Did you know he sang in England just hours before. He flew on Concord to make it happen. Only musician to play on two continents in one day. Phil rocks !!!
I know it's a small thing but I love when he hits a wrong note on the piano, towards the beginning of the song, smiles and moves on with, possibly, more focus. Life long performers always seem to rise above any mistake while they're performing. So cool
Phil doesn't NEED glitz dancing around the stage half naked and all the gimmicks attached to it! HE has everything that represents PURE UNADULTERATED TALENT! This is what makes an ARTIST and a LEGEND. PHIL has it ALL!!!
Said Collins: "That song was written during my first divorce. My first wife and the kids had gone and I was left there. The song was written out of experience as opposed to a 'what if' song. If that personal stuff had not happened to me at the time, I probably would never have made an album, and if I was to have made an album eventually, it probably would have been a jazz/rock thing. Without that stuff I wouldn't have felt the stuff I felt sitting at a piano night after night, day after day writing stuff." peace out
When Phil Collins was young he played the drums for Muddy Waters at the Chicago blues festival and played the drums for Eric Clapton in the 1980 at one of Eric’s concerts This man was just God given talent He could play instruments and had a great and unique voice and some of the best song writing skills on the planet
Against All Odds was written, composed and performed by Phil for the movie of the same name. It looks like this performance was from Live Aid on 7/13/85. The concert was held at Wembly Stadium in England and at RFK Stadium in Philly yo help raise money for the Ethiopian famine. Phil performed in BOTH countries that day by flying from London to Philly. Queen’s performance at this concert is regarded by many as the greatest live set in rock history. It’s great that you appreciate singer/songwriters. You need to hear some early Genesis with Phil. 🔥
I remember this. It’s a shame that Live Aid never had a complete video filming. Some of it’s been lost. I was in my late twenties at this point. This song won the Oscar for the film of the same title. I saw the live concert shortly after. I’ve seen him twice, both in the 80s. His shows were always incredible to see.
Phil Collins was a true musician. He understands the music he writes, tone, pitch, melody, and harmony down to the notes on the page. He plays multiple instruments and wasn't a 1 trick pony. He wrote some of the best songs I've heard outside of my love of hard rock/heavy metal.
This performance is from the Live Aid concert in 1985. He was the only performer to play live at both places on different sides of the globe on the same day. Phil Collins played this song, and then a few with Sting at Wembley Stadium in England, then jumped on an SST jet to Philadelphia, where the other half of the concert was being performed. He arrived in time to play with Eric Clapton, and just for kicks, sat in on drums with Led Zeppelin for their set. Also being a huge fan of Tool, you should know that the members of that band were influenced by Genesis (Phil's band). You should listen to the studio version of Mama, by Genesis. In my opinion, it is one of Phil's best vocal performances. It will give you chills. You fell down the wide rabbit hole with Tool, and it is just as wide with the band Genesis. Both with Peter Gabriel as the lead singer, then Phil. I enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work.
@Dante, wow!! Thanks for that Info man. Phil had to fly to different Continents in the same day 🌍🌎. I never knew that he "sub'd" 🥁 for Led Zeppelin👍. The respect level just went up a few more levels for Phil 🐐🙂😎, not many left...🙂 Your *Tool* analogy, 🤔💭👍🎶🎵. Mine would be; 🐐of🏀. Without Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, many more, etc... We probably wouldn't have any Michael Jordans, Lebron James, Kobe (RIP😢), Steph Curry, many others, etc....
He sang with Genesis since 1970 thru the 90s, so you are right, his voice can carry over a rock band, but still sound so good. He is pitch perfect and has impeccable timing. His emotion is so, so well felt. (oh, and he played leading roles is a couple movies too!)
He played every instrument on his album 'Both sides', that he recorded on his own. He also can switch languages as he sings, proven by the extras on the Tarzan cartoon Disney film. It is amazing how he went from being a great drummer in a band so much more.
P.S. he got asked once how he rated himself...he said I'm a songwriter first, a drummer second and a singer third, he never even mentions his piano playing 🤣 I would have kidnapped and married Phil if I'd have got close enough, 🙄
@@CristyB66 Yeah, and you would probably have both been divorced by now. Just because someone makes you fall in love with their talent and artistic expression doesn't mean they're a person you'd want to be married to...or, for that matter, a person whose company you'd enjoy for the period of a single night out, apart from the star-struckness.
I love phil amd everything he has done in his career phil has exponential talent his upbeat music makes me happy, his sad songs make me cry his music has filled my life with joy for over fifty years PHIL COLLINS IS GOAT❤
Drummer, pianist, vocalist and composer - what a genius. Fun fact: Phil’s showbiz break as a child was as the Artful Dodger in the musical, Oliver!, in London’s West End.
In 1985 Phil was considered the hardest working performer for playing Live Aid at Wembley and then hopped the Concord the same day to perform Live Aid in Philly. Iconic!!!
I will never forget seeing him live in 2018 (and I waited for this concert since 30 years!) he was opening the concert with this song… I bursted into tears like a 13 year old Teenie and couldn’t stop crying ! It was just overwhelming!
Beautiful music! Thank you Sir, for sharing it with us.I am British by birth. I became an American citizen last year. So it is especially heartfelt for me. God bless you. And God bless this great nation always, the United States of America.
This is my all-time favorite song of his. And yes, he does write pretty much everything he's put out. He's done a few covers, but his catalogue is about 98% original.
His rendition of 'Always' by Irving Berlin is luscious. He and Amy Keys (and separately with several other beautiful female singers) do a memorable 'Separate Lives' by Steven Bishop. And of course his versions of 'A Groovy Kind of Love' (The Mindbenders) and 'You Can't Hurry Love' (The Supremes). But yes, Collins is a prolific song writer with most of his material by himself. "Blood On the Rooftops' is amazing (co-wrote with Steve Hackett)
Some of his deepest, heartfelt music came from his divorce...the most heartwrenching to me is: If Leaving Me Is Easy...I hope you will react to it..ty..💞✌️
Mike Rutherford of Genesis started recording as a solo singer with his band Mike & The Mechanics after Phil Collins had gone solo. Mike had a No.1 before Phil did though, with his song The Living Years.
Take Me Home and I Wish it Would Rain Down are two of my fave Phil Collins songs. Another great artist you should check out is Simply Red, the official music video of Holding Back the Years is a must. Man that's a gorgeous song. Mitch Hucknall is the lead singer.
I recommend "Mama" from Genesis, where you get to hear Phil's excellent vocals and the band's compelling musicianship. I saw them on that tour, and it was jaw--dropping.
Congrats on listening to more than "In the Air Tonight". Phil Collins is obviously more than a one hit wonder. Check out my personal favorite "I Wish it Would Rain Down", which has a great music video...
You should listen to the original track with drums, if you haven't already. Also, Rick Beato does a great breakdown of this song, highlighting some of the things you mentioned in the video (songwriting, pain, "nobody does pain like Phil :-))". Great reaction, thank you!!
This was whenbthe music industry was indestructible amazing singers music was really selling and creative really was crafted.. no jokes no gimmicks the real McCoy.
Phil will always be a legend in my mind. Thank you for pointing out and showing appreciation for how multitalented this man is. Hoping for a time when “musicians” and “bands” that actually play instruments becomes the norm again. ❤
He was originally just the drummer of Genesis, but when the original lead singer, Peter Gabriel, yes, the guy that sings "Sledgehammer" with the crazy music video that played 47 times a day on Mtv back when it first came out in May of 1986 when i was 12...i definitely remember it well. When Genesis started auditioning new lead singers, Phil would sing and teach the songs to the prospective singers, and when no one really seemed right for the band, they more and more started to realize that their new lead singer had been their old drummer the whole time lol. So Phil actually did an "audition" and they all decided he was the best fit and that's history. Best decision they ever made. I think Phil is better than Peter Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis all day. Peter is great as a solo artist as well, obviously, he had great success. Phil is a great, legendary solo artist as well, and Mike Rutherford, with his "side project" did pretty great as well, that would be Mike and the Mechanics. The whole band oozes freaking talent from all sides.
Both Peter and Phil are great in their own artistic way. They were much more progressive with a challenging sound with Peter while Phil changed things later and had a more soulful voice!
This is my favorite Phil Collins song. My 2nd is probably easy lover. I believe that features a guy from Earth wind and fire potentially which just makes the song complete.
Another Day in Paradise, Dance into the Light, Both Sides of the Story, I Can't Dance(studio track, loud!), Invisible Touch, I Missed Again, I don't Care Anymore, Don't Lose My Number, Susudio, One More Night, Take Me Home, I Wish it Would Rain Down(official video), Do you Remember, Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, Everyday...and so many many more.
Phil Collins is amazing. This is a live concert that was held in Philly. I saw him a couple of years later in NY in a stadium. This is also from a movie with Jeff Bridges and James Woods. Movie is very god also.
I was a manager @ Universal Studios Hollywood during the 1990's & 2000's. Twice during my years I spent approx 6 hrs twice with Phil & his son, just walking him around like a normal dude wirh his son taking in the park. Over my many years I was with a who's who of celebraties, musicians & politicians & Phil was top of the list of a real guy who was just out enjoying the day with his son. (maybe next time you a Michael Jackson reaction I'll drop a line of the three afternoons I spent with him & his entourages) Keep the faith my friend!
Phil Collins is a musical legend. And a great, impressive song writer. His lyrics hit hard. But other than that, he is good people too. He gives a lot to charity. Love him. ❤️
Isn’t he marvelously talented? Yes! I wish him a swift return to full, good health. I am British , so I have been ware of Phil Collins for a long time. Love your work Phil!
What a pro! Mistake made, wry smile, and then soldier on without missing a beat. Back to the song with all the emotion we have come to expect from this man. Great tone, pitch, and timbre.
When this song was released, I had just broken up with a long time love. I cried over this song hundreds of times. Thank you, Phil Collins, for helping me through a heartbreak. I will always Iove your music.
This song was written for the movie of the same name! Starring Jeff Bridges and Rachel Ward back in 1984. I loved the movie and the song and Phil Collin’s, who, unfortunately is suffering from a terrible disease and cannot sing or play instruments anymore!😢
He's also a talented actor. As a kid he played the Artful Dodger in 'Oliver' the musical in the West End (famous theatre district of London). Thats probably why he can project his voice so well.
Phill collins was my dads favourite he died when i was 6 months old and he was 22. He used to sing all these songs to my mum so they are very special to me. One more night is a great song (played at my dads funeral) Dont care anymore another great Obviously in the air tonight
He was the drummer for Genesis, when their lead singer, Peter Gabriel, left the group. He started singing, and the band knew they had their new lead singer.
Have you ever listened to Hall and Oates, one of my fave duos ever from late 70s-80s; check out their songs She's Gone and Sara Smile to start, they had a huge string of hits back in the day!
I would like you to reflect more on THE lyrics of His songs. What is he singing about, what is the mening of it, the message. Because he is an artist with a big Hart who actively takes a stand for homelessness, childabuse, egoistic societis and so on
You should watch the end of the movie, he wrote this song for it, and he caught every nuance of the girl watching Jeff Bridges leave, it made me hold my breath. He would have gotten the Oscar for it, but he went on a talk show and got cocky about how he was a shoo in...right before everyone voted, and they smacked his nose by voting for another song. Best movie song scene ever. Still gives me chills.
He is my number one artist and has been for 50 years, I love Phil, and yeah, he is ridiculously talented he actually started off as a child actor..😳 he was doing theatre with a much younger Jack Wild in the 60s and Phil played Dodger, in Oliver, Jack who went on to play Dodger a couple of years later in the film version Oliver with Mark Lester as Oliver and I just know Jack modelled his Dodger on Phils version in the theatre, Phil made a film over here called Buster, he played the lead role AND wrote a lot of the scores played throughout the film..Based on the story of Ronald Christopher "Buster" Edwards (Phil Collins), one of the thieves involved in "The Great Train Robbery" of 1963....😊👍 watch the movie, you will enjoy it...
I probably already commented. I watch this stuff repeatedly when I don’t want to have to keep up. I’ve met Mr.Seger. That isn’t a brag, he don’t know me from Adam’s house cat. I only say it to let you guys know the man is nice. Polite. Kind and generous. Friendly, and tolerant. He worked as hard as his crew, and took care of his people. He was present for the set up, active and moving during sound checks, stayed with his people until the absolute end.
Live aid he played in England then jump on the now non-existent Concorde with was a three hours trans Atlantic flight and performed in Philly later that day, that’s how popular an artist he is. He is amazing
great reaction! You nailed it on songwriting. Ive seen Phil solo and with Genesis 20+ times from 1978 to 1994. I have avoided this song for 17 years for the reason you mentioned: it's a sad song. The line "There's just a memory of your face" digs too deep from a breakup with my soul mate in 2007. We burned bright for a short time. But my career kept me away for 300 days or more a year. It was my calling to do that job. I chose to stay with my calling rather than doing local runs in SoCal. I'm still paying the emotional price of that decision..but it did not diminish the rewards of my career choice. Sometimes, you may be a handful of people who can do something great that other people could never do..and you rise to the top - you only gotta give up a wife at home waiting with a drink for you, family and all the other things that normal people have. And when it's over and you can no longer do it, it's over...and you live with that choice made 17 years ago. If it wasn't for the joy in watching people like yourself discover this music, I couldn't listen to this song. Thank you for the smile my friend.
I sang this in band I was in a million years ago. I had broken up with my husband and was heartbroken and devastated emotionally. It was difficult AF to sing but life saving at the same time. It made for great pathos, the chick singer, eyes closed, belting it out with tears streaming down her face, as the lights faded to black... Ah, those were the days 🥺
This movie was where I first heard Phil Collins. Usually a drummer as in Genesis and their singer left and they went out on their own And we got to see the Phil Collins and how great he was!
Polo, I've been listening to Phil since the '70s, so it gives me such joy to see you react to one of his big early hits. This was used as the theme to a film of the same name. Collins has been a major force in many of our lives. Sadly, now suffering from Parkinson's disease. Love your reactions. You have a great ability to hear and see the nuances of the songs and artists.
This is my favorite Phil song of all time. When his voice breaks a little on the hook, I get chills every time I hear it. Saw him live for the 3rd time in 2019. I wish him well, I know he's having some health problems. He is a true legend
The video your showing is from Live Aid. Phil was the only artist to play both UK & US Live Aid concerts that took place on the same day, he played London in early Afternoon then got concorde to Philadelphia to play in evening.
If you watch the video of ‘Live Aid’ in Philadelphia the same year you can watch Phil Collins playing the drums for the BeeGees. He is simply filling the role of drummer. He and the BeeGees are good friends.
I don't know if Phil was underrated, but he was definitely underestimated. Not only has he done some great songs, but he is a legendary pioneering drummer who appeared on alot of other artists' records. People don't know all he's done. He's GOAT in his own right.
He was definitely not underrated. More like there was so much from him that people grew tired of the Phil Collins sound and kinda started to make fun of it. He came back strong though especially with the Tarzan soundtrack

One More Night by Phil Collins. 🙏🏼
Thank you !❤❤❤
See the movie!!! Its amazing!!
You are doing a great job. Thank you for the cifeos.
This song was from the film called against all odds
Did you know he sang in England just hours before. He flew on Concord to make it happen. Only musician to play on two continents in one day. Phil rocks !!!
Hell Yes! I remember that amazing day!! I was 16. Nostalgia running at MILLE ( A thousand)
The mistake was so cute 👍🏼
Voice of an angel
The mistake is what makes this music good. It wasn't too polished or recorded.
I know it's a small thing but I love when he hits a wrong note on the piano, towards the beginning of the song, smiles and moves on with, possibly, more focus. Life long performers always seem to rise above any mistake while they're performing. So cool
same
That's the beauty of live performances. They are real.
Totally agree!!
He could make any mistake and song and I would still love him❤
He Never played the piano on this tune again, after the mistake.
Phil writes his own music.too. Words, music, arrangements...Total genius.
Phil doesn't NEED glitz dancing around the stage half naked and all the gimmicks attached to it! HE has everything that represents PURE UNADULTERATED TALENT! This is what makes an ARTIST and a LEGEND. PHIL has it ALL!!!
He also write the songs! Someone told him once that he "didn't have the face" to be a front man with the group! He sure proved them wrong!
Phil Collins is a massive talent. How ever much credit he gets, it aint enough.
Said Collins: "That song was written during my first divorce. My first wife and the kids had gone and I was left there. The song was written out of experience as opposed to a 'what if' song. Rough.
Above all else, he's a drummer. One of the best.
His Drum Duets with Chester Thompson are things of beauty.
When Phil Collins was young he played the drums for Muddy Waters at the Chicago blues festival and played the drums for Eric Clapton in the 1980 at one of Eric’s concerts This man was just God given talent He could play instruments and had a great and unique voice and some of the best song writing skills on the planet
"And you coming back to me, is against the odds, and that's what I've got to face ..." People need to hear this, as true today as the time he wrote it

Phil’s performance set a world record for most miles traveled during a concert
It was a really good movie too
Correct!!
JFK Stadium

Ah, yes... angry Phil. Love it.

May favorite Phil Collins song ever. Always gives me chills.
There's not many singers that can paint a picture with lyrics like Phil Collins can.
Beautiful music! Thank you Sir, for sharing it with us.I am British by birth. I became an American citizen last year. So it is especially heartfelt for me. God bless you. And God bless this great nation always, the United States of America.

There was a movie ‘AGAINST ALL ODDS!” THis was the thyme song. Love the song, loved the movie!
Phil’s penmanship is outstanding!!!! So says Austin Tx!!!!! 😎🍸
You should listen to the original track with drums, if you haven't already. Also, Rick Beato does a great breakdown of this song, highlighting some of the things you mentioned in the video (songwriting, pain, "nobody does pain like Phil :-))". Great reaction, thank you!!

Yep. Philip Bailey.
You'll love Phil singing--the song MAMA...great emotion and intensity. He wails on it.
A Master of all trades! And his songs always have meaning within the context of his life, relationships and what he feels strongly about 💕
This was my introduction to music 12 years old when I heard it and fell in love with music
Yeah I call these my Lego songs….lol.. playing Lego for hours on end listening to great 80’s music 🎵 among other decades

Phil Collins is a musical legend. And a great, impressive song writer. His lyrics hit hard. But other than that, he is good people too. He gives a lot to charity. Love him. ❤️
Have loved PC for 40 yrs. His voice unforgettable.
Check out another great voice - Roy Orbison vocal range - I'm Cryin', Running Scared, etc....
I've always loved this song Polo !! Thanks for your reaction to it
This guy PHILL COLLINS is pure Talent, he can do it all, One of the Greatest Performances of all time, No question about it...
One of my favorite songs --and performances--by Phil Collins. That little smile, when he hit the wrong piano key, just captured my heart.
Against all odds was written for the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for the 1984 movie Against All Odds.
One more night is a great song (played at my dads funeral)
Dont care anymore another great
Obviously in the air tonight
Phil Collins to me just represents music in 80’s/90’s. He’s the voice.
He was the drummer for Genesis, when their lead singer, Peter Gabriel, left the group. He started singing, and the band knew they had their new lead singer.
I've never heard him be off key ever. But he did make a piano key mistake at the top of the song. Still to me he is Legend!
He wasn’t afraid to show it with his face either lol
Have you ever listened to Hall and Oates, one of my fave duos ever from late 70s-80s; check out their songs She's Gone and Sara Smile to start, they had a huge string of hits back in the day!
Yes, please!
I would like you to reflect more on THE lyrics of His songs. What is he singing about, what is the mening of it, the message. Because he is an artist with a big Hart who actively takes a stand for homelessness, childabuse, egoistic societis and so on
I LOVE this song. It’s permanently on my playlist.
One of the GOATS. Sad that he can no longer play the drums but man he was so so talented.
This is why we love him
I probably already commented.
Consider he just flew on the Concord from London to make this Live Aid performance. Loved the 80s…and Phil. Thanks Polo
Live aid he played in England then jump on the now non-existent Concorde with was a three hours trans Atlantic flight and performed in Philly later that day, that’s how popular an artist he is. He is amazing
Powerful song with a powerful voice gives me the chills Everytime I hear it
great reaction!
Phil Collins's voice is just amazing and live and it is so flawless.
I agree, song writing brilliant, and the voice, and the emotion he effortlessly portrays. The man's a genius! ❤👏🥳
This song was a soundtrack to a movie of the same name. The movie version had an orchestra behind it, and it was really good.
This song is from the movie 'Against All Odds', with Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. Good movie; great song. 😊
He and the BeeGees are good friends.
he writes his own songs 2, in v 70s he was v drumer in band genisis, lead songer left n phil took ovr lead vocals. was huge in v 80s hit after hit.
I'm prob your mom's age, and I'm loving watching our old music! It's really so good.
You were trying to find a word to describe Phil Collins' voice. For me it has always been.... haunting.
