so so happy you are joining us!with tanks well you don't start with the really hard dungeons but low one and all dungeons ARE made so you can go in blind and not look up a guide. That said, if you want to know how ff14 works, I would suggest maybe a dps if you are a bit nervous. But often when we get a tank that is new in a party they just say "hi guys! I am new to tanking! " and people will happily help. So if you want to do tanky tank spank.. go for it! You can do it!

This is a good beginner guide for Roles and not the actual jobs if that is something you are more interested in. Especially since I do think Jocat's videos are pretty quick about actually learning individual jobs.
I suggest watching Larryzaur's "Which Job to play" they really show the the jobs individually and makes it easier for you to decide. He is making his own video game about a Cat and it is a RPG so he hasn't done much content for Endwalker up but just getting stuff from ARR to Shadowbringers is good enough for you starting.

since you can do any class with one char anyway it is a good idea to do so anyway - to see and try for yourself with of course a focus of your favorites anyway^^ - but iirc each class has its own persoanl storyline(quests) that progress along with you going forward in that class - giving you more lore/experience/class-sets etc...
but the main selling point are the special quests from what I can remember (and the class-sets look good too) which were sometimes more interesting than the main stuff or just great to fill the grind gap to start the next big portion of the game

I know I’m late to the party but I LOVE Ninja. The speed of it to get in and out of AOE’s without hitting the sprint button is just a proud moment. My favourite thing to do is just basic run and look back to see everyone is trying hard to keep up with you by pressing sprint and even using you to teleport next to and run ahead 😂. But the down side is EVERY other class feels slow as molasses when you change if your use to it. And the other pain is making sure you don’t mess up your combos or you will see 🗡️2 (send highest in DPS right after tank🛡️A) go to 🗡️8 in Alliance raid. 😅

It probably goes without saying, but if you're dead set on picking up a gunblade, it's probably for the best to pick Gladiator or Marauder as your starting class so you can learn general tanking skills while you're working your way up to that point. Playing Gunbreaker as your first tank class is not recommended since you start at level 60 and are given a metric fuckton of buttons you need to learn the function of as well as getting used to having actual responsibilities. Tanking usually isn't that difficult, but you do have to think about things a little differently than if you were a DPS or healer, so it's best to start in the shallow end with a class that starts at level 1.

This is the only expansion where the new jobs are story gated and start at a lower level than you need to be to unlock them, so everything else is correct.

Some of the classes you mention were added with over the course of new expansions, so they require completion of the previous expansion's main story line to unlock. Reaching the start of the expansion allows you to unlock all the classes for that expansion, i.e. reaching the start of Heavensward will allow you to unlock Dark Knight, Astrologian and Machinist.
Summoner was likely recommended due to the base class, Arcanist, being able to unlock both Summoner and Scholar, and they will share the same lvl. This means you get both a dps and healer lvled at the same time, which gives you options in case you want a change of pace (or faster roulette queues).
Level ranges for expansions and the classes introduced:
Heavensward (lv50-60) - Dark Knight, Astrologian, Machinist
Stormblood (lv60-70) - Red Mage, Samurai
    Shadowbringers (lv70-80) - Gunbreaker, Dancer
    Endwalker (lv80-90) - Reaper, Sage

I personally am a Tank main and I have a slight bias but I'd recommend Marauder (who becomes Warrior at level 30) as your first class. Tanking is easy, all you do is make sure you're keeping enemies off the rest of the party, keeping them facing away from your team and using damage reduction abilities (mitigation) to live longer. Not only that but Marauder players start in Limsa Lominsa, a pirate city which has the best layout of the the three (the other two being Ul'dah and Gridania). At it's home point you've got your market place, retainers (essentially your storage) right next to it while the other two cities have them situated in a different zone of the city.

Blue mage is a truly unique job in that it can replicate all 3 roles and even has achievements and rewards for clearing certain difficult content with groups of all blue mages. It is however a rather niche activity since it is limited in what content it can do since it is beyond overpowered. At the moment it has access to 124 spells from various enemies and you can prepare up to 24 of them for any fight

The dancer song is 100% heard during quite a few of the dancer quests (and you can buy it in the gold saucer as well). I will warn that if you're good as a dancer, it doesn't matter how many melee there are fighting the boss, if the tank goes down *you* will be the Tank if there are no other tanks until the healer gets them up. BUT it has damage mitigation and two types of heals so its honestly my favorite to "Red tank" with during boss fights should the tank drop or disconnect. (the amount of 'HOW ARE YOU THE ONE TANKING" from melee classes I've gotten to which I just respond "Dancer: It slices it dices it makes Julian fries!" or "Dancer makes good brain chemicals go brrrrrrrrrrrrrr" requires a third set of hands to count at the very least.)
its a Shadowbringers class like Gunbreaker, so lvl 60 to get to, but often you can get to 60 before you even get to heavensward if you find a world with bonus exp for new characters.
Redmage is a stormblood quest so starts at lvl 50, which means you can pick it up as soon as you're near the end of ARR base game. Dark Knight requires you to be in heavensward even though its a lvl 30 class.

So, being a veteran of XIV since beta for ARR, I can tell you this: when it comes to picking a job, pick what you'll like first off. As for later when you recieve the armoury bonus, I suggest picking up one of each archtype. For me, and this is not a loadout you have to follow, I went with Dragoon as my main, Paladin as my tank, White Mage as healer and Machinist for ranged of any sort. I've played all but Astrologian, which I don't care for, an d found those to be my favorite to play both solo or in a party.
Find your favorite(s) and you'll do just fine. Good luck.

I'd recommend Lancer/Dragoon cuz shares same gear as Reaper which you unlock at LV70 with Endwalker expansion.
Summoner job from Arcanist class, it also shares exp with its other Job, the healer Scholar that uses fairy healing pet. Arcanist is also only dps class that has a resurrection spell it gets at LV12. Majority of Arcanist/Summoner spells are instant too, very easy job to use.
Red mage, it starts at LV50 unlocked through the Stormblood expansion.
Gunbreaker unlocks at LV60 with the Shadowbringers expansion.
Dark Knight, its starting level is LV30. unlocks with the Heavensward expansion.
Also dont forget to do your class/job quests every few levels, they unlock new actions, super important.

Worth mentiooning, dual blades is the Rogue/Ninja class. So it's not a Tank, but it is available in Limsa at around level 10, so anyone who picks up Marauder or Summoner can just do that super early if you're interested. There's also two other sword classes that aren't Tanks, which are Red Mage and Samurai.
Red Mage is a DPS that unlocks at Lv 50 with the gimmick that you swap between using different types of spells (Thunder, Wind, Fire, and Earth magic) and zipping over to the enemy so you can wail on them with a rapier for big damage. It's really fun and at higher levels you get to use other iconic FF spells like Flare and Holy. Also, it can revive people, which is neat.
Samurai is also a DPS that unlocks at Lv 50 and it's about what you expect. You have a katana, you go in, do combos to get buffs and activate three different symbols, and then you cash them out with a big Iaido draw slash that does big damage and has some cool follow ups later on. It's very damage-focused, but you do also get a resource that builds up that you can use to dash over to a target or do a big backwards jumping slash, which is really fun.
EDIT: Oh, huh, didn't realize she was just doing ALL the videos, lol! Well, either way, still probably helpful to note this stuff just in-case.
EDIT 2: Also probably worth mentioning that there's a new DPS class coming in the new expansion. And while we don't know what it is, we know it uses a one-handed sword without a shield and uses Ninja/Rogue gear, so my vote is it's probably "weaponmaster" and might be all about swapping and summoning weapons like Noctus or how Firion and Onion Knight work in the Dissidia games. So we might have another cool sword boi on the way!

As other said.. Reaper starts at 70... AFTER Shadowbringers (it was a class added in for Endwalker along with Sage) So if your looking to play that, but ALSO enjoyed the look of Dragoon... play Dragoon till you can change into Reaper (as they share armor/accessories).
Also, as others said... each single character can literally level up every single class in the game. Summoner and Scholar level up at the same time (ie: if you play summoner for 30 levels, then unlock Scholar, scholar will 'instantly' be at the same level as Summoner, gain a few levels on Scholar, go back to Summoner, and it'll be at the same level now as well) they are the ONLY classes in the game that level at the same time with each other.

Loved your take on FFXIV.. I love watching new folks go through the MSQ so I will be keeping an eye out... that being said I'm a bit worried you're being pushed towards summoner... at least from the sound of it you'd be much happier with melee dps or tank... Lancer>Dragoon is a really fun melee dps you can start at the beginning of the game... or since you really like Gunbreaker starting as on of the starting Tanks wouldn't be bad... but remember you are not locked in to a class like other MMOs... you can always try another if you find you aren't enjoying your first pick.. also don't be afraid to bring up more than one class while doing the MSQ... you'll way out level the Story and will have plenty extra exp to work on more than one class...

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that of the starting cities the Ul'dah intro has a little extra relevant story compared to Limsa and Gridania. It's not a huge difference, just maybe 10 percent more relevant lore up to level 15 if you start there. Also through ARR and really until you get to the current expansion the MSQ generally has enough XP to level at least 2 jobs pretty redily. More if you start on a world with the "road to 80" buff active.

Oh, tanks don't necessarily have to _lead._ No role has that responsibility. It's a team game, and generally played as a team of equals.
What a tank does need to do is be in the frontline, holding enemy attention. Being the first one running ahead can _help_ with this (and is quite easy even going in blind, as aside from some A Realm Reborn dungeons, there's only ever really one way to go), but isn't necessary, as you can get enemy attention _very_ easily by just slapping things once or twice, and the other party members won't die just from getting poked once.
Tanking is a fine role to start in too, at least nowadays. It used to be harder, but now it's quite easily approachable. Though many new players do steer away from it (and healers), just due to it apparently being intimidating.
Reaper's available even later than Gunbreaker, by 10 levels.

In a brief summary, Blue Mage can learn (Currently) up to 124 Spells. It's cracked. Utterly broken. Between spells that deal IMMENSE damage, to spells that can outright one-shot a target (if not immune), the ability to heal themselves, tank for themselves, and more...it's kinda...not hard to understand why they're restricted.

If you're looking to do Gunbreaker I'd recommend starting on Marauder (leads to Warrior). You can't start on Dark Knight and between the two others Warrior is more similar to Gunbreaker than Paladin.
Personally I have 3 mains - one for each role, with Red Mage in the DPS, Dark Knight in the tanks, and Astrologian in the heals. Astro feels like a swiss army knife - especially at endgame - with an answer to anything as long as you plan ahead and know where your buttons are. Dark Knight has a bubble that LITERALLY gives you a whole extra health bar per minute (Seriously. 25% of your max hp as a shield, usable every 15 seconds). And Red Mage is in this space where there's enough of a rotation to learn that I can see improvement when I focus in, but it also has random elements that stop it from feeling like I'd be better at it if I were an actual machine. Also it lets you sometimes completely save a raid by resurrecting 4 people in a row in the space of 10 seconds. And it's so STYLISH!
But I play - and really love - every job. Whatever your preferred rhythm, you can probably find something that gels with you.

I actually recommend first timers start with tank. You can start with wareior or paladin. The player base is very nice to newbies. But for game play reasons tank teaches you the most about the encounters. And you can't truly master any role without a solid understanding of the other roles.
Regardless, go with what you find appealing. Don't concern yourself with something being too hard or whatnot.
Summoner is an ideal choice for beginners though, because its a siverse starting job and you actually level up two jobs at the same time with it. Scholars and summoners share the same base job

Just to clarify a bit: when Jocat said that the Dark Knight's "Best mitigation in the entire game" ability ("The Blackest Night," if you wanna look it up) is offset by having the worst invulnerability skill "makes you die," that's based on the previous version of it, which has, blissfully, been fixed with a recent patch.
It used to be that when you used it, if your HP went down to 0 within 8 seconds, you would basically become a zombie whose HP would not go below 1 for another 8 seconds, but if you weren't healed to full before then, then you KO automatically. If you ended up with a shield healer instead of a pure healer (shield healers don't heal you quite as well, but they erect shields that absorb a good deal of damage before they reach your HP bar) this would be VERY difficult, especially if enemies are still attacking you. Now, you only need to be healed a collective total of your max HP during those 8 seconds, and all attacks you do also heal you some.

0:45 try Warrior or Paladin (Maurader or Gladiator to start) this will give you the practice for when you get the gunblade, plus your gear will carry over. That said gunbreaker starts in Gridania and as long as you have a level 60 you can just take it, but you will have to have own Shadowbringers (just get Endwalker) so if you are on free to play you will have to wait sadly for your gunblade. Don't worry about being optimal right off the bat, you are the leader, but the game is very good about letting you learn.
Some people will expect you to full pull, those people are impatient aholes, do what you are comfortable with, when/if you ever feel like doing a full pull, go for it, but only if you feel like it you are the leader.
Healer in FF14 is honestly green DPS, yes healing is your priority, but you keep DoTs on everyone and do damage when you can. All you need to know on healing in 14 to start is honestly do you prefer thinking in pure healing or preventative shield healing? If the first one, go white mage (conjurer), if the second go scholar (arcanist) they get a fairy that does most of the healing for you (legit can carry the first 4 dungeons by itself usually) early game, your heals are not as strong, but the shielding is the goal... plus you get a free DPS class since arcanist splits at 30 into scholar and summoner
There are a lot of shiny weapons, most of them suck statwise and are purely for glam, so if you see one you like don't worry if it is good, get it, save it, use it for glam.
Heads up on Reaper, it is locked by Endwalker, it is one of the newest, youll need 70 and own Endwalker. That said, good news since you like Dragoon, they share gear, so play Lancer if you want that and when you get Reaper, your armor will transfer and you'll just have to get a weapon.

I'd say in MMOs like 14 the definition of tanky is a bit different than other genres, they'll take a lot of damage, but not necessarily output the most damage, and in a circumstance where everyone but the tank is KO'd, a lot of the time they WILL be able to finish the fight on their own, but it'll take some time

I think Archer or Summoner would be a good start if we are talking about dps because they are both simple but fun and have no positionals. I play Bard and Summoner most of the time. I like that Bard always has something to press and I like that Summoner does a ton of damage with very little effort and can also resurrect dead party members. Also, you get Scholar without needing to unlock it with a quest since its exp bar follows the Summoner so if you have a level 50 Summoner then you already have a level 50 Scholar. All you gotta do is equip a Scholar weapon to change jobs. So that means if you ever want to try a healer, you already have a free one sitting there waiting at your current level.

Too bad the crit range was 100-28K last I ran a raid OH, that's not a typo, btw, ONE HUNDRED to Twenty Eight Thousand (my personal best crit? it's been a few months was it 48K?? frak, oh well!). Red Mage is actually pretty fly. The build up of the light and dark gauges feels a bit slow, but shit, you're backup melee, backup healer, backup black mage, almost a backup tank. I'm a Scholar/Dancer main. I intended to go Summoner when I started, but the dps queue just, didn't sit right with me so early in the game cause I had no idea what to do for the 20 minutes I was waiting to start a duty. Luckily, Archanist unlocks both Summoner AND Scholar, so I didn't have to spend abunch of time levelling up another job. I went healer, INSTANT QUEUE POP- and I almost never went back.. Took over a year and a half. xD Only played Scholar up through Shadowbringers when I started experimenting with DPS cause at that point, I could aways keep myself busy since I had so much unlocked to do.
I'll be honest, I think you should go Tank if you're going to be Gunbreaker. You'll learn the basics of tanking as you level, so when you can swap over, you'll just be learning the job, instead of the job AND the basics of tanking.

For example: If you want to tank Warrior is the easiest class to main as a tank while gunbreaker (AKA Gunblade) is the hardest one. DPS? Which kind? Range melee, or magic? There are a TON of different healers with all sorts of styles. In the end it's up to you what you play...but look into it first otherwise your gonna be confused and struggle...a LOT.

While healing in a game like WoW has you constantly spamming heals to keep people alive, healing in Final Fantasy 14 is more like, you'll cast a heal once in a while, then get back to holding down your auto clicker on your damage spell. You might need to heal more if your tank gets a little in over their head and pulls more than they can actually handle, but sometimes you just can't save the tank. Unless your a White Mage. If White Mage decides you aren't dying... you aren't dying.

For Blue Mage, it's not limited in a sense that it depends on who you fight, but rather it's limited cause some content are locked cause of how good the class is.
You learn skills from monsters like maybe from level 30, then you can use those skills on anytime you want like level 90. It stays forever, as such it has the most amount of skills than any other like can only pick between 24 Blue Mage skills but that's between 124 skills you can choose from which is alot, probably explain why they are not trying to balance it for endgame since that would be alot of work and removing skills to balance it like other classes will take away what Blue Mage was supposed to be in the first place, but by not balancing it, the skills feel that much similar to the actual skills the same monster use though. Thanks to that, it's like the strongest DPS, it can even solo the entire 4 party dungeon on the same level alone hence why you don't need to join in a party, but precisely because it is, max level are 10 levels less, so level 90 cap is the max then for Blue Mage it's level 80, and you cannot join any dungeon that has level sync either cause that will make the party too easy, just shows how much stronger level 80 Blue Mage is compare to level 80 other DPS. Blue Mage is just there for fun for how unique it is rather than doing endgame content with it, lol XD

  • @LazyVanny

Always try to choose one class per role to play at first.
Like for Tanks - You said that you'd like to play Dark Knight / Gunbreaker ( my main )
    Meele - Reaper
    Range - Dancer
    Magic - Summoner
This is so you can change classes if your team needs a certain role in harder raids and you can flip on demand, like if you have someone that is only skilled in Black Mage and you change from Summoner to something else for the team.
But at the end of the day you can play whatever you want, hell some people in our guild only play crafters and gathers then do main role jobs for story only.
So remember to take your time, do all Blue Marker Quests for unlocks, and skip side content if you dont find it interesting or entertaining enough.
Blue Mage is a class I'd love to main but we can never do so. It is sad.
