that's one hundred percent right down the middle. When I listen to this song I get so sad and emotional that it hurts so bad and I just wan't to run away but at the same time it's comforting to be able to feel the tears running down my chin. Praise David Draiman for this version, in the end it's really healing to be able to feel so much.

The first time I heard Disturbed sing this I cried but I went straight back and listened again and just carried on crying. My take first was it was the lyrics that were making me cry; Needless to say, the second time I listened I realised it was the delivery of this song and the emotions that were evoked that were the real clincher. Disturbed and their rendition of this classic made me realise I truly hadn't listened to the lyrics ever

If the version by Disturbed doesn't stir emotions in you, you're not human. You have nothing to apologize for. The crazy thing is that I can't speak as well as that Man can sing. He's a true Master of his craft.

I have been listening to this song since I was a young teenager, but I never paid deep attention to the lyrics, until recently when I heard Hank sing it. Then I read the whole lyrics, thought about it and got a deep meaning from the lyrics.
I read somewhere the comment that Christian Fuchs repeated here:
"Simn&Garfunkel was the warning, Disturbed is the wake-up call.!
      Totally agree with that.
The lyrics talk about the "silence" that exists everywhere even when people are talking.
99% of the time it is just small talk, irrelevant, without any depth.
The "silence" that Paul saw back in the '60s has grown like cancer. Today the empty words, the communication without meaning and depth is pervasive. The song was meaningful then and much more so nowadays, with everyone texting empty words and the real interaction among humans is silenced.
Disturbed version IMO is powerful as a very loud wake-up call, it is impressive, I have been looping it for weeks and "feeling" the message.
We. as a species, have degraded our communication with our fellow travelers to a mediocre, meaningless, superficial small talk and the real possibility of interaction among us humans is silenced.
I will suggest one among many forms of understanding this, in a very practical way:
Try this with some close friends:
Chose a night when nobody has to work the next day, like Saturday night.
Sit around a table and play THIS game:
Start chatting following 3 simple rules.
1- No "I", "we" is allowed, no words like "my", "mine", "our, etc. You can't say any verb in the 1st person, singular or plural.
2- No verb can be used in the negative form, you're not allowed to say "no", "never", etc.
3- No names allowed, you can't refer to anybody personally, names or reference to a title or position that identifies the person, like "the president", "my dad", every reference to people has to be impersonal.
Talk slow, it's not a competition against others, it is a competition against oneself, the "deep" you against the "shallow" you.
Try to talk with your friends in this manner. To make it more fun, you can put some bean seeds in the middle of the table and anytime someone makes a "mistake" breaking the rules he is " punished" with a bean.
The conversation will get slower, everyone will have to be mindful of how he/she talks.
Evidently, the result will be something far above the everyday small talk, everyone will understand how difficult it is.
The point of this kind of conversation with 3 rules is to get 3 things out of the conversation; The ego, the negativity, and the gossip.
This "game" will result in meaningful conversations. The everyday conversation we have are for the most part meaningless... the "meaning" is being "silenced", suppressed.
PS. I don't know how to write very short texts, I don't use Tweeter, I don't message anyone on Facebook, which is a place for me to read texts from the several groups I subscribed to.

I understand. And I think that they Actually work better Together in context.
The original is a soft melancholic call for people to wake up and see the dangers that the media industry posed in blinding us to the violence, cruelty, and self destructive actions that our populace is going through and causing. Meanwhile the Disturbed version is like an angry retelling. Like the one asking the question again Decades later is more desperate and angry that people are still ignoring the message and sinking further into isolation and self destructive behaviors.

I feel that listening to the Simon and Garfunkel original, that it has this ethereal, detached, haunting quality that is a disturbing feeling. The emotion of the song vs the lyrical content are almost at deliberate odds with one another. And this is a good thing. It was designed to stop you, make you think and really look at it. Then Disturbed's cover comes along. This has the raw, slightly angry, very powerful and still equally haunting feel. It tapped into the emotions of the lyrics and made them real. In this version, the emotion and the lyrical content are in sync. And it just touches something deep inside me. I feel that i prefer Disturbed's version, but you cannot deny the classic nature of the original. (And shout out to Henk Poorts version, as it was amazing as well). Thank you HLS for putting out another compelling and touching reaction video. Love walking this musical journey with you!

Not coming from me, but I saw someone else describe these two versions as:
Simon and Garfunkel: A warning for the people, that if we keep going in the same direction we're heading for our own destruction.
Disturbed: Anger at the people not having listened to the original's message.

Disturbed remake (not cover) is a perfect update to the original version (acoustic and not album version). Disturbed’s version is the perfect example of an emotional buildup that pushes you right to the edge, then off of the cliff, into the abyss of your soul. His voice brings the emotion of the lyrics to a new life.

  • @BuckFlicks

I've heard the two versions described... The S&G version is a warning that we need to listen to each other and treat each other better, while the disturbed version is rage that we didn't heed the original warning.
How prophetic was Simon? "The neon God they made" could be any technology, but seems like it's talking specifically about our phones and mobile devices, and that we pay more attention to those than we do each other.
Paul Simon wrote one of the world's greatest melodies and some powerful lyrics in this song, but it didn't realize it's true potential until Disturbed got their hands on it. I love the original, but Disturbed's version is astronomically better.

Loved your reaction to both versions of the song. I'm old enough to remember listening to the original on the radio. I was moved by the lyrics even though I was only about 8 or 9. I feel it's always been a powerful, powerful song. I have the same reaction as you when I listen to Disturbed's version. In fact, I cry every time I hear it. I've listened to it and watched the video many times. The vocal interpretation of the song is so powerful that it is easy to completely overlook the video. Your reaction touched me and I hope you won't mind if I share some of my thoughts with you.
I thought it was interesting that David's eyes open on the word "vision." The guitar is pulled from the ground in connection with the lyric "planted." In the video, there are two groups of people separated from each other. In both groups the people are usually looking down. One group has access to the instruments or tools. I noticed that the tools were not built from scratch. They already existed. They must have been lost and had to be recovered, as well as refurbished or repaired. The other group possessed something less tangible -- inspiration or imagination along with the ability to put their (music) ideas to paper so they could be shared. Instruments are useless without music. Music cannot be played without instruments. The same can be said for tools and/or ideas. Great ideas can't be implemented without people who possess the tools to do the work of physical creation. Someone looked up and noticed they possessed what the other group needed -- or the other group had what they needed to make whatever they possessed - the instrument or tool or knowledge or inspiration - viable. At the end of the video they show one group bridging the gap between them. I notice more about the video each I watch and think about it. I'm sure others noticed things I have missed.
The song is a masterpiece and timeless. I can't think of any time that isn't a good time to be reminded or remind ourselves to look up and look around. When we do we may discover we still need each other. Thank you so much for your reaction. Have a great one!

When Paul Simon added Disturbed’s version to his track after contacting him, complimenting his version stating that it’s exactly as he envisioned it to be, that’s HUGE! That’s NOT an everyday occurrence.
David actually cried when he listened to their completed performance, it was beautiful.
It is beautiful it’s beyond adjectives by way of an adequate explanation to define what we feel inside our utter heart and soul.
I listen to this song over and over and over…I never get tired of hearing it.
This WILL be played at my funeral the DISTURBED version that is.
Draimen’s voice is once in a lifetime his vocal range and ability to hear his words no matter if he’s DOWM WITH THE SICKNESS or SOS.
His talent and ability to make every sound in every form so effortlessly is well an EXPERIENCE you’ll never forget.

Sistah - I hear you regarding the oppression of silence. That when my negative self-talk begins, in the time between turning the TV off and hauling myself into bed and turning off the light any time between 1 - 1.45am. It takes this old body longer to get ready for bed, and by that time I'll have beaten myself up enough to be tired enough to sleep. It's one reason why I keep my TV on through the day. It blocks out Him, the self-critical part of me that keeps dragging me down to his level.

I love watching people react to this version of Sound of Silence. "People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening" Cell phones, computers, tablets, etc ---- Texting/social media , Tweeting/facebook ... people are so caught up in their own world that they don't see the world around them.
NOTICE the boat/ark of musicians at the end crossing the river to the people on shore with sheet music. They need each other to end the silence with music. Music is the universal language as BTS is proving now while singing and writing songs in Korean and a world wide audience listening. Opera goers have know this for decades. You don't have to understand the words to appreciate good music.

Simon and Garfunkel's version is the warning of what is to come. To try and deter it. Disturbed's version is the anger, and the sadness, that comes from ignoring the warning of the original. That's how I see them.

Together that made a beautiful masterpiece. I’m over 50 and have been listening to Disturbed for many years. Their songs always manipulate different emotions in me. Sometimes I need a fight song. If that makes sense. It keeps me from going back down those dark and hurtful memories so I can find strength to push forward.

I love this song because of how the band takes the powerful expressiveness of Metal and uses it to perfectly honor the heart of the original while using the power of classical music to enrich the experience. And David's voice... I just don't have words.

David, while recording this song had to be constantly checked on by his bandmates because of how much emotion was imbibed in it. We all feel it.

I have watched the Disturbed video more than any other to see the reactions-yours is
--more clearly than the argument over the two versions-the best.
I appreciate and admire your openness and courage to put yourself out there and was moved greatly by your response to what's always been one of my top five songs-a list which has now altered for the first time in a generation,as in agreement with you, I have to give the edge to this inspired and definitively atmospheric cover. The sort of music that goes straight to the soul.Ive been alone and in silence most of my life-never think-or let people make you think-that you're not inherently valuable.

As a NDE experiencer this video gave me chills. In my NDE I experienced walking into a tree grove like this as well as saw "others" in a lower meadow. Then like in this video the people appearing out of the mist I had same thing but light beings surrounding me. If you take another watch thru the conciousness eyes this video and its song open up so much more

You are the first person to compare them both! Your reaction is so pure and so beautiful, I feel like I just want to hold you in my arms. I feel the same way when I hear this song. For four decades this was Simon and Garfunkel's magnum opus. Then Disturbed came along and totally owned it forever! They accentuate the way each (false) crescendo is obliterated by the next crescendo. It intensifies the emotional impact of each subsequent verse. David's emphasis on the line "the neon "god" THEY MADE" really did it for me. That was a beautiful and moving reaction video!

Thank you for playing both versions...Since I was very young when the version by Simon and Garfunkel came out, and now I am much older and have heard both versions...this is how I see it...Simon and Garfunkel were gently warning of the censoring of The People, and the Disturbed version is saying, "Its here!!! wake up, we are being censored and we can't stay quiet any longer!!!" .

I've just spent almost 15 hours watching people's posts of hearing this version of the song for the first time. And, I can tell you, you are in good company! People are arguing which version is BEST. THEY BOTH ARE. They're TWO different sides of the same coin. One side...is tells us what happened, in an accepting manner and the OTHER side tells us what happened but they do NOT accept what happened. Depending on your MOOD you can choose WHICH version you want to hear. I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel and was resistant to listen to the Disturbed version....but once I did....I liked it!

I was so waiting for this reaction here. I can take the song and view it in many meaning. From what some say is like a representation of the world today and technology (even though when this song was made the technology was not around really) to dreamers thinking and making such beautiful designs and with the hopes of riches and fame but never being able to share them. But the music video of Disturbed version I think adds another layer that you can think of. Imagine all the beautiful songs that were written in peoples minds just to be lost and never heard. I can always listen to Disturbed version over and over again and can see it in a different view.

After 55 years of listening to the original, this version by Disturbed is what hits home the most. I was 14 when the original came out and really did not understand the power of what Paul Simon was saying. As the years pasted, the words meant more and more. But this version is so powerful and hits so hard at how we have abandoned what is good. "People talking with speaking, People hearing without listening. Wow prophetic words from so long ago. Oh the times they are a changing!!!!!

This song was written more than 55 years ago, but it has not been more important than it is today, with the silence of the masses, like a cancer grow, in favour of hate, rasism, fasism, greed and rightwing and religious violence, and eviromental issues. Becourse just like in the 1930`s europe, it is the silence of the masses that let the oppression , the hate and the fear grow. it is that this song means to me, a wakeup call to fight all oppression to save humanity and to save this planet for future generations. ps: I have difficulties to sleep when it is quiet too. it is a symptom of PTSD, for you the childhood and the abuse created your PTSD for me it was feeling diffrent of undiagnosed Autism/ Aspergers syndrome/Tourettes, didnt get my AS/TS diagnosis untill i was a grown up man in 2007.Ds

This is the best reaction video I've seen because it gives us the direct contrast between the original(which I grew up with and love) and what Disturbed did with it. I was blown away when I heard Disturbed's version. It is the best cover of any song I've ever heard! Powerful, David's voice is incredible and the arrangement is beautiful. Frankly I didn't pay attention to the lyrics in the original but this version makes me understand what Simon was trying to say! Thank you for showing us the contrast!

This song has different meanings for different people BUT the only common feeling most people feel is Distrub and David's voice touches the deep seated soul of emotion. I've seen grown men break down in tears when they hear this ... including me. If you've ever had a sad or emotional experience in life, David brings it out. A truly holy voice. There's a few of Disturbed songs that should come with a public health warning for this type of reaction.

Sistah, you reaction moved me deeply. I think that, in that dark silence , it's human nature to feel self doubt. It's not good for us, but we do it anyway. I do it every single day, telling myself that I'm not good enough, I'm a bad father, a bad husband, I can't do anything right. Intellectually, I know that it's counter-productive, but I can't help myself. I'm so accustomed to failure and rejection that I don't know any better.
It's midnight, and I'm rambling. Thank you for sharing your feelings, dear lady. Much love!

That’s ok love. I was very emotional too when I heard it. Wow. Just wow. He really put passion into the words of the song. And it meant something to me as well. We can interpret the words to our own meaning in our lives. It IS like that sometimes where people talk and say nothing. They listen but the just don’t hear you. Or each other. It hit me. I’ve heard the original so many times without really hearing the meaning behind them.

Paul Simon wrote this song in his bathroom with a lit candle, in the darkness, while his parents watched TV. He felt disconnected, alone, and isolated. But yet, he knew a solution. Communication with speaking and listening, making contact/a connection.
