@@trentrez6643 Not sure what your problem is. Both versions of the song are great. The way the songs are arranged also allow them to emphasize different emotions through the same words. Distrubed's version takes absolutely nothing away from the original, nor was it meant to. My comment was, again, simply that I think it would be nice for the members of Disturbed to be aware that their music was appreciated by a group of people from a vastly different culture, literally on the other side of the world, but it was still enjoyed and appreciated. If I was a musician (I most certainly am not), I think that would be something I would like to know.

My heart broke a little when Muharam said he felt like dancing and you interrupted him and told him it wasn't that kind of song. If ANY song makes you feel like dancing, hold onto that joy, regardless of what other people say. Muharam knowns how he felt, it touched him inside, he said it tied his heart up in knots, but that he felt hope. His opinions are just as valid as anyones!
Not all dancing is frenetic or even joyous. Much Modern dance can portray grief, loss, fear and hope.

"Having conversation for a human is just like the tune up for a vehicle. It helps the parts and filters get clean. It does the same for a person. These little talks clean our mind". I love the way this mans mind deconstructs things. He always ends up cutting right to the heart of the matter.
I had to call my son over to hear just that part. That was like a message to my heart!
That particular line resonated so much with me. It's almost verbatim something my therapist has often told me - she literally calls it "attuning" my mind. I struggle with anxiety and tend to overthink, and sometimes I can get lost in the negative narratives of my own mind if I spend too much time alone; that's when I need to get out of my own head and speak with other people to ground myself again, to help me realize that many of my anxious brain's fears and worries are out of proportion and often have little to no basis in reality.

MY POINT WAS: other countries who don’t speak english are more than happy to listen to english songs, even when they don’t speak it; yet when someone who is introduced to music that’s not in english, ESPECIALLY KOREAN MUSIC NOWADAYS since it IS huge, they dismiss it because it’s just “silly frufru shit” or “Damn, wish I could know what they’re saying”, or “How can someone listen to this and enjoy it without knowing what the words are lol” when the translations are literally,,,,,, right there.

Also, the older gentleman I the pale blue shirt and glasses - bless his gentle soul. He just sat there, so intently focusing and enjoying the whole thing. You could see he was THERE for the song.
They are all so amazing, and it's easy to enjoy things WITH them.

The elderly people is really filled with such knowledge that even with the kind of technology we have today not once did I hear this words, to me this is such an enlightenment... (I'm not a church goer but boy this makes me want to just want sit with my mom in silence.)

This song was written during the Vietnam war. A wonderful protest song. I usually don't go for cover songs, but this one was truly exceptional. I enjoyed listening to these amazing people. They got it!

I don't usually like cover songs myself and have only enjoyed a handful. Disturbed does a cover on every album and they are ALWAYS amazing. Sometimes better than the original, like with Sound of Silence. The only other one that's better (or tied) Metallica's cover of Turn the Page, which is a Bob Seger song that he only does live.
There is a guy who does a boat load of heavy metal covers on UA-cam and that's Leap Frog Studios. He's amazing. But do check out Disturbed's other covers. Land of Confusion is a good one.
The man in the light blue shirt is precious. Not only does he get the lyrics, he appreciates David's incredible voice. I loved this!

Abduls reaction to the lyric "Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" is unreal. He responds with "Life begins in darkness, in a mothers womb." For some reason that literally sent chills down my spine when he said that man, absolutely amazing. He sees life, light, and dark in such a unique way it seems. He must be a fascinating person to talk to.
I felt the same when he spoke those words. The immediate insight he displays, the thoughtful recognition of human truth is such that I want to hear more from him.

To be fair, he truly has a beautiful voice.

The man's reaction in light blue shirt is so pure and filled with awe, it's amazing how feelings and understanding can transcend language. They all get it now, but that man felt it.

This is amazing. This is EXACTLY what made Simon + Garfunkel's music so timeless, and Disturbed's cover so impactful. The combination of a brilliant lyric with many layers of meaning that is intensely human, with such a powerful presentation which is in truly distinct opposition to the original recording, it's a masterpiece that transcends culture and language. It's a difficult thing to translate in words but it's so clear that each of these folks did understand in their own way and felt meaning in it.
Unless your from that era. I know exactly what the lyrics mean and it was written, it was way before its time.

@@sallymcmurray949 I was a preteen in that era and yes, much was going on in the world that sparked the lyrics (see my post). However, I was wonderful hearing it explained and then their interpretations. After doing so the song has even greater meaning for me.

The man in the light blue/silver was absolutely correct when he said that you want to dance to it, but at the same time, it wrenches your heart. I find this song is beautiful, and dark, but not without hope. Even feeling alone, you can find people in the same space as yourself. Even when no one is speaking, you share an idea. There is always light to move towards if you just look.
This is personally one of my favorite songs. I enjoy it even more now, having heard their take on it. Thank you.
First, I want to say what a great job you did translating the lyrics. English is a difficult language in itself--but to translate poetry? And into a language that is only loosely-related? You folks are truly scholars, and you should receive the honor you deserve for that!
Secondly, I am awestruck at the level of insight the participants interpreted the lyrics with. They have a lot of life experience, and they know how to apply it--even to music written half a century and half a world away. Humanity at it's finest.
I do want to touch on an idea a few of them engaged with: there is a tension in this song about what exactly silence is. It is good to take moments of silence and darkness, but silence is also ignorance and death. I really feel that tension in the nature of silence was intentionally written in there--and I can see it playing out in the the discussions.

In my 20 years of traveling this world as a U.S Marine, the most beautiful thing I got to see was how music touches everyone. This was absolutely beautiful to see everyone's reactions and to hear their thoughts. I loved seeing the emotion and contemplation on everyone's face here. I felt blessed by listening to their wisdom. I wish everyone who participated in this all the best in life. Thank you for reminding me that we are all family.

My daughter did a breakdown of the meaning of this song and I was fascinated by what she saw in it as an 18 year old as opposed to what I saw at 46. I have loved the original my whole life, and when Disturbed covered it I loved it just as much. Both versions were appropriate for the time they were recorded, and it amazes me how it is still so relevant.
I find it funny how different generations of people think they are so different. I thought the same when i was younger.
At the end of the day we are all the same. For all our differences we are the same.
We make the same mistakes, repeat the mistakes of the past. We long for the same things and try to find the same meaning in our existence.

That's amazing. When he got to the part where his rough vocals came in, none of them batted a single eye. They just took it for the message it was. No judgment, and they even found it kinda cool and wanted to hear his original tracks.

No matter how many times I see reactions to Disturbed's "Sound of Silence", I always get goosebumps. It's amazing how the song starts out quietly and keeps building until you are blown away by the ending. It really is quite an experience.

AGREED amazing Song, Lyric and Cover version (for it's uniqueness and opposing style to the original!) VERY POWERFUL! When I first heard this I was listening to it non stop for about a month it REALLY touched me deeply both the meaning and his delivery! (The original never did that I had heard it, but I guess because of the style it passed over me at the time plus I was young at the time) now I like both versions but for me this sounds like an original due to the power of the delivery adding weight to the genius & deep lyrics.. kind of reinforcing the importance of them and the song in my opinion anyway.. 👍🏴

It's not that it's really silence. There's noise...there's words... but they mean nothing. Nobody is actually "communicating"... connecting with each other. It's the silence of real personal connection.

@@pitbull1026 you have to realize.. none of that was around when Paul Simon originally wrote the song. Disturbed and David realized it’s gotten even worse and wanted to push the message again. I believe there are a few videos of him explaining why they choose this song on UA-cam if you want to hear his thoughts!
I think it is the opposite. Silence is louder than noise. Think about how unnatural it is to be able to hear a pin drop and the discomfort that goes along with that, that is the sound of silence. It is heavy. I always felt like this song was about standing up for what you thought was right. "People writing songs that voices never shared, no one dared, disturb the sound of silence". People thinking about what is right to them but not being able to stand up for it. That is just my interpretation though, of course.

Their interpretations is the reasons why music and art are very important. I think that Disturbed would be humbled by knowing they touched others in different countries.
This video touched my very soul. "The Sound of Silence" has been one of my favorite songs my entire life. I know what it means to me, but to hear people from a culture very different from my own express their appreciation and interpretation of this song has helped me to see it in a new light, through new eyes. The man translating the video for them does such a good job. He makes them all understand the underlying meaning of the song, it’s really incredible. Great video!
Learning that Paul Simon was a genius is an excellent thing to take away from hearing this, haha. He was truly a poet. I have shivers listening to this song, regardless of whether it's the original or this cover, even with it broken up for translations, it is so impactful, and speaks to us as humans. This is one of my favorite covers of the song because you can tell how strongly David Draiman can communicate the emotions behind it. So many other covers, in my opinion, have fallen short.
I heard but can't confirm that both Simon and Garfunkel said they prefer this version of the song to their own. I like both but they do convey a different mood for which you prefer at any given time.

When I first heard this I was listening to it non stop for about a month it REALLY touched me deeply both the meaning and his delivery! (The original never did that I had heard it, but I guess because of the style it passed over me at the time plus I was young at the time) now I like both versions but for me this sounds like an original due to the power of the delivery adding weight to the genius & deep lyrics.. kind of reinforcing the importance of them and the song in my opinion anyway.. 👍🏴
Disturbed is one of my favorite bands. David Draiman is a classically trained singer, specifically as a cantor in Jewish practice. They are a Metal band but they do other cover songs as well, however their original songs are amazing. Another song of Disturbed's about this type of message is called "The Vengeful One". It's a harder rock song than this but you all have listened to Metallica, Jinjer and Rammstein already 😄. It's also a pretty cool music video as well. Another great reaction video. OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" which was phenomenal 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today. Actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing, you notice I didn't say viewing, the many channel hosts and each of their reactions and have 😢 almost every time. I was 5 years old when it was written and it remained popular for decades. Paul Simon sang it gently as that was his voice and style. 55+ years later this version stunned me into realizing it is a warning. And I do mean stunned! I’m glad I was alone the first time I heard this version. I’m a crusty old biker who had no clue all these years what the lyrics were really saying, and suddenly my face was leaking heavily.

I saw a comment on another video about this song that I feel was a great description. They basically said the original version was the original warning. This version expresses anger over the warning being ignored all these years. This is one of those rare songs that is every bit if not more relevant today as the day it was written.
Your reaction to David’s version was also mine. Having heard the original by Paul Simon as a young teen I I didn’t get it. When David did his own cover of all these years later, yeah, I got it and my reaction was profound. I wept like a baby and cry every time I hear it.

I never heard the original version. Disturbed's is the first time I heard it. I was riding in the back of my dad's truck headed to town on a back road away from the main highway. As listened to the lyrics I pictured how would people express themselves when they would no longer be able to. An example is how the Scottish kept the way to play the bagpipes alive. Even though it was illegal for them to be played they didn't stay silent. Just as many Native American tribes did for their music dances stories and languages.
This was my husband's favorite song sadly he lost his battle with cancer before he had a chance to hear David's version. The words carry more meaning to me now

For me personally, I feel that the lyrics are a warning of what happens when we allow our voices to be lost to creeping oppression of our own design. The "sound of silence" is people afraid to talk, afraid to seek knowledge and explore their creativity, or lack thereof, and afraid to share their opinions and thoughts in case it shatters the lives they live. Not knowing that, without their voice, they aren't really living at all. Music is, after all, the expression of self through harmonic sound. I think Katy Perry's "chained to the rhythm reflects this as well though the style is entirely different (being that Katy's individuality shines through as Dave's does here). Both amazing artists.
It's wonderful to see music reaching people so far away. Though not unexpected. We are all human, after all, and there is a base part of us that music, done well, can always reach no matter how far apart we might be emotionally, physically or culturally.

I do agree, this song, along with the title, has so many different meanings in it. the title alone can be the silence of people getting addicted to technology to the point of withdrawing from others, or silence of not standing up for others when needed and allowing the suffering of others. the addiction to technology is expressed in the lines "when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night and touched the sound of silence" and " people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening", "and the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made" and not standing up for others when they said "people writing songs that voices never share and no one dare disturb the sound of silence" and " 'fool' said I 'who do not know, silence like a cancer grows." plus, like the guy in the video said about the line in the naked light I saw 10,000 people maybe more, it could be referring to social media now and the we're not really feeling alone. this song was ahead of it's time, disturbed just put the feeling that should be with it

I love the comment at the end about going out and looking at a group of 5 people, each existing in their own world. Lost in their phones, their day dreams, really gives one pause to consider the absolute truth of that statement, and a beautiful interpretation of the meaning of these lyrics.
The raw emotion in David's voice makes this a very powerful and moving song for me. I already loved the original, then this came along and blew it out of the water.

The same for me. Simon & Garfunkel's version is a masterpiece. It's a beautiful song with a great melody and amazing harmonies. His vision of the song is almost otherworldly. I was born 17 years after the release of this song and I grew up listening to it in the early 80s. It's been one of my all time favorite songs throughout my life. In the early 90s I started getting into alternative, grunge and heavy metal. During the late 90s and early 2000s it almost appeared that heavy metal was almost dead. Then came along Disturbed with their hits: Down With the Sickness and Stupify. I was very familiar with Disturbed from the early 2000s. Then around 2015-17 I came across his cover of this song and didn't know what to expect. A classic singer songwriter song of the 60s in which that era of music has become my favorite era of all music is about to be done by a modern heavy metal band. I first came across his live performance on Conan. I was literally impressed, in shock and in awe. A few weeks later I had found out that during his performance on Conan, he refused auto tune and he had sang the song with a head cold and would have never known the difference if I didn't listen to an interview with him. During that interview I had also found out that he personally chose to take Opera Lessons in order to have anger and to be able to sing with a bit of screaming that would not ruing or damage his vocal cords. Talk about dedication. He's an absolute amazing singer. I already knew his early works and liked his heavy metal music but never knew that he could actually sing that good and he actually had a very good singing voice. His control and pronunciation of words is above par, his projection of emotion and soul is beyond this world, and his range and ability to both hold and sustain notes and to transition to notes in different registers is phenomenal. Then I went on to watch the official music video on UA-cam. Paul may have written a masterpiece and gave us all a blessing with a wonderful song, but this man David stole the show. I've heard others cover this song over the years and most fell short compared to the original, and now Draiman owns it! There was one other group that did this song which was quite different where I was impressed and truly enjoy their cover and that was done by Pentatonix or PTX for short. They did an amazing job on this song too. Very few covers of this song have ever impressed me but these two have. Between them, I still say that even as impressive as PTX is with their pure Acapella talent and amazing voices that Disturbed has earned his wings with this song. Even Paul Simon in an interview said virtually the same thing. He said something on the lines, this is how the song should have sounded all along. When he originally wrote the song, Simon & Garfunkel had to play it in a manner according to the popular style of the music in their day otherwise the record companies or labels would have never produced it. This is how it is supposed to be and I don't see anyone anytime soon topping it.
@skillz8098 very well put. I agree, except for the heavy metal part. I have a different perspective. I grew up listening to metal in the late 80s/early 90s (I graduated HS in 1991). I felt like grunge killed rock N roll, including metal. To me, alternative was my replacement. To this day, I dislike most grunge music, especially Nirvana. I held them responsible for killing my music. I know that is stupid now. Still can't find my way to liking Nirvana though. I DO agree there was some come-back in the 2000s. And, I agree that Simon and Garfunkle's version was excellent, too. This is one re-make that equals or even possibly exceeds the original. To be fair, the two versions are so different. They are almost completely different scores of music. I get goosebumps every time I hear Disturbed version. BTW, thanks for all the additional info. Very interesting to know David took Operatic lessons. I come from a classical background; being a pianist since the age of 9, in addition to being a heavy metal chic that enjoyed the oldies in her high school years (50s, 60s & 70s for me), and loving 80s pop. I appreciate and enjoy most types of music, and think it is cool when people cross their genres. P. S. I, too, enjoyed the Pentatonix version, although they have better cover songs in my opinion, such as Hallelujah, and Bohemian Raphsody. I think they excel in Christmas music mostly.

When I say grunge Nirvana was okay, but for me, I liked Pearl Jam, S.T.P., Alice In Chains... For me, I like just about anything that is related to Rock N Roll or Rock. I also like R&B, Soul, Doo-Wop, and more. I don't care too much for modern country, but I do like the older country from the 60s & 70s.
I'm familiar with and have a background in music. I had played the trumpet all through middle and high school. I don't just enjoy basic radio music. I also like things such as Drum and Bugle Corps, Movies like Whiplash, Riverdance was great, and more. For me, music is what moves the soul.

I have been listening to this song since 1963, when I was 7 years old. The way the narrator interpreted the meanings of the lyrics made me think of this song in new ways.
I'd love to see their reaction to him singing live and how he holds his hands.. Having been raised Jewish and taught to be a Cantor, he still holds a lot of the old mannerisms that show it.. it's especially visible on this song when he was live on Conan O'Brien's show, right at the end he touches his forehead with both hands in a bow, and then opens his arms wide. I've also seen concert footage of him singing while holding his hands up, palms up, as if he was reading scripture as both Muslims and Jews do.
The old man, with the beard, has a wisdom about him. He's very observant and his words have weight. Definitely would love to sit and talk with him. He has much to teach anyone who wants to listen.

Thank you for making this video, this is one of my favourite songs and I love how Disturbed sings it! To me, the "Silence" they talk about is the lack of connection between humans. No one dares to break the "silence" of being alone, but one man trying to reach out with music slowly inspires others to pick up their own instruments and also reach out. In this modern age, we've lost some of our ability to form simple human connections. Reaching out and trying to defeat that "silence" of loneliness is difficult, but worth it.

I loved the interpretation given to this song. All I could think is YES, this guy gets it. When he said the light represents the glamour of this world I thought that was a great way to describe worshipping the materialism and commercialism we created. I could tell how much they all appreciated the music and the message. I could see they were moved.

I also interpret the "neon god" as television (now internet/ phones). I love hearing their interpretations as well. The best art is left open to the individual's interpretation and no one person's interpretation is wrong.... it's just how the piece speaks to you.

I’ve had a heavy septum since before it was trendy. My piercing is deeply sentimental as was the stretching. It means a lot to me on a personal level and is part of my journey, part of who I am. Having it co-opted by sjw types and just “trending” on general sucks. Yeah I have this piercing, no that culture is not mine.
