    You can lever the chuck off carefully using to flat headed screwdrivers…
    Or strip the drill down…it’s not difficult

    Why dont DeWalt use screws like other manufacturers instead of pins? Is it to make it is difficult as possible to swap out a damaged chuck so people keep buying new drills?

    I have taken the chuck off the drill without a problem because I needed an old fashioned connection to a saw that I changed using a Dewalt Battery drill.
    I did it using an angle grinder and thin cut blade which I sliced through the two sides of the chuck head only to the edge so as not to touch the rest of any part I wanted kept and then I usd a cold chisel to split the chuck which worked a treat because the chuck is high tensile steel.
    Hope that helps.

    I found an easier way to remove chuck:
    I put a vicegrip on bottom of chuck and hitted down with a hammer a few times and came off within a couple minutes.
    Descubri una forma mucho mas facil y rapida de quitar el broquero: puse unas pinzas vicegrip en la parte de abajo del broquero y le pegue varias veces con un martillo hacia abajo y salio en menos de 2 minutos.

    Hey Milto, ‘noseknows’ shows how to get them off with out damage. You pull the drill apart and tap the shaft out with the chuck attached. Then apply plenty of heat to the chuck to release the locktite. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

    It needs to be opened up so the chuck and gearbox can be removed…then access to the pin is possible

    Heating chuck open hole with small hot air gun and then instantly to cold water may also help, some drill chucks are glued in and only heat will help. I have one Makita that also no way to remove the chuck, impact screwdrivers never helped for me.

    To be honest, if the chuck breaks, I would just buy a new drill. The Dewalt atomic has the same specs as the dcd777, and isn’t very expensive.

    I bought a new 796 hammer drill lasted about 3 weeks and locked up found out I can't change the chuck cause the pin. Dewalt can kiss my rear. probably never buy dewalt again because of this

    I have seen one video where the drill, was opened up and the chuck and drive pin removed and then separated in the vice and another where the guy gently praised the chuck away from the housing little be little until the chuck and drive pin came out in one piece and again separated in the vice. Check out those vids. Buying a new drill because of a bad chuck and giving up is not an option. I would also like to see how DeWalt does it. These are excellent tools so worth the effort to fix.

    I just replaced mine (777) watching this video. I put an Impact 10mm torx on the chuck The impact socket is 1/2 drive. I put a ratchet and turned (by hand, not impact gun). Then I just tread the new one. No damage. New chuck now. $20 off eBay

    Hi mate, been checking out your videos some good info on your channel, is the 996 worth the money compared to other DeWalt drills?

    • @coffeemaddan
      @coffeemaddan 5 років тому +1

      For big augers and spades or hole saws it comes into its own. Only issue I've got is that my chuck has broken and now the drill's a write-off. Dewalt told me the chuck's only warranted for 3 months. For this reason alone, I'd avoid it. Otherwise, it was a beast.

    • @joshuaelliot2020

      Thanks for the reply mate! Thats frustrating with the chuck, my drills see some abuse so probably avoid this drill and find something more robust then..

    Love the channel Milton!
    For a diy/homeowner, would you recommend the 791, 796, or 996?
    I just can’t decide between the three models.

      You can't go wrong with the 996. I bought one a few days ago and am in love with it.

      @@jamessparks5966 I looked it up and to be honest it's kinda ugly especially the aluminium boulge on top hahahah I think I might go with the 12v DCD706D2!
      12v dewalts are the cutest things ever also very powerful unlike the bosch 12v which is nothing but a glorified screw driver!

    Good informative videos mate. Stuck between Dewalt DCD996 and Hitachi DS18DBL2 (DV18DBL2 hard to find in Denmark), what you recommend between these two?

    The only way to remove the Dewalt 996 drill chuck is to open it completely, just so it can be accessed to unlock it. Work to be done only by a professional as the drill is very complicated inside.

    I am in the market for a compact but powerful dewalt drill!
    The new atomic series seems promising but I hate the plastic chuck that it comes with!

    ............ and 🤔? How to take them off?

  • @TSGEnt
    @TSGEnt 3 роки тому

    So basically, bin it and buy a new one. My keyless chuck is also hosed up. IIf anything I get to continue to use the batteries in the new one I buy. Shame on DeWalt making a drill that breaks in a matter of 5-6 years. I have a 60yr old drill that uses a keyed chuck and it still works swimmingly. Today's tools are simply made with planned obsolescence in mind. Expendable and therefore a moneymaker of the long haul.

    Haha bang on Wee man chopped mine right up took a grinder to it it wouldn't let that chuck go and it was a Makita if it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck back to the drawing board

    These are shitty drills from the start.. I had both the 796 and 996.. Both of them were appaulingly inaccurate from the get go.. Id advise anybody thinking that the chuck is an issue, not to bother replacing them at all, and just buy a better drill.. I replaced the chuck on the 796, had to remove the gearbox to reach the back of the pin, Found out that its not the chuck thats inaccurate, its the housing that the pin sits in, Its a friction fit thats supposed to be captured all around the pin by bearings, the tollerance between the pin and bearings is so loose that on both drills I could move the head of the chucks by over 2mm due to the slop in the internal fitting of the pins.. Horrible drills... The chucks are fine, there hight quality.. Its the drills that are shit..

    This is an example of -- oops. Falling asleep again. ...example of a lonely man who needs to hear himself talk. If he would just focus on the job I'm sure all watching it would be grateful and learn how to do the job. I'm not here to be entertained - but to repair the drill ---and, move on!
