    Chris Fixx - thanks a ton dude. Bought a 1998 F150 with 160k miles and after getting shammed by local shop decided to take a shot at doing my own work. Your videos have enabled me to replaced tie rods, shocks, brake lines, complete brake jobs (front and back), points, plugs, belts, and rear spring brackets over the past three years. The truck now has 198k and I drive it on weekends to drive around town, haul, help neighbors, and family members that need use of a truck. Thank you for taking the lead in providing the knowledge to do these jobs.

    One good way to prevent excessive wear on your front end suspension and steering components is to whenever possible, let the car move forward or backward a little while turning the wheel. Thereby putting less strain on the system.

    • @adudeontheinternet1
      @adudeontheinternet1 Рік тому +5

      It takes less effort to turn the tire if the vehicle is moving. Usually if it were to take 30 lbs of force to turn the wheel when not inmotion it would take 5-8 lbs of force to turn the wheel of you are inmotion ie rolling forward or backwards as you turn. These are not scientific measurements they are just example to give you an idea of the different forces required.

      james walsh Tie rods really aren’t that expensive. At least outer tie rods aren’t, the issue is an alignment. Depending on where you go they can be upwards of 300 bucks. Whenever you change a tie rod you really need to get an alignment so you save a little doing it yourself but the alignment’s what’ll get you in the end.

    Yesterday, I had to quit my job at meineke. A lady came in with some brake issues so I put her car on the lift and did an inspection. In my findings, I remember watching this and noticed the boot was split on the passenger side outer tie rod. So I lightly grabbed the tie rod and was able to easily move it back and forth. I showed her my findings and recommended a new one. She understood and appreciated informing her. Then, the manager comes to me explaining that all tie rods should move. I looked at this guy like he had to be the dumbest tech in the world to have 25+ years experience and not know thats not supposed to move with your hand. He argued me down about what I didn't know, told me suggesting parts to customer that they don't need will cause him a lawsuit, and that I needed to learn car service better. I told him he was an idiot, packed my tools up and drove off. I know I made the right decision, and I appreciate these informative videos to prevent me from ever working with people with false knowledge. Thanks again!

    First this is the hands down best car repair video I've ever came across. Thank You. Now my question is what would be causing a noise on the highway that sounds like the right front tire is bad (it's not) if you pull to the left it goes away. Also if you make a sharp right turn, turning in to parking spot for example, it will pop. 4 new tires alignment is straight. Old tires had slightly more wear on the outer but not much. Anyway thank you again for such a straight forward video.

    • @my2centz196
      @my2centz196 5 років тому

      Usually cv axes will make a clicking noise when making sharp turns which is how I always tell lol. I have gotten brand new ones from autozone that have done that also so if you do purchase and autozone cv axel I'd purchase the gold. I tried 2 of them and ended up returning them and getting the gold which has been holding up for the last 4 years without and issue. The clicking noise is pretty distinctive. I've never let them go longer then a week but I new someone who let one go for months after it started clicking then someone else a few weeks and it snapped lol.

      @@codyramos3200 I've never gotten parts that look like they've been used but I've definitely gotten my share of defects from autozone and advanced auto. As a rule of thumb I never purchase the cheapest option except in a few cases where I was going to dispose of the vehicle shortly after or if it's a friend's vehicle and that's what they want. I guess I should had said anymore because I sure used to until I realized their is a difference lol. I have purchased remanufactured parts in a pinch when it was the only thing available and I needed it on the spot.

      @@codyramos3200 I used to buy a lot of parts from autozone, advance auto, and Napa but not I prefer rockauto unless it's something I need right away. As for the parts stores I like Napa better but their never open when I need them and they are a little pricey lol. You should really look into rockauto. I know some don't like it but it's like any place if you buy China made parts you're gonna get China quality lol. It doesn't matter where you purchase China made parts their typically garbage lol. Anyway I like rockauto because I can get high end parts for about the same price the auto parts stores sell their low end stuff. Sometimes even cheaper. As a matter of fact it just purchased a new pair of headlight bulbs a few weeks ago and I got the bright ones that autozone sells for like $60 and only paid $20 including shipping. I just realized I sound like an advertisement lol. I had a friend who hates rockauto but he buys the cheapest parts available and thinks because of this they are horrible even though he still buys from them all the time lol. Anyway give them a look. Working on a bunch of vehicles can be expensive it might save you a few bucks which is never bad lol. I've heard about people putting grease fittings in ball joints I'm not sold on it but I'd definitely be upset. You could had installed that part thinking it was OK and it snap going down the road could be fatal. My worst experience was with advance auto when an employee trying to be helpful came over and grabbed a can of r-134 I think it is and held the trigger down until my compressor blew. My system was fully charged and had no leaks and I asked what else would cause my ac to not be as cold. I ended up finding the problem it was the coil clogged with bugs lol

    You sound like a very smart mechanic and your presentation and explanation of what you're doing in your videos are really easy to understand. I'm a girl -- and although I won't be attempting to do the repairs myself -- I at least have an understanding of what the mechanic will be doing to my car. Also, do you include the approx. costs for the replacement parts? That would also be very helpful to know as well. Thank you for doing your videos. I hope that you will continue making these repair videos because it REALLY DOES HELP so many people to save money. If I were there in person, I would just give you a big kiss on your cheek !! And give you a little smack on your tush !! And, I bet you have a cute little tush !! You're a cuttie !!!

    • @baroneasterling7080
      @baroneasterling7080 8 років тому +2

      You can actually price AND buy the parts yourself Ms. Lady, then take them to your mechanic for installation. This can save you some BIG BUCS on your part, since mechanics typically purchase parts from HIGH END DEALERSHIPS :)

    • @wanderingbufoon
      @wanderingbufoon 6 років тому

      Most dealerships would rip you off as their prices are retail.
      For example, center console panel of a caddilac (touchscreens) would be 800$ but if you look at their own website, they sell it at 1.4k$. Thats almost twice as much.
      Delearships get it straight from the car manufacturers, typically. This is a safer route for them as it guarantees that any hardware failures are not coming from them. Its prefered if you actually bring them your stuff. If your hardware fails or isnt up to par, youd have to rebuy the parts again and have them install it again. More money for them.
      What really is screwed up with paying mechanics to work on your car is how they plot the work.
      They are paid $80/hr typically.
      Say you wish to replace the brakes, the labour cost will be 80 as it should only take them 1hr (they rely on the computer to tell them their rate)
      Now. If you do rotors, as well, thats another 80$ as its the same process with replacing the brakes.
      If you do BOTH, you have to pay 160$ as the pricing is based on how long the job takes to do should you have it done individually.
      Meaning you are paying them 160$ for a 80$ work. So you are paying them for jacking up the car, removing the tyre, replacing your brakes, replacing the tyre back and jacking the car down (your 1st $80) then jacking it up again to take the tyre out a 2nd time and replacing the rotors and replacing the tyre back in again and jacking the car down a 2nd time.
      This is non-negotiable. Those 2 jobs done combined can be done in 1 hr yet you would pay for 2 hrs work when they dont.
      You should at least get your moneys worth and have them do it like what i said earlier of having to only do the brakes and putting the thing back together and take it apart a 2nd time and installing the rotors and putting it back together.
      I was charged 800$ and more for labor to replace 2 hydraulic power steering hoses as each hose should take them 4 to 5 hrs to install (if its only one job).
      The hoses are literally next to each other. And no, they dont take 3-4 hrs. You jack it up, bleed the system, unclip the hose, replace with new, THEN unclip the other hose and replace with new, replace with fluid. Jack down the car.
      2 hrs MAX. If i have the proper tools to prop the car up myself, i can fix the damn thing.
