No lip syncing or auto tune just pure talent.
VERY HARD to find these days. Zero talent out there lately. I'm so happy I've gotten to enjoy 70's, 80's, 90's that's my music. Love Phil Collins. Sad to see his health deterioration. 😢
😂 I miss JC!!
Yeah you know it
Amen
Well said! Todays talent is fake and synthetic. Our generation is long gone. The true authentic generation is long gone 😢
The 80’s. When music was actually music.
If you weren't there in the '80s it's impossible to overstate how BIG this guy was, and how well his "everyman" persona made him accessible to the old school like Carson. Truly phenomenal.
@@circusbrains That is most definitely NOT what I said.
Well said and exactly.
100% this!
Was there - yep
As Peter Gabriel (first Genesis vocalist) once told Steve Hackett (ex Genesis guitarist), you can't take a piss in a hotel or restaurant bathroom without hearing a Phil Collins song being piped in through the speakers. 😅
“I’m not the singer, I’m the drummer. I’ll just do the vocals until we find a singer.” - Phil Collins, 1976, Genesis: Trick of the Tail sessions.
Phil was an absolute hit machine. He played the drums, piano, and that voice! Solid gold.
SOOOOOO right! And let's not forget: He did progressive-rock, fusion-jazz, pop, soul and he was a great entertainer. Also very impressive to hear him without a band, just him and Daryl. ❤
Edit: Phil also was a producer, for example for Tina Turner, Philip Bailey, Frida and Eric Clapton.
He played in both London & in the US, flying on the Concorde, for Live Aid. A great man, a great artist & performer. And a (bleep) of a drummer! Yikes!
Phil was the MAN! no denying it
@@jlc7300 He is, ma boy.
I was shocked he could play the keys..
Guy with a mullet in a sport coat sings from his heart on “The Johnny Carson Show” and makes you cry 😢. Only in the 80s…
People often forget in the mid to late 80s; Phil Collins was a superstat!
And a superSTAR too!
SUPER STAR of the 80s 90s!
I was in college. His music still has me connected to 2 great loves in my life ...sure do miss it ❤
From about 1980 to 1995 he was LITERALLY everywhere. Genesis career, solo career, or recording with other artists....and acting in movies and TV. And let's not forget Live Aid London and Live Aid Philadelphia in the SAME DAY!
@Private Penguin Yep PP, jumping on the Concorde! He was a lot of fun on the Miami Vice episode "Phil The Shill".
Imagine this, it's christmas eve 85', it's snowing outside, it's cold, there are christmas light everywhere, the city is grey but beautiful, your car is your only warm and safe place while you go wandering arround town, you made all of your christmas gifts, loaded in the trunk, you're going home, the warm lights on the street, traffic lights and amazing kinds of ads they'd put outside are coloring your windshield as you're driving, you've got the radio on, there's a sense of calm in any radio host's voice, nothing to worry about, and suddenly Phil Collins is next, his new title "Against All Odds" is playing and you're listening. The music is amazing, the feeling of warmth come both from your little car and this song, you're feeling alright, you're feeling good. People have no cellphone, people are still connected to each other, you know you're going home and going to see your family, your friend, spend an amazing time, and this song's tone make you appreciate all that, it makes you appreciate the era you're living in right now, without even realizing it.
80's-90-s were something else, probably peaking society. There will never be another one, world is too far gone, it was our last moments of pure freedom and tranquility, our last moment to have such simple yet precious times, living in the moment. Today, As Phil says, "So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space and there's nothin' left here to remind me"
Born in 1971 here.
I felt that, thank you ❤
Thank God I have my old journals from that time. I wrote every single day from summer '85 until late '93. My memories are 'fossilised' in my brain...
Insanely talented all these years!
That little humble man owned all the frequencies of the world at some point. I wonder how many people’s life’s he’s change, helped through breakups, tough times of helped getting people together or just pure joy. He is an astonishing musician and extraordinary songwriter. One of the GOATS no question about it.
I grew up in the 80's and Phil Collins will always remain my ALL TIME favorite artist with Genesis and without - forever!
They were the best of times.
Roof is Leaking hits me in the feelz every time.
Phil is going through health issues at the moment, praying for a complete healing. Gifted and talented artist, much respect.
Phil Collins was a huge part of my younger years. I'm now 62. Just have nothing but fonder memories and times of that era.😢
No matter what you say about Phil, he's just another stupendous musician (drummer) and artist with his trademark singing voice. Just wish him a very good health and happy life ❤.
One of the best performers of all time.
💯 ❤❤❤❤
😂
best ? 1:49 😂
@@taelabahouhh yeah.
@@taelabaho yes. He just said he was doing show after show after show. It takes a toll on the voice. He sounded amazing, considering it was live and no fakery.
I love how he just pushed through his voice cracking.. pure professional. Also a nice man. My kid sister met him and Disneyland in the mid 80's and he let her and her friends hang out with him and his family instead of chasing her off. He even honked/waved goodbye when they were leaving the park at the end of the night. Class act.
9 nights on the trot is impressive but not good for the voice. Luckily this was near the end of the No Jacket Required tour and his voice held up especially on Live Aid.
Wonder why he went to falsetto instead of his belting tone like on the record?
Phil said he had a cold and when stripped back he can sing it more gently plus he had to save his voice for the rest of the No Jacket Required tour.
Where did his voice crack? Brilliant performance all the way around.
He also was a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein....Take care of your sister bro
“The Roof is Leaking” is a massively underrated track. I wish it had been played live more often. This is a great performance
no its not...its not that popular...thus its rated just right
One of my favorite Songs
Thanks for the tip.
Just a tiny thing but it epitomises why I love Johnny and he’s the absolute best. At the start of the interview when he makes sure to repeat the guitarist’s name to give him a hand, whilst also putting over Collins’ - mentioning the reaction he got from the crowd. So subtle, but such a classy move. Johnny really was pure class.
I was thinking exactly that. Johnny liked and admired good guitar players. He had Parkening on his peniltimate show. It's on UA-cam somewhere. I even heard him make an off-hand joke one night to which the punchline was "Julian Bream!"
No Jacket required - The album is named after an incident at The Pump Room restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Collins, entering the restaurant with former Led Zeppelin lead vocalist Robert Plant, was denied admittance because he did not meet the restaurant's dress code of "jacket required" for dinner. Although Collins donned a leather jacket, the maître d' argued it was not "proper.while Plant was allowed in.
And apparently palm greasing the maître d' to allow a leather jacket was not appropriate at that time... hahaha
Extremely talented, and the guy owned the 80's. Great musician. It's a shame that his back injuries took such a toll on his body, but he still has the voice.
FACTS! HE OWNED THE 80s!!
Drumming for decades and steroid injections has done that. It makes your bones brittle.
Not only his voice but his charm. It was an honour to attend Genesis farewell tour and see him still as a front man and his son as drummer.
Sorry but the voice is shot.
I was 11 years old when FACE VALUE was released. I made my mother drive me to Disc-O-Mat on Rte. 4 in Hackensack N.J. To buy it on cassette. It was the first album I’ve ever owned and cost me $4.99 and remains in my top 10 favorite albums to this very day.
The 80s were magic and Phil Collins was a big part of that magic.
Incredibly talented. Love him so much.
Back when talent mattered. Nobody cared if you had a pretty face or could fit into some pre-packaged, white-bread, boy band.
Thanks for posting - I'd almost forgotten how things once were and why the 80s had the best rock music ever.
Phil had 7 number one hits on Billboard. Almost had 8, but Foreigner's "I wanna know what love is" held the amazing "Easy Lover" at #2 for 2 weeks in February 1985.
Wasn't Easy Lover a Philip Bailey song featuring Phil Collins?
@@brendendesimone9278 They had equal billing.
You hear of “5 Tooled” baseball players , there is nothing on a Diamond they can’t excel at . Phil is a 5 Tool musician .. God Bless him and his health moving forward .
Phil deserves his solo spot in the HOF dammit, it's unreal this has not happened
Induct him for Brand X too.
he is not in???? why?
Because R&RHOF is just a glorified Hard Rock Cafe. Still waiting for Phil, Jethro Tull, Yes, The Monkees.
@@northridgewood5918 Not to mention Iron Maiden, Boston, Journey, Styx, Tears For Fears and Foreigner. Yes is in HOF
💯
Phil not only performed as best he could in his older years, he also taught music to aspiring musicians. He shared his talent in so many ways. A true gentlemen of the musical arts and music in general. No scandals no outrages acting, just pure music from a pure talent. His music will live on for many years to come. He touched the hearts of so many people. God Bless Phil Collins.
Johnny Carson was the best American chat show host, no one has surpassed him.
Was just thinking the same. So conversational, nothing forced. Like him and Phil Collins are just getting to know each other at a cocktail party or something. Also Phil is amazing 🤩
Johnny wanted you to go to bed in a good mood.
Even when he got political, it wasn't anger filled like today's hosts.
He got you relaxed before laying down, not worked up.
The fact he was singing about a very painful part of his life truly makes this an amazing song. You can't fake signing from your soul.
Please Don't Ask was a song he wrote that almost ended up on Face Value, but wound up on Duke instead, is an absolutely heartbreaking song, that was about the end of his marriage. That was a very underrated song.
One of my favorites artists of all time.
Let's take a moment and point out that Johnny took time to mention guitarist Daryl Stuermer. Not many hosts would do that.
Don't forget he's also arguably the best drummer in the history of progressive rock. Listen to his drumming with early Genesis (back when Peter Gabriel was the singer), as well has obscure projects like Brand X. Just a phenomenal musician.
His drumming with Brand X is some of the best I've heard. Very complex and super musical. People that don't know how insanely great he is at the drums are missing out.
And those Brian Eno albums
Yeah I think most would put Neil Peart as the best progressive drummer in history but Phil is certainly a highly talented drummer and all round musical genius.
Phil is/was pure talent. Nothing fake here. God bless him as he goes through his physical trial 🎉
My dad had me going for many years when i was a kid. He told me Squeegy from Laverne & Shirley was Phil Collins 😂
Hilarious! I cant unsee it now 😂
I love seeing these clips of Carson and the Tonight Show. Total class.
Between 1980 and 1986 Phil Collins made four albums with Genesis, three solo albums, produced and played on Phillip Bailey's, Howard Jones' and Frida's albums, and toured constantly with Genesis and solo. The man was a dynamo.
One of the Greatest...Phil Collins...
Still looking for Phil's version of "I wish it would rain down" on letterman, but this is special too!
Against the odds is a beautiful gem!!!!!
this dude always had so much talent and completely unassuming. he does not need the guitar. He played this very same song with only the piano month later in front of 72,000 at Live Aid and killed, it was unbelievable
Daryl Stuermer on guitar. So glad I was able to see Phil Collins both with Genesis and aolonback in the day. The Duke tour at the Greek was incredible.
You were so lucky!!!
A great singing voice he was blessed with and a terrific drummer, fine songwriter.
All that talent in many areas..... AND he literally wrote what was officially regarded as the best drum fill of all time. I don't need to say what it is.
Phil Collins was the man in the 70"s with Genesis! Phil Collins was the man in the 80's/90's! Phil Collins was and always will be one of the greatest musicians of all time!!
No. Peter Gabriel was THE MAN in Genesis.
@@timetowakeup6302 peter gabriel was overrated.
@@amandabooth-he9gu
😂
@@amandabooth-he9gu yes he was, his solo stuff was a drop off from Genesis
@@amandabooth-he9gu he never made the same quality of music as Genesis, his solo music is more pop. Sorry but true not just my but fact.
So happy to hear this. I forgot how much I loved Phil's music.
Against all odds & In the air tonight. Two of his best IMO 👍
Check out Inside Out. Don’t remember if that was when he was solo or with Genesis. But either way, just a cool song!!
@@Konastang18 No Jacket I believe
@@Sandkei Aha. Correct you are!!!
Thanks.
Mad Man Moon & Ripples you meant? ;-)
This was right before my 20th bday. Phil was on fire back in 80's. Always loved his solo stuff and with Genesis.
Phil’s undeniable greatness, and Daryl’s talent and loyalty through all these years!
Phil was always such a class act! So remember him, the original broadcast on Miami Vice!🎉
Phil did such a great acting job on 'Phil the Shill'.
We sometimes forget the simple essence of a truly gifted performer - strip away all of the production and trappings and bare your soul to an audience with just an instrument, your talent and your voice. I saw Phil Collins in concert during this era playing solo on his own tour, as the drummer for Robert Plant on his Big Log tour and as his regular role as drummer for Genesis. And then as the only musician to play both Live Aid concerts in London and Philly by way of a quick flight on the Concorde. One of the legendary great (and very humble) rock stars of our lifetimes. What a great opportunity to sit and listen to him be a regular guy under extraordinary circumstances chatting casually with Johnny. With Julian Lennon to boot! Wow!
Such beautiful songs Phil sang. ❤

I remember this was nominated for the Oscars. No Phil! Stupid Oscar’s had Broadway singers cover rock songs back then. Johnny was correct!!!!!!
If you thought the Oscars were stupid then, woke PC virtual signaling garbage has completely ruined them today.
Except, I believe that year, someone like Stevie Wonder or Elton John were allowed to do their nominated song.
Even the Guitar is unplugged and Mic'd !! Awesome!!! Talent and class boys!!!
I didn't realize Phil Collins was with the band Genesis as far back as 1971 on their 3rd studio album ”Nursery Cryme.”
As many can attest his voice was so recognizable from the 80's onward, as soon as he started to sing, even if it was a simple acoustic or even an a-capella performance.
Saw genesis in concert at the Canadian National Exhibition I the 70s. Did not disappoint!❤❤
I attended in Nov 26/2021 in Toronto. The best show I have ever attended to. And Phil, sat on a stool, in charge of the show as always. But Tony, Mike, Nic (Phil's son), Darryl and the choir did fantastic.
Phil Collins is out of this world! Super Talented !😊😊
Phil sounds like he's sick, normally the high notes were no problem but, with this performance you can hear the congestion and see the sweat.. so he switches to falsetto, which sounds great!!! No lip sync, no pitch correct and as a result you get a unique performance... fantastic.
Probably hungover
Was drinking huge back then
agree
you would be sweating too under hot lights on National TV in front of Carson.
@@fuzzy1237Stupid comment
he did have a problem at 1:49
Letterman once said he hopes that someday Phil Collins will get some airplay lol
Every station all day long was P DC Collins in the 80's!
LOL - yes! That's when Dave was rummaging through that girl's bedroom while she was working and found the "Hello I must be going" album.
Phil from 80 to 91 was at his peak as a singer.
Heard him live 2007 and he still was fantastic. Also 1978. ❤
@@funklover24 Yeah he still sounded good on the 2007 reunion tour - I just mean his peak (IMO) when i think he sounded best.
@@GuaranteedEtern Oops, you're right, 2007. 😉
In fact they transposed down some Songs already, but Phil was brillant.
@@funklover24 They were actually doing that to some songs on the WCD tour - as a singer doing a long set and a whole tour, it's smart to preserve your voice and I didn't really notice it that much. However, I felt on the last Genesis reunion the down-tuning got to the point where it was detrimental.
@@GuaranteedEtern Agree, but still it was Phil's voice. ♥️
Roof is leaking is a perfect song and one of his best- Phil was a brilliant artist both on record and live
I remember Phil and Genesis from the beginning, they were a great band. It's odd to see Julian Lennon in the audience, so young at that time he was 22 now he's 60.
Was that really him?
@@JIF882 Yes, that was Julian.
His latest album is great, some quality tracks.
One of rocks gems. Man I luv this guy. Thanks Phil for all you've given us both solo & Genesis.
The best version of the song I’ve heard. Stripped down like this, his vocals shine. Beautiful voice.
Good old days 😢man how I miss dose days
His voice was live always on point too just an incredible artist. And lets not ignore Daryl Stuermer,
Man's been with phil since the genesis era
One of the best live performers!!
So cool that Clapton sat in. He looks so different.
I miss Johnny so much.
Love Phil Collins. I know he is still with us but I already miss him.
Such great performance. Amazing talent. 🔥👊
Phil Collins was huge in the 80's,both solo and with Genesis.he was a true pop superstar in the 80's.he had so many hits you could never have imagined.

I miss this kinda show..
My favourite song and now favourite version
Amazing live voice!
What a voice and talent. God broke the mold. Thank you God.
He was HUGE!! You couldn't go anywhere without hearing his tunes. Now you just hear noise everywhere you go lolol
There are certain singers that I love, and Phil is one of my favorites. When he starts to sing ,his voice stops me I my tracks❤❤
Brilliance in writing, piano, drums, and vocals! Seeing him in his current state is like watching a super hero on his way out 😢. Thanks to UA-cam,and his music, his memory will live on!
Breaks my heart
We all are headed his way sooner than later 😢

Just think of all the hits this guy had in the 80s. Such a pure talent
Boring bland songs
Carson and Collins at their finest. 🎹🎶🎸🎤
Nothing short of a Legend. Phil is in a category of his own.
The first words out of his mouth demonstrate a talent that should make every current ‘musician’ lock themselves in their bedroom, pull the covers over their head and contemplate the sheer depth their own inadequacies.
Yeah right😅
Wow, this aired on my high-school graduation. Phil was at his peak and stayed on top as a solo artist and with Genesis for several more years.
My graduation was 6-9-85. 🙌🏼
One of my favorite singers.
One of most beautiful love songs ever! Phil Collins is a giant!
Just... wow. Keen reminder of what talent is.
This bloke is rather great looking and very natural in front of the camera. Brand X (and of course Genesis) showcases his magnificent drumming.
Thanks phil for all of your songs and memories
Seriously. What a legend.
