Thank you so much for your two videos on this. I just got a PSA Sabre ar10 18inch in 308. First time at the range using aac 150grain ammo i got through 40 rounds then had light strikes then it wouldnt work at all around 50 rounds. I took apart the bcg with the help of someone at the range and it dumped 5 primer pieces out the bcg. My retainer pin was a U shape and the firing pin was stuck really good into the bcg. It looks like even their sabre line have the exact same issues. Again thank you so much my man. This is my first rifle and i couldnt get through 3 mags.

I have a budget and want to get the best bang for my buck and from what I’ve seen Palmetto State Armory looks to be my best bet. Thanks again for all the info!
Thanks for watching! Yeah man it was more fun than anything else. Time consuming, but I learned a lot more about the system with the Trial and Error method. Yeah man so far the PA10 rocks! I took it on another hog hunt this past week, and scored a bunch. It functioned 100% as it should and I never worried about it’s reliability! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! If you want to invest in making the system a bit more reliable and run more efficiently, the parts I’ve upgraded with in these videos really make this thing shine
I've been running LAX 147 FMJ on my SFAR set on #3 gas setting. I had a failure to feed and two failures to eject during the first 40 rounds. I lubed up the BCG and its run flawlessly. I couldn't specifically say LAX Ammo is good or bad because its all I've shot through this rifle. I did have a primer pop out running LAX re-man 147gr. Glad you took the time to figure out what was going on with your PA 10 and shared your solutions with us. I have been looking at the PA 10 with a 20-inch barrel and the more info I get the easier it'll be to make a decision. I'm not even close to being a competition shooter and don't want to be. 1 to 2 inches of my point of aim is fine for me.
No problem. The gun will average out as a 2MOA gun out of the factory, which is fine for most people. Just understand that each experience is different. My biggest critique of PSA is their quality control is hit or miss. Some guns come out good and others not so much. I would say that it’s still a good gun to buy if you want to build off of it and make it your own. Otherwise in my opinion it’s worth it to save up for a higher quality AR10. Not trying to dissuade you, as long as you have realistic expectations it can serve you well! Cheers!
Just got my PA10 Gen 3 a few weeks ago and noticed the overflow on the primers. Been looking into it for a while now. My local smith said the same thing yours did. Ammo. But after shooting a bit and reloading myself, I knew it was something else.
I love your videos on this (which I just found this weekend). Thank you for the detail on testing, as well as the parts you replaced and in the order you did, with their effects. My retainer pin isn't as bent as your previous video showed of yours, but I've only put 500 rounds downrange as of this writing. The pin did show wear that I would consider excessive, however, so I believe I am definitely having the same issue as you. I will probably be making the exact same modifications, and doing research on the timing issue myself. Now that I know that's a good part of the issue (if not all of it).

Thanks for watching and I’m glad these videos serve you in some way. It was a frustrating experience speaking to smiths who chopped it up to ammunition and nothing else. But I’m glad I was able to figure it out on my own. Timing is a huge factor with AR10/LR308 pattern weapons. Adding the parts I did will more than likely solve your problems! If I could do anything different, I would probably add a better adjustable gas block. The one that comes on the rifle is fine, but it’s hard to measure what setting it’s on, as you have to count the clicks from it being fully closed and remember them. Something like the rifle speed adjustable gas block might just be the ticket to being able to see what setting you’re on and the effects at each setting. Got mine a few months ago, added a heavy buffer spring and 5.3oz buffer before I even bought any ammo for it. So far it's been great, however the Sig MSR 1-6 I mounted came loose at the range. Both the pic rail mount and the scope ring screws. I've retorqued everything and added loctite but am going to get a different mount if it happens again. I really like the msr/pa-10 combo though, won't even be disappointed if I have to shell out extra money for another mount.
Agreed! It’s a good setup for me, and proved itself very effective on my hunt. I’ve thought about getting an Eotech 5-25x at some point to experiment with long range stuff.. so we’ll have to see! Thanks for watching!
thanks for this video i have a Aero AR 10 with a ballistic advantage barrel and run 150 gr and 168 gr through mine but a friend using the same 168 grain had some blown primer with his rifle now his is a custom built with proof research barrel he had the bent retaining pin as well as some blown out primers with debris coming back into his carrier . i have sent your videos to him hope this helps . great videos sir and again Thank You

I had to do the similar things to my psa10 gen 2. Adding a heavy buffer weight worked but adding an adjustable gas block was huge.

Started out with an old S&W M&P 10 with an 18"barrel and still have it with the MSR 1-10.
Now recently and BCA 16" on my lower with a Aimpoint Pro. it is working well but still brand new.
As a side, also shoot a Springfield Socom 16.

Very helpful, I am having very similar results with my 6.5 creedmoor, ejection swipe, case not ejecting well, fortunately no primer punches. Unfortunately mine is not picking up the next round at all. I have SOL barrel and they suggest an A5 buffer tube and an H2 A5 buffer.
I definitely think it's over pressured, its unlocking the bolt before the case is able to be extracted. So far its shooting .75 MOA so i sure hope i can work it out.
Well that’s great accuracy! Hope it works out for ya! Yeah, just have to slow that carrier down. Start with the buffer and spring and see if your results change!
Same issue here with my psa .308. I only have the primers pop out on occasion. Will try to tune gas and switch out the spring and buffer weight. I'm also using a huxwrx 7.62 TI. That would add extra back pressure. Looking to upgrade to the JAKL .308 when it comes out. Thanks for the video, really helpful material.
I problem! Glad it helps. Definitely add a heavier buffer and a stiffer spring. Springco Orange spring and any heavier LR308 buffer will work. After that tune that gas block and you should be much better off. I run mine with a Dead Air Nomad-30 which isn’t even a low back pressure suppressor like the 7.62 TI, and don’t have any high pressure signs. Yours should work even better since it’s a low back pressure suppressor, after you’ve made the necessary part swaps. Hope it all works out for ya! I will say.. that 308 Jakl looks nice🤙
Accuracy snobs might talk a lot of shit on Faxon barrels, but I love em. Great profiles, and really affordable. Also a big fan of BA/Aeros barrels to, those Hanson profiles are just wonderful.
I’m have yet to try the BA barrels but have consistently heard great things about them over the years. So far my faxon barrels have been great performers. I haven’t had sub-MOA performance out of them, but they’ve been durable and the pencil and gunner profiles have been my favorite as far as the balance of weight savings, accuracy and cost. I’d love to try their match series barres some day
Impressive work that you put into your rifle sir. I’ve become a bit obsessed myself with looking into this platform before actually committing. I want support PSA because the owner seems a like a genuine 2A supporter and they don’t have share holders. But I might go with the DD5v3 because the DLC coating on the BCG and it’s by most reviews, firing system seems to be tuned for the 308 punch. Thank you for this documentation of your PA10 journey.
Absolutely, thanks for watching! It was a fun journey and very informative. I’d say that if you have the money or you’re willing to save, the DD5v3 would be a great option! Plus if for some reason you’re not satisfied with the accuracy or you want something lighter weight, Proof Research makes carbon fiber or stainless steel barrels for the DD5. This issue isn’t exclusive to PSA LR308 rifles, so if you happen to see the issues occurring within any LR308 rifle you go with, these videos will steer you in the right way to fix it! The DPM System adjustable Buffer for AR-10s should be wan upgrade you definitely look into. The weight stacks as the bolt goes back! So you can help eith the gassing and lower the recoil. Might not be bad to look into a rifle speed gas block too.

Same issue on home built AR10 in 6.5cm, but isolated to SIG Ammo. No other ammo had burring or primer issues. No more SIG ammo, no more problems. Sorry you had to spend the extra money to correct.

I was almost ready to send it back to the manufacture until I stumbled across this video.

The AR 10 is a unicorn compared to the AR 15.
Hey, glad it helped! I figured this would be an issue even more so with the ruger SFAR being a smaller framed rifle shooting the same cartridge! If it helps, I’ve been reviewing a POF Rogue which is also a small framed AR10/LR308 rifle. You are able to swap the buffer weight for a heavier one. In my case I switched to an H2, rather than the standard carbine buffer it came with. It made a big difference. If it’s the same with the SFAR the buffer spring might be proprietary, but that’s something you could check with Ruger! If it isn’t, then a stiffer spring and heavier buffer will help you significantly. Working in tandem with the gas block, you’ll probably be able to tame the gun much better! Indeed these rifles are unique! Best of luck!
@@SabertoothDefenseSystems Yes, the SFAR buffer spring is proprietary at 13.5 inches long. The buffer is a standard carbine at 3 ounces. Currently I am running an H3 with good results.
I think Ruger is using the carbine buffer weight to keep the rifles overall weight low?
@@theboatshoptb Could very well be that or for cost sake. Hope you can get the gun dialed. If that still doesnt do it, I know there's a website called heavybuffers of custom weight buffers for AR10 and AR15. You might be able to try there and see if one of the custom heavier buffers might do the trick. Its a lot of trial and error with AR10 or 308 style AR guns. Just the way it is. Hope that helps

On rare occasion I will experience a failure to pick up another round, I could open up the gas block another couple of clicks to correct this I’m sure.

I had some serious over pressure issues even after adjusted to the point where when running a can it wouldn’t hold zero and it even sheared off two both catches

@@Evan_Macke Honestly that’ll probably be the next upgrade I make. The adjustable gas block suffers from the same problems others have, being that the adjustment screw seizes due to carbon build up. So I’ll probably upgrade to the Riflespeed gas block at some point! Good luck with your rifle!

Great video! I'm having issues on my AR10 build as well. I cant get that BCG to lock back on last round. I have the Odin Adjustable Buffer (@ max weight), Adjustable Gas Block (rifle length gas tube) and tried both lighter spring and hard spring. I tried making the buffer as light as possible and nothing worked. My research lead me to believe that the bolt catch could be the issue as well - its a KAK bolt catch and videos stated that the Aero Precision bolt catch should be used. Also, I'm going to switch the spring to a flat spring, but also switching to a full length fixed stock as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I think you’re on the money as far as your thought process. I’d switch out the bolt catch first, not expensive really and if it didn’t fix the problem, oh well.. you’ll be running what the videos stated so not really a downside there. If you decide to switch to a full length stock, go look at the offerings from heavybuffersdotcom (can’t list it out the correct way as UA-cam will probably nuke the post). They have offerings I wish I would have tried when I was trying to fix my problem and upgrade parts. They make a full length heavier rifle length buffer and spring that may just solve the problems. As for the bolt not locking back, I’d start with the bolt catch then just sacrifice some ammo starting at the fully closed position and slowly opening it up to see if you achieve lockback. Good luck!
That paint scheme is awesome! Did rattle can or ceracoat. If you did rattle what stencil is that? If you don’t mind me being a copy cat.
I did it myself with rattle can. Not hard I just printed a picture of any kind of digital pattern and drew it onto a notecard and cut it out. Used it while I sprayed. Probably less than $20 total

I just bought a areo AR10 it was used but never fired i think it was pro built because there is not a scratch or mark anywhere and usually the home builder will put a mark somewhere so i have no info on the gun it did come with a A2 stock so i hope i don't have any of the pressure problems the gas block is none adjustable i hope i don't have to change the gas block it is by far my most unfavorable parts to change that is the double pin ones.

So I have a CMMG Endeavor 308. I shoot hogs with it. I was in the same exact boat. I’ve always shot my 556 DD at hogs and never had issues with freedom munitions. I ordered 300 rounds and I have had awful malfunctions not every shot but blown primers with bad burrs, and hard punched primers. I didn’t want to blame the ammo like you said so I bought an adjustable gas block. Got it where it needed to be still same result. Swapped ammo. Went to hornady 150 grain SST. Shot 10 hogs in one field last night no blown primers just bad burrs. I shoot 3 times tonight it hangs up, blown out primer with bad burr. I’m assuming I’m going to have to do the buffer deal. Not sure why AR10 is so finicky but I don’t have time to keep messing with it. Lol I’ve got hogs to get rid of.
Yeah man I would definitely throw in the Sprinco orange spring and a heavier buffer. It will also cut down your recoil for better follow up shots, especially on hogs. It was really a trial and error type of thing. Irritating in the moment, but now that I’ve made all of my changes it runs really well without any issues at all! Just used mine to smack some hogs in Texas last week. Worked like a showing machine. Let me know how it works out for you!

Do you have any description of tuning the PA10 gas block? Specifically knowing which setting is which without observing brass? There is zero instruction provided for it by PSA. The gas block is not even mentioned once in the manual.
Yeah I know, really frustrating huh? I wish they would have provided some! And unfortunately there is no way to know the setting rather than by closing the gas block all the way and dialing up from there. I did that and tuned up until I had reliable feeding with about 4:30 ejection and then left it at that setting, and it’s been great. But yeah unfortunately there isn’t a better way of doing it and PSA could do better with including instruction.
How do you tune the gas system in the PA10? I can't get any clicks out of it.
Mine is the Gen 3. The gen 3 comes with an adjustable gas block and a long Allen wrench that you can use to adjust the gas block adjustment knob.
What are you going to change your muzzle break to?
I put a dead air keymo 3 port brake on it to test the rifle’s function with my new suppressor. So far so good

It’s a good gun for a budget AR10. Mine had some issues I had to overcome, but I fixed them all relatively quickly. You can look at all of the videos on my channel about it and see the issues I had and how I fixed them. In the end I ended up spending more to get it working without any issues than the rifle is probably worth. If you’re only going to use it a few times per year or for one hunt per year I’d say go for it. If you’re going to use it a lot, I would say maybe look at the Sig 716i Tread. For a just a bit more money you most likely won’t have the issues I had.

Sorry for all the questions I've been back and forth for the last month on what to get that won't kill the bank lol I've held some for 1600 and thought I don't want to spend that right now but shit I want one bad for just in case
How much did it end up costing you ?
I think when all was said and done for a functional rifle without the optic but just the parts needed to get the thing running flawlessly: $1500-$1600 that doesn’t include the optic or bipod. I got my PA10 for roughly 800-$900 if I remember correctly. The most expensive parts I added on were the JP high pressure bolt and the faxon gunner barrel.
how much does the rifle weigh?
With the 18” Faxon gunner profile barrel (which definitely reduces the weight), and the bipod attached the gun weights just about 10.5lbs unloaded. It’s a beefy gun, and running a stock profile heavy barrel will increase the weight up to about 12lbs unloaded. There are ways to lighten AR10/LR308 platforms which I’m currently experimenting with!
