When this video came out it was hard hitting and Phil Collins donated all the profits from this song to homeless charities. At his concerts he would have collection buckets for people to donate, whatever was collected and Phil Collins would match the amount from his own pocket.
Also, just another example of an artist using their platform for humanitarian purposes. This is one of the best songs ever performed by Phil Collins!
Even italian pop group Pooh did this in 2006 for their 40 years career concert in my hometown, but I don't know if that was the case.
He also allowed homeless charities to use the video and song to publicise and highlight their individual fundraising efforts.
My ex and I saw that Carousel Tour in Cleveland in 1989. Almost three hours long without an opening act. What a great show he put on.
I saw Phil on this tour and remember the donation buckets. I was glad to be able to give a little to this very worthy cause!

Just in the first verse alone, Phil Collins painted a scene that many homeless people have described as being invisible. The surgical precision with which he writes in a way that cuts to the heart is vastly underrated.
It seems to me that this is the most harmful part of being homeless, that they are cast out from society and dehumanised by people ignoring that they even exist.
I have never had enough money to regularly donate to charities to help but I think that even if we don’t have anything to give to homeless people it would probably make their day a little better to at least acknowledge them and talk to them when you see them.
I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be ignored by everybody like that.

It’s simple yet it’s beautifully precise and difficult to perfect. Not impossible but Phil makes it sound beautifully easy. His voice is always direct yet smooth and you never question his intentions in a song. I just love him ❤
Its true, I used to spend time talking to various street people here in PDX. Many were very interesting, and it is dehumanizing the way people ignore them just because they find it a hassle . I am also guilty of this, though nowadays i do try and at least say hello. Part of the issue is that there are actually legitimately dangerous and unhinged people on the streets, whether from drugs or mental illness. Sometimes these people will be aggressive even if you simply look their direction. These are also broken and hurting people that need our help, but I don’t blame people for wanting to avoid being accosted, verbally or physically by them. You can’t be sure which ones are good people who are suffering, and those who best avoided. They all need help, im just saying its somewhat understandable. Also, drugs can turn previously wonderful people into very dangerous untrustworthy people, I’ve seen it in my own personal life.
This song always brings a lump to my throat. Reminds me of somebody I knew at school who I found out many years later had been living on the streets and she had died of hypothermia over Christmas 2009.
This man is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Let that sink in for a minute. 🤯🤯

In case nobody knows Phil wrote this song because he is truly a caring man all proceeds from this song went to helping Homeless and every time he performs this song even to this day he passes around donation buckets around the whole concert crowd and whatever is donated he matches it he is a empathetic person
I was homeless once and I never got any money from his donations. Hard to find any help.

The Churches used to help people with this, but then the government decided to take it over....I'm glad you are no longer homeless my friend.

For all of his accolades, talents, skills, etc that have been attributed to Phil Collins over the years, the most underrated skill is his ability to tell a story. One of my all time favorite artists. He not only can emote, but he can make you *feel* the lyrics, not just hear them. A once in a lifetime talent.
I was 8 when this song came out, and it was a gut punch even at that young of an age. Where I live now, we have a community "fridge" which is actually a covered fridge and shelving unit. On the shelves there are labeled tote bins - toiletries, hats & mittens, dried and canned foods, etc. Community members and groups donate food items and necessities (milk, fully assembled meals, fresh fruit & veggies, etc to the fridge & freezer, and dried goods and personal items in the bins), and anyone is welcome to come grab something they're in need of at any time. Does it sometimes get abused? Likely.. but it also legitimately helps. If folks can't donate their stuff, they donate their time to keep the fridge and shelves clean, take out the garbage that accumulates in the bin next to it, etc.
No Son of Mine is another Phil song that will punch you in the feels. So good.

He has a plethora of amazing tracks... I wish it would rain is one of my favourites
I never cry. It seems I pretty much lost that ability when I grew up. But this song does it every time. My chest tightens and I find my self lost in the message. This is one of my favorite songs. And the lyrics hits like a freight train. This has to be Phil Collins's greatest musical achievement. I can listen to this song again and again, and I will never get bored with it.
Compare and contrast with Billy Joel 'we didn't start the fire'. He's preachy, he's beating you over the head with THE MESSAGE.
Whereas here, Phil is inviting you, 'just think about it'. He's not trying to bludgeon you with HIS thinking. He is dramatically undersinging it. To allow you to CHOOSE to be open to it.
My all time favorite song is Under pressure. It has a very powerful message also if you LISTEN to the words carefully (or turn on captions).
For me Against all odds is the most sophisticated song of Phil. And it just shows the incredible musician he is.
This is one of these songs...you can play it 1000 times and never gets old. A masterpiece.

This song always hits deep inside. He kept it simple and subtle yet his plea in his voice is deafening so the message can hit through. Truly brilliant.
In my opinion, he is one of the most dominant artists of the 80's and 90's. His sound, both solo and with Genesis was just always present. Incredibly talented, and not that it matters, but how is he not in the Rock an Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist? May be the largest oversight of that HOF to date, considering some of the "great's" they are enshrining year after year.
I feel the Rock-'n'-roll Hall of Fame has gotten away from what it was intended to be. Rappers have been inducted for instance. There are Halls of Fame that cover multiple genres of music, but the RnR HOF is for RnR. 🤷
My exact same sentiment. If his solo career is not a HOF career I don't know what is. Other artists that had already been inducted with their bands and had much less impactful or significant solo careers were acknowledged for their solo careers. Some even in the last 5 years. And he hasn't even been nominated once. His imprint is all over the 80s. How many other people are Hall of Fame songwriters (as he is, Songwriter's Hall of Fame did not sleep on him), singers, producers and a virtuoso with their instrument?
Speaking as a homeless person myself, I find that watching videos by entertaining content-creators like yourself (whenever I am able to find a free Wi-Fi signal) helps keep my mind thinking more positively without circling back to my situation. So keep up the good work! Coming to videos from this channel is like visiting an old friend who doesn't judge me for the life choices I've made which put me in this situation.
In general, though, we are all just looking for acknowledgement. Yes, we may be looking for spare change for food, not just for a "fix", and that may make your day worse being accosted by us, but don't ignore us, Sometimes it can take a lot of courage to break through one's pride to be able to ask for help in the first place; to have you just ignore us or quickly cross the street away from us can only decrease our feelings of self worth. Just please notice us, because we are not going away any time soon, in fact our numbers are growing daily,
Remember: if you do not belong to the upper 1% who rule the rest of us, there is a good chance that you are only 2 missing paychecks away from joining us!

I find myself watching Elizabeth. This song is in my top ten all-time, so every devastating line appears to have the same reaction for her as it did to me so many years ago. Stunning. When it first came out I’d burst into tears every time I’d hear it. Then 27 yrs later I myself was homeless. New perspective… Elizabeth nails exactly the reasons this recording’s so powerful.
A lot of what Elizabeth relates about the mechanics of singing goes over my head and the way that she chops videos much more than many other "reactors" is at times off putting, but the way she wears her heart on her sleeve is so endearing that I have to keep coming back, especially when the subject is a song or artist I'm invested in.

"I don't care anymore", drips vitriol from every word, " The roof is leaking " is heartbreaking and "Driving the last spike" celebrating those who built the railways through mountains, valleys and died in their thousands doing so, all those will bring you to a different place. Driving the Last Spike has been one of my favourite songs since I was a child. That, No Son of Mine and Dreaming While You Sleep by Genesis all hit like a tonne of bricks and are SO effective at portraying the stories they are trying to tell. Phil's voice is always the absolute icing on the cake. Such talent.

THANK YOU for mentioning The Roof is Leaking. I thought I was the only one who thought that song was one of his masterpieces that never got the recognition it deserved.
When i was pregnant, every time i heard this song it would have me in tears. He's a beautiful musician.
I love Phil's articulation, the words and lyrics are always (especially when English isn't your first languages) easy to follow
He sings like a drummer. Not a lot of drummers are also singers, especially of his caliber. And he just sings right in the pocket like a good drummer would.

Phil Collins is a rare talent in any one of his three skill sets alone, but to have composition, vocal, and percussion abilities all at his extremely high level is simply hard to believe as real. When you experience it, it just strikes awe.

In 2022, he appeared with his band at the O2 Arena in London, at a gig billed as Genesis’s last ever show. Collins appeared on stage in a wheelchair to sing and play tambourine, as he joked that he’d have to get “a real job now”.
He suffered a spinal injury in 2007; he is unable to play drums and walks with a stick or uses a wheelchair. Can't hold the sticks anymore or play the drums.
For a Drummer who sings... that is rough.
His voice in this has a high degree of sincerity and simultaneously an aspect of vulnerability. It is honest, and carries the message beautifully.
This song addresses the consequences of ignoring the needy and homeless. Collins told The Mail on Sunday: "I wrote this after being in Washington DC where I was amazed by how many people I saw living in boxes." Collins told The New York Times how the song came together: "It was begun at the piano. I started playing and put it down on a tape so I wouldn't forget it. Then I decided to see what would happen when I started singing. When I began, the words just came out, 'She calls out to the man on the street.' I didn't set out to write a song about the homeless. Those were just the words I happened to sing. It was only then that I decided that was what the song would be about."
The video to this song conveys the lyrics perfectly. Another song that conveys a similar message is Metal Church - Anthem to the Estranged

I've loved Metal Church since their debut in 1984. I've seen them many times, including a few nights ago. Their new singer, Marc Lopes, is fantastic and reminds me of the David Wayne era (RIP).
I read somewhere that he said the song came about when he noticed that everyone was ignoring the pleas for help from the homeless and that he caught himself doing the same thing and this song was in response to these actions.
Phil is an incredible and iconic talent. His voice is immediately recognizable.

Love Phil Collins. If you want another amazing production song by him I highly suggest I Wish It Would Rain Down. There is a bit of comedy in the bit before and after the video, but the song is amazing, and Phil Collins stretches out his vocal power a bit more.

I think David Crosby is on backing vocals on this one. Crosby co-wrote on the album.
One of Phil's best vocal performances is "Mama." There are several good live videos. His piercing anguish is wonderful. I saw Genesis on this tour, and it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen (and I've seen Pink Floyd and David Bowie). His drum duets with Chester Thompson were amazing. Off the drum, Phil was a very good showman.
I was homeless right after graduation from Highschool. I was lucky enough to have a car to sleep in. The nightly struggle to find a place to park for the night was most remembered. I decided to join the US Air Force and my home was now in the military. After I retired, I never forgot what it is going from place to place looking for a space to stay the night!😢
I love how the drums consistently get more and more intense as the song builds, like giving the song urgency. It wouldn't be a Phil Collins song without the percussion being a standout feature.
Phil was rarely in lists of greatest vocals but for me he always had a voice that’s somehow soothing, comforting, and simply beautiful in its own way.
As an 80’s kid he was one of seemingly countless performers and bands that were absolutely awesome but he always stood out just a bit more than most. I have the same feelings about how Steve Perry’s voice impacted me but he was definitely in everyone’s list of greatest vocalist.

Phil is such an authentic, emotional and relatable singer, so when he executes a dead stop and turns away after "He walks on", he demonstrates so powerfully how a break in empathic connection feels. Suddenly one feels alone and on one's own. And he achieves that gut punch with such small, delicate details!

Phil had so many great songs, solo and with Genesis. The song “Mama” would be fun to see next as he uses his voice so much differently, and the tone of the song it wildly different. It was a huge hit, and used in an episode of Magnum PI that was directed by the star Tom Selleck. Wild times.
Absolutely! Mama is a real monster of a song, such atmosphere. His voice is so pliable and Mama really showcases that.

Every time I feel tired with life or burdened with my problems, I put this song and it shines a light on how trivial some of my problems are. I have a house. Things could have been much much worse. Think about it and be grateful for the things you have (achieved) in life. The ending of this song always brings tears in my eyes.
My father was one of those guys who would drive around the city and give out blankets and food and rides to shelters to homeless people. We were working class (he was a janitor at a public school) and he would even give a little money when he could. I never knew until I was older. He was not perfect, but he was a good man.
As a woman, I'm uncomfortable giving rides, but I do try to buy food or some bottles of water, etc. to pass to people. But I will never compare to him. Miss him everyday.
A song from his "Tarzan" soundtrack would be awesome. "You'll Be in My Heart" is amazing.

Only just got into your channel so I don’t know how into percussion you are, but all the drumming he did through the 70’s and 80’s with Genesis is genuinely phenomenal. His poppier stuff is a bit of a meme (even though a lot of it is great) but he is an INCREDIBLE drummer, despite In the Air Tonight being his most known fill. Yep he was drumming in a band called Brand X too - jazz fusion. Had to give that up when Genesis got too busy I think.

Phil had an amazing career: appearing as a child extra in "Hard Days Night"; enjoying his role as the anonymous drummer behind flamboyant Peter Gabriel in Genesis; being shoved into the spotlight by his bandmates after Peter's departure; enduring harsh criticism for exploring new musical directions; becoming a rock superstar who was half adored/half derided; and then falling victim to all sorts of ailments that have left him unable to play. Two Phil Collins musts are “Against all odds” and “Wish it would rain down”. The first is among the most emotional love songs ever…..soooo powerful to hear the longing and desperation in his voice. The second is just a powerful ballad with the extra bonus of Eric Clapton playing guitar. In that one, it’s really Clapton’s guitar that provides the emotion. Both are best by playing the videos.
Against All Odds breaks me every time. The emotion in his voice 😭
Against All Odds has some of the most bizarre chord changes ever in a pop song, but somehow Phil Collins just makes it work. It's a really unique song.

I remember how powerful this song was when it came out. I was just a child, but I loved his work even then. Little did I know I would face homelessness several times in my own life, and have to face that invisibility. I am grateful to be on the other side of that; to have learned those lessons and to strive to be of service when I can. To appreciate the paradise that I now live in
Phil Collins was well known for using gated reverb in his percussion techniques. You will discover that he used this effect in many of his songs, to varying degrees.

The main drum groove is Phil’s trusty TR-808 drum machine. Use of a drum machine & the gates on the sound was considered a bit odd for a live drummer, but it didn’t cheapen the sound like the dance tracks of the 80’s 90’s, he instead used it to richen the sound. There’s a mix of 808 & live drums throughout. Freaking genius.
Bit more than well known for using, it was when he was working with Hugh Padgham on Peter Gabriel's 1980 Album they discovered this sound effect that defines so much of 80's pop music
I grew up listening to Phil Collins and Genesis, as he was one of my Mom and Dad's favorite singers. I was 8 when this song came out, and we were living in Baltimore at the time. We used to travel into DC fairly regularly, once a month at minimum, to go to the National Zoo, or the Smithsonian Museums, or whatever. I remember being shocked at how many homeless people there were right in our nation's capitol, and it made me cry. Especially when I'd see parents with children... I saw so many kids that looked to be my age, or my little brothers age, and it broke my heart that I had a warm home to go back to, and they didn't. Watching your reaction to this video today transported me back 34 years, to when I was that little girl who wore her heart on her sleeve. This song STILL breaks my heart, and makes me tear up. Phil is an absolute legend for the simple reason that he makes you FEEL the lyrics. This is why I still love him to this day! ❤
I usually do not chime in but this song rings personal to me. I was a homeless veteran when this song was on the airwaves. There are many reasons people become homeless. Not all homeless people are drug addicts. Some of us are suffering from other issues economic, mental health, trust issues, or histories that we are running from. Many homeless people beg for money because they do not know about available resources or the apathy presented by society to the problem. Many will not turn to shelters because of the necessity to listen to a sermon or be 'prayed over'. Many do not believe that there is the possibility that god even cares for them. They feel like people who work at these places are just doing this to feel good about themselves. Much like how people only think about veterans on Veterans day or Memorial day, they only think of homeless people on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Veterans are veterans for the rest of their lives. We bear the scares forever, not just twice a year. Those who are homeless are homeless more than twice a year, they need help everyday. We live in a country that sends billions to other countries to lift their citizens out of poverty but our own government refuses to take some of that tax money to help the homeless or homeless veterans. I do not want to get political but how is it right that people who di not cross the border appropriately are housed in hotels while homeless veterans can't even lay on a bus bench because some city councilman decided to make it impossible.
I am no longer homeless thanks to a kind individual many years ago who took a chance on me and gave me a place to live until i could get on my feet. Veterans, If you read this, please, if you find a homeless veteran please take them or point them to the nearest VA hospital so they can get assistance instead of ending up like I almost did, I think you know what I mean. Till Valhalla my Brothers and Sisters in Arms.
I grew up in NYC. There were/are so many homeless people begging for money/food that it does indeed become white noise. I rode the bus and train by myself every day since I was 14 (high school through masters degree).
I just learned that you can't help everybody. You can give a dollar if its in your pocket. But just know they may use that dollar for food or for drugs, so you may be helping or hurting.
NYC is a tough place, and this song reminds me of those bus and train rides.
This is the first time i have really listened to this song. I only recently found you here and I appreciate your input on his music. Wonderful and uplifting
We are heading into fall here in Western Cape. South Africa....Phil Collins has always put bindings on our hearts. I was doing some rumbling around on the interweb...His health has deteriorated, to the point no longer sings or plays. I can not imagine..His eyes are sharp... But having all the music still inside if him..and not being able to set it free.
I remembered your reaction's and came back to revisit them.

I must admit, when this song first came out in 1989, I didn't really listen to the verse lyrics enough to "get" the story. When I was on the verge of homelessness myself and heard it again... BAM! Total gut punch, as you said. The photos really add to that. And that's even before we get to the absolute beauty of this song!
I loved your reaction and analysis of this, Elizabeth. It's a wonderful song and after being homeless myself just before its release it always spoke volumes to me, as does the song, 'Streets of London' by Ralph McTell (another beautifully moving song), I was living in London at the time of my homelessness. Other Phil Collins tracks which I recommend are:
'Against All Odds',
'Easy Lover' a duet with Philip Bailey of 'Earth, Wind and Fire'. There are many great tracks from him but these are good ones to continue with.
I live in the UK. The Home Secretary of the UK (one of the most powerful positions in the UK government), Suella Braverman, wants to bring in new legislation to ban charities from giving tents to homeless people in cold weather. I don't need to say any more, do I? I'm a Buddhist and I do care. I tried to make a difference especially when I was working in Manchester and walking past suffering people. I couldn't do much but I could buy food. This song makes me cry every time I hear it 😢 It is by far my most favourite Phil Collins track (solo career, not in Genesis) - just a fabulous track. @@brianswift2706 Indeed (or not in terms of a choice as the case may be). It doesn't matter what your political persuasions are, denying homeless people tents is a whole new level or universe of cruelty. If this law goes through, UK homeless people will die this winter. Who knows what Phil Collins is thinking (although he has enough of his own health problems at the moment).

A very beautiful song and im so glad you got to experience it. One thing that always pops in my mind is how haunting the backing vocals are in the chorus.
If you want to hear another dimension of Phil's voice, you should check out some of his work with Genesis! I'll recommend both Land of Confusion, and Mama. Mama brings out some of his more aggressive tones, and both of these have him wailing. Glad to hear how much you like him solo. He's had such an incredibly and lengthy career.
Oh my gosh yes!!! Mama and Home by the Sea are two of all time favorites.

David Crosby's backing vocals give this song an extra dash of texture, but Phil's lead vocals are as evocative as it can get. Another song from that same "But Seriously..." album will give you another gut punch, "That's the Way It Is." Again, Crosby does an amazing job of harmonizing with Phil's subtle vocalizing.
I believe Phil never got enough credit for his work. From his drumming for Genisis, taking over the lead vocals whilst still drumming, movie srar in Buster to solo artist. Some of my favourites would have to be Rain Down On Me, Against All Odds and Genisis songs like Follow You Follow Me and a total opposite to this song in style and voice, Mamma. Truly amazing talent. ❤

I'm so glad to find your channel Elizabeth - I had the privilege of backlighting Phill Collins on the 'Jonathon Ross Friday Night Live Show' in London early 90's - Ewart Television studios. There was always a buffet afterwards and we got chance to meet and mingle with the performers. This guy was is an awesome bloke!... kind, fun, polite, totally grounded and an absolute music icon!

You gotta hear "Against All Odds"... only the studio version (critical.) It is Phil's best vocals without question. And it is an amazing, passionate song.
The studio version is my favourite. The live versions are okay, but the pain he puts into his voice in the last verse and chorus is palpable.
It has a very dated sound, but I'd pick I Wish It Would Rain Down. The way he's absolutely belting out from the bridge on out is emotionally jarring.
Genesis Home by the Sea has to be the most impassioned I've heard Phil sing. Incredible song with an incredible vocal performance.

I’ve always loved Phil Collins. He’s never looked the part of a rock singer, but he was fantastic.
Hes such a great writer, drummer, singer, producer. He does a majority of the work on these song's. This song definitely hits me in the feels. I can remember when this came out.
Phil's got it all: Huge vocal chops, emotion, vocal range, excels in multiple genres, and NOBODY does the 'gut punch' better! Best 'gut punch' examples for me are Turn It On Again, Missed Again, Misunderstanding, and Thats All but there are many more.
I’ve been homeless and not, I find that each story is different and even being there my heart broke to see anyone hungry, hurt, or tired. Education on how to rent and the laws surrounding that, mental health, abuse, addiction, all kinds of people all kinds of reasons. Also there are NO domestic violence shelters for men with children let alone single men! Most shelters don’t accept boys over twelve!!! We stayed in our car because we were rare and lucky to at least have that. I love this song! Always have. I’ve changed a lot and learned soo soo much during this journey am looking into becoming an advocate of some kind I’d really LOVE to become part of a solution bringing my own unique and not so unique experiences to the table. Anyway I have mad respect for you Elizabeth truly the definition of beautiful human being! Just get you CARE! I adore what you’re doing!
Moving from the "She" and "He" articles, and over to the "You" half way through is just one of those really subtle touches that i absolutely live about this song. Might just be a silly observation but ive always liked that part.

I've thankfully only been homeless for 48 hours in my entire life.
In another country. Without anyone to call on for help. Without family. Friends gone. Work gone. Apartment gone. No money.
With no possible way to save myself. It was the most difficult 48 hours of my life, not physically, but mentally.
And that was just 48 hours, of becoming completely "outside" society in an instant. I can't imagine 48 months, or 8 years.
That is the only time in my life that caused me some motivation to "become rich".
Of course in part to secure myself against it happening again.
But mostly because, with wealth, comes the means to be able to help others get out of that situation.
Today, i can't do that yet. I can't help anyone in that situation.
I could buy them a meal for 1 day. But it won't help them tomorrow, or the next year.
I can't buy them a house, nor even a hotel for a week.
I can't get them a job. I dont have enough yet.
But hopefully one day, i will have enough means, to help.
The way you described the tone of your voice…no wonder Disney basically chose Phil Collins to be the backing vocals to our childhoods

I've always loved this song. As I've gotten older I seem to have been able to connect to the emotional aspects of songs a lot easyer. Lot more tears well up to old favorites.
It's because this song jas been out for GENERATIONS. He told us the message. And for some reason, we have spent every DECADE since judging the splinter in others eyes whilst ignoring the beam in our own. Focusing on people in countries that hate us instead of taking care of our own people. Until now almost every major city is failed or failing.
Someone needs to do an angrier version that phil's warning was ignored, like disturbed did with 'the sound of silence'.

I watched and listened Phil Collins twice. On his Fare Well Tour in Düsseldorf 2007 and 2016 sitting in a chair in Cologne. The second time he couldn't be drumming any more. But his son did it. Unforgettable moments ❤
You said you wanted to hear what we got to say about what could be done to help. I love Phil Collins, he was always one of my favorites. But got my inspiration actually from a different artist, Bono from U2. When he started the “ONE campaign” which fights against poverty, he said in a speech at a concert that everyone can do something to make this world a little better,even if you don’t have money to give. Just open your eyes and mind and pay attention. Sometimes already a friendly word, a smile or a minute of your time can change a person’s day. He inspired me to cut hair for the homeless. I volunteer since 2014 and it’s such a rewarding thing for me to do. I met so many great and interesting people over the years and I’m saddened about how little compassion our society shows nowadays towards the needy. Our government needs to step up and stop putting money in the wrong places. There are way to many veterans, handicapped, mentally ill , elderly or disabled on the streets, this is simply unacceptable. 😢

The musical 🎼 Genius of Phil Collins cannot be overstated, from Lyrics, musical composition, voice and INCREDIBLE drum playing. Few people know he had over 3 number one hits BEFORE he even started Genesis, musical lyric's and compositions he wrote for MANY other famous artists. Thank you so much for an excellent reaction/analysis of one of the all time Greats in the industry.
Phil Collins joined Genesis in 1971, a couple years after Genesis was created. Before that he was in a group called Flaming Youth and they did not have hits.. What hits do you mean? But, Yes, Phil is a musical genius!

There is something really amazing in the subtlety with which the buildup of the song and the expression in Phil Collins' singing goes - from this small, sad, introspective feeling to a more frustrated, almost angry, activating feel. You can almost not hear an actual difference in his singing but you still *feel* his emotions shift from sad to angry and that's just mind-blowing to me. Amazing song and great analysis, thank you 🙏🏻

Phil Collins was the voice for the 80's. The kids don't realize how many hits he had.
Just a genuine man with in my opinion one of the most unique and not easy to imitate vocals out there. He is big on getting that message out there if whatever he is singing on in a calm yet powerful hit of emotion to really feel it. I had always wanted to see him in concert as i love him and this is actually my favorite song. I know his health has gotten bad and he may never perform so I'm sad at knowing that but I hope he gets better and enjoys his time and we as lovers of music with message and everything, can love and appreciate all the amazing things he has done to help others and basically get everyone to as he says in this song but it's really for many of his songs "just think about it". Masterpiece
He's such a great song writer. The cassette 'No Jacket Required' played on a loop in my Ford Escort Mk2 for quite some time. Then the car stereo ate the tape....I hooked it out......then spooled it back using an HB pencil. If this sounds familiar....then you too grew up in the 80's. 😉
