Chris Fix is the best car-repair video maker I've ever seen! Watched 50 videos last 2 days, and the fast yet thorough professional editing Chris does just absolutely stands out from the rest. All the pertinent info, all the angles needed are shown, but none of the wasted time BSing and yakking. In this video, the fact he showed sound from bad, then good, then bad, good--WOW, exactly what we all need, who doesn't want the optometrist to do that A, B thing just one more time?? ;) Also, showing the bad bearing without play in hand, up near camera for sound, then ON THE CAR. He just goes the extra mile every time. But presents it all in a tight, fast scripted way. Absolutely subscribed! Thanks!
For those who have tried the tests in the video, and still aren't positive they have a wheel bearing issue, this is what I'd suggest. This assumes you have the following: - Unusual sound (almost like a low throttle exhaust note) which remains even off-throttle. - It becomes noticeable around 40mph, and gets more noticeable the faster you go. - Trying to shake the wheel from the 3 and 9 o'clock positions doesn't reveal any play in the bearing. - There are no alarm codes on the dash - Can't tell if the wheel is rotating normally or not (especially on RWD cars that have independent rear axles). For these cases, it would be hard to test them by yourself. In that case, the best option would be to buy a mechanic's stethoscope ($5 at harbor freight), place it on the wheel bearing hub, and compare the sound between the different wheel bearings. If one has a metal grinding sound much higher than the others, it's probably time for a new bearing. Thanks for the video Chris!

Chris, great tips on ways of checking for the bearing problem, sometimes its actually very difficult to tell (by sound - hearing) which side it's coming from, another tip, if you have a good temperature probe, the bad bearing will typically run at least 10-20 degrees hotter than normal so if you compare bearing case temp from side to side you should notice something.

I've chased down a crazy bearing noise for a year on a 2018 Mazda 3. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times and never noticed in this video you can hear a slight whine in the sound comparisons. My car does that starting around 10mph and builds with speed. It resonates at 65mph exactly throughout the car and makes road trips unbearable... I noticed turning left slightly the other day that the noise basically disappears from the drivers side. Jacked it up and did the tests and you can feel and hear a slight clunk/clack at 12/6 positions and 3 & 9 have a lot of play. Definitely needs to be replaced! Thank you Chris!
Can you tell me which tire/wheel bearing was the culprit? The humming/roaring noise in my car is really bad around 60 mph, but goes away when I turn left. Two different mechanics have been unable to tell me which wheel bearing is bad. The most recent one said its a bad bearing and i should just keep driving until it gets worse, so it'll be easier to locate the bad bearing. The first mechanic just replaced pads and rotors; more than 500 bucks later, I still have the roaring noise. If the sound goes away when I turn left, which side is the bad bearing on?!?! Please help!
Now that I know and I'm 100% my front wheel bearing is going bad makes hella noise ama try to fix it myself and buy the parts! plus I could use some experience, tired of going to the mechanic. For beginners like me this was so helpful Thank You Chris!!!
WOW, don't understand all the downvotes! This video finished putting together all I needed to know after watching a prior video on replacing the bearings. Thanks for the thorough video.
I had that noise so I took my 2010 Tacoma to the Toyota dealer and they said I had a bad transmission mount. They replaced the trans mount under warranty but that did not fix the problem. It was the wheel bearings. Had to fix it myself. Dont trust them dealers!
+rudedogii can you be sure they changed the tranny mount? Pros are hard to find because people don't want to pay for their expertise. DIY'ers only shoot themselves in the foot because when they need a Pro they are scarce. Had they supported the Pro then he'd be there when needed. Think about it.
not related to bearings but more about good mechanics. I took my truck in for inspection and mentioned a code that had been thrown and hard 1-2 shift. He said replace or rebuild tranny without looking. He happened to mention what shop he uses for rebuilds. I figured I'd cut the middleman and go there instead. They actually scanned while driving and confirmed my suspicion. Bad TCC valve. They fixed it and works perfectly and for 1/5th the price of rebuild.
+rudedogii At least they didn't just blame your tires for the noise or the brakes for the scraping. I was under warranty and still had to replace both front bearings. their excuse? no play in the wheels.
Thank you for being so thorough!!! I just watched a video and the guy had his radio playing loudly while trying to show the noise from the bad bearing!
Another way to tell is if your car says "Chevrolet Cobalt" on it anywhere. That's a telltale sign your wheel bearing is going bad. Seriously, went through 3 in 100K miles. Otherwise, under rated car that is really pretty good.
All american made cars are shit. I have owned Toyotas most of my life and have NEVER had a wheel bearing problem. My wife wants a Cadillac, so I buy her one but let her know the transmission won’t last. 40,000 total miles and the wheel bearings have taken a crap. Come to find out, they only warranty them for 12 months. You KNOW they are purposefully installing cheap shit when they only warranty such an important part for 12 months. The replacement bearings ? Warranties for LIFE ! American cars suck horribly.
Just bought a used vehicle week before xmas, drove it home to visit parents. Thought I had a flat or nail in tire. Luckily got 3000 mile warranty. Glad I had the ear for it, and came across the channel. Wheel bearings should be covered under powertrain warranty..
Thank you, I found out my Mitsubishi Mirage had a wheel bearing issue that needed replacement so I sent it to my mechanic to get it replaced and also found out my brake pump was leaking..total cost of repair $150 The mechanic was surprised by how I knew it was the wheel bearing so i shared this video with him
This is exactly what my car sounds like right now. Going to try and buy the parts to do this fix myself, I was told front ones are bad but will probably also do the back ones.
Chris, this was a GREAT video. I normally do the work on my cars myself but this one was new to me. I had a suspicion that it was my wheel bearing but it didn't have play so several of the mechanics and friends I spoke with said it must've been something else. However, your video confirms all of the issues I have had. Thanks again.
As other have mentioned your videos, even being as old as they are, still emacuikate. While the quality has improved a ton. The principles used and basics are still the same and always has me coming back to watch!
This is an awesome, and helpful video! I have a 08 Cadillac Escalade & the dealership was telling me that it was the Differential Ring and Pinion that was making that noise...
hello my brand new wheel bearing hub I just put on sounds like it is humming pretty bad I'm upset I just bought a pair of them from A1 auto parts have not replaced right side front yet
excellent tips! Another great way is to spin the wheel while also holding the suspension spring. A bad wheel bearing will resonate through and you will be able to feel it.
Awesome video. I've experienced and replaced a few bad bearings in my life and you're right on. Sometimes, the howling noise goes up and down in loudness like a wobble.
I fix everything I can (57) and must admit your format and delivery is both informative thorough and pleasant to listen to why I’m not subscribed is be-on me
Cheers for this video. I don't know much about cars but realised something sounded really wrong when I had my radio off tonight. I'm 99% sure it's the bearing just from the sound after watching this, and I'll do the other checks tomorrow. I've subscribed as it's long overdue I learn how to maintain my car - glad you're still updating your channel, the world needs more people making good, clear, informative content 👍
Good information. Thanks. A way to identify which front bearing (maybe even rear?) is making noise, is to make turns to the left and right. If the left front bearing is the problem, the noise will be present when loading that bearing (turning left) and will disappear/lessen when un-loading the left bearing (turning right).
what about rear bearings? does the turning method affect checking those? i got a very slight sound coming from the rear after getting new tires. the shop drove around and said it might be the bearing but list a bunch of possible replacements such as brakes and rotors, break shoes, parking brake kit, backing plates, bearing, etc. they said it might be the bearing verbally however i spoke to another experienced mechanic and he said it might just be the brakes and rotors since bearings on my SUV are supposed to last a long time
Good point but please confirm, I am getting noise while driving straight but when I turn right the noise disappear. This noise started coming after I had to hammer out the jammed all four winter tires to put on all season tires. Will appreciate your comments, thanks.
If the INNER race of the bearing is damaged, you will hear a clunk with each wheel revolution. OUTER race damage will produce a constant roaring sound.
When you spin the wheel on the Pontiac, i actually realized my wheel bearing must be bad if this is how a bad wheel bearing sounds like. Mine is like...101 the same. Think I'll have to take care of this soon. I know its not the tires cause i switched from summer to winter tires some 3 weeks ago. Noise still keeps bugging me but know i feel like i know for sure.
great job chirs, now i know y u get MM views! but when u said ' if u have 3/9 and 12/6 play it can't be tie rod/ball joint" but it still can b, rare but still possible..........thanks
Thank you, I plan to put my car up on a jack to do the test. my car sounds like an airplane engine! Being able to tell which side is so important to me because I need someone else to fix it and can't afford to get ripped off. thank you for empowering me.
I had a hard time finding out what that noise was, thought it was my exhaust, I kept hearing a noise from the right side, I looked an looked, finally jacked up the front of the vehicle gave it gas an listened underneath, heard a noise, so I pushed on the gas pedal again, heard the noise on the right front wheel, finally found out what it was, wheel bearing bad, I heard that noise for the longest time,, wow, finally changed it out, no noise now.
Watching this video and Reading your comment rally gives me a better feeling that I also have bad wheel bearings and not the exhaust. Noise gets loud as I accelerate then I slow down it gets loud but then kind of dies out. Thank you all so much. I'm really going to look closer and see what's going on.
Not a mechanic..If I get noise out of something. like a wheel. I replace it. The wheel has a lot of prssure on it and most likely will be part of the problem. i like the way Chris stresses safety.
Spinning the wheel of the Pontiac while on jacks to hear the wheel bearing was something I didn’t know. Thanks for adding it. (Once I thought I had bad wheel bearings, it turns out my new tires were just very noisy.)
Pro tip: usually if you have a manual gearbox you can grab the springs and turn the wheel around, if you feel like a vibration that will be the broken wheelbearing. You can feel other springs to compare the vibration you feel.
Hi Chris, Wow, 5 million views! congrats! I watched this because I feel my mechanic made a mistake. He said the rim was bent but the wheel bearing was okay and I should be able to drive the car until he gets the rim. Well, he's taken a month and still no rim but my car is making a heck of a noise now. But the noise doesn't happen to much at higher speeds, nor when I move the steering wheel to test it. It's just when I apply the brake pedal. And boy is it loud! I don't know if it's safe to drive it.
That's what mine is doing. A growling noise under 35mph. When I turn to the right it quits though. Could it be a cvjoint cause it's 4wd. Or could it be a bearing in the front differential where cvjoint goes in
This video was super useful! I've been getting a strange noise coming from the passenger rear...and at first i thought my alignment was to blame. But after watching you describe the noise while driving (louder as speed and almost wind sounding); I immediately knew it was my bearing. And sure enough, i jacked it up and have the same looseness that you show when shaking the tire including a terrible squeak noise. Time to replace the hubs! (in pairs cause duh)
Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It sounds like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. It’s not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. It’s not unbalanced tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axle homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement, and nothing helped. Axle itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. Anyway, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didn’t hit pothole or anything like that. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I don’t believe it will fix it. I will be glad for any ideas and suggestions. Thank you
Yea.......I need to warranty out my front bearings. O'Riley covers wear.......well....at least up here they do lol. They take care of customers. Bearings are 3 years old
Huh? Ford uses outsourced bearings, like Timken. Unless something has changed recently. My 1984 F250 4x4 still has perfectly good wheel bearings, and if they WERE bad I wouldn't be blaming Ford.
It depends if your alignment was off before hand and if your wheel bearing was damaged from pot holes. Usually it’s a good idea to get your car aligned if it hasn’t been done in a while.
I had breaks put on my car and ever since then. The front left brake has screeched. They said it was rust. It has been months now. One rainy day the brakes sounded like a jake brake on a semi. Do you have any ideas? I like your channel very much. You are a good teacher.
Hey Chris, i know this video is 9 years old now, but this helped so much in diagnosing the wheel bearings on my 1999 Audi A6 Avant, i was correct in my initial assumption that it was the bearings but after looking up this video it basically confirmed it after i checked, so now will have the parts on order and next up is your video on actually replacing them :)
1. Only wiggle the tire by holding it from up and down positions. Play caused by a wheel bearing wont show itself when you wiggle the tire sideways. Wiggling sideways could result in a false diagnosis. Sideways wiggling is great for diagnosing the tire rod and lower ball joint. 2. If you don't feel any play on the wheel, spin it with one hand while your other hand is on the spring. If the bearing is bad, you should feel a constant vibration in the spring. If the spring is located in a difficult part of the car where you cant get your hand on it, grab the shock absorber (note: doesn't work as well as having your hand on the spring). 3. Take a drive on the highway and listen. If you cant hear anything and didn't find anything while trying the advice 1 and 2, congrats, your wheel bearings are fine.
I have found that driving with the windows down and close to a wall which reflects the sound back is a great way of finding which side the problem bearing is on. You might need to drive on the left side of the road to hear your left wheel bearing, but do it on a quiet street. You can also spin the wheel in gear if one side is still down on the ground. Just put the stand under the car and have the parking brake on and the wheels chocked so it can't go anywhere, even if it drops. The grinding or roaring sound is distinctive and often builds over the years so you may not notice it if you don't ever put the windows down. The silence after the repair is sometimes unsettling since you didn't know the background noise was not supposed to be there.
this is the most thorough and impressive auto repair channel ive seen. serious props

+rudedogii can you be sure they changed the tranny mount? Pros are hard to find because people don't want to pay for their expertise. DIY'ers only shoot themselves in the foot because when they need a Pro they are scarce. Had they supported the Pro then he'd be there when needed. Think about it.
***** Yes I checked it out. I dont trust them.
not related to bearings but more about good mechanics.
+ThePariss333 Why would you ask how? You can't trust any body. Why are you even here, you can't trust Chris ether. Are you asleep? Dreaming?
You put so much effort in your videos men.. Keep up the good work. Really. The contend of your is amazing, I learn new stuff, it's really amazing.
The world needs your channel
lol i see your face now. its been forever! haha appreciate the help my dude
I could not hear the unique sound but the physical test is awesome. Thank you so much
Thank you for being so thorough!!!
Papi Johnson Hahaha, dang that stinks!
I just got a cobalt today and this is the first video I watched.
GM/CHEVY
for sure
All american made cars are shit. I have owned Toyotas most of my life and have NEVER had a wheel bearing problem. My wife wants a Cadillac, so I buy her one but let her know the transmission won’t last. 40,000 total miles and the wheel bearings have taken a crap. Come to find out, they only warranty them for 12 months. You KNOW they are purposefully installing cheap shit when they only warranty such an important part for 12 months. The replacement bearings ? Warranties for LIFE ! American cars suck horribly.
I have a 2007 manual. I00+K miles never had a mechanical issue short of when someone rear-ended it. Been a solid car.
Just bought a used vehicle week before xmas, drove it home to visit parents. Thought I had a flat or nail in tire. Luckily got 3000 mile warranty. Glad I had the ear for it, and came across the channel. Wheel bearings should be covered under powertrain warranty..
Thank you, I found out my Mitsubishi Mirage had a wheel bearing issue that needed replacement so I sent it to my mechanic to get it replaced and also found out my brake pump was leaking..total cost of repair $150
The mechanic was surprised by how I knew it was the wheel bearing so i shared this video with him
This is exactly what my car sounds like right now. Going to try and buy the parts to do this fix myself, I was told front ones are bad but will probably also do the back ones.
How hard was it to dk yourself? Debating on taking to mechanic or doing it myself
Wow, thank you! I never had anybody to teach me this stuff, so glad you give thorough and to the point information. Definitely a subscriber!
As other have mentioned your videos, even being as old as they are, still emacuikate. While the quality has improved a ton. The principles used and basics are still the same and always has me coming back to watch!
hands down the best video on how to tell a bad wheel bearing.. ive seen dozens of videos and here you've explained it the best!
This is an awesome, and helpful video! I have a 08 Cadillac Escalade & the dealership was telling me that it was the Differential Ring and Pinion that was making that noise...
I’m glad the video was helpful!
I'm from Jersey, Chris is definitely a Jersey guy.
Thanks Chris!
No problem
hello my brand new wheel bearing hub I just put on sounds like it is humming pretty bad I'm upset I just bought a pair of them from A1 auto parts have not replaced right side front yet
Gotta say Chris is the best with showing troubleshooting of issues.
excellent tips! Another great way is to spin the wheel while also holding the suspension spring. A bad wheel bearing will resonate through and you will be able to feel it.
Excellent and professional video, congratulation Chris.
Chris, great video as always. With your tips, I was able to diagnose, replace, and make my own video on GMC Envoy wheel bearings.
Awesome video. I've experienced and replaced a few bad bearings in my life and you're right on. Sometimes, the howling noise goes up and down in loudness like a wobble.
Thanks
I fix everything I can (57) and must admit your format and delivery is both informative thorough and pleasant to listen to why I’m not subscribed is be-on me
this was the most thorough explanation on wheel bearing
Very nice video of wheel bearing diagnosis!
Thanks Terry
Excellent information. Thank you for being so thorough.
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re learning a lot and enjoying the videos!
Woah I can see part of your face.... I need to sit down and have a glass of wooder...
Thanks Chris your video saved me thousands,I'm a middle aged ex-motor head that needed a little clarification and my truck is as good as new.
WMichael S Actually, it's the opposite. So, if you turn right you will increase load on left front.
Ooops! Sorry, brain fart. Thanks for catching that!
what about rear bearings? does the turning method affect checking those? i got a very slight sound coming from the rear after getting new tires. the shop drove around and said it might be the bearing but list a bunch of possible replacements such as brakes and rotors, break shoes, parking brake kit, backing plates, bearing, etc. they said it might be the bearing verbally
however i spoke to another experienced mechanic and he said it might just be the brakes and rotors since bearings on my SUV are supposed to last a long time
IndividuallyWrapped y
Good point but please confirm, I am getting noise while driving straight but when I turn right the noise disappear. This noise started coming after I had to hammer out the jammed all four winter tires to put on all season tires. Will appreciate your comments, thanks.
If the INNER race of the bearing is damaged, you will hear a clunk with each wheel revolution. OUTER race damage will produce a constant roaring sound.
Thanks for the tip!
@@chrisfix I see your face in the rear view mirror
When you spin the wheel on the Pontiac, i actually realized my wheel bearing must be bad if this is how a bad wheel bearing sounds like. Mine is like...101 the same. Think I'll have to take care of this soon. I know its not the tires cause i switched from summer to winter tires some 3 weeks ago. Noise still keeps bugging me but know i feel like i know for sure.
great job chirs, now i know y u get MM views! but when u said ' if u have 3/9 and 12/6 play it can't be tie rod/ball joint" but it still can b, rare but still possible..........thanks
Thanks . 85$ for a new wheel bearing and 30 minutes of work did it for me.
Good thing you didn't have a rear wheel drive car...
Hey Chris, love your videos! Thank you! 53 still learning everyday. Peace..
Spinning the wheel of the Pontiac while on jacks to hear the wheel bearing was something I didn’t know. Thanks for adding it. (Once I thought I had bad wheel bearings, it turns out my new tires were just very noisy.)
One the best car UA-cam mechanics out… us diyers appreciate you
Love your channel Chris!
Thanks for all the tips.
Pro tip: usually if you have a manual gearbox you can grab the springs and turn the wheel around, if you feel like a vibration that will be the broken wheelbearing. You can feel other springs to compare the vibration you feel.
I'm guessing you mean struts? Front shocks or leafsprings in the rear if it's a truck.? Seems like a good tip either way
That’s exactly what mines sounded like thanks for the tip bro
Glad I could help!
A bad wheel bearing will heat up rapidly, Thanks Chris you have filled in the blanks for me!
Uhm I was looking for the sound of a broken bearing in a part of my 3d printer, but now I found out my car is broken. Thank you, I guess!
😂😂😂🤣🤣
Thank you for your detailed explanation. Very good! Cheers
Thanks a lot Bruno!
Hey @ChrisFix is a bad wheel bearing also when you’re rolling at low speeds and it’s a grinding spinning noise
That's what mine is doing. A growling noise under 35mph. When I turn to the right it quits though. Could it be a cvjoint cause it's 4wd. Or could it be a bearing in the front differential where cvjoint goes in
@@dentondunn4346 mine is the exact same. Did you fix yours and if so what did it take
This video was super useful!
Awesome job diagnosing it! Glad the video helped
Fricking bad bearing diagnosis clinic! Thanks Chris! Great job as usual.
Can it be mistaking as a Bent CV axle?? Or possibly cause premature wear on it?
Wow great information here, for sure it's my wheel bearing
Glad the video was helpful!
Thank u sooooo much chris i finally figured out what that noise is 👍
No problem! Glad the video was helpful!
ChrisFix wasnt expecting a answer haha my first ever response from a big youtuber😆 love ur video's btw
Great Job , you won't believe such a video delivers how much knowledge to other people.
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you learned a lot from the video!
Thank you
Ford is notorious for bad wheel bearings.. like on my explorer
So true, all the ford's Fiesta's, escorts and Focus I've had to replace the wheel bearings
Hahahaha! I love Fords. Even if they're complete turds, I still love 'em. They know what they want, don't they?
Yea.......I need to warranty out my front bearings. O'Riley covers wear.......well....at least up here they do lol. They take care of customers. Bearings are 3 years old
Huh? Ford uses outsourced bearings, like Timken. Unless something has changed recently. My 1984 F250 4x4 still has perfectly good wheel bearings, and if they WERE bad I wouldn't be blaming Ford.
Built Ford tough!
Finally I thought my engine was going to blow up but it was this loool
Lol spooky car noises
@ Chris Fix, thanks for the awesome how to videos!! Do i need to do an alignment after replacing the hub and bearing??? thanks for your time!
Hey Chris, i know this video is 9 years old now, but this helped so much in diagnosing the wheel bearings on my 1999 Audi A6 Avant, i was correct in my initial assumption that it was the bearings but after looking up this video it basically confirmed it after i checked, so now will have the parts on order and next up is your video on actually replacing them :)
for Land Rovers, a failed bearing sounds like a clicking noise and will often make a vibration. Will think its the CV axle but its the bearing
Thanks for the information!
When my bering was going bad, it sounded like a swarm of bees was following me.
Thanks for sharing!
0:53 Mine is making a pounding noise - must be something else wrong with it.
I thought of that but the echo was so bad I still could not tell maybe I should give it a try on a different street
Hey ChrisFix, I have an 01 chevy impala and whenever I'm driving it, it'll make a roaring noise. What is making that noise when I drive?
Bad girdle spring
The trunk monkey is hungry
You can see part of Chris’s face in the rear view mirror
You can see his face in all of his old videos ahah
I couldn't hear the video over my wheel bearing😂
Awesome video, this has got to be the best description on how to diagnose bearings, ever.
Your video really helped me out and saved me time and money by going to a mechanic for a diagnosis thanks
Chris. I am new to your Chanel. Have not come across a how to video on how to replace a head gasket. Do you have video on that?
