I started playing a month ago and picked Black Mage so I guess i am wholly ignorant of how much work I'm putting myself through being only level 69 but i love the class so far and really it's just gotten better and better from the start. Only off putting thing is that i do have to relearn my "rotation" every few levels. Summoner also looks like a fun magic class as well. (my other class iv'e been working on is Dragoon......because obvious reasons)

@@cadinsordacovale Iv'e been splitting the MSQ between both Dragoon and Black Mage each are level 65-69 and I just finished HW and now am at post content.
the cool thing about summoner when leveling is the rotation basically stays the same, you just add new spells into the spots where you had nothing before, and the existing spells become flashier versions. you go from "use fire summon, do 1-2-3, use wind summon, do 1-2-3, use earth summon, do 1-2-3, wait until fire summon is off cooldown." to "use fire summon, do 1-2-3, use wind summon, do 1-2-3, use earth summon, do 1-2-3, use big dragon, fire summon is off cooldown by the time big dragon ends." to the same thing, except big dragon turns into phoenix every other usage. changes nothing about the rotation but the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc rotations have different spells literally just in the exact same spot.

1000 needles was useful at low levels; once you can deal 1000+ damage with any other AOE spell (or perhaps less if you consider casting time) it becomes useless.

They're considered a "Limited job" meaning their kit is not balanced around the rest of the game on purpose. As a consequence of this their level cap is also always 10-20 levels below the current level cap (depending on what part of the expansion you're in) to keep them from blowing through current content. Because they're not balanced around the rest of the game, you also can't queue up for content like you can on any other job and instead can only go into some content and only as a pre-made group or solo, that way it doesn't ruin the experience for non Blue Mages. TL/DR: think of Blue Mage less like a class and more like optional side content. Fun if you're into it, but intentionally kept apart from the rest of the game.

Got maps leftover from shadowbringers or need to make your coin purse heavier? Blue Mage and old treasure maps. We're still holding out in more content but Square keeps insisting us being around relic stuff would be a disaster, or that blue mage in deep dungeons is a terrible idea.
