The Astartes project is based off of the Warhammer: 40,000 (or 40k for short) universe. The Astartes (or Space Marines) are bio-engineered super warriors that serve and protect The Imperium of Man, a vast galaxy spanning human empire 40,000 years in the future. In this video, the astartes of this specific faction were hunting down the leaders of a rebellion against the Imperium. What they found was that the rebels were under the control of an unknown, psychic alien species (the spheres).
The guy in the red coat was something called a psyker, a powerful psychic individual who was able to listen in on the telepathic conversations of the spheres. The red coat with the skull in the middle of the capitol "I" meant that he was also a member of the God-Emperor's Holy Inquisition, the most powerful organization within the Imperium. He became possessed when he lost focus to warn the Astartes about what he had heard and said "Withdraw them immediately!" . In case you're wondering what the spheres said to each other, here it is:
Sphere 1: "Brother, I have failed."
Sphere 2: "We have all failed."
Sphere 1: "The Astartes deny our touch."
Sphere 2: "You must return, break your seal"
Sphere 1: "Impossible! We will never survive"
Sphere 2: "You must. Take them!"
The Warhammer 40k universe is VAST and deep with practically mountains of lore. It is arguably the greatest sci-fi universe ever created. You guys will not be disappointed in learning more about it. Welcome to the rabbit hole, brothers.
Another thing some people also miss, at the end when he's standing on the pillars, in the distance when you see all the giant skeletons, you can see other flashes of lights of the other marines teleport in the same area as the one we saw

  • @terrorsanity
    @terrorsanity 10 місяців тому +128

So the author actually decided to create his own mysterious story to tell within the universe and he absolutely nailed it with insane attention to details. The spheres is his own idea, so even the most knowledgeable lore-people would find it very interesting without really knowing the context about what's happening, they can watch and enjoy as everyone else.

@@arfbark3924 Rogue Trader the tabletop rpg isn’t the same as Rogue Trader the 1st Edition of 40k from 1987. The ttrpg was produced by Fantasy Flight Games as part of a series of 40K rpgs and was set in its own area of 40K called the Koronos Expanse. Yu’vath were also mentioned in Dark Heresy (another ttrpg from the same lineup focused on the Inquisition) iirc but there were no details about them other than they had been defeated by the Angelus Crusade at the founding of the Calixis sector.
Even in Rogue Trader there is very little to go on about the Yu’vath and the sphere connection is pretty tenuous. I think there is only the Halo devices, small spherical devices that turn people into monsters that it is somewhat hinted at may be of Yu’vath origin and a class of Yu’vath autonomous ship that attacks the players in a module.
I am going from memory so I could be wrong about some of this but you hopefully get the picture that it’s a pretty tenuous connection in a pretty obscure bit of 40K media. Although the new Rogue Trader crpg in development by Owlcat games is based on that FFG ttrpg and is also set in the Koronos Expanse so maybe will be less obscure in future.

The fact the details of what's happening are kept deliberately vague is the best thing about this short movie - even works for hardcore 40k fans. Absolutely the right decision. We know this is about Astartes boarding a ship of heretics, and trying to capture a sphere that clearly acts as a gateway to the warp... but that's about it. Leaves so much open to interpretation and doesn't bog the story down by getting into too much detail. I love the fact he set in in M39... nice and far enough away from the timeline we're used to to allow him to do pretty much what he wanted in terms of visualising the warp and the psykers. This is the best 40k short because it shows how vast the lore and universe of 40k can be.

40k is an amazing setting and it's something that always has more to learn even when you're neck deep into it. Would be fun to see you delve further in.
But alongside that is also the Fantasy IPs, which are the original Warhammer setting. I really recommend you checking out the Total War Warhammer trailers since it is a fun mix of cinematic and in-engine animated trailers. And there is a LOT of fun stuff going on there animation wise. Would be more than happy to proviee playists if you ever find yourself in the mood for it.

That ball was an supernatural entity that was captured by humans and was communicating with another entity that was being assaulted by big ones. what it said was to break it's shield and die in process but take tin cans with it. So it took them and was torn to shreds in process and teleported them randomly throught the planet surface. the one that was connected was human psyker that can do some shit like read others minds or just explode their eads with their will. He got caught on listening and was possesed by it. So he got eliminated quite fast without hestiation.

I never get bored of watching people see these shorts for the first time. The cultists/ball/gold statue are an invention of the creator, no other lore connection (but plenty of parallels). The thing that gets me is the opposition did everything **right**. They tried to stop them in the bay, they set up a barricade, they tried to ambush them with an anti-materiel gun, a guy did a mad attempt to use an anti-tank mine before getting stabbed for it, and finally they brought in a heavy gun to try and stop them. None of it mattered, the space marines battered their way through anyway.

  • @dagonofthedepths

11:40 if your wondering why they turned that guy into tomato sauce or about the 1 armed dudes before, there is a type of human called psykers in 40k (space wizards) that can draw power form the warp (complicated but basically hell) to do magic stuff. The problem is when they lose control, bad stuff can happen. Anywhere from randomly shooting powers off, to blowing themselves up, to in the worst case getting possessed or turning into a portal form which daemons can come through. So when they start acting weird It's wise to kill them and keep killing them until you're sure their dead. Also, the other psykers they were fighting where on the weak side just to show you how scary they are. A lot of telekines can crush a person in power armor like an empty soda can.

When psykers get possessed, BAD things happen, and they could open a portal to the warp, and things would come through that would smear every space marine on that ship to chunky salsa, if they're lucky. Think the movie Event Horizon, that's a pretty good basis for what could happen.
So now you know, if the guy who's sitting there doing warp fuckery has one single slipup, you understand why people are jumpy around them. The fact that the Officers hesitated so long meant they really liked him.

Astartes combines so much about Space Marines, even the little details, like the fact they can run, 9 foot dudes the size of a wardrobe running towards you is scary, but he also showed a small detail most completely ignore, when the Psyker stops the bullets, you can see that they are not just huge, but also, rocket propelled.
Fun Fact: After the success of Astartes Games Workshop hired the creator, they also made the chapter that he practically made up an official chapter, The Retributors, a sub Chapter of the Imperial Fists.

Some general info about these Astartes fellows and some nieche details you may have missed!:
The astartes are considered angels. In the first scene, you can see the humans pressing against the wall to move out of their way and not looking at them. Humans aren't meant to bother or comprehend angels afterall.
Their weapons are called bolters, they're huge bullet-based weapons that can function single fire like a pistol or full auto like a machine gun. Their bullets are larger than most conventional pistol ammunition we would use and each individual bullet is not only rocket propelled but also explosive, which is why they ripped through the humans in the 2nd part and why they exploded on the barriers of the psykers.
Those 2 powerful guys they fought are called psykers, they tap into something called "the warp" which is basically like hell but filled with everything any human has every imagined or dreamt of (including every god). They use this "warp" to change reality, these are actually fairly low level psykers. Higher intensity ones can endanger entire planets or reality itself at the absolute peak.
Space marines never waste ammunition if they’re able to. Paying close attention to their fight with the humans, you can see them only use 1 shot per human and always hit it.
They themselves can see in near darkness and bright daylight, but a BASIC space marine helmet is also equipped with infared vision, night vision, visual magnification up to 4x, enhancement of sounds, the reading of atmospheric conditions and atmospheric composition as well as their own body's state like their heartrate, and damage sustained, their vital signs can also be broadcast from their suit, it also tracks damage on the suit, and their view inside the helmet auto-adjusts to the current light conditions in the blink of an eye so its never to bright or dark for them. You can see some of these sensors in the space marine's helmet after his eye got cracked by the psykers, especially after they open and during their entry of the vault. And by the way, if you somehow evade a soafe marine's basic senses, you're still probably screwed as they can detect signs of life like heartbeats or breathing and, correct me if im wrong, but brain activity, all within a good distance.
Their armor looks and sounds like it may be a version of Mark VI Corvus Power Armor, which, despite their size, has the ability to go nearly completely silent and I think even temporarily turn itself invisible.
The orbs seem to be Tzeentch in origin perhaps? That's one of the main chaos gods in 40k, he's a coniving bastard that plans for everything and deals with the occult, evolution, destiny, and mutation in a very literal sense. They were also likely psykers if they could even be considered alive.
The guy dressed in red is called an inquisitor, and he was a psyker himself since he was able to listen in on the orbs and he had black smoke pour off of him as he used his abilities. When the space marines are in that weird orb and are tied up by the tentacles, you can see the same black smoke strike the beast holding onto them as it screams. This is likely the psyker inquisitor attacking it and forcing it to release the astartes, a last heroic act before his brain is (NOT METAPHORICALLY) melted and his body is infested with daemons.
Just before the inquisitor gets possessed and right after he's done listening to the orbs, he uses something called a vox-caster which is basically a radio in their helmets to say "Recall the Astartes!!" - this is why the high ranking space marine signals to the lower rank in the room and why he immediately runs off when he does. You can even hear him yell it through his helmet if you listen close. The vox-casters is why you don't hear them talk. When it cuts back to the 5 astartes around the orb, the main one turns his head which is him hearing the command to retreat, but it’s too late. He was also probably possessed because he talked, and why the space marines responded like that. It was unexpected. When he spoke, he broke his vow of silence and revealed himself to the warp, not only becoming possessed by the orb but also having countless daemons enter his mind as well.
The inquisitor got possessed by a demon or whatever the orb is/contained. The reaction of the space marines is fitting as demonic possession is no joke. If it had not cut off, we probably would have seen them empty their entire bolters into his body before burning whatever remained.
Here's a simple transcription of what the orbs said to each other when the inquisitor was listening in:
Sealed Orb (Orb 1): "Who is here..?"
Orb with 5 Astartes (Orb 2): "I have failed, brother."
Orb 1: "We have all failed."
Orb 2: "The Astartes deny our touch."
Orb 2: "You must return. Break. Your. Seal."
Orb 1: "Impossible, we'll never survive."
Orb 2: "You must... TAKE THEM."
At the very end (if I remember correctly) the 2 silver studs on the marine's left eyebrow are 50 years of service each, and the golden stud is for reaching sergeant rank.
Though it depends on the chapter so it could mean the silver are 10 each, or the silver are 50 each and the gold is 100 meaning 200 in total, or it could be the silver are 50 each and the gold is celebrating 100 years meaning 100 in total?
Again, it depends on the chapter. But it probably means that this guy has seen some action, even if he's not the oldest or nost decorated of marines.
When the camera is turning, you can see small flashes of light on the other pillars in the distance. This is the other 4 space marines arriving.

5:40 "Transhuman Dread" is a thing in 40k. In some people, they see a Space Marine (or Custodian) and they think "It looks human but it's far too big and moving far too quickly and agilely," and they're overcome by a primal fear so they panic, either freezing up or just turning and running. Like in old fashioned cavalry charges - but instead of a heavily armoured dude on a heavily armoured warhorse, it's a heavily armoured dude the same height of the dude and the horse and probably weighing twice as much. People can be trained for it though.

This video is plauded as being as close to lore as possible for fan fiction. Even the size of the space marines. They're huge, genetically altered super soldiers.
The guns (boltgun) they use shoot bullets that are literal miniaturized rockets. You could see in the video when they were rapid firing at the psykers the propulsion of the bullets were still going. When they exploded around the shield (also why the humans were being blown apart when shot) is a great visual on the power of the bullets they use. It takes a lot of power to use those weapons, and with the added organs these soldiers can fight longer.
A good example of organ modification is present from the scene where the arm got burned off. When the arm didn't bleed is part of lore. The Larraman's Organ that gets implanted creates more blood and causes the blood to clog at bleeding sites, creating a patch real quick. The visual that his blown off arm wasn't bleeding is a big visual on this detail.
There's so much to cover in the video from the psykers, the heretics, the chaos demon, warp, demon conflicts in the warp, psyker points of view and so much more but all of it is lore based.
