Absolute perfect and easy to follow video. Just saved me from buying a new drill. Did it in ten mins. I couldn’t insert the Allan key as the chuck was totally broken and would not hold anything. I held it as tight as possible in a vice and cracked open the shaft with a spanner. Hey presto it came off easily. Thank you for uploading 🫡
Hello I'm from Brazil, it was very easy to remove the chuck with your explanations, thanks for sharing your knowledge. The model I exchanged was the DCD 796.
I was a little sceptical about the prising off the Chuck but low and behold it came off fairly easily and I got the shaft unscrewed as pictured there are more complicated ways shown on ytube but yours is by far the quickest I’m just waiting for a replacement Chuck to arrive now. You have saved me from getting a new drill. Thanks
I read a lot of more complicated methods of dismantling the unit but thought I would give this a go although I was not confident that prising off the chuck would work but it all worked perfectly exactly as shown in video - replaced the chuck and the drill works like new....Thanks
Ok, this is looks doable. You gave a huge favor to DeWalt. In think they are too ignorant or arrogant to admit that this kind of design held back a lot of people to buying these "screwed" models. By watching your method i might change my mind and buy one of these.
Thanks so much - like the other folks I had exactly same problem with my DeWalt DCD795. You method worked a treat and have saved me an expensive repair or a new one - there's nothing wrong with the drill itself, thank you Sir. Great video.
David Kelly iv got the dcd795 also. Iv got a bit stuck in chuck and chuck is stripped. Jw its will wrk the same way with out 795 as shown in this video?? And a question for both of you guys, can ether of you give me a link to the chuck i need th purchase? Agin iv got the 795. Thanks fellas
@@rickyrickharris4908 Hi Ricky sorry for delay. So I'm in the UK and I managed to get this De Walt DT7012-QZ chuck which has worked brilliantly and was super easy to install onto my drill. it's a lot heavier than the original chuck so it kinda behaves like it's in hammer mode most of time, even drilling timber but it's fine. Works great - hope this helps
I used my DCD 980 to mix thinset and sure enough chuck froze up so need to replace it, i watched countless videos on how to replace and hope this works. Going to get the same chuck you used, this exactly why i come to You Tube even with the annoying commercials! Thanks
Thank you sir… perfect instructional video.. been frustrated with my DCD791 for way too long.. did just as you instructed ( had to add some Blaster to loosen it up was getting nowhere ) and wham she came right off… Thank you once again… can’t thank you enough 👍
Wish I found this video prior to dismantling my DCD797 to attempt to replace the chuck. Didn't go so well to say the least. LOL. Ended up upgrading to the DCD805. At least I have the Rohm chuck still as a spare.
Saved my Bacon. worked well for me despite having what I thought was no pin. the pin head snapped off allowing me to change the chuck. I am happy with that!
Was able to just do this with the 791 ! This model has the chuck more sunken in so the outside is a little damaged after i was done. But since there was a small drill bit actually stuck in my chuck I think this was my only option. Thanks for this video!
Excellent video I haven't seen this method of removing it before. I have repair videos on UA-cam too. I have never tried one of these chuck repairs before. Liked and subscribed well done my man.
Although I was sceptical this method worked extremely well for me the chuck prised off very easily without any damage to the surrounding housing -maybe I was lucky for once-. The method for removing the chuck from the spindle also worked well I used an old Vileda mop metal handle cut in half for extra leverage on the allen key and Spanner which I thought would split due to the thinness of the tubular steel used in its construction but didn't. Excellent Instructions thank you very much.
Great, thanks. What to do if teeth are all the way open and don't close to grab the 55 torks or large allen wrench to losen chuck? Please advise anybody.
Worked a treat ! Saw the full dismantle videos before I found this and didn’t fancy trying that. Hoped this would work for me and it did, Not only that it was easier than I thought it would be, Thanks
Thanks for the info. I ran into an issue reassembling though where the drill was stuck in hammer mode. Turns out the bearing and gear under than metal cap with 3 screws are press fitted to the shaft, so you have to press them back on otherwise it’ll just hammer.
I have the same problem, and took the three screws and plates off, but I can't see how to press it back in, I've tapped it with a hammer gently, To no avail
@@DoItWithDave thank you Dave for posting a useful video , there are so many on you tube that have no idea really what they are doing but just stumble along , but yours was very sensible and informative. Thank you

Great video, the best method I've seen. He recently purchased the DeWalt DCD800, which came with the chuck with some annoying movement. This model has the same problem, it does not have a fixing screw. Will the Rohm chuck you used work on the dcd800? Thank you so much. Greetings!

I found an easier way to remove chuck: I put a vicegrip on bottom of chuck and hitted down with a hammer a few times and came off within a couple minutes.
Im gonna squeeze my chuck tightening sleeve in the vice and make it bite at least I think I can . I took channel locks and put them in the vise ti squeeze harder and turned the drill to get my bit out si I think you can crush the sleeve and get it to work . I didn't smash it with that method but it won't tighten on a bit but a hex insert it will but slips . I think this will work .
I did this to my drill just to test it to see if I could get it out as you did, I did get it out quite easily, but when I put it back it only operates on hammer whatever setting that you put it on, can't understand this any ideas
I ran into that issue a bit later after doing this. I used a c-clap placed on top of the chuck and on the back of the drill (ferring strip on housing) to seat the double D fitting. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@timjones6637 if you're referring to the new Chuck in the video I believe it can be used to loosen and tighten the chuck to the shaft instead of using an Allen key?
Idk if you've tried tapping the teeth in the chuck and spinning it a bit to try to get them to tighten. It may be possible to get a big pair of channel locks to hold the bottom of the chuck while you untighten the shaft.
Ive got a bit stuck in mine and used channel locks to losen chuck well it started spining alright but bit didn't loosen at all now iv got a free spinning chuck with a bit stuck in it lol. So at least i can get the chhuck off ill find a way to loosen it once its off
So I noticed that the chuck just came out with prying so I used a large vice grip pliers to grip the chuck and I waked the pliers with a Mallet, gave it 10 good hits and it flew off. Took me literally 1 minute.
@@DoItWithDave also the front of the chuck has a hex bolt that you can put a 5/8 size socket on and really grip it well with a ratchet. So you don’t have to use a Allen key, mine was stuck open so there was no way for me to put an Allen anyways. But a crescent wrench and a 5/6 socket made quick work of it.

Actually after looking at most of the videos here on UA-cam regarding removal of chuck on these DCD drills, your doing it wrong, the way your doing it, it removes the stem which you do not want to remove, it’s done exactly the same way as they chucks with the set screw, if no set screw just simply tighten with a large Allen wrench and hit with a hammer, once loose just unscrew and screw on new chuck
@@DoItWithDave if your only replacing the chuck, the. Chuck is the only thing that should be separated from the drill itself and when your buying a replacement chuck you will only get a chuck, no stem, so basically your doing more work than needed. Peace
