As a reminder - it is inevitable that sometimes I'll give a vehicle a not-super-positive review, but you may have had a really good experience with it. Thats fine. Everyone's experience with this stuff is different. Plus, please remember that my commentary is based on the experience I think an **average player** will have, and not always me personally. There are good planes I am personally bad with, and bad planes I am personally good with - but I try to be balanced in how I review them. Like all vehicles, the Kikka absolutely CAN achieve greatness - but as I said at the end, there absolutely IS a steep learning curve with it, and I stand by my position that a new-to-jets player is going to have a pretty bad first impression with this one. YMMV, and that's totally ok - its all subjective anyway. :-)
Hi, me here from the future, figured I'd give some light at least being from said future.
The Kikka is still at 7.0 (which is definitely high for what the plane can really do without a good pilot) and the guns are still limited in ammo and count. The Japanese 30mm's, both naval and army, also appear to have been nerfed from 920m/s shell velocity down to only 750m/s since about September of 2023 from my best guess.
The plane does not do well in horizontal turns- however, due to it's relatively light air frame and in spite of it's low thrust engines, it can do a decent job of maneuvering in high yo-yo's, and whilst as mentioned it doesn't turn great- it does retain it's speed pretty well, especially for an early prop.
I personally disagree about it's acceleration being slow- but it depends. On take off it does take a bit (which is why I appreciate the RATO kit they gave it), but once you're airborne and over 300-400km/h, it accelerates pretty decently and can hold around 400-450km/h in a 10 degree climb or so, and rocket upwards in doing so somewhat effectively.
They did at least give the Japanese 30mm cannons a proper ground belt with actual AP/APHE rounds with 45mm of pen for both the naval and army cannons, and while the ammo count is limited- it can make CAS more effective in the jet at the very least.
Overall, I agree with many of your points, especially with the steep learning curve and that it is not competitive enough for what it faces at it's own BR, however, I will disagree on some other points like the acceleration being poor. The engines also don't overheat nearly as bad when I fly the thing out nowadays either, leaving me to hold the engines at 106% for minutes on end, and only letting them cool down for a few seconds before being able to crank them up for some time once more.

Just as a heads up, don't cover the N1K2's if you can help it- it is not worth your time with how over-tiered those poor things are, same with the J7W in it's current, abysmal state. J2M's might be a fun visit however, bit of a learning curve but actually solid aircraft for their tier.

You can actually bring out the Kikka in 6.3 naval battles. Yes. It is fun.
i was going to say this! it’s really fun for dive bombing and you can pick off some of the catapult planes after you bomb!

Once you get it wound up, boom and zooming is almost unstoppable in this plane. Long shallow dives, and on the exit, a shallow spiral climb and re-engage is the name of the game.

Just a bit of context as to why the incorrect name "Kitsuka" probably came to be:
"Kikka" is written as きっか in Japanese, notice the small っ in there. This っ serves as a doubled consonant, that's why the plane is "kiKKa" and not "kiKa". The catch is, っ looks just like a small つ. And this bigger つ is pronounced as "tsu". So they mistakenly went with きつか "kitsuka", and not the correct きっか "kikka".

tim what, the Type 5* 30mms are like my favourite cannons ever. The cyclic rate is slow sure, but the muzzle velocity is so immense that aiming is actually not that hard and more often than not you will get one-taps with them. I much prefer them to the water pistol cannons found on Russian aircraft.
if uses the type 5, the type 99 is the 20mm.

They haven't just bumped this up but the mk 24 Spitfire, fair enough, it's better than the Kikka, but at 7.0, gets dragged into 8.0 games, and if you're taking it into ground RB, that means you'll be facing radar AA like the Gepard (introduced in 1976) in a 1945 prop aircraft (and the final revision of a 1938 design).

There are some Kikka tricks to this plane.
You can just let the gears rip and keep the RATO pods. Then belly land like a chad.
Taking minimum fuel gives a huge acceleration boost.
Tracer belts are king, as Tims says, 920 m/s ensures good snipes, so train your trigger discipline.
Perfect vertical loops is the way.
And the best one, you can tell Me-262 fanatics to stop copying your superior jet design.

I actually had a good enough impression when getting it
It was sure an harder to use plane and lese versatile than the N1K2-J (i Hope you will do a review on it one day ^^) but i did found the plane quite good
Compare to other jets it had better climb which give it a edge + the take off rocket booster help a lot to get off the ground faster
The guns are hard to use and have low ammo for sure tho it still way easier to aim than some other 30mm to me and it's precise enough
I used it mostly in ground RB and it's good but you feel limited compare to other plane or some prop plane like the N1K2-J but the bomb is still very good
For air RB considering the fights generally end up at low to mid alt you can easely get above most ennemy and thanks to it's very high max speed it Can outrun most ennemy at its br After a dive
I did struggle at the start to learn how to play jets but now i really like it and find it good
Yeah awhile back whwn i was still learning 262 and this. I prefered kikka
compared to other first gen jet like the me 262 and the first meteor, the kikka has a better acceleration, climb speed and energy retention so it is really a good plane in some aspect
Great video, glad to see coverage of the design, as many people write it off as just a 262 copy (even though it was originally a dedicated bomber), incidentally, the variant in-game is a planned fighter known as the Kikka-kai, as it uses the Ne-20 Kai engines and of course has guns, two things the original constructed Kikka lacked.

The kikka was a copy but it was a self made copy. The Japanese were trying to make a copy but the submarine with the engines and schematics was sunk along the way. So they had to basically create what they thought the me 262 looked like and then tested it.
So, the ki200 was a deja vu?
i saw something that the japanese engineers rebuilt an entire engine only using photos of an engine. possibly it was a bf-109 engine they were trying to put into a japanese plane

Gotta say I have had a different experience in the Kikka, Tim. Stock grind is bad, but I find the 30mm guns to be amazing in terms of velocity and damage. Also, the Kikka has better energy retention and better performance than the 7.0 Me262 at lower alts so I find its performance fine for 7.0 br. It does make a nice CAS plane in ground rb, even though the 30mm belts are terrible for ground targets. I noticed a lot of your footage was in arcade, and one thing the kikka cant do is turn so maybe that's why it was hard to get hits with the 30mm?
Grinding through the Japanese air tree I remember be pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had in the kikka
When it was 6.7,this was a menace since you can basically out energy any prop you face in a dive.
(R2Y2s a bit more serviceable since you get more dakka,but its still *heckin slow*)
I actually found the Kikka to be AMAZING and is a highlight of the Japanese TT for me. The sheer flight performance you get at 7.0 is amazing. I averaged probably 2-3 kills a match in this thing. I was just really good at aiming the cannons from the start, I thing playing the J7W to unlock the Kikka is what really helped me aim the type 5. Plenty of 500-900m kills in the Kikka.
Ye same here. Also used the J7W to grind the Kikka so aiming the 30mm in a boom and zoom from 500-900 metres out is like a basic routine. A bit annoying in the very early grind since you only get one tracer every 4 shots and the muzzle velocity of the other bullets isn't all that great but that only means you need to shoot from a bit closer until you have those tracer belts.

Nah fam, Kikka is a god. I remember at 6.7 it literally dunked on everything and even at 7.0, you have great acceleration and guns. You just have to fly it like an energy fighter rather than a turnfighter.
Tim i recently just got the P-47N-15 and the next aircraft in the line is P-51H
after that i will soon get my first jet (F-84B)

i don't get why people see the second gun a a mandatory thing, if you can aim well with it it often only takes one good hit to kill. Things are still slow enough that you can actually aim for the wings or tail instead of center mass.
Honestly Tim, I agree with your assessment, I (being a slightly newer player) havent experienced the 6.7 wonderness so my only experience has been 7.0 stockgrind which is definitely just sad. I will say however, it can soak up more than you think (the japanese paper armor is a bit better for this jet) but it 100% goes against the turn fighter theme of Japanese fighters. While I'm sure I just need to learn how to boom and zoom, I dont like using this plane :(

The landing is easy? It took me around 10 attempts to not implode myself attempting to land it, it's brakes are as soft as butter and the plane refuse to lose speed, at all. Still apretty fun to hear review, even from a year ago!
This pretty much the best 7.0 early jet in the game if you follow the thrust to weight ratio chart

What happend was that Old Germany sent design fo the me 262 for Japan to copy, japan did not like the me 262 so they the re-engineered by japan and made better but obviously this took time , japan ended up rarely using this kikka so basically it a better me 262. Just wanted to mention
Kikka is great in arcade in a 6.3 lineup where low ammo isnt a problem anymore.
The arcade mode in-air reload really is a HUGE buff to a lot of the entry-level jets, no question.
Compared to the other "first jets" it has better climb and acceleration but you definitely have to be careful with props
The Kikka was the ONLY jet I was forced to outright buy the 2nd gun with GE as it's single gun was so pathetic to use that grinding was taking forever. It fires so darn slow and has next to no ammunition. It was not fun in the slightest and i'm glad I rushed to get the Ki-200 instead many years ago.
Kikka was oje of the easiest and most fun for me. The 30 mm slaps as well :)

The He-162 is probably my favorite "just messing around" jet right now, with the Mig-23s probably my favorite one to fly "serious", but thats really just because they're currently on-meta.
I sometimes take the boosters with me noone forces you to use them only on take off
Any time when I'm playing early jets and Japan is on the other team that thing kills me
6:25 u can actually use them later because after take off when the gear retracts automatically it just lags through the boosters
It's only visual bug. Your landing gear just gonna popped off later on

I managed 1 kill and 3 assists in it. That was my best game since nabbing it yesterday.

This is my first jet plane... It's painfull. I'm not a good pilot, but i could see a LOT of downside in this plane

In other words, had Germany not shared their knowledge, this aircraft would have been wildly different, and likely far worse than it was historically. Sure, not a copy. But it's like copying someone else's homework and changing it a bit.
Not exactly its more like you hear of a project. And you pretty much create your own project. yourself in your own way using little to no information. Even whwn you consider an engine being sent. They still had to make their own from acratch and designed it on their own. I forgot the details of the engine part but the other part is true

Kikka belongs at 6.7
No, even at 7.0 it's excellent. Basically only the Su-11, and somewhat the F-80A, counters you on all fronts.

Sure you can make it work but with a repair cost so ridiculous strapped onto it I would much rather just play a 262
@@V-V1875-h It's better than all other 7.0 planes except the Su-11 and maybe the F-80A. The Su-11 should be atleast 7.7 though. The repair cost is harsch though, as you said.

This jet is so underpowered. There is no after burner or r60mk or radar or gau cannon and more importantly, flares this is the worst jet I have ever played
What 7.0-7.7 has flares?
