The notion of this fearless creativity, a way to defeat performance anxiety and the need to succeed at everything which a lot of us (myself included) deal with, is really powerful I think.

      There is so much literature, discussion groups, open maker labs, ... as well as parts, cheap mini computers, ... etc. available today - an Arduino Board and a few servo motors will only set you back a few bucks, so even if you screw up in your first tries, it's not big deal (and you'll definitely learn a lot in the process).

    I'm tearing up. That was me. Her past self was just like I was, and to be honest I still am. Performance anxiety is one of the worst feelings, because it holds you back from doing these incredible things you know you will enjoy. I still struggle with it every day, being a student and all, but I'm going to take Simone's words to heart because this is incredible. I might not be able to make useless robots (yet), but perhaps I can start at my struggle with making art and perhaps make a useless drawing OF a robot. Just because it's fun.

    • @leon0918
      @leon0918 2 роки тому +1

      Did you make a lot of art of robots, for fun?

    • @jackielearnsandteaches
      @jackielearnsandteaches Рік тому

      Hey there, I can relate. I also have bad performance anxiety. I loved making art, all throughout my life. Eventually, I went to college for art. By the time I came out of it, school had given me performance anxiety about art, as well.
      I stopped drawing, for years. I didn’t know how to make art for the joy of it anymore. Recently, I started acrylic pour painting. The nice thing about it is that you end up with a finished piece of art, one way or another. Start to finish, you can be done in half an hour. Do this enough, and you start to think of yourself as an artist who finishes art. Once you move past that performance anxiety, it may become easier to move that confidence to other kinds of art. I recommend it.
      It’s kind of like Simone was saying about approaching it differently, playfully. Find something playful, and you’ll find your way into art.

      @St4rTr3v1Ut10n 6 років тому +15

      They are useless in that they don't provide anything except entertainment, which is subjective as literally anything can be entertainment. A Starburst wrapper can be more entertaining than a roller coaster or a video game to some. It took you more words to describe why they're not useless, than to just say they were useless. Such is postmodernism.

    I'm too old to marry you, but can my wife and I adopt you??
    Thanks for creating one of the few Ted talks that I didn't think was elitist pablum. As a computer programmer with over 40 years experience, I have seen over and over again that we learn more from our failures than our successes. Giving someone the opportunity to fail as they learn is the best way to mentor anyone. Reading books on how successful people did it is a waste of time, reading books on how people failed is far more useful. I don't want to know the 10 things Elon Musk did to become rich, I want to read about the 10 things Johnny Depp did to become poor so I don't do them.
    Your machines are not useless, they help bring joy to many people.
    Thank you Simone. Hoping for the best for you.

    • @johnhoss2247
      @johnhoss2247 5 років тому +8

      This comment is interesting because its really kinda harmless on the surface but it makes me think about something. It reminds me that if Simone were a man, you wouldn't say you wanted to adopt him. In fact, it would be kinda weird. That would be infantilizing him, and you wouldn't do that to a man because it would be disrespectful and "emasculating".
      But Simone is a woman, and saying this is supposed to be cute and endearing or something. But why? Shes an adult, a grown woman and more than capable of taking care of herself. At the very least, she is over 18 years old. She doesn't need new parents.
      Its like that character trope of ultrapowerful women in cartoons who are gimped with child-like intellect and maturity. Why do this?

    I don't know what it is about you l, but you are such a joy to watch. Your enthusiasm and humility are both mesmerizing and intoxicating. It's so refreshing to see someone express herself and open up in a way that is so honest, it's akin to the innocence of child-like wonder. Ultimately, it's (IMHO) you being you in the most genuine sense possible which is intensely captivating, not because of the beauty you possess on the "outside", rather a reflection of the beauty you possess within. You are truly a treasure. Thank you for sharing that beauty with us, the viewers. I smile and laugh (along with you) every time you put an invention to the test. It is 'joy' in the most basic and innocent yet, fulfilling of senses. It's you being YOU, which is something fantastic. Thank you.

    This talk by Simone was both humorous and insightful. She explored how her journey of building “useless” machines helped her overcome performance anxiety and embrace creativity. Simone highlighted the importance of learning through failure, showing that the process of invention can lead to unexpected personal growth and opportunities.
    Simone’s idea of creating machines that are designed to fail was a clever way to remove pressure and focus on the joy of creating.
    The realization that enthusiasm can replace anxiety was a powerful takeaway, demonstrating how passion can lead to unexpected successes.

    Great job Simone! You make a good point, as an engineer, I’m more likely not to start a project if I don’t think I can make it work from the beginning, and I think there’s a large portion of our imagination that we lose as we grow up, and those who don’t lose it end up inventing great things because they can’t be talked out of their idea, especially by themselves.

      There is a lot of value in getting a degree in Software Engineering. Just graduated with mine. While self-taught is a good way to start, there are some things that you have to experience to learn. Like, my college has a bunch of classes that mock an Agile development process, and we even have a class dedicated to learning how to work within a team, our SWE department head is honestly, the best in my opinion (obviously, I'm a bit biased). I think without that kind of knowledge, starting a job in the SWE world is fairly difficult. The degree also helps you to demand a MUCH higher salary(currently have a starting salary of 71k, and I'm so ecstatic about it! :D)
      Shoutout to Shippensburg University CS&E department!
